My Neighborhood
—MANHASSET—
Manhasset Valley Park
Picture Perfect
WHEN I first came to Manhasset, I thought it looked like a picture-book town,” says Dr. John Procaccino, who arrived in the Long Island hamlet for an internship at North Shore University Hospital in the 1980s. Three decades later, he still finds Manhasset picture perfect.
Procaccino met his future wife, Elizabeth, during his internship and, after a brief stint away, the couple returned to the idyllic North Shore destination in 1992 to settle and raise their three children.
“The community is very conducive to raising a family,” Procaccino says of Manhasset, which he praises for its welcoming vibe and active, civic-minded population. “People tend to be nice, outgoing, and helpful,” he notes. What’s more, “You have proximity to great beaches, water, golf, pleasant neighboring towns, and New York City (a half-hour ride away by train).”
—Bernadette Starzee
TALK OF THE TOWN
Procaccino describes Manhasset’s downtown as “a slice of Americana.” Surrounding the Long Island Rail Road station and Plandome Road, the town center boasts a lively blend of stores and restaurants, including an ice cream shop, bakeries, and the Manhasset Cinemas (430 Plandome Rd., 516.304.5930), a historic theater that is nearly 100 years old and notable for its Art Deco architecture.
The local community takes pride in its town center, gathering downtown for events like the annual Memorial Day Parade. “I find it heartwarming to see everyone, young and old, show up on the main street for the parade,” he says.
NATURE NURTURE
Another aspect of Manhasset that makes it appealing to families is the wide variety of programs children and teens can participate in, from athletics to the arts. Manhasset Valley Park has fields for lacrosse, softball, and Little League, as well as treelined paths where residents can enjoy nature. There’s tennis and swimming at the historic
Strathmore Vanderbilt
Country Club.
The nearby not-for-profit
Science Museum of Long
Island at the Leeds Pond Preserve offers hands-on science programs and field trips for kids of all ages on subjects ranging from beach and woodland ecology to maple sugaring. (1526 N. Plandome Rd., 516.627.9400)
LET’S EAT
For dinners out, Procaccino recommends Schout Bay Tavern (118 Plandome Rd., 516.627.2190), a gastropub with the old Dutch name for Manhasset Bay that serves salads, soups, and seafood. He also likes Cipollini (2110C Northern Blvd., 516.627.7172), which serves “Northern Italian dishes in an upbeat atmosphere.” Another favorite is Toku (2014 Northern Blvd., 516.627.7121), known for its modern Asian-fusion fare.
Both Cipollini and Toku are located in the Americana Manhasset,
Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club
an open-air shopping center that is part of an upscale retail corridor along Northern Boulevard.
EASY ACCESS
With direct service via the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington line, Manhasset residents can reach Manhattan’s Penn Station in just 27 minutes. “In my New York–centric point of view, I believe
the center of the world is Manhattan,” Procaccino says. “To raise your children in a suburban setting and still be able to expose them to all the amazing aspects of New York City is a huge advantage.”
