A slice of St Lucia history

John Carmody and Robert Cribb were the first to establish farms in what is now the suburb of St Lucia. In the early 1850s John Carmody ‘squatted’ on land in the river pocket, and Robert Cribb set up Lang Farm on the south bank of Toowong Creek. By 1859 all of the land in St Lucia had been sold, and most established with sugar plantations. In 1882, William Alexander Wilson purchased one of these plantations which reminded him so much of his West Indies birthplace, that he renamed the plantation St Lucia Sugar Plantation. The land was subdivided in 1883 and the name transferred to the subdivision.
