Founded in April 1910, The University of Queensland was the first university in the state. Originally teaching was held in the Old Government House. It featured three faculties (Arts, Science & Engineering), and had 83 students enrolled. After the end of World War 1 the university rapidly expanded and outgrew its inner-city location, so an additional site in Victor Park (now occupied by the Medical School) was secured. Four years later, Dr James O’Neill and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne provided funds to buy the current St Lucia site. The first building of the St Lucia University Campus was completed in 1939.
