FOR THE A DVA N C E M E N T OF ARTS & CULTURE

I’m in awe of how many places we’ve traveled together through this almanac, and I’m pleased to share the Twentieth Chronicle!

Finding “third places” where anyone can be is the underlying rhythm to selecting features. And every location is also my response to, “Where can I go without spending $100?” Defined as “separate from the home or the workplace,” third places are also about being in this moment. Not worrying about other responsibilities or letting time slip away to attention-sucking activities. Being here, right now, and expressing gratitude for the gift of today. So thank you! For immersing yourself in an afternoon of visual art, or even going a step further and using these recommendations in real life. FASHION DISTRICT Sante Fe Ave is familiar by now, and your next visit begins by turning onto 16th St and venturing inside Night Gallery and François Ghebaly. The properties share outdoor space, alleyways, and a parking lot where many art lovers are congregating for Saturday night opening receptions.

All four shows at Night Gallery are on view until December 22, and my favorite works are featured here: Sculptures by Julia Haft-Candell in her solo show The Yearning. Paintings by Carrie Moyer, Nigel Cooke and Sarah Blaustein in their group show The Big Picture.

Oil pastel works by Amy Adler in her solo show Audition. New paintings by Keita Morimoto in his solo show we didn’t know it. Then at François Ghebaly, I really enjoyed a handful of new works by Sascha Braunig in Poseuses, a solo show on view until December 23. As always, direct links to images, information, and press releases about these artists are in the appendix. SOUTH PARK As I spent more time in Downtown Los Angeles, I made it my mission to know the locations of every green space & park available to the public. The next time you’re looking for a break from the buildings or an escape from the congested corner of LA LIVE, meander towards FIDM and find Grand Hope Park.

CHINATOWN & HIGHLAND PARK

Venturing east is a commitment, yet you can always count on Wönzimer to learn of emerging artists in their residency program and to see an avant-garde exhibition on display. I visited on Saturday afternoon to see Ann Weber’s woven, cardboard creations in her solo show O What Fools We Mortals Be, on view until December 22. Then five miles north into Highland Park is La Loma Projects. I visited last winter for Pace Taylor’s solo show Dancing Feels a lot Like Falling and some of my favorite pieces are featured in the following pages. LITTLE TOKYO And since you’re already downtown, I highly recommend Gloria Molina Grand Park. These four blocks begin at the front steps of City Hall and conclude at the public art piece “Peace on Earth” (inside cover photo). The environment is suprisingly calm, and I make the most of this resource by parking on Broadway & 2nd St, enjoying the Law Libary, and then walking into the Historic Core for entertainment or something to eat.
