ROCK SHOE BUYING GUIDE
Rock climbing is all about footwork, so choosing a pair of climbing shoes may be the most important move you make. The design, shape and materials vary according to the kind of climbing they’ve been made for. Our guide will help you find the ideal shoe and the best fit for you.
COMFORT
ALL ROUND
PERFORMANCE
Ideal for: Beginner climbers; all-day comfort on multi-pitch climbs. Design: Flat and straight-lasted for comfort. They often use a very durable rubber. The midsole is usually medium-stiff to give a supportive platform. Fit: When starting out it’s important not to be seduced into getting a tight ‘technical’ fit. Fit shoes so that your toes touch the end, slightly curled but not crammed in.
Ideal for: Improving climbers moving up the grades; multi-discipline all-rounders. Design: More asymmetric and sometimes slightly downturned. Angled heels load power onto the toe. Thinner, stickier rubber and more flexible midsoles give better sensitivity. Fit: Improving climbers will appreciate the extra precision and edging power you get from snug fitting shoes and a slightly crimped toe position.
Ideal for: Experienced climbers at the top grades; high-performance specialists. Design: These shoes are asymmetric and downturned, putting the foot in a ‘talon-like’ shape which allows force to be exerted on micro-edges, overhangs and roofs. Fit: Go for a precise fit that puts maximum power on minimal holds. Heel fit is also important, especially on boulder problems that call for heel-hooking.
TOP TIPS FOR FITTING ROCK SHOES • Shoes made from unlined leather will stretch with use (up to a full size). Nonstretch synthetic materials or lined leathers should stay true to the original size. • Rubber is the interface between you and the rock, and often your main defence against gravity! Harder compounds offer better durability and edging performance; softer rubbers give better friction but less solidity on edges. • Lacing gives precise adjustment down the length of the foot. Hook-and-loop (e.g. Velcro) tabs are quicker and easier to adjust. This is especially good for tight-fit bouldering shoes, allowing easy removal between problems. • Whether lace or Velcro, make sure there is scope for tighter adjustment, in case the uppers stretch over time. • Keep an open mind on size. You may need to go up or down from your usual street shoe size, depending on the brand and fit required.
• Feet swell slightly through the day, so try rock shoes in the afternoon or after a walk. Remember you’ll be wearing them without socks. • Ensure shoes are laced or fastened securely to eliminate dead space. Focus on the forefoot, but aim for a snug heel as well. • Check that the shoe’s heel cup contours comfortably around the ankle bone and doesn’t dig in to the Achilles. • Test shoes in-store. Stand on holds or edges using different parts of the foot, including the big toe, inside forefoot and outside forefoot. Check they feel stable, with no rotation around the foot. • Rock shoes perform best when fitted snugly, but remember the old Five Ten motto: Pain is Insane! Don’t fit them too tightly; modern rock shoes will give you the performance without the pain.

MAKING A CARABINER This is the story of how a DMM carabiner goes from being a length of aluminium bar to the finished design that we know and love.
1. DMM design, prototype, test and manufacture all their hardware inhouse at their base in Llanberis. They’re proud to be doing this 100% in the UK, just as they have done since starting in 1981.
2. Into the workshop and the first job is to chop the bar to length.
3. Once heated, each length is put into a bowing machine to be bent into the rough shape of the carabiner it will become. page 24
024-025_Article_DMM_Factory.qxp_Layout 1 29/03/2019 11:02 Page 25
4. Next comes one of DMM’s specialities - hot forging. This process gives the carabiner its features and shaping, moving metal to where it’s needed and removing it from where it’s not required. This is the key to getting the best combination of functionality and strength without a weight penalty. To achieve this, the batch of bars is heated in a furnace, before each individual carabiner is placed on the heated forging dies. As the press crashes down onto the hot metal bar, it forces the metal into the mould and creates everything from the structure to the fine detail, such as the logo and strength ratings. 5. Each carabiner comes out of the hot forge with a ‘flash’. This is the excess metal that was squeezed out of the mould. The flash is clipped off to leave something that looks recognisable as the final carabiner - but very rough around the edges. 6. Next the whole batch undergoes a heat treatment. This homogenises the metal structure and ensures precipitates are fully dissolved to massively boost strength. In fact, this process can almost double the strength of the carabiner so it’s crucial to the final performance. 7. After the heat treatment, all the sharp edges (left over from the clipping) need to be removed. To do this, the carabiners are put into a rumbling machine, together with conical ceramic chips. The machine shakes the carabiners against the ceramic chips, which gradually remove any sharp edges or burrs. From the rumbling machine, the carabiner goes to be anodised. This increases corrosion resistance, reduces friction and adds colour. 8. Finally, carabiners go into assembly. The gate is added, riveted, checked and tweaked for a perfect action. Every piece goes through intense quality control to ensure there are no structural issues or cosmetic blemishes. This step is actually also done pre-assembly and on final assembly.
9. DMM also test a sample quantity from every batch of 650 - 850 carabiners, stretching the samples to destruction in all the required orientations.

TOP TIPS for TRAD CLIMBING by Natalie Berry

Natalie discovered climbing at the age of nine, and it quickly took over her life. She joined the GB Youth Climbing Team aged just 11, competing worldwide at an international level. By 18, she had swapped the indoor plastic for outdoor sport, followed with her first forays into ice and trad; the UK has a rich heritage of trad climbing, and she wanted to be a part of that. Now aged 27, Natalie continues

to push her all-round climbing skill set with sport, bouldering, trad and alpine ambitions! A coach and mentor too, here Natalie shares some of the things she’s learned about trad climbing: The easier routes are often the scariest.
that it was even more useful for the mental side of trad climbing. I have often made the mistake of thinking of a climb as one big, daunting route. Instead of choosing designated rest spots to scope out the next section, I would try and tackle a route as one big challenge, getting blinkered by each move in isolation. Changing your approach and breaking down the climb into manageable parts helps to keep you composed.
The most scared I remember being on a trad climb was on an easier route, when I was learning to place gear. My placements were decent, but due to the nature of the climb following up a slabby corner with rock surrounding me on all sides, it was rather daunting. The idea of falling and tumbling down a corner on this easier Fear of failure is often more of a hindrance than fear of falling. climb was far less appealing than falling off a tricky move on a vertical E4 headwall, 80m above the sea! Some exposure can be more comforting than being hemmed I have frequently spent considerably more time thinking of the consequences in by rock, which must put a lot of people off trying slightly steeper, harder trad. of falling off and failing than the actual physical consequences of falling itself. Being bold mentioned above is a technique I use to mark checkpoints along the way, is the result of a calculated assessment of your situation and your response to it; it's which helps you realise that it’s just a piece of rock with a subjective letter and not necessarily a trait that is set in stone and always functions efficiently. CLIMBING ROPES BUYING GUIDE
A dynamic climbing rope will link together your entire safety chain, and could be the thread that saves your life when you fall. With so much riding on this piece of equipment, it’s important to choose the most appropriate one for the kind of climbing you’re doing. The three main considerations are the type of rope; the length; and whether or not it should be dry treated.
TYPES OF ROPE Single Ropes Single ropes are suitable to be used on their own. They are simple to use for both lead climber and belayer. Single ropes are ideal when the route follows a fairly straight line, so choose one for sport climbing, indoor walls (leading or top-roping) and short straight-up trad climbs.
Twin Ropes Here the climber uses two very thin (<8mm) ropes which must both be clipped together to the same protection. The benefit is that they’re lighter than half ropes, and can be used to do full rope-length abseils compared to single ropes. Pure twin ropes are rarely used in the UK.
Half (Double) Ropes Half ropes can be clipped independently to keep each line running straight on wandering, traditionally-protected routes. This reduces the ‘zig-zag’ effect (and rope drag) you’d get with a single rope. Half ropes can also be knotted together for full-length abseils.
Confidence Ropes The walker’s confidence rope is suitable for short-roping nervous members of a party over steep or rocky ground. Made from a lightweight static rope, it is not suitable for rock climbing.
CHOOSING A CLIMBING ROPE LENGTH The length you choose depends on the kind of climbing you’re doing.
Indoor Climbing Many indoor climbing centres have lead walls between 10m and 15m high. Therefore, a 30m or 35m single rope should be ideal for most indoor climbing centres. Longer ropes increase the chance of tangles and will take longer to re-coil at the end of the session!
Sport Climbing Many outdoor routes are significantly longer than those found indoors and it’s worthwhile having more than enough rope for any given route. 50m is a minimum; 60m covers most situations; 70m is good for longer pitches; and 80m will allow you to tackle longer extensions.
Trad Climbing 50m ropes save weight and reduce rope faff on shorter rock pitches. However, 60m lengths may allow you to reach and attach to better belay stances. They also allow longer abseils which can be crucial on winter and alpine climbs. As ever, longer ropes give you a greater safety margin.
DRY TREATMENT Untreated ropes can shrink by 10% when wet. As the nylon shortens, the rope becomes less dynamic (stretchy), which increases the impact force. This increases the chance of ripping protection and/or a bigger shock to the body in the event of a fall. Soaked and frozen ropes can also be unmanageable. So for any adventurous trad, alpine or winter climbing, a dry treatment is essential. Brand

For many, climbing is more than just a sport or a hobby; it has a habit of taking over our entire lives! It can be thrilling to stumble upon climbing at one of the many superb indoor facilities and most people quickly find themselves addicted and hungry to improve. There is a wealth of training information out there online, yet it is surprisingly difficult to distil this into a simple doctrine. So for those who are keen to cut to the chase and crush, here is a collection of some of my tastiest tips.
1 EMPHASISE QUALITY AND VARIETY
5 MAXIMISE SKILLS AND KEEP YOUR HEAD IN GEAR!
Don’t over-do it. Climbing differs notably to aerobic sports and weight training where the mantra ‘no pain, no gain’ prevails. Climbing places strain on small fragile tendons and the common mistakes are doing too much or going too-fasttoo-soon. Three or four high quality two-hour sessions a week with good recovery in between will always produce better results than going to the wall 5 or 6 times and thrashing away. If you’re new to the sport then stay away from fingerboards and campus boards and focus on gaining technique by climbing on different holds and on angled-walls. Be wary of spending too long sieging projects especially on overhangs (which place more load on the arms) and instead, aim to climb a volume of problems (say 20-30 each session). There’s no need to give training a second thought unless you’ve been climbing at least a year. In contrast, if you get too strong, too quickly you will find it much harder to learn techniques afterwards. If you’ve been climbing for a while then try splitting your climbing into ‘phases’ of say a month in length, where the aim is to work more on either strength or endurance, but keep all plates spinning and avoid focusing exclusively on one thing, or your gains will be offset by losses in other areas.
These days the disconnect between indoor and outdoor climbing seems greater than ever and the biggest challenge is adapting your skills to the rock. Use your warm-up climbs to focus on ‘technique drills’; e.g: precise feet, straight arms, relaxed grip, fluid movement and deep breathing. Try to visit new walls and expose yourself to as much variety as possible rather than ‘lapping’ the same old stuff. If possible, try to train endurance on a leading wall to keep the associated skills (clipping, resting etc.) topped up and help you to keep your head in gear for falling. Above all else, remember to enjoy the process as you are most likely to improve when you’re having fun! Neil Gresham is one of Britain’s best known all-rounders. He has climbed E10 and F8c+/9a and WI7 and has been at the forefront of coaching for 25 years. Neil is a technical representative for La Sportiva, Petzl and Osprey.
2 GET STRONG Being strong for climbing does not mean being good at weights. The best method is bouldering, with some supportive fingerboard work for those who are ready. As a rule of thumb you should have at least 2 years experience and be climbing at least V4 before before using a fingerboard. With bouldering sessions, try to work on overhanging problems but note that finger strength is the priority so don’t go so steep that you can only use jugs. With fingerboards, the most important grip to focus on is the half-crimp (fingers bent at 90 degrees). Hang and aim to hit failure between 5 and 10 seconds and do 3 – 6 sets, subject to time and ability. You can do arm and core work at the end of climbing sessions but don’t do deadhangs if your fingers are already tired from climbing.
3 AVOID INJURY! Always warm-up by doing some light cardio and mobility exercises (such as armswings and hip circles) then build progressively up through the grades. Never jump from easy to hard without doing mid-grade stuff as a stepping-stone. Do some supportive conditioning work to train your antagonist (opposition) muscles and prevent injuries that are associated with muscular imbalances. Key exercises are press-ups and finger extensions (using an elastic forearm extensor trainer). Do this a minimum of twice a week, either on rest days or at the end of climbing sessions.
4 DON’T FORGET ENDURANCE Most modern climbing walls are set up for bouldering and the result is that endurance training often gets overlooked. If you wish to be good at routes then seek out a decent circuit board and do laps, e.g. 20 – 40 hand moves for ‘power endurance’ (the type of fitness required for sport climbing) and 50 – 80 moves for ‘long endurance’ (the type of fitness required for trad climbing). Do 5 or 6 circuits for power endurance or 3 or 4 circuits for long endurance with rest times roughly equal to climbing time. Try to keep the difficulty level fairly constant and avoid going to ‘failure’ until the last couple of climbs. Neil on-sighting The Devil’s Alternative E6 6b at Shepherd’s Crag.
