My fellow equestrians can dream big when they see this amazing mud room designed by Scott Posno for a horse-loving homeowner. Customsized cubbies keep all her riding boots in perfect order.

This spring will mark my family’s seventh year in our house. During that time, we’ve lived through countless renovations – and have the credit card bills to prove it. The payoff, of course, is that we get to live in our wonderful, wacky, beautiful dream home. But while we adore our redone cozy family room, sleek kitchen and restful bedrooms, that’s kind of where it ends. My family is busy, like everyone else’s, and if we’re not snatching a meal together, binge-watching a new favourite Netflix show or getting some much-needed shut-eye, we’re out and about. That, however, is about to change. Last September, I was looking out the kitchen window at our backyard and wondering why we’ve never taken more advantage of our terrace. Sure, we have the occasional barbecue and my husband will catnap on our decrepit lawn furniture after a long shift (oh, and my stepdaughters have indulged in a few late night beer pong parties – don’t get me started!), but other than that the terrace stands abandoned. Although I’m not a huge fan of the Tuscaninspired terracotta and mustard-yellow ceramic tiles it sports, the space is in perfect condition. It gets ridiculously hot in the summer, but there’s a sweet roll-out awning that, despite listing slightly on the left, keeps the sun at bay. So what was the problem? One of my excuses was that there was no comfortable seating. The existing furniture I’d dragged from my old house had not held up, nor was its contemporary aesthetic appropriate for this more formal area. And due to the aforementioned renovation costs, there was minimal budget to furnish the space. Luckily, later that month I happened upon a set of outdoor furniture at a clearance centre that was perfect. Just $500 for a couch, two armchairs, two foot stools and a coffee table! The set was a floor model and had a few dings and scratches, but it was enormous value. Plus, the very kind salesperson threw in some outdoor toss cushions as well. But that wasn’t the best part. That came when we arrived home. Within minutes of setting up the conversation set, my family gravitated outside – and didn’t move back indoors until nearly midnight. It was one of our best evenings together. So if you ask me what I’m doing this summer, my answer is clear: I’ll be spending time outside with my husband, stepdaughters, two cats, one dog and the best $500 I’ve ever spent.

RECIPE REVELATIONS

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

I’m loving the simple healthy recipes and exquisite photos in Style at Home. So many recipes in magazines are tempting, but yours are practical and doable, too. They inspire me to actually follow through and serve them up! Many of us are changing our diets to be more cognizant of dairy-free options, and “Breakfast Bar” from Donna Hay’s new book Life in Balance (January 2017, page 92) provided just that!

My 11-year-old daughter and I both love your High or Low? column and always look at it together to see who’ll get it right. So I don’t know who was more thrilled to see the January High & Low issue arrive, me or my daughter! Thank you, Style at Home, not only for inspiring me to new heights with my home design, but for also helping my daughter develop an interest in interior design.

DESSERT OF THE MONTH

INGREDIENTS MAKES 1 THREE-LAYER CAKE

Lemon Cake 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1¾ cups granulated sugar + more for garnish 4 eggs 1 tbsp freshly grated lemon zest 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract 2¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1⅔ cups 2% milk 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice Blackberries for garnish Lemon slices in simple syrup for garnish

Lemon-Cream Cheese Icing 1 250-g package cream cheese, softened ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened 4 cups icing sugar 2 tbsp store-bought lemon curd 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°F. To make the lemon cake, beat the butter with the sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time; beat in the lemon zest and vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Gently fold in the lemon juice (the batter will look curdled). Divide the batter evenly among three greased and parchment paper-lined 8" round cake pans. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the centre of each cake comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Let the cakes cool in the pans on racks for 10 minutes; remove the cakes from the pans and carefully return to the racks to cool completely. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the icing. Beat the cream cheese with the butter in a large bowl until smooth. Add the icing sugar, one-third at a time, beating until the mixture is smooth.

26 |

STYLEATHOME.COM MAY 2017

Add the lemon curd and lemon juice and beat until smooth. To assemble, place one cake layer on a cake plate and spread a generous ⅔ cup icing over the top. Place the next layer on top of the iced cake and spread another ⅔ cup icing overtop. Repeat with the remaining cake layer. Dip the blackberries in a small shallow bowl filled with granulated sugar until coated. Arrange the berries on the top of the cake and add a few slices of preserved lemon. Refrigerate the cake until the icing firms up, about 30 minutes; slice and serve.

tip Make lemons in simple syrup by dissolving 2 cups granulated sugar in 2 cups boiling water and adding lemon slices; reduce heat and cook until the liquid is syrupy and the lemons are translucent, 30 to 45 minutes. Let cool and place on top of the iced cake with the sugarcoated blackberries.

BACK TO BRNO

Cantilevered chairs speak of Modernist design and industrial elements, neat and airy silhouettes, and that fine balance between form and function. Although celebrated architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and designer Lilly Reich’s MR50 chair of 1929-30 (better known as the Brno, named for the location of the Czech villa it was originally designed to inhabit) has reached icon status, it was not the first of its kind. Our High and Low cantilevered chairs also borrow from the B33 piece designed by Hungarian-born architect Marcel Breuer in 1926, Dutch architect and furniture designer Mart Stam’s 1926 S33 chair and Mies van der Rohe’s MR10 and MR20 chairs of 1927. Whatever their lineage, these beautifully proportioned and surprisingly supportive seats are still an elegant addition to any design lover’s space.

1. NURTURE MOTHER NATURE TEXT SARA CATION PHOTOGRAPHY ROBIN STUBBERT STYLING ANN MARIE FAVOT

“For decorating an outdoor space, my number one tip is not to compete with nature,” says decorator Cynthia Weber of her idyllic Ontario porch. To that end, she selected low-slung seating and a monochromatic palette in patterns that don’t beg for attention. “Enhance views – don’t detract from them,” she says. And with such verdant greenery and pretty dappled sunlight, why on earth would you want to?

view MASTER How decorator Cynthia Weber fashioned a fresh farmhouse porch worthy of its stunning rural setting.

3

As much as decorator Cynthia Weber loves to look out at the pastoral

landscape beyond her Huron County, Ont., porch, she also adores sitting and staring in the other direction: facing her 1878 home’s stone walls. “The mind boggles to think how much effort went into constructing this house, from hauling the stone via horse and cart to building it without modern machinery,” says Cynthia. “Plus, I’m mesmerized by the plethora of colour in the stonework.” That’s why, when decorating the sprawling 650-square-foot wraparound, she took palette inspiration from the stones themselves, opting for grey, black and white to complement the house rather than compete with it – in fact, it’s one of her porch decorating rules. Here, Cynthia shares her five other secrets to creating her outdoor space, which truly shines in the sun.

2. THINK INSIDE THE HOUSE

PHOTOGRAPHY XXXXXXXXXX

Step outside, and your porch should feel like an extension of the room you just came from – so opt for similar colours, patterns and accents. The stripes used in Cynthia’s kitchen are echoed here, pretty country crockery is proudly on display in a stunning indoorstyle vignette, and even the coffee table has interior provenance. “In the spirit of complete transparency, it’s a living room ottoman,” admits Cynthia, who had it slipcovered in an outdoor fabric and added casters so she could wheel it out of the rain when needed.

3. GO GREEN Essential to Cynthia’s outdoor style, fresh-cut flowers and lush plantings are peppered everywhere. “I keep things monochromatic using varying shades of the same hue,” she says. “I love the subtlety of it.” Even better? When she switches up the plant life – which she does often – she gives her porch a new look by introducing a different colour.

4. REPURPOSE PRETTY PIECES The indoor-outdoor coffee table isn’t the only piece Cynthia adopted from elsewhere. The bench – which seats six and accommodates catnaps – was salvaged from one of her decorating projects and the shelf brackets were constructed from leftover corbels found in the basement. “They’re the same ones used along our roofline, so it’s a fun, unexpected repetition,” she says.

5. STRIKE A POSE Stunning vignettes are a key ingredient of any well-styled home, so why should a pretty porch be any different? When curating hers, Cynthia chose an ornate vintage side table and shelves stocked with antique crockery and glass water bottles; her handy husband made the wooden tapas tray. And for something completely natural, she included an empty wasps’ nest, found at the edge of the forest, for its texture and sculptural look.

PREVIOUS PAGE Homeowner Candace Alongi painted the bed frame electric yellow to make a bright statement against the otherwise black and white colour scheme. Small triangular decals turn a plain wall into a focal point. “I chose them because I have no experience in hanging wallpaper, and they were super easy to apply,” says Candace. Positioning the bed and area rug against the wall, rather than under the window, allows for open floor space (all the better for playing on) and makes the 150-square-foot room seem bigger. RIGHT With the bedroom’s colour scheme in mind, Candace made

cheap and cheerful artwork by framing prints she designed and found online. The boldly striped teepee, while a decorative focal point, is absolutely child-friendly. “It’s lightweight,” says Candace, “so [my son] Massimo can drag it around the room and position it in different spots.” She added in a furry throw and toss cushions for coziness. BELOW “I specifically installed the bookshelf low on the wall so Massimo could reach his books,” says Candace. The lacquered nightstand is both stylish and practical – its one large drawer houses more books and small toys.

▶▶ The classic rhyme says little boys are made of “snips and

snails and puppy dog tails.”

But lifestyle blogger Candace Alongi of The Minted Mama didn’t subscribe to tradition when decorating a bedroom for her four-year-old son, Massimo. “I wanted an unexpected black and white colour scheme – not standard boy blues,” says Candace. “Yellow is one of my favourite colours so I made it the one pop in the room.” Having already designed a bright gender-neutral nursery for Massimo (featured in Style at Home’s June 2016 issue) that easily transitioned to a girl’s space when his baby sister Gemma (now 18 months) was born, Candace knew just how to decorate her son’s first big-boy bedroom. While her palette ensured freshness, fun and energy, it was equally important that the design have longevity. “I avoided making it too childish – which is tempting with kids’ rooms – because I wanted a space Massimo wouldn’t soon outgrow,” says Candace. “One that could suit him five, even 10, years from now.”

RIGHT & BELOW Stripes, polka dots and other geometric shapes add youthfulness and interest to the minimalist palette.

“I AVOIDED MAKING IT TOO CHILDISH – WHICH IS TEMPTING WITH KIDS’ ROOMS – BECAUSE I WANTED A SPACE MASSIMO WOULDN’T SOON OUTGROW.” Candace started with his bed. “It’s toddler-size now, but the frame can be extended into a twin so it’ll grow with him,” she explains. To fend off the child-centric look, she chose a sleek nightstand and dresser. “These pieces are definitely not kids’ furniture, but they complement the bed because they have a modern low-profile design,” says Candace. “Plus, they’re black, which will work when Massimo’s a teenager.” Yet for all its long-term practicality, this is still very much a little one’s room. Whimsical decals and artwork enliven the walls, while toys, trucks and a teepee layer in the fun elements kids crave. “Massimo loves playing in his room,” says Candace. “And at nap time, he takes his favourite books into his teepee and reads them until he falls asleep.” Anyone with a four-year-old boy in the house will agree – that is, indeed, a pretty great design. Six ways to build a stylish outdoor space that the whole family – from tots to adults – will use with glee. TEXT ERYN CHESNEY PHOTOGRAPHY JANIS NICOLAY

STYLEATHOME.COM MAY 2017

There's a whole world of beautiful outdoor furniture,

as well as a never-ending supply of backyard toys for kids, but how do you create a space that stylishly incorporates both? That was the task at hand for landscape designers Caitlin and Owen Black of Aloe Designs in this Richmond, B.C., backyard. The lacklustre yard of lawn, trees

and basic paving stones was a true blank slate. The homeowners – finance professionals with two young daughters – desperately wanted a retreat where they could unwind and entertain, but they didn’t want to sacrifice room for their kids to enjoy many summer days playing outside. So the designers beautifully blended style and function to create an outdoor oasis fit for the whole family. Here’s how they did it.

FLEX YOUR GREEN THUMB Containers let you incorporate lowmaintenance greenery into your yard without occupying space for games of tag or water balloon fights. Fill them with fragrant culinary herbs like lavender, rosemary and lemongrass for an aromatic element that will also amplify homecooked meals.

1. CREATE ROOMS “Consider each area of your yard its own room that also works within the landscape as a whole,” suggests designer Caitlin Black. Delineating areas for adults to cook, lounge and entertain, as well as spots for kids to play, organizes your yard and creates the illusion of space – which is especially important for any mid-sized city property, like this 2,500-square-foot one.

2. GO CUSTOM A lot of kids’ toys and play structures just aren’t that aesthetically pleasing. Avoid having your yard look like a nursery school by investing in custom pieces that fit within your existing style, such as this playhouse (built by Aloe

Designs), which is modern and architectural instead of pink and plastic. Being part of the design process allows you to create something you know your kids will love and use over time – not just for a few weeks.

3. MAKE IT MINI Petite furniture and accent rugs liven up a playhouse, making it a fun and comfortable spot for kids to let their imaginations run wild while the grown-ups relax nearby.

PREVIOUS PAGE The fridge was the only piece of the reno that didn’t go according to the original plan: Pre-construction, designer Cameron MacNeil suggested changing the fridge from a model with one large door to a French door option. “Its door swing takes up less space,” he explains. LEFT Tucked into a corner of the kitchen, a TV is accessible without being too noticeable thanks to the eye-catching Roman shade fabric next to it. “The TV was positioned so we could watch the morning news while having coffee at the island,” says one of the homeowners. “It swivels out then ‘disappears’ back into the niche when not being used.”

extension that would accommodate an open-concept kitchen and family room. That is, until designer Cameron MacNeil arrived. Having transformed two of the homeowners’ former properties, Cameron signed on to design the 300-square-foot addition and knew he wanted to rejig the plan from the get-go. Knowing that proper living rooms are so rarely used, Cameron campaigned to nix the room entirely and instead transform it into a formal dining room at the front of the house. He added a petite powder room (the first floor was previously devoid of one) and opened up the rest of the main floor to accommodate an even larger kitchen-slash-family room. After all, these homeowners – who are avid cooks and love hosting dinner parties – planned to use the kitchen. A lot. And a large space was essential to accommodate all their desired features: two ovens, a butler’s pantry and a show-stopping seven-foot waterfalledged-quartz island. (There are hidden six-inch-deep cupboards on the side with the stools – perfect for storing lesser-used items – and a built-in garbage disposal and dishwasher on the other.)

But among these splurges – including chefworthy appliances – there is modesty in the clean, pared-back design and budget-friendly elements, such as the vinyl wallpaper backsplash used on the side walls. “I love its subtle grasscloth-like texture,” says Cameron. “Plus, it’s wipeable and can be easily changed.” Such practicality in no way hindered the space’s charm. “The home has a classic aesthetic, and I wanted the kitchen to reference that but feel contemporary at the same time,” says the designer, who aptly chose customstained white oak floors and a soft grey palette as the envelope. “It’s a joy to cook here and have guests gather at the island for cocktails and conversation,” says one of the homeowners. “And whether or not we’re cooking and entertaining, just being in our kitchen is a real treat.” This reno just goes to show: Mixing form and function is always the recipe for success.

Wooden stools and hardwood floors warm up this sleek white and grey space.

RIGHT “This pantry leads to the dining room, and is super convenient – we use it every day,” says one of the homeowners. Though shallow, it features ample storage space, a microwave and a sink. “Plus, when we have a dinner party, dishes can sit here out of sight so the kitchen stays clutter-free,” she adds. city house is fine for a couple of chihuahuas, but pets with nostrils the size of apples need breathing room. With nine horses and three big dogs, this empty nester needed more space. She was living near the Southlands, a community on the west side of Vancouver that, though pretty, lacked the land needed for her horses to really get their trot on. She always fantasized about moving to a rural setting, and this patch of paradise in Langley, B.C., fit the bill. Located on four verdant acres, the property is conveniently next door to the homeowner’s eldest daughter, who is also an equestrian. When the place went up for sale, she seized the opportunity and made an offer. “This was the awesome acreage I had dreamed of owning, where I could have my animals right where I live,” she says. “In the city, I had to go to a barn to ride. But here, I look out my window and see horses – it’s a dream come true.”

LEFT The sprawling kitchen has tons of room to entertain and move around when family visits. Even better, there are plenty of places for people to sit while dinner is being made, from the dining table to the generous 12-foot island, which hides builtin recycling and garbage bins, a wine fridge and storage for extra dishware. To establish a country mood, designer Scott Posno devised a kitchen with traditional elements, such as the Shaker-style cabinetry, beadboard island backing and subway tile backsplash. It took about a month for a stonemason to fabricate this hunky beauty of a fireplace out of local basalt ledgestone. It’s broken up by a Douglas fir mantel. “The homeowner used to have a cabin on B.C.’s Hornby Island with a big stone fireplace, so we replicated it,” says Scott. “The farmhouse on the property, with its wraparound veranda, was cute,” says the homeowner. “But it wasn’t well built.” Plus, it was two storeys, with the kitchen on the upper floor. “I’m 67 years old – I don’t want to be doing too many stairs!” she says with a laugh. And so she decided to build a house from scratch. On a friend’s recommendation, she tapped local designer Scott Posno for the project. Known for his airy contemporary abodes, the custom-home designer brought the same sensibility here: Lean and unassuming, the 3,200-square-foot grey-shingled ranch respectfully blends into the landscape. It sits next to a charming old red barn that was retained during the year-long overhaul that commenced in spring 2014. Indoors, it’s all about the open-concept layout. “We were after a ground-oriented house that came from the client’s wish to be able to walk directly outside from any room without STYLEATHOME.COM MAY 2017

the interruption of stairs,” says Scott. Patios situated off both sides of the main living area (which has an exposed cathedral ceiling that soars to an incredible 20 feet) blur the line between inside and out. “There are nine sets of glass doors off the main-floor living areas alone,” Scott adds. This abundance of glass ensures natural light blissfully fills the home. There’s always a snippet of sun, sky and a sauntering horse or two in view, wherever one happens to be sitting. The master bedroom and bath are on the main level, so Scott dedicated the second floor – boasting three bedrooms and two baths – to the homeowner’s five children and five grandkids, who visit often. “It never feels too crowded, even though we’re a big group,” she says. For this tight-knit family, the roomy ranch is the fulfillment of a dream that started with their love of the countryside. “I’m so happy here,” says the homeowner. “I built this place so all the kids could come with their children and their dogs, because they all have big dogs, too,” she says. “There’s a great big pen for all of them to run around in. It’s a perfect spot for my family to vacation and enjoy country life.”

The homeowner’s bedroom is conveniently located on the main floor. SIDE TABLES, Barter; RUG, Salari Fine Carpet Collections; PRINT, The Poster Club.

"This was the awesome acreage I had dreamed of owning, where I could have my animals right where I live."

Scott installed a skylight in an upstairs bathroom to flood it with natural light – after all, the entire home gets great light, so why should this room be any different? White honeycomb floor tiles run right into the shower for a seamless look. “We also used the same cabinet design as in the kitchen to tie the spaces together,” notes Scott. spectacular home in an oceanside West Vancouver neighbourhood doesn’t just spring up overnight, even if it’s owned by an established builder-designer team. Julian Bannister (owner of J. Bannister Homes for 17 years) and his wife, Karen Sander (who acts as a designer on the majority of his projects), purchased this hillside lot 14 years ago for its breathtaking views and prime location – but didn’t start building their home here until much later. The couple knew the original house would eventually have to go. “It was a teardown when we bought it, with squirrels in the

roof and raccoons under the deck, but we knew we wanted to build here,” says Karen. So they lived elsewhere while saving up to construct the perfect place from scratch. It was 2011 when the pair finally broke ground for their 7,000square-foot dream home, which took 20 months to complete and now boasts a view-maximizing outdoor space with a covered patio, open-air kitchen, a pool and a yard. And thanks to the advantage of experience, the couple had a firm concept of what would suit both their aesthetic and their family’s busy lifestyle. “I’m always drawn to a minimal modern look, but I knew it wasn’t realistic for us,” says Karen. “We’ve got a little pack of kids [ages 10,

To bring texture to the home’s neutral envelope, the couple incorporated an intriguing mix of materials – concrete, bronze, steel and 120-year-old Canadian barnboard, for example – that add interest and withstand wear and tear. “We do a lot of hardwood floors in lots of houses we build,” says Karen, “but they don’t always hold up to kids playing around on scooters and roller skates – so we went with travertine.” However, Karen doesn’t mind a bit of wear; in fact, she welcomes it. “The kitchen table is scratched and dented and has glitter glue stuck in the grooves – and it puts a smile on my face,” she says. “It means we’re really enjoying the space to its fullest.” And that’s what the couple built this house for: enjoying their life and family, and relishing every moment. CHOCOLATE-GLAZED DOUGHNUTS WITH CRUNCHY ALMONDS MAKES ABOUT 25 DOUGHNUTS

Doughnuts ⅔ cup whole milk ¼ cup warm water (104°F to 113°F) 1½ tsp active dry yeast 2 egg yolks, at room temperature 3 tbsp butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp granulated sugar 2¼ cups all-purpose flour ¾ tsp salt 2¼ cups vegetable oil, for frying Almond Topping 5¼ oz almonds, chopped (about 1¾ cups) 1 egg white 1 tsp water Pinch salt 2 tbsp granulated sugar ¼ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp salt

Chocolate Glaze 75 g milk chocolate, chopped (about ⅔ cup) 75 g dark chocolate, chopped (about ⅔ cup) 4 tbsp unsalted butter Heat the milk in a saucepan over low heat just until lukewarm. Meanwhile, whisk the warm water and yeast together in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes. Stir the yeast mixture again, then add the warm milk, egg yolks, butter and sugar. Stir until the butter has melted and all the ingredients are incorporated. Stir the flour and salt into the bowl and work through using your hands or the dough hook of a stand mixer until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and knead until STYLEATHOME.COM MAY 2017

smooth. Grease a large bowl; place the dough in the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let rise until the dough has doubled in size, 1 to 1½ hours. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and roll out to 3 8" to 5 8" thick. Using a circle cookie cutter or an upside-down glass 2½" to 2¾" in diameter, cut out as many little circles from the dough as you can. Using a smaller circle cookie cutter, 1" to 1¼" in diameter, cut out the centre of each circle of dough. Gather up the dough scraps into a ball, roll it out again and cut out more doughnuts the same way. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the doughnuts on it; cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let the doughnuts rise until doubled in size, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Pour the oil into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat to 355°F. Lower one or two doughnuts into the hot oil with a slotted spoon and fry until golden, about 1 minute on each side. Handle the doughnuts carefully so you don’t press out the air bubbles that formed during rising. Lift the fried doughnuts out of the oil with the slotted spoon and drain on paper towels or a wire cooling rack set over parchment paper. Continue until all the doughnuts have been cooked. To make the almond topping, preheat the oven to 300°F. Place the almonds in a large bowl. Whisk the egg white, water and pinch of salt together in a small bowl. Add the egg white mixture to the almonds, stirring until the nuts are completely covered. Add the sugar, cinnamon and salt and stir until the almonds are coated. Spread the mixture on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake until the almonds are golden brown, 23 to 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Meanwhile, make the chocolate glaze. Place all the ingredients in a medium saucepan and warm over low heat, stirring, until melted. Pour the mixture into a deep bowl. Dip one side of each doughnut into the chocolate glaze and then sprinkle with the almond topping; serve immediately.

DOUGHNUTS WITH CREAMY NUTELLA FILLING MAKES ABOUT 25 DOUGHNUTS

Doughnuts ¼ cup warm water (104°F to 113°F) 1½ tsp active dry yeast ⅔ cup whole milk 2 egg yolks, at room temperature 3 tbsp butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp granulated sugar 2¼ cups all-purpose flour ¾ tsp salt

2¼ cups vegetable oil, for frying Confectioner’s sugar, for dusting Nutella Filling 7 oz cream cheese ¾ cup Nutella Crunchy Topping 3 graham crackers or digestive biscuits 1 cup confectioner’s sugar 1 tsp cinnamon Pinch salt

Prepare the dough as directed for ChocolateGlazed Doughnuts with Crunchy Almonds (see recipe on previous page). Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and roll out to 3 8" to 5 8" thick. Using a circle cookie cutter or an upside-down glass 2½" to 2¾" in diameter, cut out as many little circles from the dough as you can. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the doughnuts on it; cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let the doughnuts rise until doubled in size, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Meanwhile, make the Nutella filling. Beat the cream cheese and Nutella in a medium bowl. Fit a pastry bag with a small tip (no larger than ¼" in diameter). Fill the bag with the Nutella filling, place the bag in a bowl, and refrigerate while you make the topping and fry the doughnuts. To make the crunchy topping, crush the graham crackers or pulse in a food processor until crumbs form; transfer to a small bowl. Add the confectioner’s sugar, cinnamon and salt and stir well; set aside. Pour the oil into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat to 355°F. Lower one or two doughnuts into the hot oil with a slotted spoon and fry until golden, about 1 minute on each side. Lift the fried doughnuts out of the oil with the slotted spoon and drain on paper towels or a wire cooling rack set over parchment paper. Continue until all the doughnuts have been cooked. Dip each doughnut into the crunchy topping. Press the tip of the pastry bag into the side of each doughnut and fill with Nutella filling; insert the tip far enough in the doughnut that the filling doesn’t come out the sides. Dust with more confectioner’s sugar; serve immediately. STYLEATHOME.COM MAY 2017
