A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

oal....Sustainability! The year 2019 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for sustainability, with nsumer and corporates taking center stage. Not just product-wise, but ts and designers are taking pains to make great-looking buildings and is no second thought on sustainability adding more value, to a building’s local environment and to the lives of its occupants. Team TIHG travelled to major fairs across the globe and found that designers and brands are taking this concept very seriously, by either using material that are eco-friendly or giving second life to already existing material. While doing our research on top sustainable brands (to be featured in April Edition), we realised that sustainable products are now very stylish as well as functionally innovative. The design approach of the brands have changed substantially; with huge experimentation on colours and prints. I loved the pet-friendly brand LABONI (Pgxx) that is meant for design lovers, yet the materials used to make the products are all-100 per cent natural. This is a design-inspired edition that has everything from Scandinavian decor to boho-chic and minimal magic to colourful spaces. We have also tried to update you with decor-filled pages focused on different regions of India. The story on makeovers will change the idea of ‘less is more’ and ‘more is more’ in your living spaces. Last but not the least, we would like to encourage all our readers to help save and protect the environment and also to promote Make In India products!

JOURNEY From contemporary to modern and simple to unusual

Spectacular Loft Homes Around The World

Sophisticated Designer's Table

Travel Sojourn We are a travel freak couple. We love to travel across continents and visit different countries. For us, TIHG is the right source in terms of travel. The Ideal Getaway section is what we eagerly await month after month. As usual, the February issue threw up surprise galore in the form of Iceland, France and Vietnam. All the three destinations are super romantic destinations. After some deliberations, brain-storming sessions, we finally settled for Vietnam, a country known for it’s rich history, art and hospitality, and which we are yet to explore. Thanks TIHG for being a guiding star! Vibhuti Garg, New Delhi

Future Green There was a time when India was a land in abundance with greenery. Every street, every corner of the road had big trees. Today, sadly times have changed. Tall skyscrapers, glass buildings and the urge to expand further to accommodate the ever growing population is taking a toll on the environment. However, all is not lost, the younger generation is slowly, but surely understanding the value of planting more trees. But, I believe that it all starts from the ground level - our home. It is important to educate our children about the importance of planting plants in our home and the surrounding environment. TIHG as a home decor magazine is doing a great job through Green House, where it is educating the readers about the importance of indoor and outdoor gardening. Keep up the good work, and please if possible try and increase the pages for green articles. Prashant Rane, Kudal, Maharashtra

A Long Legacy Future Spectacles I have been a fan of TIHG since 2013. I don’t have any one such perfect article. For me all features are interesting and educative. However, there is a feature in the magazine, which stands out always - Designer Speak. The word ‘designer’ is very common, however what appears in the magazine is simply outstanding. TIHG explores the word designer to the hilt. In every issue there is a surprise either in the form of material designers, wood designers, wrought iron designers, etc. There is a saying - a magazine that explores does wonders for its readers. Looking forward to getting exposed to such designers in the issues to come. Tiara Advani, Mumbai

TIHG since inception has been spreading cheers and happiness through its colourful layouts, life size images, reader-friendly articles and a positive approach. It entertains, educates, and spreads a message that along with development it is important to care for the environment. It’s a complete family magazine replete with everything that a family can look forward to read and get inspired. Manisha Kamat, Mumbai

Event Report

ISH 2019 Over 2,400 exhibitors, including all the market leaders and technological pioneers from Germany and abroad, Messe Frankfurt’s show ISH will be showcasing their products, many of them for the ďŹ rst time in the world, from 11 to 15 March 2019

France being the partner country, ISH 2019 will continue to foster an exchange of ideas and experiences at international level during the show. ISH is an exhibition that showcases future-proof products and services for building engineering and highlights a large number of practical solutions and addresses specifically some of the political and economic issues of the day. The ISH Water section concentrates, first and foremost, on sustainable sanitation solutions and ultra-modern bathroom design. This area concerns, amongst other things, intelligent water-management systems and how best to make sure they are secure and safe and how best to regulate and monitor them. And clean drinking water, too, is a hugely important area, specifically against the background of increasing urbanisation. At the same time, we must not forget design considerations in the bathroom. The challenges for bathroom planning in the future continue to reflect the need to bring together the various aspects that result from demographic change, together with issues such as health, wellness, comfort

26 | March 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

and convenience, not forgetting the sparing use of resources. And there will be plenty of exhibitors showcasing ground-breaking solutions for the bathroom, here.

LYCS Architects

People who live with cats always feel that putting away the cat from your laptop is like a sentimental ritual of temporary farewell or dragging them from beneath the furniture is struggle. Thus, the design of CATable was a fusion of these experiences, and a locus where the interaction occurs. It is a table for us, and a paradise for cats. It consists of four pieces of cubic wooden module in exactly the same size. Each one has a particular path for the cat to stroll, and the remainder space would be used upto the cat lover’s own need: as stools, or tea table, short ark, or even as a book shelf.

PET LOVE

Four architects take their work a notch higher and designed the most playful and happy place for the pet to rest IMPRESSIONS: SHIVANGI ASTHANA

Studio Lisboeta

Based on the idea that our society is becoming increasingly nomadic and aesthetically conscientious, Studio Lisboeta created a portable travel house, which looks like a super-sized travelling bag, with elements like the snug space, window and feeding bowl designed to keep the dog happy and entertained. Their concept plays with the collective memory of objects and scale. To make the best use of the beautiful wood, base models were sustainably created for curves from only four, instead of 38 construction grade plywood boards, thus reducing waste. Each one of the 156 pieces have been CNC cut and meticulously assembled in a jigsaw process. Also, they prefer simple, bold and playful designs accentuated by contrasting patterns or colours. It is an architectural hen house to breed and retreat and is composed of stacked and fused segments. The height refers to the pecking order that is naturally present by chickens. The higher the nest, the more secure it is, and to place in the pecking order to breeding segments are divided. The interior is in addition to all the comfort provided with interior lighting, powered by solar panels on the roof. During winter chickens lay no eggs. The interior lighting simulates - the days are longer, so that chickens lay egg even in winter.

SPARK Architects

Sometimes designing furniture as per your interests result in creating a unique wonderland for your dog. The terrace of detachable individual dog houses are created for different sized dogs set around, and a community drinking bowl is placed in the centre for frequent interaction of the dogs. Rattan used in the collection is an essential boho material with its organic, natural textures and soft tones. But adding brighter shades to it will break the conventional pattern to add style and some kitsch.

Trend Report

What’s trending? A season opener for new trends and textile innovations, Heimtextil is a show to find everything in one place: interior textiles, interior design and interior trends Impressions: Ruhi Singh

Despite the economic downturn, Heimtextil saw an increase in the number of exhibitors with an extremely positive development. With 3,025 exhibitors from 65 countries, Heimtextil has a stronger and more international slant than it has had for 15 years. The 49th edition of the fair was showcasing many new concepts and the top themes of architecture, hotels, sustainability and sleep. The right combination of themes and product segments were revised in a better way for specific target groups. The show was also focused to support retailers by offering innovative concept solutions for the point of sale and inspiration for experience-based business models. Trend Space The inspirational heart of the fair was the new Heimtextil ‘Trend Space’. With the title ‘Toward Utopia’, it provides a preview of the design developments of the 2019/20 season as conceived by London’s FranklinTill Studio and staged by the Frankfurt studio Markgraph. Heimtextil is thus

bringing the progressive themes of trends, textile design and digital printing together on one hall level, creating an area full of inspiration and future technologies. Textile Contract Furnishing Focused on presenting solutions for textile contract furnishing that are individul, sustainable and functional, the visitors experienced an innovative presentation “Carbet by Heimtex”, a joint promotion by the Association of the German Home Textile Industry. The space was filled with high quality textile floor coverings by leading suppliers especially for the contract sector. The hall was the first point of contact for interior designers and hospitality industry partners with a total of 500 exhibitors presenting their products. The Topic ‘Sleep’ With the title ‘Sleep’, ‘The Future Forum’, a new information area in the foyer of hall 11.0 highlighted the themes of science & digital, sport, the hotel industry and sustainability during the four days of the fair. In hall 11.0, international market leaders presented innovations from the ‘Smart Bedding’ product segment: mattresses, bedding and sleep systems, etc. Well-known companies from all over the world were on board, particularly from Germany, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Japan and Australia. A new trend: Sustainability A number of Heimtextil exhibitors presented progressive solutions to the water consumption in the textile industry and the problem of micro and ocean plastics. Christian Fischbacher, for example, produces decorative and upholstery fabrics made from used PET bottles. Erfal also uses recycled PET bottles to produce sun protection systems. And MHZ tackles the issue of ocean plastic and uses it to produce the innovative Greenscreen Sea Tex fabric.

DO MORE WITH LESS

Far from boring, bold, functional and highly memorable, that’s what Minimalist Decor is Research & Impressions: Shruti Jain

I

n theory, a style like minimalism - the art of decorating with less - sounds easy to pull off. However, it’s more than whiting out a room, throwing in some sharp geometrics and adding neutral furnishings. In fact, you have to put a lot of thought when creating a livable minimalist space - one that feels warm and inviting rather than cold and clinical. One thing this style demands is to pare down the furnishings to the bare essentials so that what’s left is a set of curated objects that deliver maximum impact. Minimalism, essentially, is not conductive to a colour-intense experience. You want your objects to speak for themselves and too much colour will be distracting from the Z.River. Studio

overall style and details. That being said, venturing beyond the monotone is no sin. Tightly edit your colour palette; use colours that work well together and maintain a feeling of simplicity. For instance, yellow undertones give white paint a warmer and creamier appearance, while blue undertones give a crisper look. Concrete and wood are two of the most popular flooring options for minimalist design as they draw the eye as cozy focal points. Since there is less to distract the eye in minimal spaces, the mantra to adopt is -better, not more. Invest in those pieces, which have a quality design that will make a beautiful statement and stand the test of time.

Hackers Wood

A new generation of wood artists are pushing the limits of wood by sculpting it into radical forms, carving near impossible objects of beauty Impressions: Benoy Sebastian

Bethan Gray, (Bethan Gray Design)

What prompted you to become a product designer? Looking back, I believe that one of the most important factors was the encouragement from my family. My grandfather was a research forester and used to make and carve items for me as a child. I think I inherited his passion for trees and wood. My mother and father encouraged this and I then studied three dimensional design at the university. How do you decide the theme for your projects? My maternal ancestors were Romany gypsies, who originated from Rajasthan and travelled all over the Middle East, before settling in Wales. They went on an incredible journey across continents - I have since visited many of the places they passed through, inspired by my own love of travel, art and culture. My mission

70 | March 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

now is to bring contemporary relevance to the traditional techniques from these regions - keeping both cultural narratives and craft skills alive. What comes first - the materials or the design idea? It is actually the combination of both, and it comes from working closely with master craftsmen. Micth Abdul Karim Crites, based in Delhi and Jaipur, introduced me to various collections in Islamic sections of museums as well as primary research, and I designed the Ruby Tree collection based on my design ideas and the materials his workshop specialised in. I am now delighted to be working in partnership with Shamsian, a renowned Omani artist and master craftsman who showcased middle eastern techniques, and who brings an exquisite appreciation and meticulous approach to the intricacies of marquetry, which I have

paired with my contemporary approach. What inspires you? My biggest source of inspiration is my heritage, travel and meeting people from all over the world and understanding what inspires them. I’m constantly taking pictures, especially when I’m travelling, and often use the images on mood boards when I’m forming a creative direction for a new project. The skills of the crafts people that we collaborate with are greatly influential to me, my aim is to celebrate and preserve their skills in my designs, and connect their work to new commercial markets all over the world. What the future beholds? I’m actually currently working in partnership on a whole new collection to be launched in Milan in April 2019 during Salone, that uses fully sustainable materials such as shells and feathers.

Designer Speak

Evan Dunstone, (Dunstone Design) What prompted you to become a product designer? I have deep love for natural timber, and I wanted to be the best craftsman that I could be. I did not start designing until I felt that I was a truly capable wood worker. I established my own furniture studio in 1998, and from then on my ability to design was as important as my ability to make. How do you decide the theme for your projects? I value the performance of my furniture above all other considerations. I specialise in chairs, and I want my chairs to be a true invitation to sit. I want anyone who sits in one of my chairs to know that they are sitting in something special, not just because of how it looks, or what it’s made from, but because of how it feels. I am only concerned about how a piece looks once I have arrived at the function of the piece. What comes first - the materials or the design idea? Wood demands respect and understanding from the designer and the craftsman. Whenever I design something, I am thinking about how it will be made and how this design will show off the potential of the timber. The materials and the design idea must always be in harmony. The best thing that you have designed and are proud about?

The Cataract Ergonomic Rocker is my most complete design. I designed 21 chairs and stools before I designed the Cataract, and I needed each one of those designs to be able to design the Cataract. It is successful ergonomically, aesthetically and as a piece of woodcraft. What inspires you? As I get older, I find it harder and harder to be inspired. I have seen so much furniture and explored so many designs, that sometimes I wonder if there are any good ideas left. The ideas are fewer, but they are better. When those ideas strike, I get a rush of the old inspiration and I want to get back to the work bench and start making again. What the future beholds? I have reduced my team down to two master craftsmen and me. We make what we like and we like what we make. I am now freer than I have ever been to follow an idea. I no longer have to chase work very hard or expand the workshop or worry so much about the bills. I can be a designer/craftsman and make the things that I think are worth making. Designer Speak

Filip Havranek and Kristina Lugonja, (Spacetime) What prompted you to become a product designer? Product design is interdisciplinary - it’s an exciting combination of psychology, art, and engineering. Wood is of our special interest mainly because of our surroundings. Croatia is famous for its abundance of high quality and readily available oak wood. Due to our country’s natural resources and history in wood production, we have a lot of experience in this particular material. How do you decide the theme for your projects? Our work starts with recognising a problem, or user’s need and then we try to solve it in a most straightforward way. After that, things start to evolve in their own way - we choose the best material, the simplest shape of a product and production methods. The theme of our products comes at the end, and it’s usually a sum of all these processes. What comes first - the materials or the design idea? This is one of the hardest things for a designer to decide. Every idea needs to be formed into physical object sooner or later, and if you don’t think about the materials and the production methods from the start, you will probably end up with an idea that can’t be made

72 | March 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

into a product. Likewise, if you start the other way around, you can end up with a product that is easy and economical to make, but will have a mediocre design. It’s a balancing act, and it comes with experience. The best thing that you have designed and are proud about? The plateau bed is one of our favourite products because it challenges the classic bed design. It has a unibody construction composed of solid wood, metal and plywood, forming a very clean looking platform (a sort of plateau), which has the function of the traditional bed slats. What inspires you? The most important thing for a designer is to be present, to search for beauty in seemingly ordinary things - as a designer, you need to pay attention to how people behave, act, need, what they worry about, and want - because that’s what we try to understand and solve. What the future beholds? The bravest thing that we did was a decision to launch our own furniture company Spacetime. Our goal is to become the apple for furniture industry: a small number of products that are well-thought out.

Designer Speak

Nathan Day, (Nathan Day Design) What prompted you to become a product designer? I was going to study fine art at university, but my dad, who came from a trade background wasn’t sure how that would generate an income suitable to support a family. I had a love for woodwork at school, so he approached a local furniture maker that he knew to see if he would give me a job. Luckily he did. That was 20 years ago and I’m still grateful for that job and for my dad setting it up for me. How do you decide the theme for your projects? I design pieces that I would want in my home. Pieces that are comfortable on the eye, but have great integrity. Pieces where the technical complexity remains hidden, but with a level of finish and detailing that can only be achieved by skilled craftsmen. What comes first - the materials or the design idea? Most of the time the design idea comes first, then the materials are thoughtfully selected to bring that design to life. Occasionally, you will come across a special piece of timber thinking that you will design a piece around. Usually this timber is set aside and it may be years before the right client comes who

will appreciate it. The best thing that you have designed and are proud about? I would say my Vista St Dining Table. It’s our most commercially successful product. It’s a dining table that was originally designed for my sister. The table is a perfect example of clean and elegant aesthetics, and is highly functional. What inspires you? More than anything - I really love technical furniture making. If there is a technique I want to try (like steam bending), I’ll try and work it into a design. I was lucky enough to train in a historic workshop in England. It was heavily influenced by the English arts and craft style and I fully embraced this style early on. My aesthetic has most certainly evolved, but the ethos of that particular furniture movement I try and carry forward in my work. What the future beholds? Last year we built our first workshop. It’s a great 400m2 space. We have already completed some fantastic projects including 21 large scale meeting tables for a new government building in Perth. We are going to build in a showroom shortly, which will add another dimension to our business.

A great idea for a good design is to choose a firm contrast between the floor, the cabinets and the walls. This doesn’t mean a clash between your red tiles with the blue painted surfaces. Instead, look at cool grey stone and wooden cabinets, or go for a light cream or white colour scheme. Bright

colours will generally upset the harmony of the overall design and should be avoided as far as possible. Kitchen islands are a nice feature, which allows you to include creative stools and add more functionality for coffees and light snacks. When it comes to lighting, it’s better to use recessed lights that are built into the kitchen fittings. Try to give the impression that only natural light is being used, and it will add to the overall effect. For decoration, there are a number of superb options for kitchen wallpaper, which will not get damaged by the cooking smoke and will add some charming patterns to the bare walls. If you have a larger space, then it’s good to consider an open plan kitchen. So, be inspired when you cook up your masterpieces by designing a custom-built kitchen, which you are proud of, and would love to flaunt.

Strikingly Unusual A peek into homes based on natural surroundings by architects who are inspired by nature to create beautiful, breathtaking masterpieces that blend into the local landscape Impressions: Benoy Sebastian

AR. AMAN AGGARWAL Charged Voids

RESIDENCE 913 Karnal, Haryana

T

he idea was to design a house that brings its occupants in close contact with elements of nature in order to lend a strong spiritual character. The overall concept was devised as a free plan with interconnecting volumes, that emphasise the sense of nothingness overlooking the courtyard and a blank stone wall painted in light. Spaces like courtyard and verandah were reinterpreted to suit the urban context. The plan was organised around a northern courtyard and water body with the central space, i.e., the living room looking into it. The entrance was conceived through a screened verandah overlooking the water body on one side and the living room in the front. This allowed for a complete absence of window coverings as no direct sunlight penetrated the central space, but there was ample natural light throughout the day. The interconnecting volumes in the section allow the cross axes to be visible as soon as one enters the house. Residence 913 houses a total of three rooms, two master bedrooms for the father and son and a guest room. The father is housed on the lower floor while the son’s room and the guest room are planned on the upper level. The father’s room and the son’s room are organised in such a way that they open into the central space, diagonally in the section thus creating a strong visual connectivity.

he front facade sets the tone for what lies within, with a ‘corner of windows’ that recycles old windows and doors of demolished houses in the city. This becomes a major backdrop for the living room with an exposed concrete faceted ceiling above countered by the polished white marble with intricate brass inlay on the floor. Metal pipe leftovers pieced together like bamboo form a ‘pipe wall’ integrating structural columns, rainwater pipes and a sculpture of spouts that in the monsoon are a delight for all the senses. In the central courtyard, on one side scrap rusted metal plates are riveted together, Kitsch coloured tile samples retain a planter in the middle and on the third side is a wall clad in cut-waste stone slivers lifted off the back of stone cutting yards and waste generated on site. Hundred-year-old columns from a dismantled house bring back memories, and nostalgia is nourished with a lightweight, steel and glass pavilion (with solar panels above) on the terrace level overlooking fabulous views down the hillside. This approach is reinforced again in the interior materials and elements. It plays up this contrast between the old and the new, the traditional and the contemporary, the rough and the finished. You will find use of recycled materials like old textile blocks, flooring out of old Burma teak rafters and purlins, colonial furniture, fabric waste (chindi) along with new ways of using traditional elements and materials like carved wooden mouldings, beveled mirrors, heritage cement tiles, etc.

H-CUBE HOUSE Surat, Gujarat

T

he H-Cube House strikes a contemporary and modern note in a nondescript urban milieu. Architecturally, the form is derived by cutting up the structure (specifically, the levels that house the living spaces) into four cubes, and shifting one quarter (on the upper level) out, to create a cantilevered block. A shift in material (concrete as opposed to white paint) distinguishes this volume further. Within it, is housed the master bedroom. The elevation also strikes an equilibrium between solidity and lightness; opacity and transparency. Below the cantilevered concrete block of the master bedroom, for instance, is a long L-shaped puncture spanning the two walls of the living room. Aligned to the client brief, the colour scheme is neutral and the material palette, minimal. Exposed concrete, white plaster, black limestone and teakwood are the mainstays of the unobtrusive shell, which is then overlaid with bright (but not overly so) soft furnishings and accessories. The materials have been deliberately left bare, bereft of any cosmetic additions, to let their purity shine through. Given its location, the house necessarily became an introvert one. The connections to the outside became discreet, shielded, which meant that ventilation had to be carefully resolved. Louvered windows in the south-west corner (on both levels) allow cool breeze in, while the warm air escapes through the vents of the skylight and windows along the eastern face. Additionally, the master bedroom has been given a slit-like sky-light just above the bed, which creates a living artwork on the exposed concrete wall, with the sciagraphy that plays through the day, and indeed, across season.

Architect Speak COURTYARD HOUSE Ahmadnagar

T

he Courtyard House is planned with two parallel double storey blocks on either side of an open-to-sky court; connected at the upper level, by a 10’ wide terrace bridge. The entire structure is united by a long sloping Mangalore tiled roof. A rough Nevada stone clad loggia forms an inviting foyer for the home, its Warli painted masonry and square openings giving a wada like feel to the space. Inside the house, a cozy living room is illuminated by a large glazed wall overlooking a serene landscaped court. Semi-private spaces like the dining room and kitchen flow into the family room, with services strategically concealed towards the back of the house. The courtyard acts as the pivotal element, forming the connecting link between primary functional spaces; and essentially, between all family members, its attractive ambience encouraging outdoor living, and promoting a spiritual connection between the residents and their natural environment. A central mango tree along with a seated Buddha sculpture lends the open space a sense of calm, transforming the semi open verandah into a contemplative retreat, complete with a rustic wooden swing. Towards the east, the greenery filters into the grandparents’ room, to fuse with a private semi-covered verandah; beyond which, a vehicular entry allows a car parking space. A red stucco finished staircase forms a lightwell, illuminating the living spaces through a skylight, as it connects to the basement and the first floor. The first-floor lobby houses a library and study, linking the guest and master bedroom on the west block with the terrace bridge leading to the east block. The suspended connecting lobby overlooks the courtyard below, forming a breezy sit out for the first floor. Bedrooms are provided with bay windows and private sit outs; a hierarchy of private, semi-private and family open spaces ensuring varying degrees of privacy to all inhabitants.

See Through House What do you call a house that channels sunshine from skylight right through the center of each level? That’s right, a design marvel! RESEARCH: SHRUTI JAIN

ccording to the architects of this marvellous home, Kube Architecture, the owners of this traditional Washington row house desired a space of openness and light: “un petit e biggest challenge was to completely transform the narrow, dark building with almost no natural light, into a modern light-filled space. In order to achieve this, a simple floor plan was established, with no dividing walls and all programmatic elements running along the party walls. Glass floors are aligned on every level as

a transparent “volume of light,” piercing the roof and creating a tapestry of solid and void inside the house. Floor plates are fully functional, allowing light and views to run vertically unobstructed throughout the house. The large glass openings provide such a vast amount of natural light that there is very little need for artificial light sources. Through simple ceiling

fans and natural cross-ventilation, air moves freely through the space, requiring very little mechanical ventilation. LED lighting lines the perimeter of the glass openings, so they glow at night. In addition to sustainable systems, “green” materials include bamboo flooring and no-VOC paint.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BED

THE QUANTITY OF SLEEP YOU GET IS IMPORTANT, BUT IT’S THE QUALITY OF YOUR SLEEP THAT YOU REALLY HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO. ONE IMPORTANT FACTOR THAT CONTRIBUTES TO A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP IS THE RIGHT MATTRESS. good night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. In fact, it’s just as important as eating healthy and exercising. It’s like a battery recharging, the battery being our brain. Sleep isn’t merely a time when your body shuts off. The quality of your sleep directly affects your mental and physical health and the quality of your waking life, including your productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune system, creativity, vitality, and even your weight. The amount

of sleep required varies according to age. Newborns require almost 16 - 18 hours & the requirement decreases as one grows older. Teenagers require 9 hours & adults require an average of 7-8 hours. The Elderly require 6-7 hours. The quantity of sleep you get is important, but it’s the quality of your sleep that you really have to pay attention to. One important factor that contributes to a good night’s sleep is the right mattress. Considering we spend around one-third of our life in bed it is worth doing some research into getting it right.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MATTRESS

BRANDS AVAILABLE IN INDIA CENTURY

TYPES OF MATTRESSES There are broadly five types of mattresses available in India: Coir mattresses: Coir or coconut fiber is fiber from the husk of coconuts. Among other uses, it is used as a natural bedding material. Generally, coir is used in the middle and upper layers of mattresses to provide support or responsive softness by adding more or less density of the material. Spring mattresses: A traditional spring mattress doesn’t adjust or feel differently based on body temperature unless they come topped with memory foam. The top layer of a spring mattress is generally known as the comfort layer, and some companies with add memory foam to enhance the perceived comfort, support, and quality of the mattress. Foam mattresses: Foam mattresses rely on air trapped within aerated substances to offer support and bounce. Foam mattresses generally consist of three broad types: polyurethane foam,

memory foam, and foam latex. Memory foam mattresses: Memory foam is popular because of the way it gradually conforms to your body as you sleep. If you sleep on your side, it offers the shoulder and hip support you need. The memory foam contours to your body and allows you to feel partially surrounded by the mattress while being supported. Latex mattresses: A latex mattress combines latex foam with either springs or reflex foam to create a supportive and durable sleep surface. Because latex is a natural product, some latex mattresses are often combined with other natural fillings to create the perfect natural mattress.

The mattresses of Centuary ranges from Coir, Foam, Memory foam to Spring mattresses and combinations of these catering to the variety of demand. Centuary’s biggest USP has been their product leadership - being the first company in India to introduce Green Gel technology which are gel-infused beds made of synthetic materials that are more breathable than plain memory foam. Also, recently, they have also introduced Beddy – a specialized child mattress which is India’s first branded child mattress. Prices of their Comfort, Smart, Wellness, Signature, and Innovative Collections of mattresses ranges between `8,000 to ` 80,000

KURL-ON Kurl-on manufactures a variety of mattress, ranging from Natural Coir, Foam, Memory Foam, Spring and Hybrid mattress. Recently, Kurl-on has launched STR8 technology mattressIndia’s first sag-proof mattress and Sleep Station Mattress in a Box, targeting the young consumers, leading busy daily

routines and looking for higher comfort and convenience. The company also has a range of specialised mattresses called Spine Care and Ortho mattresses. Kurl-on also manufactures customised mattress suitable to individual needs and pricing of the mattresses ranges from INR 5000 to INR 1,50,000 depending on size, type, materials used etc.

HASTENS Hastens makes beds with the same natural material as when the first beds were made, over 160 years ago. The temperature regulation in the beds by virtue of Cotton, Wool and Horse Tail Hair, helps in increasing the deep sleep period of the sleep. All the beds are made of horsetail hair, which transport moisture so that your body can regulate the temperature around it. Cotton and wool, which contribute to an optimal sleeping climate. Flax, which diverts and prevents static electricity from occurring. Finally, slow-growing northern pine, which gives stability. These beds also come with a 25 years warranty on the springs and the wooden frame. They are available in India for a price range between 5 lacs to 40 lacs.

WAKEFIT While Wakefit only sells two kinds of mattresses, each of their offerings is aimed at providing a solution to a plethora of problems. Their Orthopaedic Mattresses are best suited for people with back problems and other issues as it provides support to one’s spine which is achieved with a specialized 3 layer construction. TIHG Guide

MATTRESSES BASED ON SLEEPING POSITION Your sleeping position is also important when choosing your mattress. Whether you go for a memory foam mattress, latex mattress, coil mattress, or a spring mattress, it is important that you let your sleeping style dictate the choice of mattress firmness. Firm mattress tops are best suited if you sleep mostly on your back or stomach, giving you the proper comfort and support. Plush layers work best for helping sooth pressure points throughout your body as you sleep. Pillowtop mattre layers are constructed of a material soft enough to let your body sink in and are particularly suited to side sleepers.

Myths vs Facts Myth #1: The age of the mattress does not affect your sleep. Fact: Mattress age is a big contributor to a mattress’ quality. The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7-10 years, depending on comfort and support. The truth is that the life of a mattress varies wildly, which depends on how you take care of it, how you sleep on it and how often you rotate it. Myth #2: A hard mattress is best for a bad back. Fact: Your spine takes a natural ‘S’ shape as you grow. Your spine is shaped that way so it acts as a spring: it is flexible when under pressure. When you lie on a hard mattress, the curve of your back is unsupported. The mattress will support your shoulders and hips, but not the middle part of your spine. That will tend to sag down, put pressure on your vertebrae and lead to back pains. A hard mattress may suit you if you always sleep on your side, not otherwise. Myth #3: You can remove dust mites by washing your sheets. Fact: Washing your sheets might remove dust mites from the sheets, but most live within the mattress itself. An innerspring mattress can harbor zillions of dust mites. Steam cleaning the mattress can help – but only to an extent. The best way to protect yourself from dust mites is to use a washable mattress protector on top. Myth #4: You should regularly rotate or flip your mattress. Fact: The advanced construction of mattresses today means there is no need for flipping, but rotating is recommended unless you have a no-turn or memory foam mattress. Myth #5: Buy a mattress with the longest warranty possible. Fact: Mattress warranties do not refer to the life expectancy of your purchase. The warranty covers workmanship and materials and just like many products used with extreme regularity, you’ll notice wear and tear before you reach the end of the warranty. Supriyo Karmakar- Performance- the Visible and Invisible line

Art Speak

What if the artist becomes the art itself? This time, Monica Jain, the curator-director of Art Centrix Space talks of another aspect of art- the performative one; a far cry from what that goes up on pedestals or hangs on the wall.

Yoko Ono, the internationally acclaimed artist once said, “I thought art was a verb, not a noun”. She later used it in her performance work titled ‘Cut Piece’ in 1964. I think it sums up the very idea of performance art so simply and so beautifully. Artists have always been known for their experimentation, for doing the unimaginable. In fact, part of the fascination for art is that it remains largely unfathomable. Art is an endless query. While art reflects life, questioning the social fabric or the changing human condition, sometimes life itself takes longer to catch up with

art. Most artistic geniuses are not recognised until they are dead or at least until the latter part of their life or career, and when they do, they end up becoming brands as we identify certain kind of art with their names. In fact it is the name that the so called collectors and investors go looking out for for purchase. Performance art is an art that is not really bought or sold although photographic images and video works of the same can be. It is often a way of the artist to test new ideas and new audiences and sometimes to break away from static art, the traditional format as in A still from the performance

painting and sculpture. Thus it is a tool rather than a medium like canvas or materials on which art is expressed and executed. Could static art have a performative aspect? The unsettling, shape-shifting world of performance in visual arts questions the conservatism of art. While Chris Burden and Yves Klein have been the major practitioners of this form, it was the exemplary artist Robert Rauschenberg who summed it up so appropriately as ‘art that refuses to settle’! From India, Nikhil Chopra has been one of the few world renowned performance artists. Among mid career contemporary artists, Samudra Kajal Saikia is a columnist, practitioner of interdisciplinary art practices (including performance,

Between Amnesia and Insomnia is a site specific multi-lingual collaborative performance developed by Samudra Kajal Saikia and associates, the Kankhowa. Expressed and performed at a recent event at Art Centrix Space, it is based on two poems originally written in the Assamese language. The first poem “Silt” is a sonnet with Petrarchan rhyme pattern dealing with memory, existence and the embodiment of the performative being. The second poem, “In Hypnagogia” is about hallucinating memories

in a stage between sleep to awake, or vice-versa. The text celebrates the randomness of memory that constructs the existence of being. Memories of childhood, desire of love, cultural identity, politics all comes upon a single plane. Whether the intention was made clear through the work or was really upto the audience to debate on. Another young Delhi-based artist Supriyo Karmakar talks animatedly about creating new interactions between the viewer and the space, using his own body/self as the means of communication of ubiquitous ideologies while interpreting them in a personal way. I hope this article has raised more questions than answers. Debate, query and wonder are simply a part of the process of the understanding of art.

VICTORIAN FLAMBOYANCE Nicole and Tom Salvesen’s London home reeks of looks from the bygone victorian era. A sneak-peek inside the home Impressions: Benoy Sebastian

I

It was in the year 2013 that wellknown interior designers Nicole Salvesen and Mary Graham founded Salvesen Graham, and set shop in London. The designers work on private homes in town and the countryside in the UK and abroad. They believe in bringing a fresh interpretation to traditional and classical interiors and therefore have developed a style that layers colour, texture and pattern to a fantastic effect. This is the style that can be seen throughout

Nicole’s own Victorian styled terrace home. In 2016, with a baby on the way, Nicole and her husband felt a need to refurbish their home to accommodate a growing family and regular visiting family and friends. The work when completed, transformed the home, increasing the feeling of space with bright colours and more streamlined rooms. As you enter the house, you’ll notice that the sitting room features a mixture of complementary greens and blues and an array of patterned and vibrant fabrics. The fireplace is surrounded by fitted shelves filled with books that Nicole has

chosen to colour coordinate. This is a method she says, “that helps to bring a sense of calm to the space.” A little away from this cosy room is the open-plan kitchen where the couple have created an open space for entertaining the extended family and friends. Also, what cannot be ignored is that in the sitting area, more fitted joinery including drawers provide a space for Nicole’s cookery books and her vast collection of glassware - the highlight, it’s completely hidden away from the children’s toy area.

The four bedrooms on the first and the second floor don’t disappoint, and follow the same rules as the ground floor with plenty of storage. Typical touches of a Salvesen Graham interior can also be seen, colour, pattern and a feeling of a very comfortable and liveable interior. Nicole says, “This house in the past felt cramped, devoid of breathing space, is now full of interest and life; with a place for everything, and most importantly the renewed space has given the family a home that they always yearned for.” The Ideal Home and Garden March 2019 |

NORDIC DEN This Scandanavian-influenced house designed by architect Ekta Khanna is filled with light, contemporary touches and strong accents Impressions: Shruti Jain

Ekta Khanna, Architect

ituated on the 23rd floor of a high-rise star in Delhi is a 2,800 sqft, four bedroom apartment of a young couple and their family. Designed by architect Ekta Khanna, the apartment is well furnished, refined with luxurious interiors with a bit of a Scandinavian feel. Beside these touches, we loved the Indian-ness in the apartment, which gives it a unique character. es the place is warm and cosy, and the USP of the house is it’s location that provides ample amount of natural light in every room giving it an aura of being airy as well. Mostly the whole house has a very monochromatic tone; you don’t see a lot of dark vibrant colours. Muted grey is the basic colour that runs all around the house. The living-dining, which is a one large space takes the spotlight in the apartment. The walls are in the shade of warm-muted grey and there’s a bold black and white wallpaper, which creates a dynamic and interesting background to the grey-linen draped sofa, which forms a part of the formal seating. This grey-black-white look is offset by a dark tan day-bed completing this formal seating. There is also an informal seating area in the living room, which has two dusty green velvet chairs and a random shelving at the back. Ekta explained, “A slightly informal setting was specifically asked by the client as they wanted to have a space where they could sit every morning and have a cup of tea. They really liked the idea of having a cozy corner for just the two of them.” The random shelving at the back is where they keep all the memorabilia from their travels, momentos, books, etc. The dining room, which according to her, was a bit of a challenge as it is a thorough affair-having almost five to six doors opening onto it. To overcome this the dining area is defined by a drop wood

The door frames are in a dark-almost-black colour while the shutters are in walnut-teak kind linear, which works throughout the house. Moving to the master bedroom, again the focal point is the pastel wallpaper with a hexagonal pattern. There’s a narrow passage where the vanity is situated. It’s shallow, but practical, and doesn’t clutter the space. A blush pink armchair and a carpet with the tones of pink give the room almost a feminine vibe but the balance has been created by using black in other elements. Bindass Begum Rocking Raja, Mumbai, India Bindaas Begum Rockin’ Raja is a boutique restaurant that provides rarest, nostalgic and vintage - century old cuisine, with contemporary tweak and treatment. It’s all about Mughal Rajas and traditions along with some of the most authentic cuisines that were served to the Kings. You will see a lot of intricate and eloquent artefacts across every wall - mirror work to a gramophone, a wall of fame of various kings, hand-paintings of Begum and Raja, the swords, beautiful and intricate chandeliers, and a beautiful seating arrangement. All the food items on the menu at BBRR are recipes from royal households of our country. The effort to curate the menu on board and turning all of it into reality took about four and a half years in research and collating the lost recipes which India was known for. 122 | March 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

Elan Cafe, London, UK Serving breakfasts, brunches, lunches, cake and coffee in a pink-hued paradise, this place in The City of London is deliciously extra. There’s a real global, digital buzz about the place, yet it’s still confined within a very small and intimate setting. It is a very popular joint for the fashionistasbloggers-selfie-takers-and-candlestick-makers due to its candy floss, fairytale pink-everythinginteriors. The attention to detail from the marble top bistro tables and vintage pink seating is a visual feast. However, the main deal is the ceiling to floor floral displays. Not just the interiors but they pay extra attention to what they serve as well. Elan take pride over their coffees, and not just in taste but also in their passion to source from ethical and sustainble businesses too.

Nanan Patisserie, Wroclaw, Poland Nanan means sweetmeats in French and sweets play the leading role in this signature design of a modern patisserie. The deliberately minimalist interior provides a subtle setting for the protagonists: finely decorated sophisticates cakes and éclairs. The speciality of this patisserie, the éclair, has inspired the interior design and the visual identity of Nanan. The cake’s oval shape is echoed in the central island counter with display that operates almost like a glass cabinet in a jeweller’s shop. It has also inspired the bespoke design of lamps and other details of the interior such as mirrors, door handles, coat hangers and veneer perforation. An éclair motif has naturally lent itself to the patisserie’s visual identification. The whole place is given a context of soft, velvet, pink walls with arched doorways. Combined with delicate shining brass details it builds a dreamy ambience.
