2016: The year the world stopped caring about refugees
Refugees, rights groups, aid organisations say empathy towards refugees is fading even as deaths in Mediterranean soar. byAnealla Safdar and Patrick Strickland The number of refugees who drowned in the Mediterranean this year rose to an annual record. More than 5,000 people lost their lives at sea as they took on perilous journeys to escape war, poverty, and persecution - often all three. In 2015, some 3,771 refugees died while crossing the Mediterranean, up from 3,279 deaths the year before.
In short, 2016 has not been an easy year. A toddler was the first refugee to die in the Mediterranean in the deadliest January on record. In March the Balkan route was permanently shut, trapping tens
of thousands of asylum seekers in Greece and slowing Aegean Sea crossings to a trickle. In May Kenya declared it would close Dadaab, the world's largest refugee camp. In June Britain voted to leave the European Union, thanks in large measure to a campaign run by the anti-immigration United Kingdom Independence Party which stoked fears over incoming refugees. In August, a leak revealed that refugee children were being sexually assaulted at Australia's Nauru prison camp. Deportations of Afghan refugees from Pakistan swelled this year, with 100,000 repatriated in September alone. In October the EU cleared a deal to deport an unlimited number of Afghan refugees from Europe, and in November the United States voted for Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate who consistently berated refugees during his campaign.

Ordinary people organising outside current failed structures to rescue, support and defend refugees. 3 Exporting control. Rich countries demanding poor countries obstruct and accommodate refugees. 4 Monetisation. Corrupt regimes such as Afghanistan and Niger taking Western money and charging more bribes for border crossers. 5 Circular refugees. Research suggests three out four of Afghans sent “home” make their way back to Europe. “The missing piece? Serious conversation about these three failed tactics.”
However, the refugee crisis is now often spoken of in terms of economics and security - especially during election season - as opposed to empathy. Al Jazeera asked refugees, human rights organisations, experts working with refugees, and those who attempt to make dangerous passages a little safer, what the year 2016 meant for refugees around the world and what they should expect from 2017.

“The world got bored with refugees in 2016. Politicians wanted to stop refugees coming. Islamophobia and the problems that happened ‘because’ of the refugees - fascists used these things in a bad way. The situation got worse. There are still people on the left who fight till the end, because they believe in ‘no borders’, and solidarity. “Detaining people in Greece or Italy is a first step to stop refugees from coming. Europe has said it doesn’t want any more Muslims or refugees, but a lot of people need protection because people are living in bad conditions in Syria or Iraq. In Syria, you have two bad options - a [...] dictator or Islamists. When you see your kids’ bodies shaking while they sleep because they are dreaming of death or violence - it’s not normal. “If I could say something to everyone, it would be: Stop killing people. Stop violence.” “Unfortunately, the situation for refugees may get worse before it gets better, depending on the results of some upcoming elections. As external powers wage proxy wars in countries such as Yemen, Syria and Iraq, terrorist acts also will continue to occur on their soil, and asylum seekers and immigrants will be blamed. It is the responsibility of those of us who work with refugees to do a much better job of giving visibility to the significant contribution made by these individuals historically and today.”

Historic First: U.S. State Launches Lawsuit Against Monsanto Over PCBs For the first time ever, a U.S. state is suing the agribusiness giant Monsanto over the toxic after-effects of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a dangerous chemical once commonly found in building supplies and industrial equipment. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson, announced the lawsuit last week. The Associated Press reported on Dec. 9 that they hope to win “hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars” from Monsanto. “It is time to hold the sole U.S. manufacturer of PCBs accountable for the significant harm they have caused to our state,” Ferguson said during a Dec. 8 press conference in Seattle. Although PCBs were banned in the late 1970s, the chemicals are still present in many homes and public buildings, including schools, and have polluted water throughout the country. PCBs are considered a probable carcinogen and have been linked to developmental difficulties in children and animals, among other serious adverse health effects.
In 1935, Monsanto bought Swann Chemical Company, one of the primary original manufacturers of PCBs, and in the decades until the chemicals were banned, Monsanto was responsible for the creation of most of the PCBs in the country. “Monsanto produced PCBs for decades while hiding what they knew about the toxic chemicals’ harm to human health and the environment,” Ferguson noted during the press conference. There is proof that Monsanto knew about and deliberately covered up the dangers posed by PCBs. The AP reported: “In 1937, an internal memo said testing on animals showed ‘systemic toxic effects’ from prolonged exposure by inhaling PCB fumes or ingestion. In 1969, a company committee on PCBs noted, ‘There is too much customer/market need and selfishly too much Monsanto profit to go out.’” In a statement provided to the wire service, a Monsanto spokesperson called the state’s lawsuit “experimental because it seeks to target a product manufacturer

Historic First: U.S. State Launches Lawsuit Against Monsanto Over PCBs for selling a lawful and useful chemical four to eight decades ago that was applied by the U.S. government, Washington State, local cities, and industries into many products to make them safer.” The Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies have been hesitant to crack down on Monsanto’s role in the manufacture of PCBs. However, the EPA and Monsanto have also maintained a close relationship, leading to accusations of institutional bias. David DesRoches, explained the close ties in the June 11 episode of Reveal, a podcast produced by The Center for Investigative Reporting: “There’s a history of people moving back and forth between the EPA and various industries, and when the PCB problem first surfaced, the person who managed the whole school PCB problem for the EPA was a former consultant for a major chemical lobbying group, and the number 2 person at the EPA at the time was a former executive with Monsanto, who later went on to
DuPont.” In recent years, activists and local governments have attempted to force courts to step in where the federal government has been unwilling or unable to hold Monsanto accountable for its environmental crimes. Judges have sided with Monsanto in multiple lawsuits brought by individuals and city governments, and on Tuesday, Monsanto shareholders agreed to a $57 billion buyout offer by Germany’s Bayer. If approved, the pair would merge into a multinational chemical and agricultural corporation of unprecedented size and influence. Still, it’s possible the combined legal might of an entire state may be able to bring the company to justice for the decades in which its toxic chemicals have built up in the systems of plants, people, and water systems. Πατήρ Ηλία Βίλλης. O "Χερουβικός ύμνος για τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής Δημήτριο» ξεκίνησε το παγκόσμιο ταξίδι του και ακούστηκε από τοπικές χορωδίες στην Ελλάδα, Βουλγαρία, Ρουμανία και Ουκρανία. “ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ 2016” Στην καρδιά της απόσταξης
η Πιερία
Λίγο μετά τα μέσα Νοέμβριου και τα καζάνια των διημέρων αμβυκούχων της Πιερίας, όπως λέγονται τα παραδοσιακά αποστακτήρα, πήραν φωτιά. Η γλυκιά μυρωδιά της απόσταξης, σε συνδυασμό με το καμένο ξύλο, αναδύεται γύρω από τους αποστακτήρες και πλημμυρίζει αυτές τις μέρες τα χωριά της Πιερίας. Τα τσίπουρα σιγοβράζουν για να βγει σταγόνα - σταγόνα το γλυκόπιοτο τσίπουρο της Πιερίας. Στα εκατό (100) περίπου αναμμένα καζάνια της Πιερίας, στα οποία τηρούνται αυστηρά όλοι οι θεσπισμένοι κανόνες, παραγωγοί, συγγενείς, φίλοι και επισκέπτες απολαμβάνουν για μία ακόμα χρόνια τη διαδικασία παρασκευής του τσίπουρου. Μυστικά και αρώματα κυριαρχούν σε κάθε καζάνι, η απόσταξη του τσίπουρου αποτελεί ιεροτελεστία, είναι μια διαδικασία που έχει παραμένει αναλλοίωτη μέσα στον χρόνο, συνδυάζεται σχεδόν πάντα με νυχτέρια (Δύο εικοσιτετράωρα είναι αυτά) και καλή παρέα με γλέντι και παραδοσιακούς μεζέδες.
Στην Πιερία έχουν γίνει τεράστια βήματα στην ποιοτική εξέλιξη του τσίπουρου, στην ανάπτυξη «αποστακτικής» κουλτούρας και στην άνθιση της γαστρονομίας του τσίπουρου. Η τοπική γαστρονομία έχει την τιμητική της σε κάθε ρακοκάζανο. Δεν υπάρχει ρακοκάζανο που μα μη διαθέτει τη δική του τραπεζαρία, όπου το τραπέζι μπορεί να είναι και αυτοσχέδιο. Στο τραπέζι που στρώνεται, βρίσκονται συνήθως παραδοσιακές πίτες, ψητά τοπικά, κρέατα παϊδάκια, μπριζόλες και λουκάνικα, καυτερές πιπεριές και τουρσί, τυρί, ελιές, κρασί και τσίπουρο της περασμένης χρονιάς αλλά και γλυκά. Πολλά όμως τα μυστικά για την παραγωγή εύγευστου τσίπουρου και οι διηγήσεις και η φανέρωση των "μυστικών" αυτών γύρω από το καζάνι όπου γίνεται η απόσταξη, δεν έχουν τελειωμό. Το σημαντικό όμως είναι οι ιδιαίτερες σχέσεις των ανθρώπων που αναπτύσσονται κατά την απόσταξη αλλά και όταν καταναλώνεται. καθοριστικό για την καλή του γεύση και ποιότητα. Αυτοί που γνωρίζουν από καλό τσίπουρο προτιμούν αυτό που παίρνουμε από την καρδιά της απόσταξης ενώ οι κεφαλές (ακεταλδεύδη και μεθανόλη) και οι ουρές της απόσταξης (ανώτερες αλκοόλες, εστέρες, λιπαρά οξέα κλπ) απομακρύνονται ή τις κρατάμε για εντριβές. Έτσι παίρνουμε ένα εξαιρετικό απόσταγμα που έχει κατακτήσει τις "καρδιές" των κατοίκων και των επισκεπτών της Πιερίας. Το τσίπουρο, αυτό το λαϊκό ποτό, με τον δικό του τρόπο βάζει τη δική του υπογραφή στη γαστρονομική "ταυτότητα" της περιοχής αναδεικνύοντας τους μεζέδες που το ακολουθούν σε
αληθινά γκουρμέ πιάτα. Αν σας δοθεί η ευκαιρία, επισκεφτείτε ένα ρακοκάζανο. Να είστε σίγουροι ότι είστε καλεσμένοι -και ας μη σας το είπαν- και ζήστε τη μοναδική εμπειρία της απόσταξης μέσω ενός απολαυστικού τσιπουροταξιδιού γεύσεων και αρωμάτων και, όπως λένε και οι σοφότεροι, «ο καλύτερος μεζές για το τσίπουρο είναι ο καλός ο λόγος». SAY YES TO ULTRA HD 4K TELEVISIONS? By Shelly Palmer Ultra HD (aka 4K) televisions have been widely available (at reasonable prices) for only a couple of years. The sets have four times the pixels of good old-fashioned HDTVs (aka 2K) and come in practical sizes up to 7′ diagonal. That’s all great, but with the advent of 4K HDR (high dynamic range), about 10 million firstgeneration 4K sets may experience an extinction-level event. So, should you buy one? Like its Ultra HD predecessor, 4K HDR (aka Ultra HD Premium) has 3840×2160 pixels. But collectively packaged under the HDR specification, 4K HDR sets feature several enhancements for your viewing pleasure, including whiter whites, blacker blacks, and a zillion more colors (that’s a technical term). What Exactly Is 4K HDR? It took the industry a while to reach consensus. In 2014, the Ultra HD Alliance (UHD-A) was formed to
establish voluntary minimum 4K performance criteria. There were lively discussions about exactly what the “H” in HDR stood for, what the “W” in WCG (wide color gamut) stood for – that’s the “zillion more colors” I referenced above – and how to set the minimum requirements for a 4K HDR set to sport the “Ultra HD Premium” logo.
Are There Really Two Competing HDR Standards?
Of course there are two competing approaches to HDR. In one corner, there’s Dolby Vision, which, according to Jonathan Abrams, CEV at Nutmeg Creative, is a proprietary system (not a standard). In the other corner, there’s HDR10 (an open standard, easier to update and more widely used); nearly every manufacturer (except Vizio which supports Dolby Vision)

supports HDR10. Remember the Extinction-Level Event I Alluded To? Unfortunately, first-generation 4K sets don’t support HDR10, which means there are about 10 million 4K TVs that will become somewhat obsolete when everyone is streaming HDR10 content. Not surprisingly, Amazon is an early adopter of HDR10.
Do I Really Need a 4K HDR Ultra HD Premium TV?
It doesn’t matter if you think you need a 4K HDR set or not. Soon, you won’t have a choice; it’s all anyone is going to manufacture. Until then, here are some general rules to buy by. If you are purchasing a flat screen, less than 60″ diagonal, you can get a high-quality 2K (regular old HDTV) set and be very, very happy. The main reason to have lots of pixels is to increase resolution for bigger screens. Once your screen gets over 65″, you will really see a difference between 2K and 4K. If affordable, 4K HDR is the way to go. Would I choose a 2K HDR monitor (Yes, there’s 2K HDR, and it looks amazing!) over a regular 4K monitor? Under 60″, absolutely! At 75″, I would struggle with the decision but probably still opt for 2K HDR over regular 4K. 2K sets over 75″ (if you can even find one) is a bad idea – you will see the pixels at normal viewing distances. While Netflix and some cable companies offer 4K and HDR content, you may not have enough bandwidth available. To stream Netflix content in 4K, you’ll need a minimum of 15 Mbps; for shows and movies in HDR,
you’ll need even more bandwidth (closer to 20 Mbps). Even with the best compression, 4K files are still twice as large as HD files, so bandwidth may become an issue. Sadly, Comcast’s existing X1 boxes don’t support HDR, and curiously, the Xi5 boxes support HDR but not UHD (and even that’s just in a small test group). TiVo’s Bolt and Series 6 DVRs have the right hardware, but not the necessary firmware to support HDR; TiVo is still evaluating the two competing HDR formats.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray … Really?
There’s no way to get around this: in the world of 4K, the best picture quality is on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. These discs (with far more capacity than standard Bluray discs) include metadata that tells your TV how to properly interpret color and brightness. I’m not advocating for the format, but this is a great cocktail party factoid.
They’re Selling Like Hotcakes
According to the CTA™, 2016 was a flagship year for 4K TVs, thanks in large part to the rollout of HDR. 4K shipments were estimated at 15 million units (+105% YoY) with a revenue exceeding $12.9 billion (+69% YoY).
