I’m Bartholomew J. Buffalo but you can call me Barry. I’m here today to answer 15 facts about me and my friends, the Great American Bison.

How big is a bison? Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall! Females bison weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet and a bison calf weighs 30–70 pounds at birth.

Who takes care of bison?

Public lands managed by The Department of the Interior support 17 bison herds—or approximately 10,000 bison—in 12 states.

What’s the difference between bison and buffalo?

While bison and buffalo are used interchangeably, in North America the scientific name is bison. Historians believe that the term “buffalo” grew from the French word for beef, “boeuf.”

Where do bison live?

Yellowstone National Park is the only place in the U.S. where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times.

What makes Yellowstone’s bison so special?

They’re the pure descendants (free of cattle genes) of early bison that roamed our country’s grasslands.

What’s a “red dog”?

It’s a baby bison. Bison calves tend to be born from late March through May and are red-orange in color, earning them the nickname “red dogs.”

How do you know if a bison is happy or angry?

You can judge a bison’s mood by its tail. When it hangs down and switches naturally, the bison is usually calm. If the tail is standing straight up, watch out! It may be ready to charge.

Have bison ever been endangered?

Yes. Wind Cave National Park’s herd helped revive bison populations around the country. By 1913, the American Bison Society had enough bison to restore a free-ranging bison herd.

How fast is a bison? Bison may be big, but they’re also fast. They can run up to 35 miles per hour.

What do bison eat?

Pass the salad, please! Bison primarily eat grasses, weeds and leafy plants—typically foraging for 9–11 hours a day.

Did people hunt bison?

Yes, even a US President! Teddy Roosevelt hunted bison but later changed his mind and helped save bison from extinction.

How long do bison live?

Bison can live up to 20 years old. The average lifespan for a bison is 10–20 years, but some live to be older.

Why do bison roll on the ground?

A little dirt won’t hurt. Called wallowing, bison roll in the dirt to deter biting flies and help shed fur.

Where did bison come from? The American bison’s ancestors

can be traced to southern Asia thousands of years ago. Bison made their way to America by crossing the ancient land bridge that once connected Asia with North America.

Do bison use all five senses?

Bison are nearsighted—who knew? While bison have poor eyesight, they have excellent senses of smell and hearing. Cows and calves communicate using piglike grunts.

Thank you for taking time to learn with me! TimeForKidsPRINT.indd 7

Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in 1932. He began calling his company “Lego” in 1934, based upon the Danish phrase leg godt, which means “play well.” The Lego Group began making its famous plastic interlocking blocks in 1949. At first, they were not very popular, because customers still preferred wooden toys. When they just started, only 7 employees were working at LEGO; they were all enthusiastic carpenters who derived great pleasure from creating new things and cared about the quality of products. Ole Kirk Christiansen had a personal motto – “Der bedste er ikke for godt” or “Only the best is worthy”. Ole Kirk Christiansen’s Great Grandson is still on the board of Directors for the Lego company.

LEGO® toys have become so popular all over the world that they have expanded from just toys to include movies, games, competitions and even LEGO themed amusement parks! The LEGO® block design still in use today was patented on January 28, 1958. Blocks from that year are still compatible with blocks made today. The Lego Group takes great pride in manufacturing precise pieces that fit firmly together, yet can be easily taken apart. Over the last 50 years, the Lego Group has produced over 400 billion LEGO® blocks. That’s enough LEGO® blocks for every person in the world to have over 60 LEGO® blocks!
