Training a Dog to Accept Grooming By Elmhurst Animal Care Center

Training a Dog to Accept Grooming Experienced groomers not only make a dog or cat look better, but they also help maintain a pet’s health. In addition to detecting skin or coat conditions and parasites, groomers can perform anal gland expressions and nail trims to keep stress off their paws. Although these professionals seem able to handle any unruly pet, training your dog or cat to accept touch will make the grooming experience less stressful for everyone involved.

To accustom your pet to being handled, get in the habit of stroking every part of the animal’s body, especially sensitive areas like the ears, belly, and feet. It may help to start when the animal is getting ready to nap.

Training a Dog to Accept Grooming For nail trimming, try rubbing your hand up and down each leg and gently pressing the toes one by one. Give your pet plenty of praise and treats if they stay still and quiet. Then try “air” clipping by lifting a paw and pretending to clip the nail. With enough repetitions, your pet will get used to the handling and perhaps enjoy the attention. If your pet already fears nail clippings, break the training into smaller steps. Begin by holding one paw and touching each nail, with the nail clippers in clear view, giving them a few tasty treats. Once the dog or cat is relaxed, pick up the clippers while holding a paw with the other hand. Next, “air” clip one nail, offer a treat, and stop. Do not move on until the animal is completely comfortable with this action. Again, try this when your pet is calm so you get the least resistance.
