Biker Letters

By Hiroshi Naganuma

Hello, Bikers. I want to share a writing from the Country, which defines with a very real proximity, what I think a Motero must be:

After so much time, almost a year, we are back. We return full of surprises and new topics. Throughout this period, we have met with several solo bikers and clubs, we have met in multiple events, we saved many who were with the injured bike and we have compiled several anecdotes. Long have been the kilometers traveled, but we always return to the same point, to our motto: “We do not only live to ride, we live to respect, help and educate. Because we know that life are our roads and the other’s one“. We respect each actor on the road and we show that we can comply with the

rules. We help every brother who calls us for any reason. We educate through faceto-face and virtual courses, in meetings and talks in the heat of a red wine. This is just the beginning, it is the tip of the iceberg of what we are capable of, not only as human beings, but as professionals, as brothers of the same passion, as Moteros. For those who know us, we hope to meet again. For those who do not know us, the path and the passion that unites us will make everything possible to meet and exchange experiences.

When it rains, we get wet. When it’s cold, we shiver. When it’s hot, we roast. When it is windy, we end up bursting with so much compensation. At night, we see badly. When a road crosses an orange grove or meanders between mimosas, we perfume ourselves. When it passes through the vicinity of a chemical industry, we stink. If the road is dusty, we eat dust. If it is rocky, be careful, because sooner or later the Chinese will touch you. We hear very little, only the air buzzing on the eardrums. The engine is just a vibration-an appreciable vibration-between the thighs. The insects crash into our visors, gloves and jackets: woe to the unwise that leaves some skin to the wind, because that’s where they will give it more... It’s not that we bikers identify with the landscape, but we are landscape. The landscape gets wet, freezes and dries up. We also. It can not be seen at night. We do not either... It happens that we often feel like Peter Pan, we are reluctant to bury that adolescence, like a belly cat up. That is why we are deeply envied. “When you are driving, the time between the decision and the effect of that decision - and both depend on your body - is the shortest possible. You decide something and it happens, and at that moment you are very close to existential freedom. “ And finally I put the definition that the RAE gives biker: “passionate about the bike” Jorge Lizama Prado (Tiri)

Noti-Flash DUCATI MONSTER 1200 25° ANNIVERSARIO

Only 500 will be manufactured and numbered. In addition to its green, white and red, it will have a golden chassis and Marchesini wheels in alloy and gold finish. The fully adjustable suspension, both front and rear, is entrusted to the company Öhlins; Pirelli Diablo Rosso III wheels and Brembo Monobloc Evo M50 calipers. Of course you can not miss all the help: IMU, ABS, DWC, DTC, DQS, TFT, LED, USB and DLC are some of the three letter terms that appear in the specifications. Optionally you can add DMS (Ducati Multimedia System).

HEADWAVE

Headwave is a brand that builds speakers for helmets using the helmet as a sounding board. This means that your helmet turns itself into a speaker. No need for cables or extra devices or integrations. Everything is controlled through your cell phone. It connects via bluetooth. It is not a free hands, you can only listen through it: music, GPS instructions, notifications, among other things. It is the first Concert Capsule in the world, the first helmet-speaker for motorcycles. The best part of the case is that it is compatible with almost all helmets in the market.

BENELLI TRK 502 X

With the slogan “The adventure is in your hands”, Benelli launches a version of the wellknown TRK 502, with a more aggressive adventurous style. Designed for bikers who want to travel without worrying about barriers. Their differences are obvious. Lightning wheels 19 forward and 17 rear, the rear suspension travel is greater, front floating brake calipers, 320 mm discs, a new higher exhaust and a rear grill. If your sister has surprised us with a small adventurous flavor in its simplicity, surely the TRK 502 X will surprise us more.

ARAI RX-7V RC

The Japanese brand Arai is known for making its models by hand, which gives them their own exclusivity. And the model at the top of its range is the Arai RX-7V RC, a special version of its RX-7V model, the same used by many MotoGP riders. The RX-7V RC is entirely made of carbon fiber and no more than 300 are produced per year, since its manufacture involves the full day of a master at the Arai plant. Technical characteristics: outer structure with multiple layers of carbon fiber; screen with closing system derived from the F1 and with anti-fog sheet Pinlock included; emergency extraction system.

BOSCH, DUCATI Y KTM 2020

The German manufacturer Bosch has developed a new safety package for motorcycles that includes adaptive cruise control, the frontal collision warning and the blind spot detection. Motorcycle manufacturers KTM and Ducati will include in their production models from 2020 these new systems based on autonomous driving technologies, Bosch said in a statement. “The motorcycle of the future must be able to see and feel”, said the head of the business unit ‘Two-Wheeler and Powersports’ (two wheels and sports) of Bosch, Geoff Liersch, in the note.

KNEEPADS MOBIUS X8

These knee pads are developed by doctors and the motocross icon Ryan Villopoto. They offer good adjustment possibilities and good support and protection for the knees. They are very comfortable thanks to the EVA moldable foam and its adjustment capacity. The buckles are very easy to use and are strategically placed so that they always stay in the right place. Mobius X8 is simply the best option for those who demand the best, and the best option for those who have a knee injury.

My bike By Lorena Giraldo

and his Avenger 220, La Yiya, with all rebellion

Two and a half years ago I own an Avenger 220, La Yiya. It all started one day that my boyfriend (Daniel) and I felt drowned in public transport, the birth of the SITP and all the mishaps that he brought; the main motivation that led us to hit bottom. The Yiya was the product of dreams, savings, work and much effort. When we decided to buy it, Daniel, fortunately, had suffered a fracture, so I had to go to myself. Since I was young I was a silent lover of motorcycles, since my mother has been a motorcyclist for more than 20 years, but I always considered them insecure. My father told us that it was like carrying the coffin on his back, since when we walk in them, even with the respective protections, we are more prone to suffer a serious injury. The day of buying a motorcycle had arrived, more than nerves, I felt immense happiness, because practically one of my dreams was about to be fulfilled. I had taken a course in an academy in Venice, I had my license up to date and all that was missing was... 6

When you go to the market of motorcycles, they offer you a number of mamacitas, that if it were not because there are no resources, they want to take them all hehehe, so instead of dreaming about a super Ninja hehehe, I had to go out and find some will fit the budget; AKT NKD 125 was the first option, a brand that some do not recommend, among those many, my mom almost died when she saw me quoting one of them hahaha, so we decided to go and find “a real brand. I was in Suzuki, where I met the GZ 150, I went up once more in a GN 125, I went through Honda to know the Invicta, but when I got to Auteco, it was almost love at first sight. There was a bright black Avenger in the center of the warehouse that made any lover of choper motorcycles fall in love. I had what I had liked all my life, a desirable height, an impressive comfort and, best of all, as I have always said, style... And indeed the Avenger 220 obeys its slogan, it’s a matter of style, you imagine like a Lorenzo Lamas, in a super Harley Davidson...

Nobody supported me to buy it, only Daniel, who also felt in love when he saw her in those little pieces of cardboard that they give you when you are quoting. So in the face of any forecast, she was chosen, three days later, she was paying and doing the respective papers... I remember the day we went for it, they showed us how it was used, they gave us the keys and we had everything ready. When we went to start, everything changed, everything went from happiness to nerves, despair, fear and even a bad temper... I learned on a small motorcycle and drive this big, heavy motorcycle and, to complete it, with a companion, it was a Calvary for me The first days I did not want to use it, I kept it in the garage, I started hating it, I saw it as an insert, I preferred to suffer on the side of the bus. But this could not go on like this for a long time, the pocket could not stand it and neither could I.

I decided to face the fear and started practicing with her. Little by little I began to have more confidence and I learned to control it. It helped me to have found Bajaj Avenger Club Bogotá on Facebook. Belonging to the club has been a very nice experience because I grew up with her. One of its members, Andrés Amaya de Rodando Seguro, teaches a course on safe handling techniques. It is definitely something that has to be done because you think that because you went to an academy you know all of them, but there really is a lot to learn. Today I feel that I am not an excellent driver, but thanks to what I have learned I know that it is necessary to use personal security elements; I have seen accidents through the nets, where the pilot and the co-pilot are saved because they wear their knee pads, their elbow pads, a good helmet, a good jacket and I also have all those elements. I learned that zigzagging is not good, that going in the middle of the cars can lead to very strong accidents. There are impressive images that circulate through the networks that one says, my God, why he did that, and that led me to have a little more awareness.

8

Accidents I had one, falls... too many. But the desire to continue driving, to get up and enjoy the road... are impressive. It is a very comfortable motorcycle, it is a motorcycle that... one does not regret having bought it. I always waited, from the beginning, with a recognized brand... Yamaha, Suzuki, the already recognized brands that one knows that those engines are unbreakable. But, to go out and buy a Bajaj, I did not know much about them. The only thing I realized was that everyone had a Pulsar and that even the guards had Pulsar. But to have it and enjoy it as it should be, is when you realize that this bike is for life. Thanks to her I have attended supergenial events, which I never thought I would attend. I never thought I was surrounded by so many bikes in my life. I know of people who have traveled with her Latin America. Not me, but I would like to do it one day and we already know that he can stand it. She takes you and brings you and is a motorbike for life. The Yiya has never bothered me about anything. She has never asked me for a spare over there strange. Nothing has ever happened to the engine, it has never opened. It is two and

a half years that I am with her, and more than 20,000 kilometers and she has answered me excellently. My average speed is between 80 and sometimes 100, but when you can not, there’s no problem, I’m slow. It makes me have very good final speed, for the design; because the weight, how it is distributed and those things, I do not make it a racing bike. I do not make it a motorcycle to run, but she runs, despite its shape and everything. I never plan to sell it, it’s not for sale, I’ll never do it. He will accompany me until I’m old, I said.

The handlebar of a motorcycle is a tubular component that is part of the maneuver mechanism. It has a space to mount the controls like the brake, the accelerator, the clutch, the horn, the switches of lights and the mirrors; sometimes it also supports the weight of the pilot.

Types of Handlebars

The handlebar, A personal style

non-adjustable tree clamp.

Handlebars come in a variety of types and designs for a particular handling style:

••Clubman bars: common in cafe-racer. Attach to the triple tree and tilt down to give you a more aggressive driving position.

••Motocross bars: motocross and off-road bikes have a tubular handle with a cross clamp to resist torsional rotation. This type of handle can also be found in dual-sport, streetfighter and supermoto.

••Beach bars: commonly used in cruisers, they have a sloping shape towards the pilot to allow more relaxed driving. ••Cruiser handlebars: long and bent towards the pilot, so that it has a vertical position of handling. ••Clip-ons: popular on sports bikes, in which two separate short handles attach directly to the fork tubes. These can be installed above or below the triple tree and are easily adjustable. These two piece clip bars can also be attached to the triple top and 10

••Drag bars: almost in a straight line to provide a more aerodynamic driving position.

••Z-bar: any strongly angled handlebar with long or short straight sections, which are tilted sharply upwards from the mounting point and again at an acute angle to the handle and command area

Sizes There are several standard parameters of size and diameter that describe most of the handlebars of motorcycles.

Construction The handlebars are made of round-section metal tubes, typically alloys of aluminum or chromed steel, but also of carbon fiber and

VESPA NEW

The width from one handle to another can vary from 30.5 to 37 inches (770 to 940 mm). The handles can be raised above the triple clamp to 24 inches (610 mm) or more, called Ape-hangers when they are too high, or they can fall a few inches below, called Clubman bar.

••Buckhorn handlebars: similar to Ape-hangers, but shorter and curved. They are also known as “mini-apes”.

MOTO SERVices

The section where the handle is installed, behind its mounting location, may vary from 4.25 to 17 inches (108 to 432 mm). The diameters commonly vary from 7/8, 1 and 1 1/4 inches (22, 25 and 32 mm), although the oversized bars of 1 1/4, 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 inches (32, 38 and 44 mm) can be reduced to 1 inch (25 mm) on the handles so that standard controls can be mounted.

Design: El Motero S.A.S.

••Ape-hangers: they are mainly found in choppers, these are handlebars of exaggerated height. The pilot has to reach them by raising their arms, hence the name. Equipped for the appearance of appearance instead of comfort or safety, they can cause numbness in the hands, but the use of chokes or cruise controls can help alleviate these symptoms. In some countries they restrict the maximum height of Ape-hangers for safety reasons.

titanium, shaped to the desired contour. Holes can be drilled for internal routing of control cables such as brake, accelerator and clutch. The lifts hold the handlebar above its mounting position on the upper triple shaft or on the upper part of the fork and can be integrated into the bar itself or separate the elements. Each end of the handlebar can contain weights of the end of the bar to dampen the vibration, isolating the resonant frequency of the bar of the motor. The heated handlebars can be installed to provide warmth for the pilot in cold environments.

Remember to perform driving tests every time you change the handlebar or weights settings. It is important to know that these changes not only alter the driving position, but also the behavior of the motorcycle when cornering.

Traffic lights:

learn to read them

The traffic lights are one of the most vulnerable points for us Bikers. Braking, accelerating and when to do it is vital. According to the National Traffic Code, in Article 2 (Definitions) the traffic light is “Electromagnetic or electronic device to regulate the transit of vehicles and / or pedestrians through the use of light signals”. According to article 117 we can find several types of traffic lights: ••For vehicle control ••For pedestrians ••Specials ••Approach to mass transit crossings, trains and storage ••Directional, intermittent and others To delve a little deeper into the meaning of these lights, let’s look at what article 118 says, because sometimes we believe they mean one thing, when they really are something else: ••Red: indicates the duty to stop, without stepping on or invading the initial line of the crosswalk. If this is not indicated, it will be understood extended to two meters away from the traffic light. The right turn is allowed, respecting the priority of the pedestrian. The prohibition of this turn will be indicated with special signage. The transit authorities, in your jurisdiction, may authorize it.

••Yellow: Indicates attention for a change of lights or signals and for the crossing to be evicted by vehicles that are in it or refrain from entering the crossing, even having space to do so. Do not start the march in yellow light, or increase the speed during the lapse. Do not enter yellow at the intersection and if a vehicle is already in the intersection in yellow light will maintain the priority until the crossing. ••Green: means free to go.

Why treat this topic? The truth is I’m tired of seeing so many brothers who start as if they were in a race when the light turns yellow and they are taken by a car, truck or bus that skips the red light, instead of waiting for the light to turn on green and start gently watching that nobody comes on the road. Similar is the case of walking and suddenly find the yellow light and accelerate with the intention of crossing before it turns red. We have to be careful, the streets are not race tracks and, if they want to compare it, even

Infraction: D04 Charge: 30 SMDLV ($737.700) and immobilization Do not stop at a red or yellow traffic light, a “STOP” sign or an intermittent red light. In the case of motorcycles will be 12

in the races they know that they must start in green light, not yellow and much less red. As the slogan says, “respect and you will be respected”. By quoting this I refer to not only respect the lights of the traffic light, but the behavior we have in the area. Many for the eagerness to arrive fast, they go between the cars and they put themselves in the minimum space until arriving ahead. They pass by the cars and skim the bikes. In many of the cases, they wait for the traffic light to put on the yellow light in an improper position, which is stepping on the zebra crossing (a topic we will discuss on another occasion). “Always remember that someone is waiting for you at home.” This is not a nice phrase that was returned to sticker on the bike and ready. Every time you leave the house, remember who you live with; your mom, your dad, your brothers, your sisters, your grandparents, your partner and / or your children. That decal is for you to read it every time you go out and remember that you are not alone or alone. Every decision you make on the bike means being able to see them again, or not. Think about it before you do things and do things correctly.

immobilized until the value of the fine is paid or the competent authority decides on its imposition in the terms of articles 135 and 136 of the National Traffic Code.

Safety and Health By Carla Sánchez

The helmet, the cheap is expensive.

When buying a helmet, the first thing we look at is the design, the colors, whether or not it combines with the bike. We also test it to see how it feels and then we look at its price. This last point is the one that normally decides our purchase... How much does it cost and why so expensive?

We rarely look for certifications on a helmet and, really, this should be the first thing we should look for and the main argument to decide whether to buy it or not. Now, for those who “read” the helmets, we find some terms that we have no idea what they mean, but we know it’s cool to be in the helmet... DOT, SNELL, ECE and, for Colombia, NTC. The DOT refers to the United States Department of Transportation (Departament of Transportation). This certificate is necessary for its use in the United States to be legal, but it is the most basic level certificate. That Department tests for: ••Energy management in impact ••Penetration ••Retention At its most fundamental level, helmets are energy management equipment at the time of impact, are designed to retain energy and prevent it from being transferred to the head. But yes, as you may guess, some helmets do this job better than others. DOT tests require that helmets withstand the impact of an amount of energy, prevent objects from penetrating at a certain speed and remain in 14

Photos: Taken in Motorrad Center

place over the head at all times. DOT covers the basics of a helmet, but there are still many things to try. Here comes the SNELL certificate. The Snell Memorial Foundation is a private non-profit organization that also tests helmets. They do many similar tests, but with higher standards. It also tests the protection of the chin and helmet visor. Due to these tests, the helmet must be integral to be approved; A classic open helmet would not pass these tests, for lack of protection on the chin. Another differential point is that the DOT certificate is mandatory in the United States, but the SNELL is optional. The foundation carries out product tests to confirm if they pass or not. Now, ECE is the European version of DOT. This certificate is based on the performance of many similar impact and retention tests, including others such as abrasion resistance. But, as the speed limits are a bit lower in Europe (of course we will not include the famous Autobahn, among others), the tests are implemented according to the place. It is not the same to perform tests with impacts at 40 km / h than at 100 km / h or 200 km / h. Finally, we have the NTC certificate in Colombia. This does not differ much from the DOT

or the ECE, but one thing that is appreciated is to put an end to the famous “shell helmet”. In the NTC points are made as the materials for its manufacture and technical specifications of the visibility that the helmet user must have. Now, what certificate is important for my helmet? This is the one million question. The most important thing is that you have a certificate. Although the NTC and the ECE are very new, this does not mean they are the worst. DOT is mandatory in the United States. Probably the SNELL is the best option, but they have to be integral helmets.

A tip before buying the first helmet you see: look at the brand well. What each brand offers for your safety and what certificates you have obtained with the helmet you are going to buy. Always buy in a store that gives you confidence. Many times cheap is expensive and, for this case, you do not have to be stingy, we are talking about the safety of your head.

The beginning of the MC

fought together life and death in recent years.

Back in the year 45 and after the Second World War the American soldiers returned home with the taste of blood and the smell of death. They returned to their assets with life or death missions on top of a Harley Davidson or an Indian. There were those who had fixed them, others admired them from their position as fighter pilots or bombers.

Their bond, their problems, their understanding and the lack of this on the part of the conventional society led them to lifelong bonds with beer in front of their H-D.

Those young ex-military men soon felt the rejection of society, which made their bond of blood stronger; their way of understanding life was different in the wake of the war and united, above all, the brotherhood of having

They wore leather jackets, or aviator jackets (the one that had been), but in them, they always wore the embroidery that remembered which brother they had fought with, their companies, their regiments, their squads, showed their weapons, their ranks, their specialties , they showed who they had fought for and who had defended them, they showed... the colors.

The Movie

The most modern custom of putting patches of concentrations, meetings, countries or souvenirs in the vests, has its origin in England and the culture MOD (Modernist English). An MC will only wear his colors on his jacket or vest, among other badges that we will see in future editions.

Sons of Anarchy, aka SAMCRO, is a television series created by Kurt Sutter about a club of motorcyclists who operate legally and illegally in a small town called Charming. Clay, the president, likes old school and violence; while Jax, his stepson and VP of the club, has had thoughts of changing the way things are being handled at the club, based on some writings he found from his late father. This is my favorite television series. I think they have done an incredible job of choosing the characters. The success of this series is to have been inspired by a real biker band, whose members advised the cast and script. Basically, as many say, we could define it as a “Hamlet with bikers. One hundred percent action and drama at the same time. In its seven seasons everything comes and goes in a masterful way without lowering its level in any. Interestingly, the actor Ron Perlman, to play Clay, had to overcome the fear he had motorcycles, a fear that he had to overcome to take the series forward and drive his Harley. 16

As a curious fact I will tell you that these jackets were drifting into vests, since these were easier to hide under a jacket. In this way, they could go unnoticed in case of problems, police or MC with which they had some rivalry.

the bike and continues his way. In those moments I notice that most of the time we complain about problems that have a solution. The lack of money, work, receipts, life is very expensive... But we do not look at how simple life can be. You have health, that is the most important thing. This trip was with a goal and, like everything in life, the course changed completely. I wanted to solve a personal problem and, in the end, I realized that it was not as serious as it seemed.

This 271 km trip, which I traveled in eight hours, has been interesting for the people I met on the way. The first was a character who was trying to solve the problem with his motorcycle, an AKT TT 150 model 2010 approximately. The man tried to catch her in despair and I decided to stop and see what I could help him with. I realized it was water in the carburetor and I decided to help him.

In life there is no need to stress, this only brings more problems. In our Motero world, as long as we have health, strength and a motorcycle that accompanies us in our adventures (whether accompanied or alone) the rest can be solved with patience and time.

Already entered into trust, he told me the problem he was in, something very personal, which I will not be able to share with you. Fixed the problem of the carburetor, this man manages to start

Located at km 69 of the Bogotá - Medellín highway via La Vega - Villeta, approximately two hours from Bogotá, we find a gastronomic paradise. The Country Restaurant El Chorizo de Carlos. Despite having passed through this place several times, until recently I decided to stop and see what it was about. They welcomed 18

me with a smile and a letter full of options.
