Dear friends,

The fall semester is now complete. From the moment that the first student-athletes returned in mid-August and throughout the semester, there has been an exciting and positive energy radiating through the campus. Such joyfulness was evident in the multiple student activities on the Sr. Kathleen Keating Quadrangle, the first studentorganized talent contest, the first-ever “Tailgate with the President” between a women’s field hockey game followed by a men’s soccer game, among other activities. Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed being back on an active campus pursuing the time-honored activities of teaching and learning.

In these challenging times for small colleges, we are thankful that Elms College was recognized in the local media for some of our achievements and contributions. Generous philanthropic support has allowed the College to continue to advance several initiatives, including those about which you will read in this issue of the Elms Magazine

• Trustee Regina Hitchery ’71 doubled down on her belief in the benefit of experiential learning for our students and honored her mother with a naming gift for the program, which will henceforth be known as the “Dolores Donlin Noonan ’39 Experiential Learning Program.”

• Rene and Lorraine ’57 Dube renewed their gift to the Class of 1957 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund and also named the first floor lobby of the Lyons Center for Natural and Health Sciences in honor of her and her sister, Elizabeth McMahon Dube ‘55.

• The W.K. Kellogg Foundation renewed their confidence in the Elms’ Haiti Nursing Continuing Education Program with a second generous grant to provide continuing education to two more cohorts of Nurse Educators in Haiti, in partnership with the Episcopalian University of Haiti.

• The National Science Foundation recognized Professors Beryl Hoffman’s and Nina Theis’s efforts to recruit students into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with a six-year STEM grant.

We are grateful for the many ways in which our benefactors contribute to our efforts to advance the mission. Alumni support takes many different forms, including through the facilitation of a summer internship for nursing students on Martha’s Vineyard for the second year in a row.

Looking ahead, 2023 will mark the 95th anniversary of the founding of Elms College by the Sisters of St. Joseph. We look forward to ushering a semester filled with continued positive energy and a year marked by the celebration of the enduring spirit and legacy of our founders.

St. Augustine tells us, “in order to discover the character of people, we have only to observe what they love.” Our love of Elms College and our commitment to the mission entrusted to us by the Sisters who founded Elms College bind us together in our efforts to empower all students, without distinction, to better themselves and their world.

On behalf of our students, I continue to be enormously grateful to you for your continued prayers and support as we strive to make a strong Catholic college education a possibility for all, especially those least likely to access it.

Best wishes to you during this holiday season,

Giving Experience for Life

Elms College designates Experiential Learning as one of its five core strategies because it is key to empowering students for “life after Elms.” Elms knows that meaningful experiential learning - gained through internships, field placements, sports, campus activities, and volunteer work - builds skills and helps students discover their career preferences and passions. By expanding their experience base, Elms graduates can demonstrate their capabilities to prospective employers.

Elms’ staff supporting the Experiential Learning Program (ELP) engage with students to help them expand their experiences through both paid and unpaid positions. Students connect with mentors to explore their options, develop specific ELP plans, and gradually build their skills. In the 2021-22 academic year, an impressive 86% of traditional student seniors participated in an least one experiential learning activity during their Elms’ studies.

Recently, Regina Noonan Hitchery, class of 1971, and her husband Joe Hitchery made a donation pledge in support of experiential learning and to honor Regina’s mother through the Dolores Donlin Noonan ’39 Fund. With financial stipends made possible through funds like this, students can apply to receive payment for unpaid internships they may otherwise need to forego.

As a retired human resources executive, Regina is acutely aware that “real-life” experiences complement academic learning and significantly enhance a person’s readiness for career roles. One of five children, she was fortunate to grow up in a family environment that encouraged the exploration of a variety of interests. Regina’s mother inspired her children through her own life path: working in the insurance industry after college, followed by motherhood and building her skills in volunteer leadership roles, later earning a Master’s in Library Science to become a middle school teacher-librarian.

Regina and each of her siblings had early learning experiences that fueled their careers. Martha Noonan Murtaugh, ’68, MAT ’91, benefited from a National Science Foundation research grant and hospital lab internships for research biology roles and later as a middle school science teacher.

Regina’s three brothers followed creative, entrepreneurial pursuits propelled by their hobbies, work experiences and passions: one earned recognition on the silver screen as a designer/builder of Hollywood movie sets, another founded Vermont’s first brew pub, and the youngest is the principal of a videography business.

Through their gift, Regina said she and Joe “hope to give students the opportunity to have meaningful experiences that positively impact their futures.”

For the Love of Science and Scholarship

For Lorraine Dube ‘57, her experiences at Elms produced a deep appreciation and abundant love of the college. She was a chemistry and biology double major who received a full scholarship for three years starting in her sophomore year.

Today, she and her husband, Rene, are faithful contributors to Elms on an annual basis and their recent generous donation was truly exceptional. Their leadership gift supported two noteworthy aspects near and dear to Lorraine’s heart: her love of science and her gratitude for receiving the full scholarship.

In recognition of her science background, Lorraine and Rene donated to the first floor lobby of the Lyons Center for Natural and Health Sciences in honor of the bond she had with her sister, Elizabeth McMahon Thomas ‘55. “Elizabeth was two years ahead of me and was a Chemistry major. In addition to being my big sister, she was my mentor,” said Lorraine.

The second part of their generous gift was earmarked to support the Class of 1957 Memorial Endowed Scholarship. After her first year at Elms, one of Lorraine’s good friends who had received a full four-year scholarship, moved to New Jersey. Thanks to Lorraine’s strong grades in her first year, the college

approved her to receive the remaining three years of that scholarship. "I loved the Elms when I was there and loved it ever since.”

Lorraine said, "By donating to this scholarship fund, I want current students to receive the same benefits from Elms that I had.”

To say that Elms has played a major role in Lorraine’s family is an understatement. “The college has been a big part of my life and my parents loved Elms when Elizabeth and I were there. My late sister fell in love with Elms, too, and her husband has donated to the Chemistry Suite Vestibule on the 3rd floor of the Lyons Center,” said Lorraine.

When asked what her favorite aspect of Elms was, Lorraine was quick with her response. "The friendships that I developed with science faculty and classmates. While I was attending Elms, I became good friends with a lot of science professors and of course, all of my classmates."

It’s fair to say that the bond between Lorraine and Elms College is as strong as ever and it’s remarkable how unbreakable it is after 65 years.

Elms Receives 2 Major Grants

Elms College receives a $1.1 million WKKF grant It is always terrific news when Elms College is the recipient of a major grant. When we receive two large grants in the span of a few months, let’s just say that we are beyond thrilled.

During the summer, Elms was informed that the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) had awarded the college a $1.1 million grant to continue the Haiti Nursing Continuing Education Program, an initiative designed to improve the health outcomes in Haiti through nurse faculty development. Back in 2019, the Elms College School of Nursing established a unique partnership with the Episcopal University of Haiti School of Nursing (EUH) and the WKKF, with the goal of improving the health of the Haitian people. The initial grant from WKKF was for $750,000.

In Haiti, most of the health care is delivered by nurses, not doctors. Therefore, nursing faculty throughout Haiti need leading-edge training to be better prepared to educate future Haitian nurses. In May 2022, the first two cohorts graduated through the program.

Since WKKF renewed its commitment and increased the funding to $1.1 million, the program can educate two more cohorts by the spring of 2024, at which time, over 100 nurse educators throughout Haiti will have completed the program.

Elms Faculty receive $1.5M STEM grant from the National Science Foundation

In August, Elms received word that it was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Through the six-year grant, “Growing STEM Student Success Through Scholarship and Community Building with Experiential Learning and Data Science,” the college will provide needbased scholarships to at least 10 high-achieving first-year students and 30 community college transfer students who want to pursue careers in science, technology, and mathematics. The scholarship amount will be up to $10,000 per year.

According to a state report issued in October 2021, STEM jobs will account for 40% of job growth in Massachusetts through 2028. Through this grant, Elms will be able to assist the recipients jump start their career in these growing fields. These scholarships will be available to community college transfer students starting in the spring 2023 semester and to first-year Elms students in the fall 2023 semester.

Conversation with Andrew Coston

On October 3, Andrew Coston, Ed.D., started a new chapter in his career by becoming the college’s new Vice President of Student Affairs. Within the first few weeks of his arrival, ElmsNews met with Andrew to see how he was settling in and get his ideas on the future.

Elms Magazine: Welcome to Elms and thank you for taking the time to meet with us. First off, how are you doing so far?

Andrew Coston: I am happy to say that I am doing well so far. The first few weeks have matched my expectations and more. The students, faculty, and other members of the college community have really made me feel welcome.

EM: When you were considering this position, what most interested you about Elms College?

Andrew: As I considered this position, the thing that most interested me was the sense of community that Elms seemed to have. Through the interview process, everyone talked about it and I could tell that they meant it. I also liked the fact that Elms is a small college. The work that we do in student affairs is even more impactful when we know our students and their stories. There is more opportunity to do that at a smaller college.

EM: What are the top 2-3 priorities you want to focus on in your first year?

Andrew: I have spent my first month on campus getting to know as many students, faculty, and staff as I can. I will continue to do that in order to build the relationships that will be necessary to help us to achieve our goals. I have several priorities for this year. Within the next few weeks, I would like to hire a residence life director and begin the process of expanding residence life programming throughout the year. Building student engagement on campus will be another priority this year. I also want to provide additional support for our commuter and non-traditional students.

EM: What expertise or skillset do you hope to bring to the Elms community?

Andrew: I have over 20 years of experience in student affairs and I have had a broad range of experiences including senior administration, student conduct, academic advising, coaching, career services, Title IX, and multicultural student affairs. I have also taught students in the classroom as an adjunct faculty member. These experiences have helped me to understand the needs of students in and outside of the classroom. I recognize how the departments in our division need to work together and with other members of the college community to help students be successful. I am very optimistic and I can also work well with a variety of people. I am a team builder. I feel that these qualities will serve me well in my position as Vice President of Student Affairs at Elms.

EM: Knowing that you have been here only a few weeks, what is your favorite part of campus thus far?

Andrew: My favorite place on the campus so far is the Keating Quadrangle. It is a hub of activity at times with people moving from one place on campus to another. It is also a social space where people are often stationary, sitting by the fire pit or at tables, or sometimes standing in conversation. It is an event space, used by various members of the college community to communicate with students. It is a place where people gather for many reasons. I have met several faculty, staff, and students there during my first month at Elms. There is very often a sense of community there that I enjoy. Thank you Andrew for taking the time to meet with us. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you around campus and on the Quad!

James Vassar ’06 was awarded the Sr. Margaret James McGrath Distinguished Alumni Award by Elms College President Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA, at Reunion this past summer. Vassar, a graduate of Elms College's social work program, is a Lieutenant in the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections. In this capacity, he implements the T.R.U.E. program, the number one ranked program in the nation for prison reform by the Department of Justice and National Institution of Corrections. The T.R.U.E. program stands for “Truthfulness to oneself and others; Respectfulness toward the community; Understanding ourselves and what brought us here; and Elevating into success.”

As high school students considering nursing programs, Chynna Pacheco ‘23 and Mia Rotatori ‘23 each quickly decided Elms College would be right for them.

Chynna, age 22, of Springfield, and Mia, age 21, of Naugatuck, Connecticut, said the size of the Elms nursing program, and close relationships faculty foster with students would be more beneficial than enrolling in some larger program at some larger school.

“I choose Elms because it is the smallest,” Chynna said. “I learn best in small classrooms, and I like knowing my professors.”

Mia said she did not want to be another anonymous student in a 100-seat classroom. The Elms gave her a chance to get to know her professors, and they to know her.

“I know that when they see my face, they know my name,” she said.

It was one of those close, multigenerational relationships –involving students, faculty and alumni – that led to Mia and Chynna being selected for a unique summer internship at one of America’s most desirable vacation sites.

They spent last summer working alongside nurses at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, a critical access, not-for-profit community hospital providing care for residents of the island and hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Alumna Martha Riley Bischoff, ‘87, a long-time nurse at the hospital, arranged for two paid internships for Elms nursing students. She said it was her way of repaying the college for launching her nursing career.

“I am the nurse I am because of the incredible foundation I received from the Elms School of Nursing,” she said. “This internship opportunity is a way for me to give back and help young nurses begin their career.”

She left it to the faculty to select the two recipients, based on class standing, ability and work ethic, and the potential to grow from the experience.

That led to faculty choosing Chynna and Mia.

Mia and Chynna said the experience at the hospital was invaluable.

“We were able to go with the nurses and see what they do more on a day-to-day basis,” Chynna said. She said it gave them a chance to experience what she called “a real nurse’s schedule” or three 12-hour shifts followed by four days off.

Off time on the island was spent at the beach, sightseeing, and eating at restaurants.

“I didn’t save any money but I don’t regret it,” Chynna said. Mia said her favorite part was the ocean view.

“One day we watched the sun rise, then spent the day, and then watched the sun set,” she said. Each said their entire experience was possible only because of the close and lasting relationships Elms creates with students, alumni and the community.

Two Blazer Veterans Retire from the Athletic Department

The retirements of Cheryl Condon as Head Softball Coach and Mariann Ingraham as Head Athletic Trainer brought to mind the old adage, “Old soldiers never die. They just fade away.”

In contrast, Elms Blazers don’t fade away, they light a fire and keep it burning. That is exactly what Cheryl and Mariann have done as core members of the Department of Athletics.

With over 70 years of combined experience at Elms, these two dedicated women have made an indelible mark on not only athletics at Elms but the whole Elms community. Director of Athletics, Mike Theulen, said it best. “They both have an unwavering commitment to Elms students, athletes, and the entire community.”

“As members of our athletic department, these two women have the distinction of being here the longest. Their contributions to the department are immeasurable. The foundations that they put in place continue to help the department progress as we move forward,” said Theulen.

Cheryl Condon started paving her Blazer trail when she first agreed to coach the softball team in 1986. This was the first season for the softball team. Later she also became director of athletics from 1998-2001 and was instrumental in effecting a smooth transition to co-ed athletics. “My main goal was to make the transition to include men’s sports fair and inclusive of everyone,” Cheryl remarked.

“It has been such a privilege to coach so many amazing athletes. Making a difference in someone’s life goes both ways,” Cheryl said. “I recruit these athletes and I am with them all through their college years. When I have attended each of the 32 commencement ceremonies for students I have coached, I am filled with such happiness because of their accomplishments.”

Mariann Ingraham couldn’t agree more. “It is incredibly rewarding to see the milestones the athletes achieve.” In 1991, Ingraham became Elms’ athletic trainer. At that time, the college only had seven women’s sports, but this doubled with the introduction of men’s sports. Ingraham accepted this additional demand headon and built the trainer program to respond to the needs of the athletes and the department to assure the health of the students.

Theulen remarked, “Mariann has the quiet determination of a leader. She was the college’s first full-time athletic trainer. She was so invested in the success of the department and all the students, she even delayed her retirement and stayed an additional year to make sure that everyone was healthy during COVID. She worked tirelessly with health services to maintain a healthy environment for the students.”

Cheryl Condon and Mariann Ingraham are the quintessential Blazers. Through example, they have shown a path for the current and future Blazer culture to follow.

"With that in mind, we are creating the Blazer Athletic Club that will allow Blazers past and present to connect with one another in new and exciting ways," said Theulen. These two women have lit a fire and the athletic department will keep it burning. They will not fade away. In fact, both enthusiastically declared that they will continue to attend games to cheer on the teams.

Condon remarked with a grin, “Once a Blazer, always a Blazer!”

As we emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Elms College community recommitted ourselves to working in a united way to challenge students to embrace change without compromising principle, to respond creatively to the demands of their chosen careers, and to advocate for people in need.

Elms College’s resilience and success in supporting our students stem from the ongoing efforts of our entire community: our engaged trustees, our dedicated faculty and staff, and our generous alumni, friends, and supporters.

This annual report presents some of the information that showcases the generosity of our financial contributors. Behind those numbers and donor names are stories of students who are learning, growing, making friends, finding their voice, and discovering their purpose.

Thank you for all that you do for our students and our college. It remains a privilege to collaborate with you on advancing our common mission. — Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA

WAYS OF GIVING

An Elms College education is a stepping stone for many graduates to lead lives full of meaningful work, success, and service to others. It is an investment that yields tremendous personal dividends.

Gifts of all sizes allow us to provide the financial assistance that many of our students need to reach their academic goals, to develop innovative academic programs, to respond to the demands of today’s world, and to acquire and improve our human resources, facilities, and equipment. Many of our students have access to the Elms only because of benefactors like you who support what we do and how we do it. Your gift really does make a difference here.

If you would like more information about making a planned gift or legacy gift, contact Bernadette Nowakowski ’89, ’08, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, at 413-265-2214 or nowakowskib@elms.edu.

This report has been prepared by the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Office of Institutional Marketing. The list of benefactors reflects gifts to the college during the fiscal year 2021-2022. Donations made since July 1, 2022, will appear in the next annual report. We have taken great care to ensure that complete and accurate listings appear. Should you find an error or omission, please bring it to the attention of the Office of Institutional Advancement at (413) 265-2403. Please note that an individual’s name may appear on several lists, and also that some benefactors have requested that their gifts be anonymous.
