www.elonphoenix.com Legend of the Phoenix
Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly
renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. • In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

Dr. Leo M. Lambert Elon University President Since becoming Elon University’s eighth president in January 1999, Leo M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning. Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improvements in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s topranked programs in study abroad, undergraduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed
Dave Blank Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank begins his fourth year as the Elon University Director of Athletics, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and a plan for facility improvements, including an now completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, permanent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics. During the 2008-09 campaign, five Phoenix squads earned higher league finishes than they had in the previous year. The Phoenix captured regular-season 2009 Phoenix Men’s Soccer
the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the six-building Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Compact and as a founding board member and president’s council chair of Project Pericles, a national organization that encourages students to become civically engaged in their communities. As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll. President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Commission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which comprises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities. Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.
Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA regional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament. In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tournament crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance. Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon posted SoCon outright regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008 and 2009) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years in the same position at Drake University where he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Also, Blank oversaw the addition of three women’s sports — crew, golf and soccer — as well as the completion of a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium. Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Issues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation. Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). He also spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in school history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

In Powell’s four seasons at the helm of the Elon squad, the program has produced 20 All-Southern Conference performers, a conference player of the year and a league freshman of the year. In 2007, Powell guided the Phoenix to an 8-7-4 overall record, marking the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 1987 and 1988. Elon went 4-3-0 in SoCon play to finish tied for third. Along the way, his team earned ties with North Carolina, Clemson and eventual national champion Wake Forest. The tie with top-ranked Wake Forest provided the Demon Deacons with their first blemish of the season. Under Powell’s leadership, the Elon program claimed its first-ever NCAA Division I national ranking in 2006 – appearing as high as 22nd in the Soccer

Jason O’Keefe Associate Head Coach Third season Greensboro ‘97 Jason O’Keefe was promoted to the role of associate head coach in June 2009 after serving on coach Darren Powell’s staff as an assistant coach for two seasons. During his time with the Phoenix, Elon has posted consecutive winning seasons with an overall mark of 18-16-5, winning its first-ever Southern Conference regularseason title in 2008. “Jason has been instrumental in moving this program forward on the field and in the classroom,” Powell said of O’Keefe’s promotion. “His passion for college soccer has been evident in his day-to-day approach and on the recruiting trail.” O’Keefe came to Elon in February 2007 after serving as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati during the 2006 season. O’Keefe helped the Bearcats to an 11-6-2 overall record and a Big East regular-season title. Cincinnati also participated in the 2006 NCAA College Cup, falling to Northwestern University in the first round. Prior to joining the staff at Cincinnati, O’Keefe worked as an assistant at Wake Forest for three seasons. During his time

In each of the last two seasons, at least one Elon goalkeeper has been honored with All-Southern Conference accolades. In 2007, Elon true freshman keeper Clint Irwin claimed all-league honors and Phoenix keepers combined to help lead the program to a school-record four consecutive shutouts. Last year, Irwin and senior Kyle Boerner were both named to the all-conference teams. Irwin had a GAA of 0.90 and stopped 31 shots while Boerner recorded a save percentage of .742. The 2005 squad posted a 13-8-2 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA College Cup. O’Keefe has coached under Powell one other time, serving as an assistant coach at Greensboro, his alma mater, in 2000. Powell left after the 2000 season, but O’Keefe spent two more seasons with the Pride. Greensboro captured three consecutive regular-season and tournament crowns and achieved a ranking in the NCAA-III top-10 in each of O’Keefe’s years with the team. O’Keefe, who holds a USSF “A” license and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, is a North Carolina ODP staff coach and was the head coach of the Carolina Dynamo Super Y-League from 2002-06. He also coached the Super Y-League South Atlantic Regional team from 2004-06. The 2009 Elon men’s soccer team is looking forward to building on the success of last year, returning eight starters from a team that ran through the Southern Conference slate and won the program’s first-ever regular-season league crown. The Phoenix soccer program has continued to thrive under the leadership of head coach Darren Powell, the reigning SoCon Coach of the Year. Now in his fifth season at Elon, the Phoenix has posted .500 or better records in each of his four years. “We are very excited about the 2009 season,” Powell commented. “We return 22 players from last year’s conference championship team. The players have been working very hard this spring and I hope that momentum will carry us well into the fall with our difficult schedule.” One of the most notable faces returning to the lineup this year is senior midfielder Justin Wyatt. The 2008 SoCon Player of the Year racked up a team and league-best 13 goals and 33 points. Wyatt, a first-team all-conference honoree, is currently tied for second in the Phoenix record books for career goals (26) and points (64). He netted a goal in every SoCon match last year and his ability to finish will be critical to Elon’s success. Also looking to help the Phoenix attack in 2009 will be senior Erfan Imeni, junior Stephen Dilger, sophomore Denzel Ogunyase and freshmen Chris Thomas and Archie Karpeh. From his attacking midfielder position, Imeni scored five goals and assisted on four others during his junior season. Imeni was another of Elon’s eight all-conference members in 2008, recognized with first-team honors. Dilger connected on two strikes and tallied three assists during his sophomore season. Two of his helpers came on game-winning goals, including one on the golden goal against UNC Asheville. As a true freshman, Ogunyase saw action in 17 games last year and had strong spring performances as well. Rookie Chris Thomas, the reigning Gatorade Georgia Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year, could have an immediate impact on the Phoenix. Thomas netted 143 goals during his prep career, leading Greater Atlanta Christian to three state titles. Karpeh, who joined the Elon team in the spring, has been a member of the U.S. U-17 National Team and was a two-time adidas All-American. Joining Wyatt and Imeni in the midfield will be a healthy mix of experienced veterans and young talents. Junior Brad Franks and sophomore James Carroll were consistent starters last season.
6
Franks dropped in two goals, including the game-winner over league rival Furman to keep Elon’s undefeated season intact. Carroll’s play earned him a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team. Seniors Daniel Street and Stephen Miller, junior Hunter Miller and sophomores Drew Gardner and Tony Pusateri, have also contributed valuable minutes in the midfield. Red-shirt freshman Morgan Fleming can be a factor at several different positions as well. Newcomer Gabe Latigue, a native of Apex, N.C., will join Elon in the midfield after leading Panther Creek High School to a 2008 Tri-8 4A Conference title. The league player of the year earned NSCAA All-South region accolades following his final season. Senior co-captain Steven Kinney will anchor an experienced defense from his center back position. The two-time first-team all-conference selection has been a starter since his rookie season, and helped Elon to seven shutout performances in 2008. Kinney also proved a threat on the offensive end, scoring a goal
against William & Mary and posting four assists, including two in Elon’s conference tournament victory over Wofford. Joining Kinney in the back will be fellow captain Clint Collins. Collins started all 20 matches during his junior season, notching two assists and collecting second-team All-SoCon accolades. Senior Orry Powers and junior Ben Lunka were major contributors to Elon’s back line last year. Powers started in all 20 matches while Lunka saw action in 17 games. Junior Greg Mader, sophomore Austen King, red-shirt freshman Jahan Threeths and newcomers Nick Butterly and Mark Berlin will also compete for time in the back. The Phoenix will welcome the return of junior Clint Irwin in goal after an injury sidelined him for part of the season in 2008. Irwin played and started in eight games last year, recording four shutouts and a 0.78 goals against average. Despite the injury, Irwin earned second-team all-conference honors. He currently ranks fifth all-time at Elon with nine career shutouts. Elon’s lineup also boasts three additional and capable keepers in red-shirt freshmen Jordan Neuhauser and Chat Ott and rookie Reed Dillard. Neuhauser and Ott had the opportunity to learn from Irwin and graduated first-team AllSoCon honoree Kyle Boerner. Dillard, a native of Dallas, Texas and a three-sport athlete at Plano West, helped the school’s top-ranked soccer and baseball teams to national championships as a senior. The experience of the Phoenix roster will be important as the team faces a difficult schedule in 2009. Elon will meet four teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament, including College Cup participants Wake Forest and North Carolina. Powell continues to stress the importance of challenging his players each and every day to be successful throughout the entire season…including a run through the NCAA Tournament.

The Southern Conference, which begins its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. Elon joined the league in 2003. The SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The SoCon has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won three of the last four Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The SoCon office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first-class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The SoCon was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference where he promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The first SoCon championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Elon in the Pros Over the past four years, Elon soccer players have experienced success breaking into the professional ranks. Following the 2005 season, defender Anthony Catalano became the first Phoenix men’s soccer player to sign a professional contract. Catalano inked with the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division. He made his professional debut on Sunday, June 11, 2006 against the Puerto Rico Islanders. Catalano also spent a year with the Richmond Kickers of the USL Second Division in 2008. Elon has since seen two other players play professional soccer. Most recently, forward Aaron Parker signed a contract in April 2009 to compete with the Wilmington Hammerheads, a USL Second Division team. Parker made his professional debut against the Charlotte Eagles, playing in the final 10 minutes of a 2-2 tie.
Kiki Willis, the 2005 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, signed a developmental contract with D.C. United of Major League Soccer following the 2006 season.
