www.elonphoenix.com Legend of the Phoenix
Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly
renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

Dr. Leo M. Lambert Elon University President Since becoming Elon University’s eighth president in January 1999, Leo M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning. Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improvements in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s topranked programs in study abroad, undergraduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed
Dave Blank Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank begins his fourth year as the Elon University Director of Athletics, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and a plan for facility improvements, including an now completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, permanent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics. During the 2008-09 campaign, five Phoenix squads earned higher league finishes than they had in the previous year. The Phoenix captured regular-season 2009 Phoenix Women’s Soccer
the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the six-building Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Compact and as a founding board member and president’s council chair of Project Pericles, a national organization that encourages students to become civically engaged in their communities. As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll. President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Commission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which comprises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities. Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.
Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA regional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament. In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tournament crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance. Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon posted SoCon outright regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008 and 2009) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years in the same position at Drake University where he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Also, Blank oversaw the addition of three women’s sports — crew, golf and soccer — as well as the completion of a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium. Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Issues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation. Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). He also spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in school history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Chris Neal Head Coach 44-30-7 (Overall) 8-8-3 (at Elon) Chris Neal enters his second season as the head coach of the Phoenix women’s soccer team. Neal was named the head man in January of 2008 after spending the previous seven seasons as an assistant at UNC Wilmington. In his first season at Elon, the Phoenix posted an 8-8-3 mark, the team’s first .500 or better record since the 1999 season. Elon also earned its first-ever win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent with a 1-0 road victory over Maryland. Elon’s end-of-season national ranking (RPI) experienced a significant leap as well, moving up 55 spots from the end of 2007 season. The Phoenix also moved up in the highly competitive Southern Conference regular-season standings, earning a 7th place finish out of 12 teams. Three players were named to all-conference teams as well. Prior to arriving at Elon, Neal helped his alma mater, UNC Wilmington, to a record of 70-55-8 (.556) from 2001-07. Just as strong off the field, the Seahawks earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for five consecutive campaigns during Neal’s time with the program. Before returning to his alma mater in 2001, Neal enjoyed a successful stint as the head men’s soccer coach at Pfeiffer University. In his three seasons at Pfeiffer (1998-2000), Neal directed the Falcons to a 36-22-4 (.613) ledger and their first-ever NCAA Division II ranking at 13th in the country.
6
Neal also served two campaigns as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Augusta State (1996-97), where he helped the Jaguars improve from a 7-8 record in 1996 to a 14-6 slate in 1997. Neal served the NSCAA as its state technical director from 2001-08. In this role, he was responsible for organizing, advertising and instructing a variety of coaching education courses for hundreds of youth, high school and college coaches. Neal is a USSF April Heinrichs Scholarship recipient, recognizing him for making a positive impact on the sport of women’s soccer. The UNCW graduate earned his bachelor of arts degree as a political science major and a Spanish minor in 1995 and his master of education degree in education administration and supervision at Augusta State University in 1998. He holds the National Soccer Coaches Association of America “Premier” diploma and the United States Soccer Federation “A” license – both the highest level possible. During his senior year of high school and freshman year of college, a series of knee injuries sidelined Neal’s competitive playing days. As a goalkeeper, Neal was a product of the Wilmington United and Cape Fear SA club teams, as well as New Hanover High School where he earned all-conference honors. Neal and his wife, Amy, are expecting their first child in November. The couple resides in Gibsonville.

Stuart Horne Assistant Coach Fifth season UMASS-Amherst ‘97 Stuart Horne enters his fifth season with the Phoenix women’s soccer program. Horne came to Elon in 2005 after spending five years as the head women’s soccer coach at Chowan University. Last year, Elon had its most successful season during Horne’s tenure. The Phoenix posted an 8-8-3 record, the program’s best mark since the 1999 campaign. Elon moved up in the Southern Conference rankings, finishing 7th among 12 teams. Three players were also recognized on all-league teams. Prior to coming to Elon, Horne inherited a Chowan program that regularly dwelled near the bottom of the NCAA Division III ranks. Under his leadership, Chowan improved every year, culminating with a NSCAA South Region top-15 ranking in 2004. Horne guided the Braves to their firstever postseason berth with a trip to the 2003 USA South Conference Tournament. The following year, Chowan captured
the NCCAA South Region title and advanced to the Final Four of the 2004 NCCAA Tournament. The Braves capped that campaign with a 13-6-4 record and the NCCAA No. 3 national ranking as Horne was crowned the 2004 NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year. Horne left Chowan with a program-record 44 victories. From 2002-04, Horne also served as an assistant for the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a member of the United Soccer League’s W-League. He helped direct the team to playoff appearances in each of his three seasons. The Piranhas finished the 2003 season a perfect 14-0 on their way to claiming the W-League national title. Horne has been involved with the Olympic Development Program in both Virginia and North Carolina. In Virginia, he was a staff coach with the girls’ program in the Southeast District. Horne ran the North Carolina ODP Training Center on the Outer Banks. He has earned both the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and the USSF D License. Horne holds a degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. He graduated cum laude in 1997.

As the Elon women’s soccer team prepares for the 2009 season, secondyear head coach Chris Neal offered his thoughts on everything from his first season to the potential of the Phoenix soccer program. Year one is in the books. What are your thoughts of your first year at the helm of the Phoenix soccer program? Year one will always be special for me. From a competitive standpoint, I feel we got the team turned around and headed in the right direction. The team’s work ethic was phenomenal and was a key to our victories. Off the field, I was very fortunate to inherit a great group of girls. The team chemistry was great and they were a pleasure to coach. Your immediate impact on the program is obvious, seeing that the 2008 women’s soccer team had its first .500 or better season since 1999. What were the biggest challenges in your first season? The biggest coaching challenge was getting the players to believe in themselves. The team had experienced many tough seasons in the win/loss column. Eventually that will wear you down. We spent much of the 2008 spring season on building confidence. You have a very young squad in 2009 with 13 newcomers. What are your thoughts on the 2009 recruiting class? The 2009 freshman class is a talented and balanced group. We have a variety of strengths within these freshmen. They will have to work hard, especially on the fitness component, to get acclimated to NCAA Division I soccer. I am excited to see how they compliment our great foundation of returning players. Who are some of the leaders on this team that will step up to guide this young group? We are blessed with many kids that have their own unique way of leading. Obviously, we will look to our captains Morgan Wallace, Lauren Griffith, Laura Norwind and Alanna Winsper - to set the overall tone for our team. On the field, the work rate of Alix Heinicke, Lauren Griffith and Molly Calpin sets a standard for our team to achieve. Our young players are very fortunate to have such great leaders and role models to look up to. What are some characteristics you look for when recruiting Elon student-athletes? I look for a variety of things when recruiting. It is a four-year player-coach
8
relationship if an athlete chooses your university. The most important characteristics I seek are maturity and character. I find it difficult to recruit a student-athlete, regardless of their skill set, if there are red flags in these areas. From an academic standpoint, Elon is a demanding university. It is paramount that, based on the student-athlete’s academic history, she stands a good chance of making the grade here at Elon. From a playing standpoint, we look for a combination of technical skill, athleticism, understanding of the game and competitive drive. What is the first thing you try to instill in your newcomers at the beginning of preseason? The most important thing for the newcomers to understand is that they must invest and commit themselves into the team culture and family. As a newcomer, there are distractions, home-sickness, etc. Things are simply different than what they have been used to during the past four years in high school. As a family, we let them know that we are here to support them and that we expect them to give everything for the team. What players have made the most improvement from 2008-2009? Brittany Hallberg has struggled with injury and compartment syndrome. Instead of using it as an excuse, she committed herself and showed up in the best shape she has ever been in. She is still in pain, but she fights through it. Frankly, I was worried she would not be ready for this season but after our first week of preseason she appears ready for competition. Alanna Winsper also struggled with injury during the spring and summer but has reported in top shape. As our returning team MVP, Alanna continued to push herself in the offseason. What will the strengths and weaknesses be of the 2009 club? I feel one of our greatest strengths will be depth in a variety of positions. I also feel we have the personnel to score goals in different ways than we did last year. After losing five starters to graduation, our biggest weakness will surely be experience. Establishing our team chemistry as soon as possible is paramount.
Talk a bit about the Southern Conference as well as your opponents in the non-conference part of the schedule. I feel our non-conference schedule will prepare us for SoCon play. I am excited to kick-off against my alma mater, UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks have finished second two of the last three seasons in the highly competitive Colonial Athletic Association. This will be a great first test for us. The SoCon, due to financial cutbacks, will only take four of the 12 teams to the conference tournament this season. The obvious bad news is that there is less room for error in conference play. The good news is that if you earn a top four spot, you now only have to win two games to earn an NCAA berth. The SoCon is a very competitive league. In 2008, SoCon women’s soccer teams defeated teams from the top leagues in the country. Elon defeated the University of Maryland (ACC), UNC Greensboro defeated Santa Clara (PAC-10), Western Carolina topped South Carolina (SEC), Furman beat Clemson (ACC), and Davidson was victorious against Virginia Tech (ACC). The league is stacked with great coaches who are also great recruiters. The caliber of play gets better each year. What are your thoughts on the potential of the program? I feel we can consistently compete for the SoCon regular-season and tournament championships, as well as an NCAA Tournament berth. Our administration and university are providing us with the resources needed to take our program to the next level.

All-Conference Honors
The 2008 Elon women’s soccer team set a new program record with three players being named to the All-Southern Conference teams. Seniors Katie Persichini and Katina Boozer earned second team all-league honors while rookie Andrea Keller was selected to the All-Freshman team. Persichini tallied a goal and an assist from her midfield position while Boozer netted three strikes and was tied for the team lead with five assists. Keller, a defender, helped the Phoenix rack up seven shutouts.
So Close
The Phoenix played numerous close games in 2008, needing extra minutes in five contests. Elon got one overtime win and one overtime loss, but the other three games resulted in a tie. The Phoenix ended its season with a 1-1 tie to

Big Win
Elon goalkeepers Sydney Little and Lizz Johnson combined for one of Elon’s seven shutouts when the team earned a 1-0 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland. With eight saves and the lone goal off the foot of Molly Calpin in the 67th minute, Elon posted only its second win ever over current ACC opponents.
First-Year Success
The Phoenix saw major improvement under first-year head coach Chris Neal in 2008. The team’s record of 8-8-3 was the first .500 or better mark since the 1999 campaign. Elon also earned four conference wins and moved to seventh in the standings out of 12 teams.

The Southern Conference, which begins its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. Elon joined the league in 2003. The SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The SoCon has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won three of the last four Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The SoCon office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first-class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The SoCon was formed on February
25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference where he promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The first SoCon championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

1999 Women’s Soccer — Elon’s First-Ever NCAA Division I Tournament Participant
Overall Record: 10-8-2 • Big South Record: 4-2-0
The 2009 season marks the 10th anniversary of the 1999 Elon women’s soccer team that won the Big South Conference Tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In Elon’s first year of NCAA Division I play, the women’s soccer squad earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA College Cup by defeating Liberty, 3-2, in overtime of the Big South title game. Elon scored two first half goals before Liberty responded with two of its own to send the match to extra minutes. Marissa Venuti’s breakaway goal, her third strike of the contest, won the game for the Phoenix in the 103rd minute of play. Elon’s Erin Morse was honored as the Big South Tournament MVP and she joined Lauren Haas, Erin Lautermilch and Venuti on the league’s all-tournament team. The Phoenix went on to face the 22nd-ranked Duke Blue Devils in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Elon scored first on Patricia Clark’s goal at the 20:56 mark of the first period. Venuti was credited with the assist. Duke quickly responded, scoring consecutive goals just four minutes after Elon’s score. The Devils would advance to the second round of the tournament with a final score of 3-1.
