The Southern Conference, which begins its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the studentathlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected fromSoCon institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. The first Southern Conference championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Dr. Leo M. Lambert, President

Leo M. Lambert became Elon University’s eighth president on Jan. 1, 1999. His tenure has been marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which guides Elon’s efforts to become one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities. Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among college and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several national projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the American Council on Education and the American Association for Higher Education. In 1998, Change magazine named him one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education. Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, New York, have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

Dave Blank, Director of Athletics

Dave Blank enters his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08 campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club – and set a plan in motion for future facility improvements. Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon's 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign. Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men's soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regular season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship and the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a two-season stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix â&#x20AC;&#x201C; reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire.

Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever.

The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself.

The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge.

The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence.

2007 Elon Soccer Academic Progress/Athletic Training

Elon University Athletics is proactive in ensuring the graduation of its student-athletes. One way Elon promotes the committment to acadmics is through the academic enhancement program. The AEP provides an opportunity for students to excel with the help of tutors and an progress academic counselor. Elon provides each student-athlete with the necessary help and support needed to be academically successful at Elon University. All freshman student-athletes and select upperclassmen participate in the AEP. The academic progress and class attendance of student-athletes in the AEP are monitored, progress reports are mailed to professors once each semester and midterm and final grades are checked. Workshops aimed at enhancing a student-athlete's personal, academic and career development are also offered. In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic trainers, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President's List or the Dean's List honors last spring.

2007 Elon Soccer 2007 Outlook

Coach Darren Powell’s Elon Phoenix squad enters the 2007 campaign looking to compete for the program’s first-ever Southern Conference men’s soccer title. Coming off of its first-ever winning season at the NCAA Division I level, the team hopes to improve on its 10-8-2 record from a year ago, but the 2007 version of the Phoenix is a young one. The 25-man roster includes 16 players who are either freshmen or sophomores.

Goalkeepers The 2007 roster features two goalkeepers who are mostly unproven at the collegiate level. With the departure of AllSoCon and all-region performer Taylor Saxe, Powell will look to junior Kyle Boerner (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) and freshman Clint Irwin (Charlotte, N.C.). Boerner started three matches as a sophomore and allowed just two goals while making 10 saves. Irwin comes in as a highly-touted recruit after being named the North Carolina Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association and an All-American and National Player of the Year by the National Christian School Athletic Association. Powell says, “We have two good goalkeepers who will push and support each other all season in both games and practices.”

Defenders The Phoenix must replace three-time All-SoCon selection Junior Nombre in the back, but Powell believes his crop of defenders could be one of the best groups in the league. Of the 10 defenders on the roster, five have collegiate experience. Senior Alex Douyon (Columbia, Md.) is one of five seniors on the team while sophomores Steven Kinney (Norcross, Ga.) and Stephen Miller (Waxhaw, N.C.) also return in the back. Redshirt freshman Hunter Miller (Roanoke, Va.) also returns to the squad. Junior Andrew Johnson (Medina, Ohio) also returns this season after missing 2006 with an injury. Kinney was one of only four Elon players to start all 20 matches a year ago while Miller saw time in 12 contests. Kinney is also a threat on the offensive end as he netted three goals a year ago. Powell will look to five freshmen to solidify the back line. Drew Gardner (Cary, N.C.), Chris Leko (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), Ben Lunka (Waite Hill, Ohio), Greg Mader (Durham, N.C.) and Kevin Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) will battle for time this season. Leko was Steven Kinney a 2006 Canadian National U18 Youth Player and a member of the Canadian National U17 Team in 2005 while Mader participated in the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game. If fit, Gardner could be a strong player this year. “We have several players in the back who will compete for spots,” says Powell. “We will try to identify our back four early so that they can form a solid, united unit.” Midfielders Elon’s midfield returns the most depth from a year ago. Back to the roster are sophomores Clint Collins (Marietta, Ga.), Erfan Imeni (Burlington, N.C.), Daniel Street (Charlotte, N.C.) and Justin Wyatt (Raleigh, N.C.); junior Will Mason (Russell, Ohio) and senior Alex Barake (Chesterfield, Mo.). The lone new midfielder is freshman Brad Franks (Medford, N.J.). Wyatt is the team’s leading returning scorer, netting four goals and recording two assists as a true freshman in 2006. Paschall added three goals and two assists a year ago while Mason notched three assists and Street tallied one score. Barake is solid defensively, while Collins, Imeni and Stephen Miller are developing into quality players. Franks should push those players for time this fall. Powell stated, “We have several options in the midfield this year in terms of style and combinations. We are excited to work with this unit.”

Forwards Up top, Elon will have to replace its top two scorers in Kiki Willis (eight goals, four assists) and Nick Aparicio (three goals, 10 assists). Powell will turn to seniors Douglas Boateng (Woodbridge, Va.), Jon Juchno (Langhorne, Pa.) and Brett Paschall (Summerfield, N.C.); junior Aaron Parker (Buckner, Ky.) and freshman Stephen Dilger (Wake Forest, N.C.) to fill the spots up top. When healthy, Boateng has shown that he can score. In 2004, he took home Second Team All-SoCon honors after netting seven goals. Paschall netted three goals and added two assists during his junior campaign while Parker scored twice. Juchno and Dilger will add depth up front for Powell in 2007. “Our forwards have a great opportunity this fall, added Powell. “We need them to get confident early so they can finsh the chances we will create for them.” 2007 Media Guide - 7

Darren Powell was hired as the head coach of the Phoenix men's soccer program in December of 2004. Powell came to Elon after serving four seasons as an assistant at Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro. In his first season with the Phoenix, Powell led the squad to a 9-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in SoCon action, finishing third in the league. Elon emerged from that campaign with two First Team All-SoCon selections, two Second Team AllSoCon honorees, the SoCon Freshman of the Year, three SoCon Players of the Week, two SoCon All-Tournament picks, two NSCAA All-South Region players, one College Soccer News AllFreshman choice and one USL professional player. For his efforts, Powell was honored as the 2005 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Under Powell’s leadership, the Elon program claimed its first-ever NCAA Division I national ranking in 2006 – appearing as high as 22nd in the Soccer America poll on September 12 after starting the campaign with a 6-1-0 ledger, including a 2-0 victory over then-No. 17 UAB. His team finished the year at 10-82 overall, the program’s first winning year since moving to the Division I ranks for the 1999 season. At UNCG, Powell assisted in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, scheduling and academic development. The Spartan program posted a 55-26-3 mark in his four seasons there and became the nation's top-ranked program during the regular season in 2004. Powell was honored as one of the top NCAA Division I assistant coaches by College Soccer News and has coached three MLS players, one NSCAA Senior All-Star, three All-Americans, one Academic All-American, four All-Region honorees, 22 All-SoCon selections, two conference Freshman of the Year award winners and one league Player of the Year while at UNCG. Prior to joining the Spartan staff, Powell headed the Greensboro College program for three seasons, posting a 50-12-3 ledger. He led the Pride to the NCAA Division III finals in 1998 and Dixie Conference titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. His program produced a MLS and English Premier League player, two NSCAA Senior All-Stars, three AllAmericans, 15 All-Region choices, 25 All-Dixie Conference selections, three league Players of the Year and two conference Rookies of the Year. In 1998, Powell was honored by the NSCAA as the South Region Coach of the Year after being named the Dixie Conference Coach of the Year. The Pride finished ranked second in the nation in 1998, eighth in the country in 1999 and 12th nationally in 2000. Powell played professionally for the Carolina Dynamo USISL team, the Raleigh Flyers A-League team and the Wilmington Hammerheads USISL team from 1995-1999. Powell is also heavily involved in youth soccer in North Carolina. He serves as a staff coach at the Greensboro Soccer Club and has been a North Carolina ODP head coach for the past six years. Powell graduated from UNC Greensboro in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in leisure studies where he helped the Spartans make two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was a two-time captain, team MVP and AllSouth Region selection as well as a three-time All-Big South Conference honoree. Jason O’Keefe joined Darren Powell’s staff in February of 2007 after serving as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati for the 2006 season. He has also spent time at Wake Forest University and Greensboro College as an assistant. O’Keefe helped the Bearcats to an 11-6-2 overall record and a Big East regular season title in 2006. Cincinnati also participated in the 2006 NCAA College Cup, falling to Northwestern University in the first round. Prior to joining the staff at Cincinnati, O’Keefe worked as an assistant at Wake Forest for three seasons. During his time with the Demon Deacons, the program compiled a 13-8-2 overall record and reached the third round of the NCAA College Cup in 2005. Wake Forest went 4218-4 during O’Keefe’s tenure. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Greensboro, his alma mater. During his time with the Pride, Greensboro captured three consecutive regular season and tournament titles and was ranked in the NCAA-III top-10 all three years. O’Keefe joined the Greensboro staff in 2000 when Powell hired him to his staff in his final year with the Pride. O’Keefe, who holds a USSF “A” license and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, was a North Carolina ODP staff coach and head coach of the Carolina Dynamo of the Super Y-League from 2002-06. He also coached the Super Y-League South Atlantic Regional team from 2004-06. O’Keefe is also involved in youth soccer and currently serves as the director of coaching for the local Burlington Soccer Club. O’Keefe graduated from Greensboro in 1997 with a degree in history and education. He played for the Pride from 19921996, helping the team to three NCAA-III Tournament appearances, a 1994 conference title and a 1996 South Region championship. A new addition to the Phoenix coaching staff this year, Joe Crump will serve as the squad’s goalkeepers coach. Crump played for coach Darren Powell at UNC Greensboro as a three-year starting goalie. He helped lead the Spartans to a SoCon runner-up finish in 2001. During his three seasons as a starter, UNCG posted a 39-23-1 record. Working with the Greensboro Youth Soccer Association, Crump has trained and evaluated goalkeepers within the Piedmont Triad area. He also has planned goalkeeper training sessions while serving as a goalkeeper coach at Triangle United in Chapel Hill, N.C. T The 2003 UNCG graduate holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

ELON AND THE V FOUNDATION

Last year, the Elon men’s soccer team hosted its third annual match that benefited The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The first of these matches came in 2004 when the Phoenix hosted the then-defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. A silent auction was held to raise money for The V Foundation featuring items from MLS teams, collegiate programs, NFL teams and The V Foundation to name a few. In 2007, the Phoenix will continue to help raise money for The V Foundation to assist in the fight against cancer. This year’s match will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 against North Carolina and will be played in Rhodes Stadium.
