The Southern Conference
The Southern Conference, which begins its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the develop-
ment of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The SoCon has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last three Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The SoCon office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The SoCon was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference where he promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The first SoCon championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball. 2008 Elon Phoenix Soccer

Dr. Leo M. Lambert – Elon University President Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field. Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achievements in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.
Dave Blank – Elon University Director of Athletics
Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he has ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation and expansion of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis. 2008 Elon Phoenix Soccer

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire! The Elon University Department of Athletics is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registration services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills. Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. Registration Services All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation requirements and student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as in-season versus out-of-season scheduling. Life Skills In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the studentathlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health/wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Alamance County communities. Academic Success Phoenix athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Last year, Elon landed two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and saw 57 student-athletes earn Academic All-Southern Conference honors. 2008 Elon Phoenix Soccer

Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Darren Powell, the 2008 edition of the Elon Phoenix enters the year expecting to contend for its first-ever Southern Conference title. The squad is coming off of an 8-7-4 overall record and a 4-3-0 SoCon mark which was good enough to tie the Phoenix for third place in the league. With that winning record last year, Powell guided Elon to its first back-to-back winning seasons since the 1987 and 1988 campaigns. This year’s group of 27 players consists of three seniors, seven juniors, eight sophomores, a red-shirt freshman and eight freshmen will look to run that streak to three consecutive seasons. Goalkeepers Powell’s roster boasts four goalkeepers in 2008, including 2007 Second Team All-SoCon performer Clint Irwin (Charlotte, N.C.). Irwin, a sophomore, will be joined by senior Kyle Boerner (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) and freshmen Chat Ott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jordan Neuhauser (Scotch Plains, N.J.) in goal this season. The recipient of the team’s Top Newcomer award, Irwin, a 2008 preseason All-SoCon choice, logged the majority of the playing time during his freshman season, starting 13 of Elon’s 19 total matches. In his rookie campaign, Irwin posted five shutouts and a 1.13 GAA while making 37 saves. Irwin was in net during Elon’s 1-1 tie with top-ranked and eventual NCAA champion Wake Forest. Boerner started the other six contests, claiming two shutouts, and was in goal for the Phoenix’s 1-1 ties with Clemson and North Carolina. He notched a 0.73 GAA while making 33 saves. Ott and Neuhauser will provide much needed depth at the position, but are both capable keepers if needed. Ott was an all-state selection and claimed 2007 NSCAA All-South accolades as a prep at Norfolk Academy. Neuhauser earned first team all-conference honors three times and second team NJISAA all-prep honors twice while at WardlawHartridge High. The 2007 team captain set program marks for consecutive starts and saves. “Kyle and Clint are two very good goalkeepers who will push each other all season,” stated Powell. “This position is a strong asset to our team. If Chat and Jordan can learn from these two, they too can have a bright future at Elon.” Defenders Elon’s back line has the potential to be the best in the SoCon. Returning are junior First Team All-SoCon and Second Team NSCAA All-South performer Steven Kinney (Norcross, Ga.), junior Clint Collins (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomores Ben Lunka (Waite Hill, Ohio), Greg Mader (Durham, N.C.) and Kevin Murray (Greensboro, N.C.). The defense has been bolstered by the additions of junior transfer Orry Powers (Clayton, N.C.) as well as freshmen Jahan Threeths (Roswell, Ga.) and Austen King (Wilson, N.C.). Kinney, the 2007 team MVP and all-state selection, was the anchor of a Phoenix defensive unit which recorded a program-record four consecutive shutouts a year ago. In his two seasons, Kinney, a 2008 preseason All-SoCon choice, has started every contest and has shown that he can be a threat offensively as well. Last year, Kinney netted one goal and has four in his two seasons at Elon. Collins started 15 matches as a sophomore while Lunka appeared in 18 contests and made 14 starts. Mader and Murray saw limited actions, combining to appear in five games. Powers transferred to Elon from North Carolina State where he started all 18 matches and tallied seven points and three goals for the Wolfpack last season. His presence on the Phoenix back line improves an already solid unit. Threeths had the benefit of practicing with the team in the spring as he enrolled at Elon in February. Prior to coming to joining the Phoenix, Threeths was Roswell High’s Rookie of the Year in 2005 and team MVP in 2007. He also helped the Concorde Fire to the 2006 USYSA national finals. King was a member of the 2007 NCSCA Men’s All-State Team and earned a spot on the 2008 NCSCA “Clash of the Carolinas” All-Star team. At Ralph L. Fike High, he helped the program claim conference crowns in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Says Powell, “We believe we had a strong, solid back four last year and, with them all returning plus the solid additions, we hope to improve our defensive record.” Midfielders Seven of the 11 midfielders on the 2008 roster have collegiate game experience, while one is a red-shirt freshman and three are true freshmen. Back for Elon in the midfield will be First Team All-SoCon, Second Team NSCAA All-South and all-state honoree junior Justin Wyatt (Raleigh, N.C.) as well as SoCon All-Tournament selection senior Will Mason (Russell, Ohio). Other returners are juniors Daniel Street (Charlotte, N.C.) and Stephen Miler (Waxhaw, N.C.), sophomores Chris Leko (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), Brad Franks (Medford, N.J.) and Hunter Miller (Roanoke, Va.) and red-shirt freshman Drew Gardner (Cary, N.C.). New additions James Carroll (Charlotte, N.C.), Morgan Fleming (Raleigh, N.C.) and Tony Pusateri (Rockville, Md.) provide Powell with even more options at midfield. Wyatt, a 2008 preseason All-SoCon selection, led Elon with nine goals and 21 points as a sophomore, netting a team-high three game-winning goals last year. Mason, who played mostly at defender in 2007, assisted on two Phoenix scores a year ago. Mason also started all 19 matches last season and was a SoCon All-Tournament honoree. Street scored twice and notched three assists during his sophomore campaign while Stephen Miller started all 19 contests and scored one goal and recorded two assists. During their freshman seasons, Leko scored two goals in 17 games while Franks earned two points with two assists in 18 contests. Hunter Miller appeared in 16 games as a red-shirt freshman. Gardner has battled back from injuries and will provide depth in the midfield in 2008. Newcomers Carroll, Fleming and Pusateri will have their chances to impress the coaching staff and make an impact on the team as freshmen. Carroll was a member of the Charlotte United FC ‘89 Gold club team which won the 2004 State Cup while Fleming was an all-conference and all-region selection at Cardinal Gibbons High and helped the ‘89 CASL club to 2006 and 2007 state crowns. Pusateri was a member of the Bethesda Mavericks club which captured the 2007 Region I Colonial League title. “This year’s midfield will be very competitive for places,” said Powell. “We will look to find the right combination of players early so we can form a solid unit both defending and going forward.” Forwards Elon’s four forwards are comprised of one senior, one junior, one sophomore and one freshman. Senior Aaron Parker (Louisville, Ky.), junior Erfan Imeni (Burlington, N.C.) and sophomore Steven Dilger (Wake Forest, N.C.) are a solid group. Joining that group in 2008 will be freshman Denzel Ogunyase (Albany, N.Y.). Parker is the Phoenix’s second-leading returning scorer, having netted three goals and assisted on five others in 19 games as a junior. He scored one game-winning goal. His size (6-2) allows Parker to be very effective on set pieces. Imeni has come into his own and is expected to improve his scoring numbers for the Phoenix in 2008. As a sophomore, Imeni scored three times and tallied two assists on his way to loggins SoCon All-Tournament accolades. Dilger will continue to add depth to the position. Ogunyase enters the fold after being named MVP while playing at The Albany Academies where he was also an all-league pick. He has had experience by training at the Middlesbrough Academy in England and has appeared in two all-star games in two years at a national camp. Added Powell, “We have some exciting options at the forward position this year. We will see who is in form and confident in front of the goal and again, strive to find the best combination for the team.”

Darren Powell Head Coach 77-36-11 Career Record (Six Years) 27-24-8 Elon Record (Three Years) Darren Powell was hired as the head coach of the Phoenix men’s soccer program in December
of 2004. Powell came to Elon after serving four seasons as an assistant at Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro. In Powell’s three seasons at the helm of the Elon squad, the program has produced 12 AllSouthern Conference performers and a SoCon Freshman of the Year. In 2007, Powell guided the Phoenix to an 8-7-4 overall record, marking the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 1987 and 1988. Elon went 4-3-0 in SoCon play to finish tied for third. Along the way, his team earned ties with North Carolina, Clemson and eventual national champion Wake Forest. The tie with top-ranked Wake Forest provided the Demon Deacons with their first blemish of the season. Under Powell’s leadership, the Elon program claimed its first-ever NCAA Division I national ranking in 2006 – appearing as high as 22nd in the Soccer America poll on Sept. 12 after starting the campaign with a 6-1-0 ledger, including a 2-0 victory over then-No. 17 UAB. His team finished the year at 10-8-2 overall, the program’s first winning year since moving to the Division I ranks for the 1999 season. In his first season with the Phoenix, Powell led the squad to a 9-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in SoCon action, finishing third in the league. Elon emerged from that campaign with two First Team All-SoCon selections, two Second Team All-SoCon honorees, the SoCon Freshman of the Year, three SoCon Players of the Week, two SoCon All-Tournament picks, two NSCAA All-South Region players, one College Soccer News All-Freshman choice and one USL professional player. For his efforts, Powell was honored as the 2005 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. At UNCG, Powell assisted in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, scheduling and academic development. The Spartan program posted a 55-26-3 mark in his four seasons there and became the nation’s top-ranked program during the regular season in 2004. Powell was honored as one of the top NCAA Division I assistant coaches by College Soccer News and has coached three MLS players, one NSCAA Senior All-Star, three All-Americans, one Academic All-American, four All-Region honorees, 22 All-SoCon selections, two conference Freshman of the Year award winners and one league Player of the Year while at UNCG. Prior to joining the Spartan staff, Powell headed the Greensboro College program for three seasons, posting a 50-12-3 ledger. He led the Pride to the NCAA Division III finals in 1998 and Dixie Conference titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. His program produced a MLS and English Premier League player, two NSCAA Senior All-Stars, three All-Americans, 15 All-Region choices, 25 All-Dixie Conference selections, three league Players of the Year and two conference Rookies of the Year. In 1998, Powell was honored by the NSCAA as the South Region Coach of the Year after being named the Dixie Conference Coach of the Year. The Pride finished ranked second in the nation in 1998, eighth in the country in 1999 and 12th nationally in 2000. Powell played professionally for the Carolina Dynamo USISL team, the Raleigh Flyers A-League team and the Wilmington Hammerheads USISL team from 1995-1999. Powell is also heavily involved in youth soccer in North Carolina. He serves as a staff coach at the Greensboro Soccer Club and has been a North Carolina ODP head coach for the past six years. Powell also works as a staff coach with the USYSA Region III ODP team and holds a USSF A-License. Powell graduated from UNC Greensboro in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in leisure studies where he helped the Spartans make two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was a two-time captain, team MVP and All-South Region selection as well as a three-time All-Big South Conference honoree. Jason O’Keefe Assistant Coach Jason O’Keefe joined coach Darren Powell’s staff in Feb. of 2007 after serving as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati for the 2006 season. He has also spent time at Wake Forest University and Greensboro College as an assistant. In his first season with the Phoenix, the program posted an 8-7-4 overall record to post Elon’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 1987 and 1988. O’Keefe helped the Bearcats to an 11-6-2 overall record and a Big East regular season title in 2006. Cincinnati also participated in the 2006 NCAA College Cup, falling to Northwestern University in the first round. Prior to joining the staff at Cincinnati, O’Keefe worked as an assistant at Wake Forest for three seasons. During his time with the Demon Deacons, the program compiled a 13-8-2 overall record and reached the third round of the NCAA College Cup in 2005. Wake Forest went 42-18-4 during O’Keefe’s tenure. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Greensboro, his alma mater. During his time with the Pride, Greensboro captured three consecutive regular season and tournament titles and was ranked in the NCAA-III top-10 all three years. O’Keefe joined the Greensboro staff in 2000 when Powell hired him to his staff in his final year with the Pride. O’Keefe, who holds a USSF “A” license and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, was a North Carolina ODP staff coach and head coach of the Carolina Dynamo of the Super Y-League from 2002-06. He also coached the Super Y-League South Atlantic Regional team from 2004-06. O’Keefe is also involved in youth soccer and currently serves as the director of coaching for the local Burlington Soccer Club. O’Keefe graduated from Greensboro in 1997 with a degree in history and education. He played for the Pride from 1992-1996, helping the team to three NCAA-III Tournament appearances, a 1994 conference title and a 1996 South Region championship. Powell on O’Keefe: “Jason continues to work hard at all aspects of our program. He has offered our group some great insight. He is an asset to this coaching staff and Elon athletics.” Joe Crump Assistant Coach/Goalkeepers Coach Joe Crump, in his second year with the Phoenix program, serves as the squad’s goalkeepers coach. In his first season at Elon, the program posted an 8-7-4 overall record to post its first backto-back winning seasons since 1987 and 1988. Under his guidance, Elon true freshman goalkeeper Clint Irwin claimed All-SoCon honors and Phoenix keepers combined to help lead the program to a school-record four consecutive shutouts in 2007. Crump played for coach Darren Powell at UNC Greensboro as a three-year starting goalie. He has also been a North Carolina ODP staff member and goalkeepers coach for Triangle United. Crump assisted the Region III champions and USYSA National Finalists. The 2003 UNCG graduate holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and is a USSF licensed coach. Last year, the Elon men’s soccer team hosted its fourth annual match that benefited The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The first of these matches came in 2004 when the Phoenix hosted the then-defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. A silent auction was held to raise money for The V Foundation featuring items from MLS teams, collegiate programs, NFL teams and The V Foundation to name a few. In 2008, the Phoenix will continue to help raise money for The V Foundation to assist in the fight against cancer. This year’s match will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 against Duke and will be played in Rhodes Stadium.
Why Elon?: I chose Elon because I was very impressed with the beautiful campus, prestigious academic status and mentoring relationships within the community. I also wanted to continue to play soccer and compete at a Division I level program. I am very impressed with the soccer program and how the staff has developed the team.

Elon in the Pros
Anthony Catalano
Following the 2005 season, defender Anthony Catalano became the first Phoenix men’s soccer player to sign a professional contract. Catalano inked with the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division. He made his professional debut on Sunday, June 11, 2006 against the Puerto Rico Islanders. Catalano currently plays for the Richmond Kickers of the USL Second Division. He is in his first season with the Kickers. Kiki Willis, the 2005 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, signed a developmental contract with D.C. United of Major League Soccer following the 2006 season.

The Elon Phoenix men’s soccer program posted a successful 2007 campaign, finishing the year with an 8-7-4 overall record and a 4-3-0 slate in Southern Conference play. It marked the second consecutive winning season for the Phoenix. Coach Darren Powell’s squad finished in a tie for third place in the SoCon and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals for the second time in three years. Elon ended the regular season with a ninth-place ranking in the South Region.
Justin Wyatt
Three Phoenix players were honored by the league with First Team All-SoCon accolades – senior forward Brett Paschall, sophomore midfielder Justin Wyatt and sophomore defender Steven Kinney. Elon also landed one player on the second team in freshman goalkeeper Clint Irwin. Two players, sophomore midfielder Erfan Imeni and junior defender Will Mason, were honored for their performances during the SoCon Tournament with all-tournament recognition. Following the year, Wyatt and Kinney were selected as NSCAA All-South team members. Those two players, along with Paschall earned all-state honors. Paschall concluded his collegiate career by leaving his mark on the Elon record book. He became just the second Elon men’s soccer player to claim ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors as he earned second team distinction. He also ended up ranking second with 64 career points among Elon’s all-time leaders. He also finished in the program’s career top-five players in goals (fifth with 24) and assists (tied for fifth with 16). Wyatt led the Phoenix with nine goals while Paschall added seven scores and led the team with six assists. Each was honored once during the season as SoCon Player of the Week – Wyatt on Oct. 2 and Paschall on Oct. 22. Paschall was also named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 3. Following a 1-2-1 start to the season, the Phoenix began a string of four consecutive shutouts to establish a new school record. The shutout streak began with a 0-0 tie against UNC Wilmington. Elon then dispatched Mount St. Mary’s, UNC Asheville and league foe Georgia Southern – all by 2-0 scores. The Phoenix earned a hard-fought 1-1 tie at Clemson before blanking Davidson 2-0 to run its unbeaten streak to six games. A visit to then-#1 Wake Forest awaited the squad next. Elon grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first half only to see the Demon Deacons put one on the board in the second half. The teams would remain tied as Elon handed Wake Forest the first blemish of its previously unbeaten and untied season. A 4-0 victory over Appalachian State saw Elon’s unbeaten streak reach eight games, three shy of the school record. The Phoenix then hit the road for a conference match at College of Charleston. The Cougars snapped the unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win over the Phoenix. Elon returned home to battle North Carolina and fought the Tar Heels to a 1-1 tie in Rhodes Stadium in front of a program-record crowd of 1,773 fans in the fourth annual Match to Benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Phoenix followed that match up with a 4-1 SoCon victory at Wofford and improved to 7-3-4 overall and 4-1-0 in league play. At this point, Elon went on a bit of a skid, dropping its final three regular season contests, including league games at then-#18 Furman (2-1) and at home against UNC Greensboro (3-0). The loss to UNCG marked the Phoenix’s only home defeat of the year as the squad finished 6-1-1 at Elon in 2007. The Phoenix entered the SoCon Tournament as the fourth seed and hosted fifth-seeded Appalachian State in the first round, going on to knock off the Mountaineers for the second time with a 2-0 victory. Elon then advanced to the semifinals to face top-seeded and 22nd-ranked Furman. The Paladins jumped on top 1-0 with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Phoenix knotted the game at 1-1 with just over 15 minutes left in regulation only to see Furman score just four minutes later and hold off a late Elon attack. The 2-1 defeat concluded the Phoenix’s season. In 2007, the Phoenix drew a school-record 630 fans per home date.
