ELON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field. Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achievements in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

DAVE BLANK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign.What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Academic Support Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)

All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in the AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in the AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both day time and night time options are available to complete monitored study hours.

Life Skills In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, run by studnet-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

Registration Services All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation requirements. Student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as inseason versus out out-of-season scheduling.

Academic Success Phoenix athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Last year, Elon landed two ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmericans and saw 57 student-athletes earn Academic AllSouthern Conference honors.

Strength & Conditioning

The Elon University strength and conditioning program is based on hard work and competition. The belief being that athletes do not just become strong, but physically and mentally tough. Athletes must work hard each and every day to attain their goals, realizing that the team that works the hardest usually wins. So, the strength and conditioning coaches strive to instill the characteristics of a champion: dedication, sacrifice and toughness. It is the job of the Elon strength and conditioning program to ensure that every time an athlete leaves a training session, he or she has become both physically and mentally tougher. Each staff member is dedicated to every athlete. The main objectives are maximizing an athlete’s potential and preventing injury. Safety is a major concern and will never be sacrificed to lift more weight. Proper techniques for spotting and performing the lifts are taught before an athlete begins training. As athletes learn how to work harder and compete at a higher level, their team, the department and the university will become stronger and take one more step toward being champions.

The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State University recently captured three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

2009 Season Outlook

Returning eight of his 10 players – including five of his six starters – from last season’s Southern Conference regular season and tournament runner-up squad, fifth-year Elon head men’s tennis coach Michael Leonard is anxious to see his Phoenix in action in 2009. Over the past three campaigns, Elon has won 24 of its 27 SoCon regular season matches and six of its eight SoCon tournament contests en route to claiming two regular season championships and a tournament title. Leonard’s team forged a 17-9 record – including a win over nationally-ranked Princeton – despite sporting four freshmen in its six singles positions and playing 10 matches against foes that spent time in the national rankings in 2008. Elon extended its winning streaks to 30 consecutive home matches and 18 straight SoCon regular season contests before watching both streaks come to an end. “We are very excited about the strong schedule we have put together for this spring,” Leonard said. “In addition to our challenging Southern Conference schedule, we will face numerous nonconference teams – Duke, South Carolina, Old Dominion and Clemson – that were nationally ranked last year. First and foremost, we are anxiously looking forward to hosting the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center in April. This is the first Southern Conference championship event to be held on the Elon campus in any sport.” The 10-player Phoenix roster in 2009 consists of senior captain Kevin Beard (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic), freshman Alex Crockford (London, England/Bradfield), senior captain Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale), sophomore Chase Helpingstine (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), junior captain Clark Howell (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons), freshman Carlin Murray (Philadelphia, Pa./ Haverford), sophomore Philip Nemec (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/ Alberta Distance Learning), sophomore Oscar Podlewski (London, England/Nebraska Independent Study), sophomore Alberto Rojas (Atlatlahucan, Mexico/Colegio Nacional de Matematicas) and sophomore Cody Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C./Carolina Day). “We started four freshmen in the singles lineup last year,” Leonard said.“We are really anxious to see what they can do this season with a year of experience at this level under their belts. We are also very excited about the addition of our two new freshmen, Carlin and Alex.” A cornerstone for Elon at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles throughout his career, Gooch enters the spring season ranked a program-record No. 6 in the NCAA Division I Mideast Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. One of the most decorated tennis players in Phoenix history, he is a two-year captain, a twotime team MVP, a three-time First Team All-SoCon singles and doubles player, a four-time SoCon Player of the Week and a three-time SoCon Player of the Month. Gooch advanced to the ITA Mideast Regional Championship semifinals in October, marking the best finish ever in the tournament by an Elon player. He fashioned a winning 13-12 singles mark in duals last spring despite battling many of the country’s top players. For his career, Gooch has compiled an impressive 47-21 dual match record the past three years. Podlewski tallied a 16-8 ledger in duals at No. 2 singles last year on his way to collecting SoCon February Athlete of the Month accolades and SoCon Freshman of the Year honors. He enters the spring schedule ranked No. 120 in the country. Rojas registered a 13-10 slate at No. 4 singles and a 16-6 doubles record in dual match action a year ago en route to earning Second Team All-SoCon recognition. Nemec, the SoCon January Athlete of the Month, posted a 15-9 record in duals at No. 5 singles last year. The No. 1 doubles team of Gooch and Nemec put up a 13-6 mark on its way to logging First Team All-SoCon laurels. The Gooch/Nemec duo enters the spring ranked No. 14 in the Mideast Region and No. 49 in the nation. Head Coach • 5th Season 2006 & 2007 Southern Conference Coach of the Year

Michael Leonard is in his fifth year as the Elon University head men’s tennis coach. His remarkable four-year run has seen the Phoenix rise from a winless Southern Conference campaign his first year to a pair of SoCon championship seasons and a league runner-up finish. Leonard’s teams have amassed an impressive 64-34 record (.653) in dual matches – highlighted by a sizzling 59-17 overall ledger (.776) and an astounding 24-3 SoCon slate (.889) over the past three years – while establishing Elon as a perennial SoCon power. For his efforts, he was recognized as the SoCon Coach of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Leonard guided the Phoenix to a 17-9 mark – 7-2 in the league – en route to finishing second in the conference in both the regular season and the league tournament despite relying on four freshmen in the six singles spots. Damon Gooch, one of Leonard’s first recruits, reached No. 72 in the national rankings – the highest ITA rating ever achieved by an Elon player at the NCAA Division I level. Gooch went on to earn First Team All-SoCon status in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive year while Philip Nemec (first team), Mason Schermerhorn (second team) and Alberto Rojas (second team) all collected all-conference laurels for their performances in doubles. Meanwhile, Oscar Podlewski became the Phoenix’s second SoCon Freshman of the Year in three seasons. In 2007, Leonard led Elon to its first-ever SoCon Tournament championship in any sport, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Fashioning an overall 23-3 record, Elon surpassed its 1990 NAIA Division I national championship team (22-3) as the winningest squad in Phoenix men’s tennis history. Leonard was a junior playing at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles on the 1990 team. Of the 2007 squad’s 23 wins, 13 were decided in shutout fashion. Elon ended up ranked No. 44 in the country. The 2007 season also saw the Phoenix forge a perfect 12-0 mark against SoCon opponents with sole setbacks coming to nationally-ranked foes Clemson, Duke and Wake Forest. Elon’s 14-match winning streak entering NCAA tournament action marked the program’s longest streak since the 1993 squad won 17 matches in a row. The Phoenix finished 3-3 against nationally-ranked teams and 20-0 against unranked programs. Gooch and Anuwat Dalodom were named to the First Team All-SoCon in singles. The Gooch/Schermerhorn duo landed first team status in doubles while Gustaf Asplund and Austin Fenn achieved second team distinction in singles. Leonard led Elon from a last-place finish in the SoCon in 2005 to a share of first place in 2006 and the outright title in 2007. The remarkable turn-around saw the Phoenix go from 5-17 overall and 0-10 in the SoCon in 2005 to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in the SoCon in 2006 with a senior-less squad. Under Leonard’s tutelage in 2006, Gooch earned SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades and was honored with Elon’s first-ever national ranking among NCAA Division I players at No. 120. Gooch and partner Fenn earned the program’s first NCAA-I doubles ranking of No. 77 and were honored with First Team All-SoCon status in doubles play. Gooch also received First Team All-SoCon accolades in singles. The 2006 squad also became the first Elon men’s tennis team to receive the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Award. Malasitt (2005), Kyle Smialek (2005,2007), Alex Garrett (2006), Asplund (2007), Sebastian Bredberg (2007), Kevin Colin (2007), Gooch (2007), Kevin Beard (2008) and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell (2008) have all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction during Leonard’s tenure. In his first season at Elon, Leonard coached First Team All-SoCon selection and ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American Pramote Malasitt to Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete honors in 2005, recognizing him as the Elon athlete of the year. Malasitt was dubbed First Team All-SoCon in both singles and doubles (with Fenn). Prior to coaching the Phoenix, Leonard served as the Tennis Director at the Raleigh Racquet Club (1995-2004) in Raleigh, N.C., where he was in charge of one of the largest junior programs in the South with nearly 200 juniors. He was also responsible for coordinating and implementing clinics, facilitating tennis and social activities for members and handling all financial operations of the tennis program. During his tenure, Leonard coached many nationally-ranked juniors, including two national champions. A 1991 Elon graduate, Leonard was named all-conference and all-district during each of his four years of competition. In 1991, he was tabbed the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and earned Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete honors. An NAIA All-American in both 1990 and 1991, he was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Leonard continued his playing career after his college days, becoming the North Carolina state champion in 1992 and earning a No. 1 ranking in the North Carolina Men’s Open Division. Assistant Coach • 9th Season

Bob Owens is in his ninth season as the assistant coach for the Phoenix tennis programs. Under Michael Leonard, Owens has been instrumental in helping the Elon men’s tennis team become one of the top SoCon programs for the past three seasons. His infinite positive energy and passion are always felt and used by each team member. This was specifically evident in when he Phoenix men’s sqaud swept the SoCon regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. A long-time tennis coach at nearby Northeast Guilford High School, Owens worked closely with former Phoenix head coach Tom Parham for more than 20 years and now serves as an assistant to head coaches Leonard and Elizabeth Anderson.

A six-time Triad 3A Conference Coach of the Year, Owens has been both a tennis and football coach for more than 25 years. Owens has coached two 3A state champion doubles teams, as well as his son, who was a state runner-up in singles. He was once one of the 12 finalists for the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Award. Owens is currently a member of the United States Tennis Association. Owens graduated from Guilford College and was a two-time AllAmerican in football. He then began a professional career with the Philadelphia Bell of the Old World Football League before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles and playing two seasons. He and his wife, Wanda, have three adult children - twin sons, Todd and Jay, and a daughter, Amber and grandchild Brody.

The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center In 1987, Dr. James Powell and his wife, Anne, presented Elon University with a major challenge gift for the construction of an on-campus, 12-court, lighted tennis facility. The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center consists of 12 hard courts separated into bays of three courts each. The court bays are captured by a 10-foot high, vinyl-coated fence fitted with nine-foot polypropylene wind screens. Evening tennis is made possible with low-level lighting. Each court is equipped with a state-ofthe-art intercom system. Located at the center of the tennis complex is a two-story pavilion that houses a storage area, a concession stand and a viewing deck. From the viewing deck, competition can be observed in any direction, as well as the beautifully landscaped area between the courts. Shrubs and flowerbeds complement the permanent bleachers next to the two stadium courts, which honey locust trees help to shade the grassy seating area. In the summer of 2008, all 12 courts were resurfaced.
