GLOBAL INTEREST Four years ago Dr. Beth Warner’s Working with Groups and Communities service-learning class conducted a neighborhood survey that revealed unmet needs. Since then, Elon faculty and students have helped create an advisory board and secured a state grant for improvements such as street lighting, walking trails, outdoor exercise equipment and a dance studio. John Tumbleston ‘06, a postdoctoral researcher at North Carolina State University, is focused on a green energy project to create materials and devices that can absorb sunlight to convert into electricity. He’s committed to academic

work that will make a tangible difference in the lives of future generations.

Global Interest The International Studies major provides a broad knowledge of international affairs and empowers students to become experts on one of the world’s regions. Study abroad and foreign language are key, and students have considerable freedom to design their studies. Students often double major in fields such as political science, history and foreign languages.

Elon College offers programs in eight languages and emphasizes comprehension within cultural context. Foreign language living-learning communities and language clubs are great ways to immerse yourself in your chosen field. Merveilleux! Arabic Studies and Middle East Studies promote a deeper understanding of regional issues and perspectives. Supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program, the programs include enhanced foreign language offerings and study abroad opportunities in the region.

Interdisciplinary Integration Collaboration is key in the arts and sciences. What do we mean? Here’s an example: the Environmental Studies program offers students a core of classes focused on ecological understanding. The program’s strength is considering the environment from many perspectives, such as discussing water resources in science, social science and humanities classes. Students use that knowledge to further careers in any number of fields. The Department of Foreign Languages

and Elon’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business collaborated to create the Business German program, which connects the study of German language and culture with post-graduation career opportunities. The program features an online component as well as biweekly labs to provide face-to-face support. Learn more: www.elon.edu/ businessgerman. Prelaw and Pre-Health Professions advising programs help you get into graduate programs in fields such as law, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Both programs offer opportunities to meet

professionals in the field. Study abroad meets field research. Dr. Rissa Trachman, sociology and anthropology, developed an anthropological field school in the Eastern Petén Forest of Northwestern Belize, where she takes Elon students for summer research. “It’s a little different from most study abroad programs because it is an actual field school. Rather than going to different places and seeing different archaeological sites and learning about them, students come to Belize with me to conduct handson research.”

Gloria and her mentor, Dr. Ken Hassell, art, pose in front of one of her photos taken during an internship in Lithuania. She found the internship through the Isabella Cannon Center for Leadership and plans to use imagery in her major.

HIGH ACADMIC STANDARDS High Academic Standards Elon College students are academically talented and intellectually curious. They pursue a broad range of scholarly interests and find success in professions and graduate schools across the country and around the world. For an additional challenge, consider the Elon College Fellows Program. Fifty Fellows are selected each year based on their high school academic performance, interviews and essay. All Fellows receive a $1,000 Elon Experiences grant, research support

and a $4,500 scholarship. Learn more and apply: www.elon.edu/fellows. Dr. Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler, psychology, serves as a mentor to students developing research interests. She includes students in her research and collaborates with alumni on published work. Each spring, Elon devotes an entire day to SURF (Spring Undergraduate Research Forum), an event during which hundreds of students and faculty present original research. Elon hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious

academic honor society. Only about 10 percent of colleges and universities in the U.S. shelter Phi Beta Kappa chapters. Elon College alumni achieve and succeed across the professional spectrum. Graduates work with organizations such as the Smithsonian Institute, SAS Institute, Inc., the Peace Corps, the Oakland Museum of California, Credit Suisse, Teach for America and the U.S. Census Bureau. Alumni also pursue graduate degrees at institutions including the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, Duke University and American University.

79% of recent graduates undertook at least one internship.

46% of Elon students hold at least one leadership position before graduating.

ACADEMIC DISCOVERY “Elon prepared me for my professional life by giving me a broad background. As CEO you deal with a lot of people, and nothing makes a person feel more appreciated than when they see you know about their culture or background. I know for instance about Hinduism because I took that in my years at Elon.”

The Elon College faculty believe scholarship and teaching are inseparable because scholarship is the foundation of teaching. They share their knowledge in publications, presentations at national and international conferences and in their daily interactions with students. Like all Elon College faculty, Dr. Ben Evans, physics, is a teacher and a mentor. He co-authored a manuscript with three Elon students, worked with students as they presented at the annual meeting of the Biophysical Society and mentored

Elon’s campus is designed for academic discovery. Students learn and explore in high-tech spaces such as McMichael Science Center, which is being renovated for three new teaching labs and classrooms for environmental science, engineering and biology.
