on a Journey Elon’s academic programs integrate rigorous coursework with hands-on experiences and mentoring relationships. The goal is to promote personal and professional growth, helping you gain a deeper understanding of our world and the role you can play in building a brighter future.

Studies in the arts and sciences provide an excellent framework for a lifetime of professional success and personal fulfillment. All Elon students are introduced to the arts and sciences through the Elon Core Curriculum, which spans all four years of your college career. In addition, two-thirds of students graduate with at least one major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences. As part of the Elon Curriculum, in the first year you will take courses in writing and mathematics as well as Elon’s signature course, “The Global Experience,” a seminar that examines global citizenship from a variety of academic disciplines. As an Elon College student, you’ll thrive on collaborations with faculty mentors both in and out of the classroom. Immersive experiences in research, global study, internships, service and leadership deepen the traditional classroom lessons and prepare you to become an ethical and ambitious leader in your chosen field. Surveys of employers consistently stress the need for intercultural skills, ethical reasoning and a desire and ability to pursue lifelong learning. The full Elon College experience—arts and sciences foundations, disciplinary knowledge, and mentored co-curricular experiences—ensures you will possess those skills and, in addition, join a tight-knit alumni network that spans the globe.

The dual-degree experience helped me to not only become a well-rounded engineer but also a great communicator. The arts and sciences component is not something an engineering student may be encouraged to explore at another university and I’ve found it invaluable in my career.” Ashley Davis ’08, associate director of health economics at RTI Health Solutions

I never planned to work in biotech or on cancer vaccines. My interest in chemistry and immunology came together at Elon and drove me to my Ph.D. project and ultimately led me on this path.” Geoffrey Lynn ’07, a biomedical scientist who is co-developing a personalized cancer vaccine and co-founded Avidea Technologies, where he is chief executive officer

B.S. in Engineering Elon offers a four-year degree in engineering in addition to a dual-degree program.

Elon hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. Only about 10% of colleges and universities in the U.S. shelter Phi Beta Kappa chapters. These chapters select only 10% of their arts and sciences graduates to join.

Bring Your Big Ideas

TO LIFE Elon College includes 20 academic departments organized into three branches.

Students in the Arts & Humanities explore the breadth and depth of human creativity and experience. Their work is published, performed and exhibited on campus, at national conferences and in international journals. Students create immersive art experiences, work within nine language programs and are leaders on the screen and in recording studios. Graduates act on Broadway, perform in TV and film, write for major publications, and attend graduate school at institutions including University of California – Berkeley, New York University and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Natural, Mathematical & Computing Sciences students explore both the abstract and concrete structures of the universe. They frequently collaborate with faculty on multi-year research projects such as Elon BrainCARE, an ongoing initiative focused on concussions. Students are also actively involved in research related to sustainable food production, environmental studies and green architecture, and use the Elon Forest and Loy Farm as rich resources for hands-on learning.

Students studying the Social & Behavioral Sciences focus on human behavior and human relationships to understand social life and culture, including problems faced by humankind in the past, present and future. Active learning opportunities include the Elon Poll, where students conduct surveys on important economic and political issues in North Carolina and beyond. Poll results have appeared in The New York Times and The Washington Post, as well as on CNN and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Students also conduct anthropological fieldwork in Belize, study abroad in the Middle East or engage in interdisciplinary projects focused on social and cultural human interaction in North Carolina.

While at Elon, I had the opportunity to participate in Elon BrainCARE, which focuses on concussion research and education. The experience helped develop my passion for science and provided an opportunity for me to lead my own research project, which I presented at local and national conferences.” Lauren Brown ’17, earned an M.S. in Exercise Science from University of Georgia in 2019 and is attending medical school at Medical College of Georgia
