A sustanable and anthropic system

Team Lucy Walker 27th oct 2014

Penelope’s tapestry

2

An evolving territory, made of crossed and connected events With time, anthropic and natural evolution processes built systems in the valley. They also convert (or even destroy) those systems, with the evolution necessity. The metaphor of Penelope’s tapestry could help showing this process. Weaving and unweaving the territory systems, is the way we see the valley’s evolution. Taking responsibility for that moving system, we use it a soft-acting and time-considering project.

«Penelope and the Suitors» John William Waterhouse 1912

1. Three words to guide our vision

3

1.1 Global vision

1.2 Specific

1.3 Modest

We think that this region could and should be more and more connected with global context in the future. ÂŤThe world valleyÂť...

Despite that strong link with its surrounding, the valley should define and keep its identity. All the more since the perturbations about to come during the next century.

We believe that a perennial and long-term project relies more on small and adaptable actions, than on big-scale and heavy layingouts. It takes in account the grounding context (local and ancestral civilisation) and natural ecosystem. Acting softly and in an adaptative way.

2. Our four criterias for a good selection of actions

4

2.1 Multifunctional 2.2 Changing

2.3 Involving

2.4 Connected

2.1 The actions that we will propose should be useful to different uses, people, purposes. This would enable an optimised resources consumption, as well as the crossing of different energies and processes of development.

New paradigm : see the inhabitants of the valley as the first actors of their development. Propose them a set of simple, accessible actions. See the tourists as much more than passing consumers ; make them partners, workers of the valley. Make them ...family.

Develop the villages and the valley by considering that they can do it better by learning from the others. Bright up the local knowledge and culture as well ; ÂŤstudents can be teachers tooÂť.

2.2 Inspired by nature, the structures can evolve from a shape/use, to a new one. Evolution can be transformation or also moving to a more adapted place.

3.Care of older people 4.Call to youth to come back/

3 Windows to the future

3.1 Climat Change According to The Advisory Body on Climat Change (OcCC), by 2050, the areacovered by alpin glaciers will have dininished by about 3/4 in the case of medium warming. What would happen with the 120 millions tourists who visit the alps every year? We have to base our idears on a durable element.

6

3.2 Durable tourism workshop and woofing

focus education on natural and traditional setting

local transportation

natural welness

Old hous renovation

As a prevention and an answer to this climat change, we will propose solutions based on durable recources. New generation tourist will come to learn about what nature has to offer. Let the Verbier tourists in Verbier and create a new pole of attractivity with what nature has to offer in this valley region.

4.5 The Market Train A train that is transformed on a Market. It will drive between villages on the main railway. It starts in Martigny and stop 2 hours in every villages. So people have time to sale their own products and buy other that they need. It is a way of combining mobility and shopping all along the valley. Share products!! Save infrastructure!! And propose a new way of shopping!!

In the idea of population increase think of rise in high as if it was already be done here to maintain the duality between landscape and built environment that together generate the local attractivness.
