WHAT IS THE EU?

The European Union (EU) is a political andeconomic union of 28 member states that are located in Europe.

HISTORY

1945-1969 

The European Union was set up with the aim of ending the bloody wars of the Second World War.

In1950, the European Coal and Steel Community began to unite European countries.

The six founding countries were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

The 1960s is a good period for the economy because they control food production, so that everybody has enough to eat.


1970-1989 

In 1973 Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom join the European Union.

More years later, they start creating jobs and infrastructures in poorer areas.

In 1981, Greece join the EU, and Spain and Portugal follow five years later.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall was pulled down and the border between East and West Germany was opened. This leads to the reunification of Germany.


1990-2009 

People are concerned about how to protect the environment and also how Europeans can act together when it comes to security and defence matters.

The euro is now the new currency for many Europeans. During the decade more and more countries adopt the euro.

When Alcaeda attacked New York, EU countries began to work more closely together to fight crime.


2010-TODAY 

The global economic crisis struck hard in Europe. The EU helped several countries to confront their difficulties.

Climate change was high and leaders agreed to reduce harmful emissions.

In 2012, the European Union is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.


EU STRUCTURE AND INSTITUTIONS


EUROPEAN PARLAMENT 

Composed by 751 representatives

They approve or reject acts, budgets and also they control other institutions for the european union.

It is directly elected by EU voters every 5 years.

The meetings take place in Estrasburgo or Bruselas


COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION 

There are represented the national governments of the 27 states.

Only the ministers go to the meeting.

Heads of the government decide the general policy direction of the union.


EUROPEAN COMMISSION 

They are in charge of proposing the legislations,defend of the union treatment and the every day work of the EU.

It´s the civil service of the EU


COURT OF JUSTICE 

Composed by 27 judges and 8 lawyers.

They are in charge of applying the new laws of the EU.


COURT OF ACCOUNTS 

Composed by 27 members.

They control the good administration of the money.


EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK 

It is the most important bancary institution.

They control the functioning of the Euro.

Their aim is not to rise the product prices.


OBJECTIVES 

To create an area of ​freedom, security and justice without internal borders.

To develop an internal free market.

To create a highly competitive social market economy

Promotion of peace and the well being of the EU´s citizens

To promote scientific and technological progress


EUROREGIONS 

Euroregions are transnational cooperation structures that are located in the borders of different european countries.

There are 86 euroregions in total.

Most of them have little political power.
