Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) By Ade Lewis

The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme forms part of the Construction Skills (CITB) Site Safety Plus range of courses which are highly regarded within the construction industry and recognised as being the highest standard of qualification for SSSTS Training.

The SSSTS training is a 2 day course targeted at site supervisors who deal with day-to-day Health and Safety concerns on-site and are looking for the information and knowledge needed to comply with their health and safety responsibilities. The qualification meets the specification detailed within the UKCG (formerly MCG) "Supervisor Training Standard" which is a requirement for all supervisors employed on UKCG members' sites.

This two day course provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively. Candidates should be either already in or due to acquire supervisory responsibilities and the course aims to provide supervisors with the relevant knowledge and skills required to supervise sites safely.

The training covers a wide variety of health and safety aspects relating specifically to the site mangers role including: • The supervisor's role • Health & Safety Law & Enforcement • Safe Systems of Work • Risk Assessment & Method Statements • Principles of Prevention • Health & Safety Management • Performance Measurement • Permit Systems

• Fire Prevention & Control • Occupational Health (Noise, Vibration, Asbestos etc) • Hazardous Substances (COSHH) • Presentation of Toolbox Talks • CDM (Construction Design & Management Regulations) • Working at Height • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) • Manual Handling • Accidents & First Aid • Behaviour & Intervention Skills

To qualify for the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) accreditation, course candidates are required to pass and end of course examination as well as continuous assessment through interactive sessions. Certification is valid for 5 years, however there are likely to be continuing changes in legislation, environmental management and technology so it is recommended that refresher courses are undertaken within 3 years of completing the original course.

This course should not be confused with the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course which is a 5 day training course specifically aimed at site managers, agents and those who are responsible for the controlling, monitoring, planning, organising or administering groups of workforce and staff. It is appropriate for those people hoping to develop an in depth social, moral and legal appreciation of their role and also instructs attendees how they should manage on site health and safety requirements in accordance with current laws.
