Most important thing in your effort to position high your web site in Google and other search engines rankings is to build backlinks. Each link that points to your web page from any other page on the internet is counted as vote for your site in the eyes of Google. Google is basing its entire ranking algorithm on number of incoming links to a web page. But of course, not all backlinks are counted the same. Google value more quality over quantity.
If you want to be successful in your link building effort, then you should choose only quality sites that are relevant to your web site. In that way, all your backlinks will be counted as a quality backlinks and only in that way they will help your web site to gain that so desired high rank.

Many Internet Marketers are asking question on how it is possible that web site with only twenty or so backlinks are holding first position in Google, and their site with thousands of backlinks is no where near top 20. Well, now you have an answer. It is big mistake to build as many inbound links as you can, without considering their quality.
If you build many backlinks from spam sites, Google will also see your web page as potentially spam and put some penalty on it, because it is in "bad neighborhood". And when your site is penalized for any reason, it is very hard to reverse that penalty, and definitely, it will take some effort to do that.
