November Traditions in the Eastern Sierra 2022 National American Indian Heritage Month, Bishop’s Fall Highball Craggin’ Classic, and Veterans Day begin the seasonal celebrations By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

November is National Native American Heritage Month, and it pays tribute to the rich ancestry, traditions and cultures of Native Americans.

Eastern Sierra, CA—November is a month of many traditions and celebrations honoring heritage, gratefulness, and in the Eastern Sierra, it’s a month of transition, from autumn days to frosty and snowy nights. Today, Bishop’s Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center (provides active repatriation through Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and Independence’s Eastern California Museum have exhibits and collections which highlight these Native American heritage and cultural resources. Federally recognized California tribes include: Death Valley Timbisha Shoshone; Lone Pine; Fort Independence; Big Pine; Bishop; Benton Paiute; Mono; Bridgeport, and Woodford Colony. Widely known for their tool making (very respected arrowhead makers), and extraordinarily skilled at basketry, the Eastern California tribes continue these heritage skills today, using seeds, berries, tubers, roots, and the SEE ON PAGE 8

Bishop’s Fall Highball Craggin’ Classic climbing festival is back in action, November 11-13, hosted by the American Alpine Club, and lots of top brand climbing sponsors, this festival takes participants in climbing clinics to the world-famous Buttermilks. Seen here are the Peabody Boulders in the Buttermilks, Grandma Peabody (left) and Grandpa Peabody (right), iconic, 55-foot tall, granite forces from nature, which present hundreds of complex climbing / bouldering problems at various ratings of difficulty. The hills come alive, with the sounds of climbers at play, on belay.... Photos by The Hired Pen

Veterans Day, A day to thank our country’s veterans Veterans’ Day, Friday, November 11, at 11 a.m., is a perfect day and time to pay our respects, and thank those who have served. On Veterans’ Day, we as a nation stand proudly in respect of our country’s veterans. Services are observed throughout the Eastern Sierra region, and locally, many of the veterans’ service groups hold formal ceremonies, with families, friends, and neighbors sharing in the annual, national tradition. Veterans Day is Friday, November 11, at 11 a.m., and throughout the country, people say, “Thank you for your service,” to our nation’s veterans of all wars. Join a ceremony in your hometown, or observe a moment of thanks, during the day.

World War I, fell on November 11, 1918. Later, in 1954, the 83rd U.S. Congress enacted Veterans Day (June 1, 1954) to include and honor American veterans of all wars. November 11-17th is “National Veterans Awareness Week.” It is worth noting: Both retail and restaurant discounts / freebies occur on Veterans Day, and the days before and after. (Source: www.military.com) Bishop’s Fall Highball Craggin’ Classic The small town of Bishop, CA becomes a mecca for the climbing community, when the Fall Highball Craggin’ Classic comes to the Eastern Sierra. This year, November 11-13, the American Alpine Club hosts this annual climbing festival, which brings thousands of visitors and participants to one of the most famous climbing regions in the world. Highlights of this event include: the entire town of Bishop as the festival events unfold, including the Vendor Village (Whitney Alley), live music and food (Mountain Rambler Brewery and Owens Valley Distillery), films at the Bishop Twin Theatre, artisan markets, the Cutest Crag Dog Contest, Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association’s coffee meeting on Saturday morning, 8-10 a.m., at “The Pit,” yoga in Bishop’s City Park, and many participants heading for the Buttermilks, Happy and Sad Bouldering areas on the Volcanic Tablelands, and stewardship programs throughout the festival. AkaMya, a Native American culture dance group, with Sage Romero, a Paiute and Taos Pueblo Native American, is another festival highlight to respect and enjoy.

High school students at Owens Valley School in Independence and Bishop Union High School in Bishop, along with elementary school students from the Bishop After School Program and elementary and middle school students from Bishop Indian Education Center, joined the challenge during the week of October 24. According to Greene, it really is the effort that counts more than the actual number of pushups completed although he does encourage students to stick to it. “What I’m hoping to see are some of the kids who were struggling on Day 1 being able to do all 22 on Day 22,” he said. Greene said he and HHS Prevention Specialist Micala Muro visit each school or program once a week, doing pushups alongside the students. Created by the veteran non-profit organization Honor Courage Commitment, Inc., the #22PushupChallenge has in years past gone viral on the internet and social media platforms, similar to the ALS IceBucketChallenge from 2014, with celebrities, influencers, and others posting videos and photos of them participating in the challenge. Greene encourages anyone interested to take the challenge themselves. The more participation, the more awareness that’s spread about a serious issue. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention advocates for implementation of evidence-based clinical interventions focused specifically on suicide prevention, but also recognizes there must be a fully engaged nation if prevention efforts are to be successful. “…(W)e need everyone at the table, leveraging work within and outside of clinical health care delivery systems to decrease both individual and societal risk factors for suicide,” the 2022 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report states. “The public health approach reminds us that what we do can and does make a difference.” There are a wide variety mental health and social services available to veterans through the Veterans Administration. For more information, visit https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/suicide_prevention/data.asp. If you or a veteran you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1. For more information about services for veterans in Inyo County, or to speak with VSO Greene, call (760) 873-7850 or visit https://www.inyocounty.us/ services/veteran-services.

INDEPENDENCE – The Inyo County Board of Supervisors today approved a proclamation recognizing November 11 as Veterans Day and reminding citizens of the need to honor and thank veterans, support efforts to provide for and improve the well-being of military service men and women, and to never take hardfought freedoms for granted. The proclamation also gave the Supervisors a chance to recognize the important work being done in support of veterans locally, by the Bishop and Lone Pine VFW Posts and Auxiliaries, Bishop, Big Pine, and Independence American Legion Posts and Auxiliaries, and the Inyo County Veterans Service Office and its VSO Gordon Greene. “America’s veterans have fought to defend our country, its values, and its interests since the first days of our founding; they have defeated tyrants, eliminated terrorists, and secured freedom at home and abroad, and their courage and fortitude in the face of adversity serve as an example for all Americans,” the proclamation states. “These Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen selflessly placed lives, well-being, and security of others before their own so that we may enjoy the privileges of peace, prosperity, and freedom – and we are forever indebted to them beyond measure.” VSO Greene read the proclamation aloud Tuesday, receiving accolades from the Board for his hard work on behalf of veterans. “It’s easy to say we support our veterans, but you’re there to make it happen … to make sure the support gets onto the ground,” Supervisor Rick Pucci said. The proclamation further recognizes the 75th anniversary of Bishop VFW Post 8988, which is in the process of being renamed in honor of the late Col. Robert “Bob” Waggoner, a decorated veteran, former Prisoner of War, and community advocate. “On behalf of myself and the comrades of Post 8988, it is a privilege and an honor to dedicate the VFW Post 8988 after such an honorable and great individual,” said Post Commander John Underhill. Col. Waggoner, a native of Jansen, Utah and longtime Bishop resident with his wife, Vickie, was held as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam – at various prison camps and the infamous Hanoi Hilton – from September

12, 1966 to March 4, 1973. He had been forced to eject from his burning F105 after it was struck by anti-aircraft ground fire, and was immediately captured. The then-Lt. Col. spent the next 2,366 days in captivity – the first three years of which he was listed as Missing in Action. The Air Force and Lt. Col. Waggoner’s family discovered he was alive in 1969 when the North Vietnamese released a young sailor who had memorized the names of other POWs. Lt. Col. Waggoner was released six years after his capture, and, remarkably, served another eight years in the Air Force, retiring as a full colonel and the recipient of two Silver Stars, two Legion of Merit medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, and a Prisoner of War medal. Col. Waggoner often shared his harrowing experiences as a POW, and in general was a noted lecturer. He was also a staunch advocate for veterans, a loyal member of VFW Post 8988, and active member of the community. He proudly served on the advisory council for the National Wounded Warrior Center in Mammoth Lakes and was on the board of directors for the Eastern Sierra Music Festival – an event created to raise awareness of and funds for the center. Supervisor Jeff Griffiths, in whose district the post is located, noted, “I feel so honored that we get to celebrate the 75th anniversary with the Bishop VFW and it is totally fitting that the post be renamed after Col. Waggoner,” said Supervisor Jeff Griffiths, in whose district the post is located. The Board was sure to thank all veterans for their service and sacrifice. “November is a month when Americans remember with gratitude our many blessings,” Supervisor Jennifer Roeser said. “Chief among those blessings is the millions of Veterans who have served our Nation since its founding. May we never forget to be grateful.” A full copy of the proclamation is available at: https:// www.inyocounty.us/government/publications-reports-plans-proclamations.
