LETTER from the EDITOR For many years, I’ve been intrigued by Bali. Its unique culture, tropical beauty and fierce history seemed irresistibly exotic. So when I was invited to stay at one of the eco-hotels on the island, I couldn’t refuse. What I found here was a cornucopia of sustainable perfection: clothing made from natural, light cotton, silk and bamboo, dyed with plant extracts and juices. Holistic, restorative beauty treatments unlike any others around. And best of all, people whose genuine sweetness and smiles melt away any remaining city stresses. Pure bliss. That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate this issue to that fantastic island. This 10th issue of Eluxe is packed with not only flamboyant fashion and beguiling beauty tips, but also , I hope, the spirit of an incredible island. There’s also a gallery of fascinating people whose warmhearted spirits would be most welcome on the ‘Island of the Gods’ – elephant saviour Daphne Sheldrick, rapper/actress/philanthropist Eve Jihan Jeffers-Cooper and chef Mira Manek all show that there’s so much beauty in kindness.

THE HOST With The Most

Eluxe interviews Fashion News Live Host and Fashion Film Director Rocco Leo Gaglioti about a new fashion channel for the deaf.

10 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

You have exciting news! Tell us about your partnership with Vivicast and the launch of FNL Network. Vivicast Media and FNL Network just signed a global distribution deal to bring our content to audiences around the world. FNL Network goes beyond the catwalk, bringing together fashion, lifestyle, reality, and news into a 24/7 linear network. Instead of airing on the internet and YouTube, we will be broadcast on a linear 24 hour HD TV channel. There are a lot of fashion channels these days: Fashion One, Fashion TV and so on. What does FNL Network bring to the table that other fashion channels don’t? We are not going to be just runway shows. We are going to have different variations of lifestyle programming such as City Showcase, Flashback Friday, Fashion Able and Film Corner. We are also based out of America and are one of the only networks in North America that focuses on fashion, news, and lifestyle content. Our other programs will include Model Monday, FNL Vintage, Beauty Tips, and Backstage Pass. What is your day-to-day life like at the FNL Network? I am working on unscripted programming and development for FNL Network. I will continue to oversee all day-to-day operations of the network, including news, film, and marketing communications, as well as research and acquisitions.

doing Fashion News Live, I decided to utilize my relationships to make a show specifically catered to the hearing impaired in their own form of communication. That was the birth of Fashion News Live in ASL. We are the only fashion and entertainment network that has created a show for the hearing impaired. What’s your view on sustainable fashion? I think it’s great. I think more designers should practice sustainable manufacturing and use more natural fabrics. It’s good for the global economy as well. Just a shame there aren’t more designers doing sustainable fashion for men! At least you women have Edun, Stella McCartney, Sumo and so on. Do you have any fashion obsessions? I just love my shoes, bags, belts and sport coats. Tell us a bit about your fashion film directing. I fell into it with first film Inside Amato. I didn’t realize how much I would like it. On my last trip to Serbia for fashion week, I directed a second short film. It comes naturally to me and I am lucky enough that people like my vision. What’s next for FNL Network?

You’ve decided to put sign language onto FNL, which is pretty unique! What made you decide to start a program for the hearing impaired?

We have several developmental deals in the works and will be doing global programming from fashion to lifestyle content. We are currently working on a deal with the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival to broadcast its award-winning films such as Inside Amato on our network. We will have several other award-winning shows on our channel as well such as Fashion News Live. We are creating a 24/7 HD channel that everyone can enjoy.

My mother is deaf and I am a CODA (child of deaf adults). My first language was not spoken language—I learned to communicate with my hands through ASL. Growing up in a deaf household, I realized the lack of accessibility for the hearing impaired and always wanted to make the hearing world more accessible for the deaf. After years of

For the latest updates on FNL Network follow us on social media: Facebook.com/FNLNetwork Instagram: @FNLNetwork Twitter: @FNLNetwork

Right now we are focused on expanding our content and developing new shows. From reality TV to travel series, we want to feature more than just fashion content.

Seaduction:

The Tale Of The Tail

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi

From the abyss of the sea of Apulia emerges a project that subverts traditions: Seaduction: The Tale Of The Tail aims to educate us about the beauty of the watery world surrounding us. Filmmakers Domenico de Ceglia and Serena Porta believe the sensual waterworld has a feminine character: determined, soft, energetic, but also strong and sometimes even violent. They employ the mermaid as their archetypical protagonist; with her dual identity (human and marine), she embodies the world of man and that of the natural world. In the film, nature’s nemesis gets its ferocious vengeance on mankind, to warn humans not to perpetrate Mother Nature’s exploitation.

solved if everyone acts conscientiously, without impositions or dogmas. We may recommend a major concern in the consumption of fish, as with any local product with a low environmental and energetic impact: that is what eating sustainably is about.

The film has been a success so far; it was selected by the Festival del Cinema Europeo di Lecce and Valdarno Cinema Fedic and had its International Premiere at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival where it received 7 nominations.

Seaduction: the Tale of the Tail is the final segment of the project Seaduction, that aims to spread awareness on sustainable issues, also regarding a healthy diet. This project was supported by the city of Molfetta, the schools in the area, such as Istituto Alberghiero di Molfetta, Istituto Monsignor Antonio Bello di Molfetta and Istituto Amerigo Vespucci. Also organisations related to the sea world have supported the project. These include G.A.C. Terre di mare, Gruppi di Azione Costiera, that focuses on fishing policies and eco-tourism in the region of Apulia, and also cultural associations such as Rearte, that have joined the cause, amongst others. The entire project developed through workshops and conferences.

The choice to respect the planet and its natural resources is our only solution for long term survival, as filmmakers with Domenico de Ceglia and Serena Porta explain in this exclusive interview. How has living by the sea inspired your story? The seaside town of Molfetta is where we were born and where we grew up, in close contact with our beloved sea. In recent years, fishing, which is one of the city’s main activities, has been going through crisis, due to the exploitation of marine resources. Furthermore, non-traditional military devices are making their way through, such as mustard gases and chemical bombs left by NATO in our waters after World War II. Seaduction: The Tale of The Tail, seems to want to have the sea take its vengeance over mankind... Yes, somehow it is nature’s vengeance to man’s loss, since he superbly disrespected its mother - what the Greeks call “Hybris”, i.e. the one who gave him life. Thus, humans face the Dantesque retaliation that every man has to confront in this world if he continued disrespecting Mother Nature. Why did you choose mermaids as, the avengers of the sea world, as opposed to fish or other aquatic creatures? We chose mermaids for their beauty, because we are certain that it is the perception of beauty of nature that will save us and the planet. Some scientists predict fish-less oceans by 2048 if we don’t do something about it now, is your film also a critique to the fishing industry, and would you recommend a vegetarian or vegan diet? It most certainly is a critique to the fishing industry and canning. We are vegetarians but we are not pushing people to become vegetarian, nor do we want to provide solutions for this global issue. Any problem can be 12 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

The short-movie is just the tip of the iceberg of the Seaduction project. Tell us more about the bigger picture.

The mermaids in the short-film seem to be waltzing out of a catwalk, how does ethical fashion fit into your sustainability awareness campaign? Mermaids are creatures that have nothing to do with humans. Just as models wearing a dress, mermaids carry upon themselves a mission: reprise the order of nature that has been shattered. Besides, winking at ethical fashion is part of our aim in reevaluating beauty and fine taste: it is important to transform this in a symbol to homage as a Brand. In the making of the short-film Seaduction: the Tale of the Tail one of the most important aspects is that other than any words, concept or intention, the actual clothes that were used were recycled. Do you feel that when discussing sustainability, the marine world neglected compared to the land-based realm? The Earth’s ecosystem is based on a balance between its various parts, no one is excluded. Sea pollution might be less evident, and this is the reason why many people see the water world as the place where they can hide small and large amounts of rubbish. But one day nature will show up with the consequences of all that has been done: this is the message that we hope will come across with Seaduction: the Tale of the Tail. What short-term and long-term results are you hoping for with the release of your movie? We hope that in the short-term the film will be acknowledged at a profound level, as the metaphor it stands for. On the long-term, we hope to find an enlightened producer who will develop the feature version.

Eluxe Exclusive Interview:

EVE JEFFERS COOPER (a.k.a. Eve)

14 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

Move over, Angelina – there’s a new celeb philanthropist in town! Musician and actress Eve Jeffers-Cooper (a.k.a Eve) has been announced as a Goodwill Ambassador for Malaika, a non-profit that provides education and health programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After visiting the Central African country with the founder of Malaika, model Noella Coursaris Musunka, hip hop star Eve fell in love with the country and its people and arrived in the African nation to inaugurate the very first e-library in the village of Kalebuka on International Women’s Day, The e-library is the newest addition to the Malaika School, a free, accredited school that provides a comprehensive and high quality education to 230 girls. A grassroots organisation, Malaika aims to empower Congolese girls through education and health programmes. The sustainable school is 100%powered by solar energy and greatly impacts the surrounding Kalebuka village through its Community Centre, built in partnership with FIFA, which offers education, health and sports programmes to 7,000 people per year. Malaika also provides essential infrastructure development by building 5 wells that supply fresh water to 10,000 people, greatly reducing disease and illness. The school now has both print and e-books on Android tablets, giving the girls greater access to the outside world and improving their job skills, too. The Grammy Award-winning musician and actress, who is currently starring in box office hit Barbershop 3, said, “My trip to the DRC to visit Malaika’s projects exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be a great environment for the girls, but Malaika goes above and beyond. You can feel the excitement from the girls when they take their seats in class. The library will be an incredible addition to the Malaika School and to their curriculum.” Eve put her creative skills to work with the young students in Kalebuka, writing a poem with them about the power of education. She also performed her hit single ‘Who’s That Girl’ for the excited villagers and students.

She has been a busy woman: she’s just participated in the 18th annual Gumball 3000 rally, and for her work as a fashion designer, she was the recipient of a Breakthrough Style Award from Vogue. This summer, she will reunite with Gwen Stefani for all dates on the “This Is What the Truth Feels Like” tour and is also releasing her own new music later in the year. We caught up with Eve on her busy schedule to ask her a few quick questions. What prompted you to try acting in the first place, and how has that been different for you than making music? I started getting requests to be in films and figured ok, why not try. So I worked with an acting coach and it went from there. Today I consider myself both an actress and a musician. How has being an ambassador for Malaika changed you, if at all, and what most struck you about African life compared to that in the UK or USA? I’ve been to different parts of Africa over the years and depending on what country or what location you are in that country life can obviously be challenging and opportunities aren’t as great. Being an ambassador for Malaika has just made me appreciate all the little things we do have here a bit more. I think it’s important to help all girls in need but in particular girls in Africa because I’m hoping that my outside influence and resources will be able to help in some ways. Akon has recently brought solar panels to Africa and says he uses them himself. Do you do anything positive for the environment yourself ? I need to be better but I do recycle. Everyone has to play a part in some way at all times. What’s next for Eve? More music, and hopefully babies... Who knows?

The

ELEPHANT WOMAN For almost 60 years she has been gardian for one of the biggest mammals to roam the planet. Lauren Kearney interviews the remarkable Dame Daphne Sheldrick.

Y

ou can’t help but be in awe of the extraordinary Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Compassionate, courageous and a devoted caregiver, her kindness towards the wild animals of Africa has led to some unbelievable milestones. It all began in 1955, when she married the Head Warden of Kenya’s largest national park, Tsavo, at 21. She started opening her doors to Tsavo’s orphaned and injured animals, from antelopes to wart hogs. By the 1960s, following years of trial and error, she created the first milk formula for rhino infants. Not many years after, she also perfected a baby formula for orphaned elephants.

16 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

Together with her husband David, she spent over two decades raising and rehabilitating many wild species. After her husband’s death in 1977, Daphne established the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, in memory of the man who’d taught her so much about the wonders of wild animals and in a bid to raise funds to help more species in Kenya. In 1989, she was decorated by the Queen with an MBE for her remarkable work in this field. Today, at 82 years of age, Sheldrick is no less passionate about her cause than she was at 21. In this interview, she talks to me about the upcoming 40th year anniversary of the DSWT, staying positive, ivory poaching and the new luxury camp that’s open to everybody.

Next year marks the 40th year anniversary of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. How does that make you feel and how do you plan to commemorate it? I am extremely proud of what the DSWT has been able to achieve, and I know that David, my late husband, would be as well. However, we have never really had the inclination to celebrate anniversaries because each day for us is busy with elephants in the Nursery, many of who are suffering from poaching related disabilities and all fragile and grieving for the lost elephant family. We live alongside them and feel that sorrow which inhibits celebratory events. That said forty years is significant, and we have many amazing foster parents around the world whose generous steadfast support has enabled us to achieve what we have and this would be a good time to celebrate those successes. What have been the greatest milestones? There have been many important milestones relating to the challenges we have had to face but perhaps the greatest has been able to overcome those who have tried to destroy us and our work, motivated by jealously of our success. From the moment you began, you were dealing with the crippling wildlife poaching crisis. Were there times when you felt hopeless and if so, how did you stay positive through those times?

I have always turned to the elephants for inspiration in the face of adversity. They suffer loss and heartbreak on an almost daily basis, they grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones just as deeply as us, but they turn the page to focus on the living, and I try to emulate that. What was the best lesson your husband David Sheldrick taught you about animals? The best lesson taught to me by David as well as by my parents has been that orphaned wild animals never ‘belong.’ They are only on load for the dependent years and that the greatest gift you can give them is freedom to lead a natural wild life as dictated by nature, motivated by their genetic memory. How do you feel we’ve progressed in terms of combating ivory poaching? In relation to helping stem the poaching menace, the Trust has always done its very best according to the resources at our disposal, and we are always extremely mindful that we owe our success to the incredible global support we have enjoyed. Our motto has always been that you ‘reap what you sow’ and if one does a good job, recognition and support follows. Money, corruption, greed and ignorance motivates the evil ivory and rhino horn trade, and throughout the decades we have seen the threat before, but a total ivory ban relieved things for fifteen years. An affluent China and Far East and their thirst for ivory is definitely ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 17

18 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

putting Africa’s elephant populations into a very precarious position once again, but we do feel a more positive shift in recent months, and our field efforts have seen a 50% decline in Tsavo of poaching deaths. That is not to say the threat does not remain, but it does indicate how effective anti-poaching efforts, aerial surveillance and veterinary teams can be in thwarting poaching and saving individual lives. Our Veterinary team in Tsavo alone saved over 80 elephant’s lives who would have died due to poisoned arrow, spear and bullet wounds, that could be saved thanks to early treatment. These elephants are first sighted from the air in most cases as Tsavo is a vast place, bigger than some countries.

camps afford a glimpse into the world of these elephants and the stunning surrounds.

Despite the fact that the Asian elephant and many other species are endangered, many people still do not care. Poachers don’t care. Why do you think that is?

What can people do to help the wildlife poaching crisis?

Money, corruption, greed and ignorance motivates the evil ivory and rhino horn trade. How can we get people to care more? The internet and our fostering programme which has proved amazingly popular has played a great part in educating the global public and demonstrating that elephants are emotionally ‘human’ and better than us humans in terms of caring and forgiveness. You’ve just hired some dogs! Tell us about the Canine Unit you’ll be launching this year to help in the fight against ivory poaching. Our Canine Unit follows in the footsteps our aim to undertake whatever is necessary to protect wildlife employing pioneering and effective solutions. The three carefully selected and fully trained dogs will work alongside six trained handlers, accommodated in our specially built kennels that also have an onsite laboratory. The Unit will work alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service, our Aerial Unit and our Anti-Poaching Teams, and will track poison arrow poachers and wildlife offenders; coordinating with our aircraft, so we can provide a more rapid response in any area. Could you tell our readers about the luxury camp the DSWT opened last year and why people should go? Our luxury camp is the latest addition to our eco-lodges and is the second camp to be built by our Ithumba Reintegration Centre. Here, the focus for the orphans is learning how to live a wild life and the two

Opened in 2015, the luxury self-catering retreat, Ithumba Hill, has been created to offer increased luxury for guests exploring Tsavo East’s remote northern area whilst enjoying visits to the Trust’s Ithumba elephant Orphans. From its elevated position halfway up Ithumba Hill, this private luxury tented camp enjoys breath-taking views across Tsavo’s vast landscape, and like our two other properties, has been designed for the more intrepid traveller who relishes being off the beaten track.

Kenya and Africa stands at a crossroads for its wildlife. Everyone can do something by raising awareness of the poaching crisis, and by raising funds to help those who are able to make even a small difference at the field level to protect and preserve the elephants. Otherwise, elephants could be extinct in the wild within the next 15 years. Raising awareness of the poaching crisis is something that anyone can do – through signing our ivory petition and calling for a ban on all ivory at: www.iworry.org, or following us on Facebook or Instagram and sharing our posts. Fostering an orphaned elephant in our care at www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org, receiving their monthly email updates and becoming a part of our foster family provides vital funds for the care of the elephants and our wider Anti-Poaching and Veterinary projects. It also makes a great gift for children! If you could send a message to the world, what would it be? The message to the world would be that we humans are in fact in terms of Nature also ‘animals’. The world is home to all animals and all in fact contribute to the wellbeing of the whole. We have just one home and mankind cannot exist in isolation of nature. Destroy the natural world and its wild denizens and we are in fact destroying ourselves. My late husband always maintained that in reality mankind is the most endangered species because we have done the most damage to the earth and will one day pay the price. I believe we are in fact beginning to see this with extreme weather conditions, earthquakes, floods and droughts. All images courtesy Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Michael Cinco

The King of Couture by Chere Di Boscio

D

ubai is not known for its plethora of eco couture designers, but it has to be said that some of the most creative couture has been crafted by an incredible talent based in the region: Michael Cinco.

The Filipino designer, whose atelier has been in Dubai for years, was hand picked by Tyra Banks to construct gowns out of recycled materials for Cycle 16 of America’s Next Top Model. He used rubber bands, smashed mirrors, bin bags, discarded parachutes and glass to produce couture that was shot by Nigel Barker–on a landfill site. The results impressed not only the ANTM crew, but Cinco himself: “After that shoot, I found out that I could use things that we usually throw out as beautiful ornaments on couture dresses that look like expensive gemstones,” he said.

He clearly has fond memories of that small collection: “One of the judges, Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley, was raving about the clothes I did for the shoot. I remember he even exclaimed about one dress that, even if it was made from recycled materials, it could be used on the red carpet by a famous Hollywood celebrity”. His triumph in Cycle 16 led Tyra to ask him back for another season, which shot in Greece. A proud Filipino, Cinco was delighted that a clothing brand from his homeland, Bench, with whom he designed a collection, and Filipina/British model Georgina Wilson were also involved in that cycle. “I was so happy when I learned that other Filipinos were in Greece for the shoot. The ANTM staff was in awe of Georgina Wilson’s beauty… It made me so proud to be a Filipino.” Cinco grew up enthralled by glamour - specifically that of the women of classic Hollywood movies. The impeccable elegance and sophistication of Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford and Audrey Hepburn had a huge impression on his formative design imagination. “I pictured those fabulous heroines and imagined dressing them up in my creations. I chased after those visions….” Today, those visions have become a reality, as the designer has become a red carpet favourite with the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Paloma Faith and other A listers. No wonder he won the Best Designer Award on the Red Carpet at the Grazia Style Awards 2016.

30 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

Most recently, he presented his first collection at Paris’ Haute Couture Week, which was something of another dream come true. His 30 piece collection was followed by a prêt-à-porter line created exclusively for Couturissimo, an e-commerce site dedicated to couture and luxury, adhering to strict couture standards but providing more accessible price points, thus making the pieces an extension of the designer’s brand but with discreet modifications. Cinco’s prêt-à-porter creations were a tribute to nature: an homage to the Jardin Tuileries in Paris, where he sat 15 years ago and promised himself that one day, he would have a show in the City of Light. The result was handmade dresses decked out in floral patterns evoked playful summers in Paris. His real show-stoppers were a pink princess ball gown and an ultra-glamorous, majestic red number with asymmetrical hem made from delicate lace, embellished with minute laser-cut organza flowers. As well as giving a nod to nature in this supreme slow-fashion collection, Cinco also acknowledged a reference to his Filipino roots. His collection was divided into five parts, named with Filipino words according to design elements: the Solihiya, Banig, Calado, Barong and Terno. The Solihiya collection mimicked the solihiya weave normally found in furniture from the Spanish colonial era, but this time, adorned with freshwater pearls. The Banig collection, characterized by the crisscross weave of the traditional Filipino mat, referenced his place of birth, the province of Samar, where banig mats are local handicrafts. The Calado collection took inspiration from the Spanish mantilla, a veil normally used by women in church during the Spanish colonial era, with exquisite calado embroidery all made by hand. The Barong and Terno collections, presenting more modern, modified versions of the terno sleeves, were embellished with patterns combining three weaves—solihiya, ikat, banig—all bedecked by tiny beads. Cinco paid tribute to the petits mains who spent months hand-making these wearable works of art, acknowledging that while he is behind the vision, his artisans are behind the actual creation of the gowns. “They are artists in their own right,” he states, “and I am proud to help to keep those Filipino traditions alive.”

It’s a sad fact, but many of us are still in denial: our consumption habits are killing the planet. In particular, the Amazon Rainforest, the lungs of the world, is being destroyed at a staggering rate, mainly for food: soya and cattle - but lumber is also being cleared, and increasing numbers of humans are moving onto what was once rain forest. Wake Up is a sustainable nightwear collection aiming to create awareness of deforestation and climate change inspired by the Amazon Rainforest. The collection features prints inspired by the Amazon Rainforest, representative of the beauty and importance of nature. The garments demonstrate the elegance and feminine nature of the brand and the soft silks, bamboo jersey and variety of silhouettes intend to make women feel beautiful, strong and empowered. The sustainably sourced fabrics, use of natural dyes and recycling contribute to the brand’s environmentally conscious outlook. Ultimately though, it’s very important to note that if we really wake up to the state of emergency on the planet, we will know that reducing ALL our consumption dramatically is the only way to save us all.

Tighten UP!

TRIED AND TESTED FACE TIGHTENING TREATMENTS By Marian Hassan

66 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

We’ve heard it all before: “Combats ageing.” “Makes wrinkles fade away.” “Takes 10 years off in just 2 weeks.” Yep, beauty creams make a lot of lofty promises, but rarely deliver. Moreover, we’re just starting to learn about the nasty chemicals that go into many of these ‘miracle’ products – some of which, like Oxybenzone may actually accelerate the signs of ageing. Wrinkles are a concern for many of us over 30, but there are other indications of diminishing collagen, atrophied muscles and reduced cellular growth that start to appear around that age too – sagging jowls and turkey necks come to mind. Unfortunately, most creams can only give temporary improvement to those issues. Sure, ageing is natural and happens to us all and yes, we all need to accept that our skin won’t retain its youthful glow forever. But if you’d like to stave off the most obvious signs of ageing, technological solutions are far more effective than anything in a jar. Wondering about the best high tech Face Tightening Treatments? Here, after a few visits to the Dermavita Clinic in London’s Kensington over the past few months, I’ve been able to try and test some of the most efficient ways of helping your skin to reduce wrinkles, sagging and other signs of ageing.

ULTRASOUND FACIAL How it works: Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive anti-ageing skincare option, and it’s even used for tightening up areas of the body that are prone to sagging, like knees and upper arms. Unlike other laser treatments that simply target the outer layers of skin, ultrasound therapy goes deeper than the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen in the deepest layers. The dermis layer of the skin contains most of the skin’s specialized cells and structures. It synthesizes less collagen each year after about age 20. For women, estrogen levels decrease after menopause. This leaves the skin drier, thinner, and not as taut as before.Once the dermis begins producing the new collagen, sagging facial and neck skin lifts and starts to look younger and tighter. How it feels: First, my skin was cleansed well, and a gentle peel was applied. This was rinsed off, and a serum was massaged into my skin. A flat, duck bill type of device went over my skin with high speed oscillations targeting deep tissue layers loosening up the dead skin cells and tightening pores. After that, the device was applied in upward motions to tighten my skin and a relaxing lymphatic drainage massage was done all over my face and neck, followed by the application of a cooling antioxidant serum designed to boost collagen development. The whole thing took around 60 minutes, and felt a little bit warm, but not unpleasantly so. The results: I noticed reduced pores and a firmer complexion immediately, but after a few days this seemed to fade. Best for: Those with mild to moderate skin laxity on the face and neck, or anyone who wants a cleaner, clearer complexion.

RADIOFREQUENCY How it works: A machine emits controlled levels of radiofrequency waves that heat the collagen fibres deep under the skin, causing them to contract and tighten, thus giving your skin a firmer base. How it feels: First, I was asked to lie down on a comfortable table, and a gel was applied to my face and neck. The machine’s golf ball-like tip was moved around the treatment area in quick little circles. Over the course of around 20 minutes, it got increasingly warm and sometimes a bit too hot, which felt a bit like a pinprick, but just for a millisecond. Generally, the whole process felt nice, kind of like a firm facial massage, but fear of that little pinprick lurked in the back of my mind. At the end of the treatment my skin was slightly red, but this was temporary. Results: The sagging skin under my chin was greatly tightened and firmer after just one treatment. I went back for two sessions and the results were more or less the same. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to complete a whole set of treatments, but I would like to! You should see results within a day or two and these continue to improve for around two weeks. By that time, what you see is what you get. For optimal results, you should get treatments once every three weeks or so for 3-4 months. Results should last a year; then you may need to come in for touch ups every six months or so. Best for: Those with puppet lines or slight sagging under the chin. This technique can also be used to tighten skin around the knees, arms and stomach.

CACI How it works: Two electric ‘wands’ glide over your face like two chopsticks trying to pull up noodles. The wands provide electronic stimulation of the muscles in the face, causing contractions of the muscles beneath the skin. This helps build a firmer foundation for the skin on top of the muscles, but it doesn’t tighten the skin itself. How it feels: Weird and pleasantly tingly. A pad was affixed to my back to avoid any shocks, and the two double pronged stick devices were used to pick my skin up between them in a kind of gentle ‘pinching’ motion. There was a slightly metallic taste in my mouth sometimes, but I enjoyed the feeling of the wands gently picking up, pulling and pressing on the skin on my face. Afterwards, I was given a gel mask that smelled and felt amazing, and left my skin glowing. Results: My skin definitely felt tighter, immediately. You know how your butt gets firmer after you do a lot of squats? It was kind of like that – you could seriously feel that the muscles had tightened. It did diminish the ‘puppet lines’ on the side of my mouth a bit, too. But those effects went away the next day. My therapist, Anna, told me I would need a course of one treatment a week for up to six weeks to see a lasting difference. Best for: Those with slight sagging, notable ‘puppet lines’.

STONE HOUSE

STONE HOME Chere Di Boscio travels far, far away to Indonesia. But rather than finding herself feeling out of place, discovers a sustainable boutique hotel that feels like home.

It’s a rare thing to feel truly at home in a hotel. Knowing that each room is more or less a clone of the others on the property makes you feel a bit like a bee in a hive, and the forced smiles and politeness of the staff connote a certain stiffness. The pillows never really feel quite right, and where the heck is the light switch to the bathroom…?

Our room was a sanctuary, complete with a large selection of books, handwoven rugs, local curiosities and delicious, healthy snacks like exotic fruits, nuts and veggie chips Wendy makes herself with her newly purchased dehydrator. Like the main building, all materials in our room were locally sourced and made of natural stone, wood, ceramic, rattan and straw.

So when you find that gem of a place that really feels like your own, it’s hard to leave.

Wendy explained that she and Walker had sourced all the fabrics and decorative items locally, too – in fact, creating different aesthetics in each room had become one of Walker’s passions: ours (‘the Long House’) was the most ‘Balinese’ but Walker had also designed a two level Mediterranean style room that wouldn’t be out of place in Greece, and a Javanese room which features rare, handpainted wooden panels sourced from an antique palace in Indonesia.

Such is the vibe at Stone House, Bali, set deep in the rural heart of Ubud. There’s no sign here, but I spotted the place immediately thanks to a small touch one of its rustic wooden doors; a smear of goldsmithing work denoting an artistic ‘handle’ to push. I had heard Stone House was an interior designer’s dream, and here was the first sign of it. Pushing through that ‘golden door’, you enter the highly intimate world of Walker Zabriskie and Wendy Kassel, the owners and designers of this boutique property, who also happen to live next door. Wendy greets you with a warm smile and a drink, and you’ll soon find your worries melting at the sound of her sweet, contagious laugh. She ushered us into the open space of the hotel’s kitchen/living room/dining area and after a cold, fresh drink, led us down a marigold petal strewn path to our room. It was spectacular. A rustic swing hung from industrial rope on a porch overlooking the communal pool, which was designed to mimic a natural pond with its rocks and irregular shape. The completely wood clad bedroom was a colonial design buff’s dream: cotton curtains billowed out to reveal views directly over one of Bali’s famous rice paddies; a lofty canopied king-sized bed was beset with thick white linens, and the key feature of the jaw-dropping bathroom was his-and-hers carved out granite basins set atop gnarled, ancient tree roots. 70 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

We spent our first evening reading outside on the patio facing the rice paddy, and the next morning, enjoyed a healthy vegan breakfast of a smoothie bowl, fresh fruit, coconut yogurt and fresh organic coffee served in the communal kitchen. There, we met Dale, an outrageous British gem hunter and his entourage and were most entertained by their tales of searching for the world’s most beautiful opals and crystals. Later, we set out down the road to explore Ubud, the tiny town in Bali made famous by Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love. Inspired by the film, I actually paid a visit to Wayan, the healer in the film, who demonstrated an uncanny insight into my life and health. A little dazed by this, I crossed the street from her ‘office’ to have lunch at Bali Buddha, a vegan restaurant popular with expats. Refreshed, I jumped into one of Ubud’s many informal ‘taxis’ to hit Monkey Forest Road to do some shopping for local crafts and jewellery.

ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 71

Back at Stone House, Wendy told us about her masseuse, Tino, who she said was a ‘love him or hate him’ kind of therapist. He had changed people’s lives with his touch, it was said, but Walker insisted he wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Indeed, as soon as I met Tino, he explained that he was more a therapist than a masseuse, and if I wanted a bit of relaxation, I was in the hands of the wrong guy. I was a little scared, to be honest, but since he was there, I went ahead. He didn’t lie. The pulling, pushing and pinching was doing to my muscles was so painful, I cried out many times. I even asked him to stop at some point, but he kept chatting as though he hadn’t heard me at all. At the end of a very long hour, I was absolutely amazed: a nagging pain in a hamstring had completely gone, and my left leg, which was always a bit shorter than my right, was now the same size. I realized that I was buzzing with energy when I got up from the massage table. Miraculous. Later in the evening, I sat in the living room, throwing a ball to the hotel’s ridiculously cute rescue dogs (who never tire of a game of catch), listening to the grunts of the frogs and geckos and catching the delicious aromas of a vegetarian dinner cooking. Wendy’s throaty laugh was heard in the distance. The stars were coming out. ‘Dinner’s ready’ somebody shouted. Suddenly, home didn’t feel so far away at all.

A Taste of Old England

SLALEY HALL By Anna van der Heijden

Surrounded by green fields and blue skies as far as the eye can see, this stately mansion commands attention - and relaxation

74 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

After a three and a half hour train ride from London, we arrived in the historical town Hexham, but our destination still lies ahead. It only seems fitting that to reach an ancient property, our ride is using ancient (yet somehow modern) technology: vegetable oil. EcoCabs takes us over roads curling over hills, through forests, along little rivers and - according to our driver - over the second oldest bridge in England to Slaley Hall. At first sight, it looks like a relatively modern building, but that is just the extension. The majority of Slaley Hall is as it was when it was built in 1912 and it still wears its wood panelling, oil paintings and enormous mirrors with the grandeur of an old dame. Deep and comforting hues of mahogany, burgundy and gold give a regal feeling throughout, but this is especially conveyed by our wonderfully large canopy bed with its heavy red velvet curtains and the antique bathtub inviting us to luxuriate in a long soak.

be called for our massages. The plush dove grey and robin’s egg blue decor was completely in tune with the hotel’s grandeur, and we felt our stresses melting away simply by spending time in such a soothing environment. There is no question: the therapists at Slaley Hall are very skilled. With their nimble, well-trained hands and the help of delightful products from ESPA they bring you in a state of utter relaxation. If you’re not familiar with the brand, ESPA makes use of the natural calming and refreshing properties of plants. They only use natural, sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients to create their wonderfully scented products, which leave your skin feeling baby soft. No wonder our therapists advised against showering immediately - you want these products to sink in.

Impressed with our chambers, we then explored the grounds and discovered its lovely Japanese Gardens, which were installed pre-1914 by the renowned Backhouse Nurseries of Acomb. Beyond that, lay a dense, rather mysterious pine forest that opened up to clearings that offered some breathtaking views of Slaley Hall’s vast grounds - no wonder the likes of Madonna, Elton John and Michael Jackson chose to hold concerts here.

Between the delights of relaxing at the spa and marvelling at the surrounding nature, we were treated with the most delicious meals. We enjoyed a British High Tea in the Duke’s Grill with typically English sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and tiny sweet treats all accompanied by a nice cup of proper tea. We had our dinner in Hadrian’s Brasserie, where we savoured a leisurely three-course meal. For breakfast Slaley Hall offers a richly filled buffet with everything one might possibly want to start the day with, be it fresh juice, fruit and cereal or the full English.

After a refreshing walk, our bodies longed for some relaxation. When we reached the hotel’s spa, we were greeted by the friendly staff. They ushered us to the scented and serene relaxing area where we waited to

This is a taste of old England; a feeling for what the gentle women of the Edwardian age may have enjoyed on a regular basis. And you know what? I could get used to this...

A ROCK SOLID CONCEPT

Blue Rock Village By Jody McCutcheon Would you visit a village with no cars? That is the new concept for a new $900 million project to be built on the existing Blue Rock Resort in Cape Town South Africa

ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 77

The hunters of green living have found their quarry. The old rock quarry, that is, known as Blue Rock Lake and located just outside South Africa’s Cape Town, in view of the Hottentots Holland mountain range. This is where architectural firm Swisatec has envisioned an idyllic, sustainable, car-free community. Simply put, the idea of Blue Rock Village is forty hectares of green living. More specifically, it will be an upcycling of an existing resort at a cost of $900 million into a mixed-use, luxury development project. Self-contained and self-functioning, Blue Rock Village will offer 1,000 apartments and what the developers call a “Life Style centre,” or a community-oriented place in which to dine, shop and socialize among restaurants, boutique stores and entertainment venues. The Village will also boast schools, sports and medical facilities. Apartment options include one, two and three bedrooms, as well as extra-spacious penthouse suites. Each residential unit will include 2.4-metre, rubber-sealed, thermal-break aluminum double-glazed glass windows; soundproofed floors and walls; an under-floor pipe heating system; and a large balcony. Housekeeping and room service are also available. For sporty types, options abound. Landscaped trails will allow for hiking, jogging and mountain biking. Blue Rock Lake, warm and crystal clear, provides for water sports like waterskiing, wakeboarding, rowing, diving, swimming and rock jumping. Courts

78 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

will be built for tennis, squash and volleyball, not to mention facilities for yoga and fitness regiments. The Blue Rock Village ethos revolves around community and sustainability. Apartments will be equipped with many eco-friendly features, including cost- and energy-saving insulation, LED lighting, nine-foot ceilings to facilitate temperature control, self-generated solar power, a solar water-heating system and water-management system for everything from shower to irrigation. Appliances are rated A++ for energy efficiency. Finally, buildings will be built and finished using eco-gentle materials and paints free of volatile organic compounds. Outside the apartments, the Village will also be kind to the planet. As a car-free environment, Blue Rock Village will reduce noxious emissions and be very pedestrian friendly. (Note that underground-parking facilities will be provided to allow residents to store cars for day trips, such as to the nearby Helderberg wine region, Gordon Bay’s sandy beaches or one of many golf courses). The landscaping itself is also green, literally, as the design calls for plenty of vegetation to line cobblestone streets and fill public spaces. Street-side seating areas allow residents to interact with each other as well as with nature. Think of Blue Rock Village as both a sustainable community and a community of sustainability. Construction doesn’t begin until September 2016, so patience is paramount, like that of a hunter seeking something of great value.

Fast as

Lightning By Jody McCutcheon

ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 81

Once upon a time, not so long ago, electric vehicles were a green alternative to those powered by fossil fuels. Performance was slow and unsteady, not always reliable, and the pricetag was expensive. Boy, have things changed. Want steady and reliable? Want affordable? Above all, want speed? The Lightning electric motorcycle, developed by the Lightning Motors Corp., delivers all three, billed by its website as the world’s fastest production motorcycle, electric or otherwise. This lofty claim is backed by some significant belt notches: in 2011, the Lightning claimed a Southern California Timing Association land speed record of 215.960 mph; while in 2013, it became the first electric motorcycle to defeat gas-powered bikes in a major motorsport race. By the numbers, the Lightning borders on unbelievable for an electric motorcycle: 0–160kph in 3 seconds, hitting 345kph in 10 seconds, with 228 newton-metres (168ft-lbs) of torque, an average range of 160km at highway speed (for a price of about $1.20 worth of electricity) and a top speed of 350kph (218mph). The IPM liquid-cooled electric motor offers 10,500rpm and 150kw (200hp). A 380V battery comes with a 12kWh pack, 15kWh pack or

82 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

20kWh pack, the latter extending the range per charge to up to 290km. Charging time is about thirty minutes on a DC fast charger, or about two hours on a level-2 charger. The Lightning also boasts user-programmable regenerative braking, not to mention Brembo disc brakes and Marchesini forged mag wheels. No expenses were spared, it seems, yet the whole package retails for US$38,800, a generous figure by performance motorcycle standards. Philosophically, the Lightning represents a means of championing alternative energy sources as viable fossil-fuel substitutes. It proves that a vehicle built with function and aesthetics in mind can rely on an electric power source without compromising its vitality. Several sources have bestowed favourable reviews, from Gizmag to Motorcycle Daily to Jay Leno’s Garage. Functionally, the Lightning blows away the competition. In fact, does it have any actual competition? Not in terms of electric motorcycles. Nine years in the making, the Lightning has hit the market. And it’s not just another two-wheeled cruiser. With its unexpected combination of beauty, power and sustainability, it’s turning heads, leaving fossil fuel–powered motorcycles in its dust, turning them into fossils. Join the transport revolution, encourage the evolution, try the Lightning on the track or take it for a back-road spin, but get on that soon. Otherwise it’ll be gone—you guessed it—Lightning fast.

The Macrobiotic Marvels of

Maya Brekalo By Lora O’Brien

84 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 85

If ever there was a real life superwoman, then I think Maja Brekalo is most definitely her. Not only is Maja a passionate foodie who shares her healthy lifestyle and cooking with her 138k instagram followers, she also provides us all with access to her tasty creations online at her blog, dhmaya.com. And if that isn’t enough, alongside Maja being a mother to a teenage daughter and a loving wife, she’s also a flight attendant, travelling the corners of the Earth, by day. For the past four years, Maja has also held cooking workshops where she inspires and teaches people about plant based cooking, and how great for us it truly it. So no surprise that we considered ourselves very lucky indeed when Maja offered us some time for a little sit down and get to know this magical mum a little bit better. We grilled her on why she feels a plant based lifestyle is the best, the foods she loves to cook with, and if that isn’t enough, we also have some of her delicious recipes for you to try and introduce plant based goodness into your daily lifestyle. Tell us a little bit about your plant based lifestyle? I think the best way to describe my lifestyle is plant based. We are all different but I think that the healthiest, most nourishing food for living is unrefined food of plant origin: vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, seeds, nuts and algae. This should be our base, what we have every single day and as the biggest part of our diet. I also prefer using seasonal ingredients and seasonal cooking. By this I mean that during colder months of the year I eat more “warming” cooked food: for example soups, stews, roasted and baked foods, and during warmer months more raw fresh food, salads, lots of fruits, ice cream… Of course, there are always exceptions and I don’t follow this to a T. What does plant based mean for you?

What was your diet like before you became plant based? I have always been into healthy eating and living a healthy lifestyle, ever since my childhood. I was never fussed about eating sweets, and actually loved the “grown up” food. I even used to gladly taste all the weird stuff my parents ate, like frog’s legs, caviar, all the seafood, even cabbage stews traditionally made in my home country. Our mother cooked simple Mediterranean dishes and that gave me a really good start with my own cooking. I started cooking around the age of ten, and then more regularly when I moved away when I was 16. It was back then that I fell in love with everything about food, especially healthy food. My diet then consisted of lots of vegetables and fruits, lean meat, fish and conventional grains. Later I discovered all the amazing grains, seeds, legumes and superfoods which opened my eyes to a completely different and magical world of abundance I didn’t know of. What first turned you on to a healthier diet? I can’t say what first got me into healthy eating. Like I said, I have always been into it, maybe partially thanks to my very sensitive stomach, but I could say that the turning point was cutting meat, dairy and all refined foods out my diet during my pregnancy. I was very careful with food during my pregnancy, and tried to only eat the food that was good for me and my baby. Unfortunately I suffered from Hyperemesis, which is basically a terrible never ending morning sickness that lasted three whole months. I lost a lot of weight and later I found I just couldn’t tolerate meat, dairy or any other refined food until the end of my pregnancy, even after the birth. That’s when I discovered the Macrobiotic way of eating, which helped me solve my problems with nausea and indigestion. I do have a very emotional relationship with food. It makes me happy creating and eating delicious, healthy and nourishing food.

My base education is in Macrobiotic, one of its main principles is seasonal eating. I totally agree that returning to nature in that way, remembering that nature provides us with what we need in each season, is the best way to go, both for us humans and for nature. I’ve moved away from the Macrobiotic way of eating over the years, finding what best works for me in the process. But I have kept many of basic principles though and I have to emphasize it’s amazing wisdom which first taught me how food, in terms of ingredients and ways of cooking, influences our bodies. That helped me immensely in finding a balance for myself.

It took you a while to start an Instagram account. Were you surprised by how popular your page has become?

Plant based can be described in more ways than one. I can tell you about my way of plant based eating. The shortest description would be plant based, unrefined and wheat free diet. Moreover, most food I have is seasonal vegetables, then seasonal fruits, smaller amount of whole grains (especially pseudo grains – quinoa, buckwheat; then rice, millet, oats, and no wheat if possible), legumes (chickpeas, beans, lentils), seeds (especially flax, chia, hemp and sesame), nuts, algae and naturally fermented soy products (miso, shoyu, tempeh, tofu) with the addition of superfoods. We try we buy ingredients in their most natural form possible and go from there.

Your blog is full of gorgeous, tasty recipes. What inspires you when creating them?

It also helps that I make my own sweets, cakes, granola and pates, etc. I love having smoothies and chia puddings for breakfast, a light lunch in form of lots of veggies with a small amount of grains (a soup or stew, salads with quinoa or rice, steamed or cooked veggies, risottos, and for dinner a mixed stir fry with soba or rice noodles or rice, toasted veggies, vegan tacos… served with lots of fresh lettuce arugula or something similar.

86 | ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10

Yes, very! I’m still surprised and amazed by the positivity surrounding me. And I’m grateful for all the kindness and interaction I get from my followers and foodie friends. Never in a million years would I have believed it if someone had told me that it would be like this. When I started, reaching a few thousand followers seemed like something I might get to in a few years, or never.

In creating recipes I’m inspired in many ways. I mostly kind of decide to use certain ingredients or one key ingredient and work around it. Like today, when I wanted to make something with tortillas: I had some spicy lentil pâté that I spread on warmed tortillas, then I caramelized some onions and zucchini, added some fresh avocado, cherry tomatoes, shredded lettuce and seasoned the whole thing with extra virgin olive oil and reduced balsamic vinegar. It was really delicious. And many times I’m inspired by gorgeous creations made by my foodie friends and Instagram. Are there any chefs or cooks in particular who inspire your cooking? I admire so many people on Instagram for different reasons. Some of their recipes are stunning, but also some of their photography is inspiring. Definitely the amazing Taline Gabriel of Hippie Lane (@talinegabriel), and also my wonderful friends, fellow successful bloggers and all round amazing girls: @missmarzipancom, @rebelrecipes, @amylecreations, @chocolatecoveredkatie and @nutriholist to name a few.

Do you have a favourite recipe you’ve created? That’s a tough one! Maybe my Hazelnut Carrot Cake or the Chia one I created today, with coconut almond milk, coconut yoghurt and cherries. Any kitchen disasters? Whenever I try to make vegan pancakes or crêpes. All of it just sticks to the pan and falls apart! It’s honestly, the only thing in the kitchen I simply can not make. If you could give three tips to someone looking to try eating more plant based, what would those be? Go slowly into the change, adding the new foods you like and cutting down gradually on the unhealthy foods. You need to adjust to the different textures and new flavours and your body to all the extra fibre and nutrients it will start getting. It’s important that you don’t feel deprived or unhappy. It is important to learn the basics in cooking/preparing this “new” food, especially how to cook grains, legumes and vegetables properly, and in a tasty creative way. What are some of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to go plant based? Most people don’t know what to do with the ingredients they buy and end up throwing them away after the expiration day passes. Maybe the biggest mistake is to expect to substitute meat and dairy with vegan varieties like seitan or tofu and eat vegan bacon, sausages, burgers. It

just doesn’t work. I think you should embrace plant food for what it is and enjoy it because it’s so full of amazing flavour and deliciousness. The real key is to not feel like you’re settling for less, but to make it your first choice. If someone is looking to boost energy levels, what foods would you suggest? I would always recommend to start the day with healthy nourishing breakfast, enriched with superfoods like maca, baobab, açai and spirulina powder. The easiest way to pack these in is with a nourishing smoothie. Cut out refined foods, especially bad carbs and sugar because they give you that big high, and you come crashing down soon after. I recommend eating slow carbs and proteins in form of whole grains and legumes that will stabilize blood sugar and give a long stable energy. What key ingredients do you like to cook with? Aside from vegetables, shoyu (naturally fermented soy sauce), ume su (Umeboshi seasoning), extra virgin olive oil, quinoa and rice for savory dishes and chia seeds for breakfasts. What do you hope to achieve by 2017? I would like to reach even more people with a message that plant based eating is delicious, creative and accessible, to teach, motivate and empower them to try it themselves, through Instagram, blogging and of course my workshops. Our first one was a real hit, and just goes to show how good food can bring people together. I’d also love to write a cookbook. Watch this space! ELUXE MAGAZINE ISSUE 10 | 87

When mushy and sauce like, remove from the flame and when slightly cooled, add 1 tsp of Balance superfood blend. 5. Now you’re set and can layer the parfait: sauce at the bottom, then chia oats, sauce again and yoghurt on top. Use the toppings you like. Any homemade granola and fruits would be great, seeds and nuts too.

Unsustainably

STUPID

Not only was a rare Himalaya Niloticus crocodile killed in the most heinous way to make this Hermes bag, but the Earth was also torn up to get its gold and diamond hardware. It’s one of the most expensive handbags in the world, fetching nearly $300,000 at a Hong Kong sale, according to the auction house Christie’s, who sold the bag. Just goes to show money can’t buy good taste, but it certainly can help contribute to species extinction and planetary destruction.
