SWITCH THE STREAM is about the urge for constant change. About the brain’s addiction to the new. About the firm conviction that — with time — becomes knocked over and makes place for a new one. About the suppressed tradition that becomes transformed into a new ideal. The Chris Maene Straight Strung Grand Piano has a very specific sound that (for a modern ear) projects in a peculiar way. The bringing back and combining of a few important historical piano-building techniques in a modern instrument is something that inspires me and motivates me to experiment with. Coming out of an intense period with pianofortes, I could continue into a further stage of composition and improvisation. There, I sensed something musically on which I could continue to build through the process of making this album. Out of the varying flows of the moment, tracks arise with different emotional zones. Melodically, harmonically and rhythmically there are heights and depths that emerge in the universe of a Werckmeister III tuning. On the cover of the album you see geese during their seasonal long distance migration from the polar region; they feel free to stretch their legs on a newly built highway. This is an image with focus on constant movement. Such as the musical direction in the moment is perceived, processed, developed, twisted, and altered. Constantly striving to capture the intangible. SWITCH THE STREAM parle de l’envie de changement constant. De l’addiction mentale à la nouveauté. De la ferme conviction qu’avec le temps, les choses changeront et laisseront la place à ce qui est neuf. De la tradition refoulée transformée en un nouvel idéal. Le Straight Strung Grand Piano de Chris Maene possède un son très spécifique qui se frotte d’une manière inhabituelle à l’oreille moderne. La réintroduction et la combinaison de certaines techniques historiques importantes de la facture de piano dans un instrument moderne m’inspire et me motive à l’exploration. Après une période intense consacrée au pianoforte, j’ai pu aller plus loin dans les domaines de la composition et de l’improvisation. Ce que j’en ai ressenti musicalement, j’ai pu l’intégrer et le développer dans cet album. Les différents flux du moment ont suscité des morceaux aux émotions variées. Des hauteurs et des profondeurs mélodiques, harmoniques et rythmiques naissent dans l’univers d’un accord Werckmeister III. La pochette de cet album montre des oies à la recherche de lieux où se poser, selon la saison, durant leur long voyage depuis la région polaire, qui se sentent libres de se dégourdir les jambes sur une autoroute tout juste achevée. Cette image est tout entière consacrée à un mouvement constant. Tout comme la direction musicale du moment est toujours observée, traitée, développée, déformée et modifiée. SWITCH THE STREAM gaat om de drang naar constante verandering. Om de verslaving van de hersenen aan het nieuwe. Om de vaste overtuiging die mettertijd wordt omvergekegeld en plaats maakt voor een nieuw. Om de onderdrukte traditie die wordt omgevormd tot een nieuw ideaal. De Chris Maene Straight Strung Grand Piano heeft een zeer specifieke klank die zich (voor een modern oor) in een ongebruikelijke weg wringt. Het terug inbrengen en combineren van enkele belangrijke historische pianobouwtechnieken in een modern instrument is iets dat mij inspireert en motiveert om mee te exploreren. Uit een vorige intense periode met de pianoforte kon ik naar een verder stadium op vlak van compositie en improvisatie. Wat ik daar muzikaal aanvoelde kon ik meenemen en verder bespelen in dit album. De verschillende flows van het moment zorgen voor tracks met uiteenlopende emotionele zones. Melodisch, harmonisch en ritmisch zijn er hoogtes en dieptes die ontstaan in het universum van een Werckmeister III stemming. Op de cover van het album ziet u ganzen die seizoensgebonden andere oorden opzoeken tijdens hun lange trektocht vanuit het poolgebied, en zich dan zo vrij te voelen om even de benen te strekken op een net aangelegde autostrade. Dit is een beeld waarin constante beweging centraal staat. Zoals ook de muzikale richting in het moment steeds wordt waargenomen, verwerkt, ontwikkeld, verdraaid, en veranderd.
