In honor of CPE Bach’s 300th birthday, hänssler CLASSIC will be releasing an exciting series of recordings dedicated to the music of this wellknown but hitherto neglected Bach son during the first 3 months of 2014. At the beginning there are the so-called “Hamburg” symphonies Wq 182, interpreted with great sensitivity and bite, when necessary, by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under the renowned conductor and former violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Wolfram Christ. Maestro Christ sees these works as expressive pieces, open to multiple interpretations that invite the listener to experience them as almost Romantic in their gesture and content.

Deciding on a fortepiano continuo instrument is not only a historically informed decision, but contributes to a perfectly balanced overall sound.

ACC 24192 L‘ARPA DI PARTENOPE Harp Music from Early Baroque Naples Works by Trabaci, Lambardo, Mayone, et al.

Magret Köll, arpa doppia According to the saga, the sirens plunged from the cliffs into the sea after Odysseus failed to lure them to their doom. Parthenope was washed ashore dead from the Bay of Naples and buried there. Ever since, she has been venerated as the patron goddess of the city, and continues to beguile the residents of Naples with her music: «Imagine that you are hearing a wonderful harpist in the fog of the night or from far away, a harpist whom you cannot see. After several brief chords played in order to test the instrument’s tuning, the most graceful and ornate works sound forth ...»

The harpist Margret Köll takes this description by Padre Daniello Bartoli from the year 1659 as her point of departure for a tone painting with harp music in Naples during the 16th and 17th centuries. With a great deal of knowledge, she introduces a harp repertoire that has hardly ever been played before, including compositions of Trabaci, de Maque, Mayone and Gesualdo. She interprets them in the light of her wide experience in the field of historically informed performance practice: this is harp music that goes far beyond all the familiar clichés!

ACC 24285 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - CONCERTOS for various instruments Il Gardellino ; Jan de Winne, traverso solo Emmaniel Balssa, violoncello solo Marcel Ponseele, oboe solo When people spoke of the «great Bach» during the 18th century, they were not referring to Johann Sebastian but to his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, one of the chief representatives of the Empfindsamer Stil (Sensitive Style). He was in the service of Frederick the Great for over 30 years as harpsichordist and chamber musician. Bach’s compositions, however, were not particularly appreciated at the rather conservative court – the works of Quantz or the Graun brothers met with greater favour there. Thus Bach composed primarily for the academies in the considerably more open-minded Berlin salons of the nobility and the bourgeoisie.

Although works for keyboard instruments are the main focus of his production, over the course of his long career he also wrote more than 50 instrumental concertos in which the entire expressive range of his original music can also be clearly perceived. Just in time for the composer’s 300th birthday, Il gardellino is presenting a small selection of these on this CD. Alongside the Cello Concerto, H. 432 and the Oboe Concerto, H.466, we can also hear the Flute Concerto, H.482/1, a work that was rediscovered in Kiev as recently as 2001.

AECD 1335 Brian Ferneyhough - Complete Works for String Quartet &Trios Arditti Quartet – Claron McFadden On the occasion of its 40th anniversary (1974-2014), the Arditti Quartet, one of the most famous groups in contemporary music, has chosen to record, for the second time — and this is an occurrence sufficiently rare that it bears emphasizing —, the complete string quartets of Brian Ferneyhough. The pieces on these discs immediately weave an auditory spell and well illustrate this composer’s brand of complexity, i.e., writing reputed to be unplayable for the instrumentalists but providing a definite pleasure for the listener, caught up in the headiness of a universe without limits or vanishing point. This 3-CD set will not only be one of the indispensable releases of 2014 but also the best way to apprehend the music of a fundamental composer whose intense writing, emancipated heir of Schoenberg, remains radically expressive, chaotic in appearance but sublimated here by the freedom and excellence of the interpretation.

On Easter Day in the year 1043, King Edward the Confessor was crowned in Winchester Cathedral. Nearly 10 centuries later, the six women’s voices of Discantus bring back to life the nascent polyphonies that were being written at the time in England: between Gregorian chant and organized two-part pieces, here we are at the beginnings of counterpoint and the practice of discantus (descant). These compositions are drawn from the Winchester Tropary, one of the most fabulous musical testimonies of the era, with most of the pieces selected centred on the Paschal period.

In mirror are inserted, like two shimmering stained-glass windows framed in the Romanesque stone, two compositions from today, commissioned by the ensemble on texts excerpted from Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy (c.524). These works, by two young composers – a Frenchman (Pierre Chépélov, born 1979) and a Briton (Joel Rust, born 1989) –, extend the musical exchanges that existed between the great island and the continent throughout the Middle Ages.

For his first recording on the Alpha label, Sergey Kasprov, a young Russian artist trained at the Moscow Conservatory, defies the laws of time. He has in fact chosen to create a dialogue between great Baroque geniuses and Russian Romantics: Rameau, Lully, Loeillet, Bach and Scarlatti revised by Tausig, Godowsky and Rachmaninov.

In the tradition of Marcelle Meyer, Glenn Gould or, more recently, Alexandre Tharaud, Sergey Kasprov pulls off the tour de force of freeing himself from ‘Baroque’ interpretative codes and, at the same time, from those of the 19th century, to better get back to the essential. The excellent recording quality attests ideally to the discourse, respectful of the original counterpoint as well as unfailing digital dexterity necessitated by appropriate ornamentation and the amazing sound palette required by late Romanticism, all on a Steinway contemporary with Rachmaninov. A new talent, an Alpha discovery!

AN28765 Mozart’s “Happy Medium”: two concertos (K.414 and K.415) KARIN KEI NAGANO with the Cecilia String Quartet Fifteen year-old pianist Karin Kei Nagano, daughter of Maestro Kent Nagano and pianist Mari Kodama, has opened a new chapter in her young and already brilliant career. And she has chosen ANALEKTA to mark this important milestone. The Canadian label is therefore very pleased to announce the release of pianist Karin Kei Nagano’s debut album.

Winner of several international prizes, Karin Kei Nagano already displays an outstanding track record: first prize and special jury prize at the International Scriabin Competition (2007); first prize and best interpretation prize at the Berlin International Competition (2007) and first prize at the Anton Rubinstein International Competition (2009-2010). She has also already gone on several international tours.

Supported by the incredible Canadian ensemble Cecilia String Quartet, known worldwide for their expressiveness and generous sound, pianist Karin Kei Nagano gives a personal rendition that is as brilliant as it is elegant of two piano concertos by Mozart: K.414 (in A major) and K.415 (in C major).

You will hear on this new album ten pieces, five of which are original compositions inspired by world music. Above all, this album is meant as a tribute to various artists, such as folk jazz guitarist Nick Naffin, a.k.a “Der Prinz” (hence the album’s title), who died in 2012. The trio pays tribute to him in a brilliant and vibrant way with the piece “Le Renard”, with arrangements made by Marc Morin and Guy Donis.

A force to be reckoned with, the trio carries on with the diversity that sets them apart by accumulating more sources of inspiration. Here are three guitarists, Marc Morin, Sébastien Dufour and Glenn Lévesque, “spoiling” themselves by generously spreading their joy of music while revisiting some pieces by influential artists, such as: their favourite band Radiohead’s Weird Fishes (from the album In Rainbows); an offthe-wall instrumental version of Jorane’s Mr. Piment; the legendary Canadian group Rush with their classic Tom Sawyer; and last but not least, Ennio Morricone, whose influence can be heard throughout their album, with the unforgettable music from the famous movie Cinema Paradiso.

In 31 March 2014 the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) releases the second disc on its new record label AAM Records. Recorded after a sold-out Barbican performance in 2013, the disc offers a rare chance to hear Bach’s St John Passion in the original 1724 version. Tenor James Gilchrist as the Evangelist leads a cast including Sarah Connolly and Matthew Rose.

Scored for a small orchestra and containing less elaborate melodic writing than later revisions, the original 1724 version gives an intimacy to this most impassioned and dramatic account of the Passion story. Further tracks available online illustrate the development of the St John Passion throughout Bach’s lifetime, including the chorus which opens the 1725 version – “O Mensch, bewein” – and alternative scorings of the chorus “Wir haben keinen König” with different combinations of wind and stringed instruments.

This recording was made possible through the participation of AAM supporters worldwide, who contributed towards a crowdfunding campaign to make up the remaining sum needed for the recording to happen after a significant initial donation – with every gift matched by Arts Council England. In total more than 170 people contributed over £7,000 towards this recording.

In Paradiso contains sacred and moral music from the Italian early baroque, for soprano and basso continuo. Here we can find some of the greatest masterwoks from Seicento’s sacred music, like Merula’s “Canzonetta Spirituale sopra alla Nanna” or Ferrari’s “Cantata Spirituale”, combined with some lighter -and never before edited and/or performed- anonymous’ moral songs which warn us about the danger of not being virtuous.

Reissue of one of the most successful recording by Zefiro (2004), which seems to have had only very limited release previously: arrangements for 13 instruments (i.e. the same scoring as the Gran Partita) by Zefiro’s oboist leader Alfredo Bernardini of music from the three great Da Ponte operas: Le nozze di Figaro K492, Don Giovanni K527, Così fan tutte K588.

His career as a composer began in 1934, when Alfredo Casella conducted his Partita for orchestra at the Festival of the International Society for New Music in Amsterdam. Petrassi’s ensuing recognition led to him taking over central positions in Italy’s music scene of the time. From 1937 to 1940, he was the general director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice; from 1947 to 1950, he directed the Accademia Filarmonica Romana and from 1954 to 1956 he was head of the International Society for New Music. He commenced his teaching as a member of the Accademia S. Cecilia, and after 1939 he worked as a composition teacher at the conservatoire, where he finally took over the master class for composition in 1960. He died in Rome in 2003 at the age of 98.

“The general theme of this recording,” observes tenor Thomas Michael Allen, “is of things far away and a sense of being out of place, especially in terms of composers setting texts in languages not their own, or texts about places far from them; a longing for, or fascination with, foreign things or foreign styles.”

Indeed, Far Away includes songs by four European composers who were living, or would live, in the United States; an American setting French poems written by an Austrian; a French composer imagining eighteenth-century Italy; and a German in Vienna writing of a man’s longing for his distant beloved. Mr. Allen, too, is “far away.” The American singer has lived and worked in Germany since 1995. The funny thing is that I don’t really feel like I completely fit in here either, but at least here my role is clear: I’m a foreigner.” Estrangement takes many forms.

The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart is one of the few choirs enjoying an international reputation. Even 30 years ago, Roger Norrington surprised audiences with his historically informed interpretations of Romantic music. 094.225 Géza Anda plays Bartók and Tchaikovsky - Concertos 1973 & 1950 Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR), Ferdinand Leitner (Conductor), Hans Müller-Kray (Conductor), Géza Anda (Piano) Géza Anda single-handedly helped the Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto attain a truly international breakthrough – in Salzburg in1952 -; this CD offers his first public performance of the work in 1950. This recording allows a fascinating insight into the beginnings of a lifelong passion and shows why Anda was predestined to become the paramount representative of this concerto. Even as a very young man, Anda had performed the Tchaikovsky first, but in later years this most famous of all piano concertos only sporadically appeared on his programs. This recording from 1973 documents a blissful evening; sound, touch and phrasing always remain flexible and differentiated with all the desire of overflowing – life-affirming gestures. A subtle, burnished tone of exquisite beauty and sublime serenity informs his interpretation of the Intermezzo in E flat major, Op 117, No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, performed by Anda as an encore following the Tchaikovsky Concerto, opening up the very poetic essence of this late Brahms work.

Johanna Martzy had played these works often and took her time before marking her studio recordings for EMI (with Paul Kletzki) – but in terms of creative power, these LIVE performances truly capture the spark of her genius.

Sammartini : Virtuoso Sonatas for Recorder 1707 – 1733 Daniel Rothert (Recorder), Luca Quintavalle (Harpsichord) The music on this extraordinary compilation of late baroque recorder pieces come from a collection of the then Viceroy of Naples, Aloys Thomas Raimund von Harrach, an Austrian diplomat who collected these manuscripts from 1707 to 1733. A part of this collection is now located in New York, and it contains the largest collection of solo flute literature from Naples.

Many of these important works on this CD are receiving their first recordings.

The two young performers Daniel Rothert and Luca Quintavalle are excellent musicians with a precise knowledge of these unique works and display a sense of joy in presenting this virtuoso repertoire.

Beethoven: String Quartets op. 18/2, 18/4, 95 Minetti Quartett The young Austrian Minetti Quartett follow up their first two hänssler CLASSIC releases of works by Haydn and Mendelssohn with works from the pen of the Grand Master of the String Quartet: Ludwig van Beethoven. Two early works from Opus 18, the 4th in the tragic key of C minor and the 2nd in a serene G major, frame the stormy “Quartetto serioso” op 95 in F minor. The unprejudiced naturalness and the multifaceted articulation of these four musicians is presented to fullest advantage in these expressive works, once again showcasing the outstanding musicianship of this young quartet.

Historical performance pioneer, Trevor Pinnock, conducts the Royal Academy of Music Soloists Ensemble in the premiere recording of Anthony Payne’s new arrangement of Bruckner’s second symphony. This is the second in the series which sees Trevor and the Academy perform and record works which are retrospectively reigniting Schoenberg’s vision of performing chamber reductions of symphonic repertoire.

This brand new edition was commissioned by Royal Academy of Music Principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood who asked composer Anthony Payne (of Elgar’s Third Symphony fame) if he would adopt the principles of Schoenberg’s Society in a new version of this symphony.

Whilst employing a slightly larger ensemble than the core group used by Schoenberg, this scoring serves to reveal the luminescent appeal of a little-known nineteenth-century masterpiece - whilst also extending Schoenberg’s and his pupils’ practice of refined intimacy. MELCD1002099 RUSSIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS (VOLUME I) Valentin Zverev (flute) ; Vladimir Sokolov (clarinet) ; Anatoly Demin (horn) ; Sergei Krasavin (bassoon) ; Aleksey Nasedkin (piano) Firma Melodiya presents the first disc from the series Russian Chamber Music for Wind Instruments which includes recordings of rarely performed quintets for piano and wind instruments by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Anton Rubinstein.

Despite the identical line-ups (the quintets were composed for flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano), each of the quintets reflects individual styles of their creators.

Rubinstein’s work (1855) belongs to the early period of the prominent Russian pianist, composer, conductor and a future founder of the first Russian conservatory. It is distinguished with a brightly virtuosic, concert and at the same time orchestral nature of the piano part. Rimsky-Korsakov’s quintet was composed in 1876 for a chamber music competition of the Russian Music Society. Its poor premiere was a cause of a long and unjust oblivion of this interesting piece where the part of each instrument is distinguished with convenience of performance and also virtuosity and special colouring of sound. Rimsky-Korsakov who mastered all the wind instruments deeply felt individual nature and capabilities of each timbre.

MELCD 1002102 Anton Rubinstein - The Demon Academic Choir of the USSR All-Union Radio, аrtistic director – Klavdy Ptitsa Symphony Orchestra ; of the USSR All-Union Radio, сonductor – Boris Khaikin Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Anton Rubinstein’s opera The Demon. This wonderful work which was inspired with the poem of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov and then inspired the likes of Mikhail Vrubel and Feodor Chaliapin became a milestone in the history of music theatre. Unfortunately, the opera was almost forgotten by the public and musicians, and only few of its fragments were widely known. It’s only lately that Russian and foreign opera houses have been showing a new interest in it.

Rubinstein finished the opera in 1871. One of the greatest pianists of the 19th century nicknamed “tsar of the stage”, a composer and conductor, the founder of the first ever Russian conservatory in St. Petersburg, he stood at the summit of glory and in full possession of his composing mastery. The Demon combined traditions of Russian and West European music art and did justice to the colour of Caucasus.

The opera was a great success with the public and accepted enthusiastically even by the composers of The Five, Rubinstein’s ideological “opponents”. “A superb artist”, wrote Modest Mussorgsky in a letter to Vladimir Stasov.

MELCD 1002108 F. Chopin - Etude s. Op . 10 & Op . 25 Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano Frédéric Chopin’s etudes are a unique combination of virtuoso technique and artistic supertasks. It is not without reason that no compulsory programme of any international competition can do without them. Each of the etudes is an ‘exercise’ in one of the types of piano technique while sounding like a bright and image-bearing piece. Twelve etudes of Op. 10 were composed during 1828–1832 and dedicated to Franz Liszt. Twelve etudes of Op. 25 were published in 1836. Nearly all pianists of the world have Chopin’s etudes in their repertoire, but only a few of them have the courage to play both of the opuses in their entirety. Firma Melodiya presents twenty-four etudes by Chopin performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy, one of the greatest pianists of modern times.

What makes these recordings especially interesting is that they were made in 1959 by then a 22-year-old pianist.

Firma Melodiya present a set of symphonies by Vadim Salmanov, a remarkable representative of the Leningrad composing school.

“He organically combines unconditional sings of the contemporary music language – freshness, simplicity, willfulness, multilayer concepts and genuine harmonicity… Speculativeness and sketchiness are totally alien to Salmanov’s music. One can sense the sincerity of a living feeling and inspired fly of fancy in it…Strictness and manliness are inherent in it.”

These words were written by one of the greatest Russian conductors Evgeny Mravinsky who headed the Honoured Collective of the Republic, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society, the best symphony orchestra of the USSR, for fifty years. The symphonies performed by the orchestra at the Big Hall of the philharmonic society are featured in this set.

MELCD 10 02119 Vadim Salmanov - Symphonies Nos 1–4 The Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society conducted by Yevgeny Mravinsky

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of one of Sergey Prokofiev’s least frequently performed operas Semyon Kotko. It was the first opera Prokofiev composed after he returned to the Soviet Union. It took him long to find a source for the plot. “I wanted to have living people with their passions, love, hate, joy and sorrow naturally ensuing from the new conditions”, the composer remembered. Prokofiev eventually chose a novel titled “I, Son of Working People” by Valentin Katayev who agreed to rework it into an opera libretto. Vsevolod Meyerhold, a director, old friend and companion, was supposed to stage the new opera but he fell victim to the Stalinist terror.

The opera was premiered in 1940 in Moscow and just as it was the case with some other outstanding works of that time was a great success with the public and severely criticized ‘from above’. Even today, bright and figurative music of Semyon Kotko with its genuinely Gogol-esque humour and genre scenes from everyday life of a Ukrainian village, neat descriptions of the characters, passionate dramatism and monumental chorus scenes cannot leave a keen listener indifferent.

MEL LP 0015 Pyotr Tchaikovsky - EVGENY SVETLANOV (Lim Ed. Vol I) The USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra ; Conductor Evgeny Svetlanov “A symphony is the most lyrical of all music forms,” wrote Tchaikovsky to his friend Nadezhda von Meck. The young composer finished his first symphony in 1866, soon after he moved to Moscow where he became a professor of a newly established conservatory, a cheerless winter road, a Christmas ball and merriment of Shrovetide…

Many pages of the symphony titled Winter Dreams are indeed associated with poetic winter landscapes, pictures of snow-covered plains and merriment of the Pancake week. However, the programme of the symphony lacks a specific plotline and does not chain the listener’s fancy carrying him away with a flow of lurical emotions and bright genre images.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 is performed by one of the best orchestras of Russia, the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov. The recording presented by Firma Melodiya was made in 1967.

OMM0093 Philip Glass – How Now/Strung Out Philip Glass This new release from Orange Mountain Music presents Philip Glass’ first concert ever in what the composer considers his “debut.” The concert took place on May 19, 1968 at the Film Makers Cinematheque at 80 Wooster Street in Soho, New York City.

The performance was the first “all-Glass” concert ever and featured solo works and duets with visual elements. This recording captures two of the solo works on the program including Glass himself performing How Now for solo organ and Strung Out for solo amplified violin performed by the legendary Dorothy Pixley-Rothchild for whom Glass had previously written a violin concerto for in 1960. It was soon after this concert that Glass started his own ensemble for which he wrote many new works.

Consequently many of the works from this ‘pre-Philip Glass Ensemble’ period were not performed for a long time.

Strung Out has the sheet music strung out in an L shape and the performer walks along the music as he/she goes farther into the piece. This is the oldest recording of any kind of Glass’ early music.

This piece was the first collaboration between Glass and didgeridoo player Mark Atkins. The two would later work together on ORION. This world premiere recording of the piece is performed and produced by Michael Riesman, organist and music director of the Philip Glass Ensemble.

The Brockes-Passion can be considered the archetype of the German Passion oratorio.

As such, it served as a model and source of inspiration for famous later masterpieces, enjoying uninterrupted popularity throughout the 18th century when no less than 11 composers, including Handel and Telemann, set it to music. The superb version by Reinhard Keiser (1674-1739) is not only the first but also adheres most closely to the great rhetorical power and rich changes of affects of the poet’s text. In German literary history, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747) is known above all for his innovative role during the second quarter of the 18th century. In 1712, the year of the BrockesPassion’s first performance, Keiser, fellow citizen of Brockes in Hamburg, was already recognized as the most important opera composer in Germany – and, in some opinions, even in Europe. When the genius of these two great artists combined in a single work, the result could only be spectacular. The tricentennial of its first performance justified a belated but nonetheless dithyrambic tribute, here presented by the singers of the Vox Luminis ensemble and the instrumentalists of Les Muffatti.

Ulisse all’isola di Circe was the first opera to be staged in the Southern Netherlands. It was first performed in Brussels on the occasion of Philip IV of Spain’s wedding to Maria-Anna of Austria on 24 February 1650 although we know that the spectacle was revived in 1655 at the express wish of Queen Christina of Sweden. Gioseffo Zamponi was most likely born in Rome between 1610 and 1620; he made his career in the Southern Netherlands, entering the service of Archduke Leopold-Wilhelm, governor of the Netherlands, in 1648, for whose establishment he composed sacred music and also played. Ulisse was composed in the new Venetian style and made use of clearly defined character types. The opera not only blends the recitar cantando style with arias but also alternates theatricality with episodes charged with emotion; the splendour of such a rediscovery fired every musician who took part in the work’s resurrection with enthusiasm. Such a large-scale project as this required the participation of all three ensembles that are regularly led by Leonardo Garcia Alarcón. The Clematis ensemble had first presented the first modern performance of the opera in 2006 as part of the Printemps Baroque du Sablon in Brussels.

It has a long tradition that jazz musicians find inspiration in the pop culture. In bebop days jazz artists experimented with the songs of musicals, Miles Davis in the 70ties and 80ties checked the rock and pop corner (Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson).

For many kids, and young adults the melodies of Video Games have become a new kind of standards.

He wants it to groove and crackle:“ Pure jazz wasn’t my thing”, he says, his music should burst with energy and consequently he embeds his solos and improvisations into a compressed load of soul and funk.

Hip-Hop is another element added as Merseny holds. “Whether it’s good hiphop or not, the guys always succeed to have a solid bang behind it.” Already two years ago Max proved that power of soul with his debut “Thank Y’All”.

Founded in 2005 by singer and composer Andreas Schaerer, this Swiss sextet has already grown a beard and started to stay out late. Schaerer’s compositions slip through any easy attempts at categorization as easily as a trout squirms free of a fisherman’s hands. The group was finally brought ashore in 2007, when they released their first album. The reviews were glowing, sales were brisk, and the album had to be re-released after being sold out in a couple of months. Since then, the band has traveled thousands of kilometers on the Autobahn, drank many a liter of gas station coffee, and played more solos and refrains than they care to remember. They’ve tickled the fancies of audiences and expert juries alike.
