Labels of the Month Christophorus carries a wide ranging musical programme and is at the same time the name of the oldest German record label concentrating on «sacred music». Christophorus was found in 1935 to disseminate religious teachings by means of records and books during the Nazi regime. Today - more than 70 years later - spiritual themes continue to be central to the work, with particular emphasis on unknown repertoire and historical interpretation. Gregorian chant, sacred vocal works, the music of the christian churches and the hymns of Taize are all represented in the catalogue. Another major element in the programme is the music of the middle ages and the renaissance. In this field, Christophorus is now recognized as one of the most important independent labels on the international market.
Spain’s most international label, widely considered the world’s finest in early music, has its headquarters in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in the mountains near Madrid. Founded in 1992 by Carlos Céster and the brothers José Miguel and Emilio Moreno, it is a landmark not only on account of its extreme artistic coherence - with great names in early music among its exclusive performers, such as Paolo Pandolfo, La Venexiana, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, Le Concert Spirituel, Michael Noone, or the Moreno brothers themselves but also because of its always innovative and exquisite formal proposals, such as the introduction of digipaks into classical music or, more recently, the presentation of the Glossa Platinum collection, with its avantgarde design. One of its most salient current projects is the integral recording of the madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi with La Venexiana under the direction of Claudio Cavina
The Swiss recording company «Pan Classics» was founded in 1992 by the music firm Pan in Zurich and was acquired by the recording engineers Clément Spiess and Koichiro Hattori in 1997. Since then, the company has been located in Vevey, on Lake Geneva. In 2011, the decision was made to undertake a radical new beginning with a new design and new artists as Arthur Schooenderwoerd, Ars Antiqua Austria/Gunar Letzbor, Musica Fiata/Roland Wilson, United Continuo Ensemble a.o.

ACC 24287 ROME – PARIS – MADRID European Baroque Guitar Music by Bartolotti, de Visée, Sanz, Granata et al. Pierre Pitzl, Baroque guitar After the guitar had just recently been more or less «invented» in Spain (for this reason it was called guitarra espanola or chitarra spagnuola), it did not take long for it to start its triumphal march through all of Europe in the mid-17th century. The guitarist Pierre Pitzl presents this development on his first solo CD for Accent in exemplary fashion, using the examples of three musical centres and composers active there: Granata and Bartolotti in Rome, De Visée and Corbetta in Paris as well as Sanz and Gerau in Madrid. The image resulting from this is a highly variegated one: only a strummed instrument in the beginning, the guitar soon developed a highly differentiated technique consisting of both strumming and plucking. In this way, a new style of composition and sound was created hand in hand with a previously unheard-of, bold treatment of dissonances. The attraction of this CD is found precisely in this variety and high technical standard. Pierre Pitzl satisfies these demands with impressive bravura, for he is a master - more so than hardly any of his peers - of the «mixed style» with its subtle alternation between strumming and plucking.
ACC 24290 Francesco Ratis - DIALOGHI CON L‘ANGELO Dramatic Cantatas & Popular Songs (1657) Samuelis/Okamura/Vizthum/Dietz/Speer ; Nouvo Aspetto ; Michael Dücker
There was a rumour in circulation the famous «Passacalli della Vita» – a genuine hit in the Early Music scene – was not an original composition from the 17th century at all, but the work of a present-day musician who made this very unusual aria known. The lutenist Michael Dücker has attempted to get to the bottom of this story, and obtained a copy of the printed edition ostensibly containing the song. As things turned out, not only was the sought-for aria original, but there were many other musical treasures hidden in this bundle of approximately 200 pages. In this printed edition of 1657, of which only a few copies survive today, Francesco Ratis, organist of the Oratorium Order at Chiavenna, compiled numerous popular and folkloristic canzonette and provided them with spiritual texts. The aim of this music was to convert the listeners with catchy melodies to dialect texts, thereby encouraging them to be pious. The most exciting and interesting item in the bundle is a type of miniature oratorio hidden at the end of the collection. It consists of four dialogues featuring angels, demons and musicians who, in each case, confront personified figures such as the soul, the world, the conscience and the body. Musically speaking, Francesco Ratis primarily transforms the dialogues in a songlike fashion. Through richly-coloured instrumentation (e.g. psalterium, harp, trombone and baroque guitar) the Ensemble Nuovo Aspetto is able to bring out the various characters in a particularly vivid manner. Several instrumental works of this period have also been included as a supplement.
Alpha 186 J.S. Bach : Sonates & Solo pour la flûte traversière Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, François Lazarevitch (cond.) Jean Rondeau – Lucile Boulanger – Thomas Dunford As director of Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, François Lazarevitch has enabled us to discover numerous treasures stemming from dance and folk music. For the first time on Alpha, he has recorded a solo album, devoted to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Flute Sonatas. His approach to these works benefits from his experience as the conductor of an ensemble, enriched by the particularly varied musical experiments he has carried out. So this disc offers us an especially interesting and singular interpretation of these treasures by Bach with a rhythmic approach not lacking in swing, and backed up, it is true, by a basso continuo featuring first-rank instrumentalists.

“BLANC (White) like purity and serenity. BLANC for luminous music that can bring interior peace through its strength and powerful evocation” says the musician. The talented Angèle Dubeau brings us a new album filled with light. “This recording tells a story, my story, the one of a women who, like so many others before, has grown and serenely come out of a battle against illness”. After months of fighting against cancer, it is music that has allowed Angèle Dubeau to stay the course through the turmoil. Here again, the internationally renown violinist shares her passion with the excellent musicians of her string orchestra, La Pietà, with whom she joyfully shares the stage since 1997. BLANC consists of 14 works from 12 composers of different horizons, all evoking the tranquil strengths and intensity of this exceptional violinist: Garry Schyman, Osvaldo Golijov, Adrian Munsey, Marjan Mozetich, Joe Hisaishi, François Dompierre, Ennio Morricone, Mark O’connor, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dave Brubeck, Cat Stevens and Shawn Phillips. FOR EACH CD SOLD, Analekta will reverse a part of the amount received to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

AN2 9990 HÄNDEL - BOIELDIEU – MOZART : Concertos pour Harpe VALÉRIE MILOT, harpist ; LES VIOLONS DU ROY, under the direction of BERNARD LABADIE
Accompanied by the talented ensemble Les Violons du Roy under Bernard Labadie’s direction, young Quebec harpist Valérie Milot presents, on this new album, classics from the harp repertoire: HÄNDEL’s Concerto in B flat major, BOIELDIEU’s Concerto in C major and MOZART’s Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra in C major, K.299. It is with obvious artistic complicity that these talented Québec musicians present, on this album, a repertoire of great significance, and three important moments in the history of this fascinating musical instrument called the harp. Valérie Milot’s very refined style is as impressive as her flawless technique and her powerful and colourful playing. Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART wrote the Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra K.299 while visiting Paris with his mother, where he was the composition professor for the Duc de Guînes’ daughter. The Duc, a flutist, requested a piece that could be performed alongside his daughter, a harpist. This exquisite concerto was added to Mozart’s catalogue, and is recorded here alongside incomparable flutist Claire Marchand. True to himself, Georg Friedrich HÄNDEL took advantage of the harp’s beautiful sounds in order to show off his own exceptional sense of colour and brilliance. Valérie Milot delivers here an outstanding performance of Handel’s magnificent Concerto in B flat major (Opus 4, no. 6).
A 373 On the Shoulders of Giants - Tracing the roots of counterpoint Palestrina – Frescobaldi – Lassus – Castello - Rosenmüller – Corelli – Bach – Mozart Ensemble Aurora – Enrico Gatti Enrico Gatti’s eighth recording for the Arcana label, and the debut album by his Ensemble Aurora in the role of string quartet, is without a doubt the most original of his discography. The result of years of research and discoveries, On the Shoulders of Giants is an exciting journey back to the roots of string quartet writing and counterpoint: from Renaissance tablatures to Mozart’s famous String Quartet in G major KV387, the first of the ‘Haydn’ Quartets, by way of Dario Castello, Johann Rosenmüller, Johann Sebastian Bach (the fourth counterpoint from The Art of Fugue) and the inevitable Corelli (Fuga a quattro voci): a concentration of beautiful music, with a programme that encompasses different periods but with a clear main theme, which Enrico Gatti describes so well in his authoritative liner notes. “A journey into the philosophy of counterpoint: through the centuries and works of some of the greatest composers, the fugue unveils the sense of a conversation in which the instruments renounce their own individuality in order to blend together in spirtual transcendence. Standing upon the shoulders of these giants of the past, we moderns can see far into the distance and forever regain our innocence...” Enrico Gatti

C5174 RICHARD WAGNER (1813 - 1883) TANNHÄUSER/ WESENDONCK-LIEDER/ TRISTAN UND ISOLDE ANNE SCHWANEWILMS, soprano ; VIENNA RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ; CORNELIUS MEISTER, conductor ,She sent him ‘cute poems about angels and dreams, even in the manner of Schopenhauer; he added a cautious melody, so as not to destroy the slender, little girl’s dreams of anguish and its beauty’. This is how Ludwig Marcuse in Das denkwürdige Leben des Richard Wagner portrays the emerging love between Mathilde and Richard and the songs associated with it. ,Take all my soul as a morning greeting!’ the composer rhapsodized in a written message to his beloved. It was a fatal letter, for Minna intercepted it and subsequently undermined the idyll. One of the most interesting voices of our time presents her first Wagner Album: Anne Schwanewilms, who just had her very sucessful Debut at Metropolitain Opera New York sings the Wesendonck-Lieder, Elisabeth Aria from Tannhäuser and first time ever her debut as Isolde for this CD Recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bir3O0P3SoE
C5198 FERRUCCIO BUSONI (1866–1924) - BACH TRANSCRIPTIONS Holger Groschopp, piano The present album is to be understood as a complement to the box of four CDs (CAPRICCIO 7015) containing transcriptions and paraphrases based on seventeen different composers. It features Bach arrangements not yet represented in that collection but does not include those works that Busoni published without exercising significant changes in his capacity as an editor. The program also includes some world premiere recordings of transcriptions the Berlin Pianist Holger Groschopp could find in the archives, and the arrangement of works by Bach also enjoyed great popularity in Busoni’s circle of pupils – as some of the world premiere recorded pieces demonstrate.

This double CD for the first time combines two possible views of the song cycle with Romances from L. Tieck’s ‘Magelone’ op. 33 by Johannes Brahms. On the one hand, the first CD offers the opportunity to listen to the song cycle without the prose text, and the second CD presents a version, in which before each of the songs a sensitive abridgement of Tieck’s text by Hans-Jürgen Schatz can be heard. The unabridged text by Ludwig Tieck would result in an overweight of the text, and the music would clearly move into the background. This was probably also a thought that Johannes Brahms had, and for this reason he may have preferred a performance without the prose text, especially as the story by Tieck was wellknown in the 19th century. With the 15 romances, Brahms reaches a new level in compositional terms. The songs seem to be uninfluenced by contemporary works, and merely Schubert’s songs might have been models in many passages. Here, the declamation close to the text must be mentioned in particular. Otherwise, Brahms moves completely independently of external influences, creating a new, almost symphonic style that is particularly seen in the preludes and postludes. Sometimes, people even speak freely about ‘Brahms’ sole opera’.

CAR 83293 Franz Schubert - LAZARUS – Oratorio (fragment) Wegener/Winkel/Harmsen / Weller/Lichdi/Berndt/Kammerchor Stuttgart/ Hofkapelle Stuttgart/Frieder Bernius
Total time : 71’00 1 CD
After the prize-winning first recording of Franz Schubert’s opera Sakontala, Frieder Bernius has now turned to his oratorio Lazarus. Although it only survives as a fragment, Lazarus is often regarded as a forerunner of Wagner’s Parsifal because of its recitative-arioso form, and still retains its place in the repertoire. For the live recording from the Bachfest Leipzig 2013, Bernius was joined by a distinguished line-up of soloists, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart.

CHR77373 SACRED MUSIC FOR THE POOR at Santa Maria in Vallicella, Rome Popular Sacred Music of Around 1600 from Rome’s Church for the Poor Concerto Romano ; Alessandro Quarta The urban district in Rome called Vallicella lies near the Tiber River, where the danger from flooding used to be greatest. Located directly at the centre of the metropolis today, the district was overpopulated during the 17th century with people living in the poorest conditions. This caused the priest and later Saint Filippo Neri to move his missionary activities to Vallicella. Still impressive today is the beautiful church Santa Maria in Vallicella in the heart of this district and the Oratorium attached to it, the centre for the order founded by Neri in which music played a fundamental role. Music was a very important medium for the missionaries in the spreading of their message, and this led to a multifaceted and very specific production of music. This repertoire, a link between sophisticated and popular music, represents an important part of Roman cultural history, also generating one of the most beautiful points of contact between simple people and art music. The ensemble Concerto Romano and their leader, Alessandro Quarta, reside in Rome; they succeed magnificently in bridging this gap anew, bringing together the two sides, so different as they were. With their collection of lauds, canzone and frottole, mixed with dance-like instrumental music, they create an incredibly vital sonic image of the seething pulse of the Holy City during the 17th century.

Ensemble Leones ; Marc Lewon Oswald von Wolkenstein: politician, diplomat, castle owner, Knight of the Reign and bon vivant... these were his «main professions» that took him to nearly all regions of the world known during his time. Today, he is primarily known for his most important «hobby» of which he was a master: he was a poet, musician and composer, a fine singer and player of diverse instruments and, ostensibly, mastered about ten languages. From no other poetcomposer of the Middle Ages has such a multi-faceted repertoire been handed down: he created real popular songs and simple, monophonic narrative songs as well as complex polyphony and refined, interlaced voice-leadings. Almost everything that was in vogue during his time can be found in his personal manuscripts – and even more: in no other sources do we find such strange yet fascinating sounds as those from his pen. For the CD «The Cosmopolitan – Songs by Oswald von Wolkenstein», Marc Lewon has compiled a programme with his Ensemble Leones that does justice to Oswald’s versatility as poet and musician. Alongside rarely heard pieces, they present a series of first recordings: these range from multilingual «macaronic» Lieder and travel descriptions to true musical gems.

CHR77379 THE COSMOPOLITAN - Songs by Oswald von Wolkenstein
CHR77382 Johann Christopher Smith (1712-1795) - THE SEASONS Emma Kirkby/Tim Mead/Hans Jörg Mammel/Markus Simon/Musica Franconia Festival Choir/La Banda/Wolfgang Riedelbauch Already 60 years before Joseph Haydn, the German composer John Christopher Smith wrote an oratorio about the seasons that was also based on the epic poem «The Seasons» by the Scottish poet James Thomson. Smith was born in 1712 in Ansbach as Johann Christoph Schmidt and emigrated with his parents to London, for his father worked as a manager and copyist for George Frederic Handel. Young Smith received his first instruction from the master personally and later became Handel’s closest working associate. He helped Handel with his composing and, when his mentor became blind, he directed performances of his oratorios. But Smith himself was also a recognised composer who was «highly appreciated by many of the ‘first heads’ in the Kingdom», as the English music scholar Charles Burney reported. His oratorio about the seasons is an imaginative tone painting in a style which extends beyond the baroque, already introducing elements of the Empfindsamer Stil (Sensitive Style). In particular, Smith’s colourful representations of nature – ranging from birdsong and the undulations of the forest to icy winter storms – are very successfully realised. They show that he was far more than just Handel’s assistant.

In this series of world premiere recordings of the symphonic music of Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974), you get to know the charming Danish composer through a genre he once tried to ‘kill off ‘, yet at the same time refused to abandon. The Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, recorded here along with the Sinfonia concertante and the entertaining Summer Rhapsody, show Riisager as a searching, unprejudiced composer for whom the classical form types, despite all opposition, kept their attraction and fascination.

FUG718 John DOWLAND - Lachrimae or Seaven Teares Hathor Consort – Romina Lischka The Hathor Consort was founded in 2011 by the Austrian gambist Romina Lischka. This Brussels-based ensemble explores consort music going from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, using diverse instrumental combinations with, as a starting point, the viola da gamba. The name comes from the goddess Hathor, a female divinity of ancient Egypt, who embodied love, joy and everything having to do with the heart. For this first recording, the ensemble has chosen a pièce de résistance of the consort repertoire: the collection Lachrimae or Seven Tears by John Dowland (1563- 1626).

George Frideric Handel’s Duetti da camera from La Risonanza represent a welcome extension of the ensemble’s award-winning series of Handel solo cantatas on Glossa, and come with the luxurious vocal pairing of Roberta Invernizzi and Marina De Liso. These chamber duets – scored for soprano and alto – were written across a period spanning four decades: first, after Handel’s move to Hanover in 1710, following his remarkable Italian compositional apprenticeship which yielded quantities of cantatas, motets and instrumental chamber works; next in the 1720s, when he was writing Italian operas and music for the Court in London; and lastly when he was composing English oratorios in the 1740s. Such vocal duos had become part of an established tradition, especially in Italy, during the late 17th century. Soprano Roberta Invernizzi who has, in the last few years, been supplying Italian grace and charm to many Glossa recordings (including the recent La bella più bella) is ideally matched by Marina De Liso, whose rich mezzo tones have made her another firm audience favourite across the Baroque and Classical repertories. Fabio Bonizzoni, with his sure sense of Handel’s expressiveness and melodic facility, provides luxurious continuo support on the harpsichord across these ten chamber duets – originally written for cultured aristocrats but later composed for professional singers, as Carlo Vitali explains in his perceptive booklet essay .

GCD 922512 Martin Berteau - SONATAS & AIRS FOR VIOLONCELLO Christophe Coin, violoncello ; Petr Skalka, violoncello ; Felix Knecht, violoncello Markus Hünninger, harpsichord. Whatever composer, period or style Christophe Coin turns his attention to, it is certain to be full of interest and musicality. Such is the case with a new recording from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis – where Coin teaches – whose focus is one of the founding fathers of modern cello playing, the Frenchman active in the middle of the 18th century, Martin Berteau. Known both for training many of the important cellists from later in that century and for introducing technical innovations which extended the instrument’s range and expressiveness, Berteau’s composing voice has been very little known (some of his compositions also being confused with those by others). An ideal candidate, therefore, for a thorough-going reappraisal from a musician as talented as Christophe Coin, with the help of two of his own former cello students in Petr Skalka and Felix Knecht. Cello Sonatas and Airs make up this programme – including one sonata in which all three cellists take part. The three of them play on instruments from the epoch, whilst Markus Hünninger provides harpsichord accompaniment. In the accompanying booklet essay for this new release, Thomas Drescher traces the lifespan of Martin Berteau, an overlooked compositional figure who leads us back to the roots of an important instrument of our musical culture.
GCD 922803 Carlo Gesualdo - RESPONSORIA La Compagnia del Madrigale The Responsoria by Carlo Gesualdo, published in 1611, represent a remarkable emotional outpouring in sacred repertory from a composer who was living out his final years amidst melancholy thoughts and an increasingly precarious state of health. It was also significant that these Holy Week pieces should appear in the same year as the complex works in the Sixth Book of Madrigals: an association which La Compagnia del Madrigale are keen to make with their new recording of the Responsoria in a striking new release from Glossa. Having already responded to the stylistic subjectiveness of the madrigals the highly-skilled a cappella vocal ensemble (which includes singers of the calibre and experience of Giuseppe Maletto, Daniele Carnovich or Rossana Bertini) turns its attention to subject matter covering torment, suffering, blood and death. Over three CDs Gesualdo’s creative musical response to the Passion of Christ is interspersed with spiritual madrigals from some of his best-known contemporaries (Luzzaschi, Marenzio, de Macque and Vinci), whose religious texts further underline the madrigalesque nature of the Responsoria. Once again, Marco Bizzarini supplies a fascinating booklet essay which places Gesualdo’s music in a realistic rather than “hysterical” context.

GCD 923102 Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga - THE COMPLETE STRING QUARTETS La Ritirata ; Josetxu Obregón It is no real surprise that Josetxu Obregón’s La Ritirata has recorded the string quartets of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga to follow up its earlier Early Baroque programme of Il Spiritillo Brando on Glossa: cellist Obregón’s principal teacher has been Anner Bylsma and the two musicians share a deep fascination with the music of an earlier Classical composer in Luigi Boccherini. In this new recording the Bilbao-born Obregón is joined by violinists Hiro Kurosaki and Miren Zeberio, and viola Daniel Lorenzo; the underlying spirit of La Ritirata is of an intensive consideration of musical (and other) sources before attempting fresh interpretations of scores. This is precisely what the musicians have done for this survey of Arriaga’s quartet output for Glossa – they have also included the Tema variado en cuarteto, Op 17 – in order to get closer to the sound world of the Spanish composer who left his native Basque Country at the age of 15 to study and compose in Paris in 1821. Five short years of life remained to him before an untimely death ended a hugely promising career.

The Berceuse Op. 83 ranks amongst Bowen’s most intimate scores, while the sophisticated Suite Mignonne demands the most delicate of touches from the pianist. CRISTINA ORTIZ The Brazilian pianist Christina Ortiz followed her Gold Medal win at the 3rd Van Cliburn International Piano Competition with an invaluable period of tuition under the guidance of the legendary Rudolph Serkin. Her natural musicality and masterful craftsmanship have secured her a place among the most respected pianists in the world, both as a recitalist, concerto soloist and teacher. Douze Romances en forme d’études, Op. 8 was written when he was just 21 and unsure whether to commit himself to full-time composition. Mendelssohn was so impressed by the set of charming character pieces that he recommended them to his own publisher. The much later 1871 La Cicerenella – Nouveau Carnaval, Op. 165 is a set of virtuoso variations, whilst the Two Pieces, Op. 166 offer both charm and melodic distinction. TRA NGUYEN British-Vietnamese pianist Tra Nguyen gave her first performance at the Hanoi Opera House when she was ten and has continued to engage audiences in other important venues worldwide. She studied with Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory and with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
93.722 Witold Lutosławski: String Quartet (1964) ; Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet F Major Op. 59 No. 1 Alban Berg Quartett For almost four decades, from 1970 to 2008, the Viennese Alban Berg Quartet was one of the most successful string quartets in the world. From their first recordings in 1974 on, the ensemble frequently found themselve in the spotlight, receiving exuberant praise and winning multiple awards. The reason for their worldwide success lay both in their outstanding virtuosity and their unerring ability to perform live with the same precision and exactitude of a studio recording. Their playing influenced an entire generation of subsequent quartets and the ABQ - as they have affectionately come to be known – have long been regarded as the ne plus ultra of both Viennese classical and modern music. This recording comes from a concert at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival on 28 April 1978. At that time, Gerhard Schulz had freshly taken over as second violinist from Klaus Mätzl and was already arrived fully settled in his new role. Both works - Beethoven and Lutosławski are in their own individual way, a challenge for any quartet. A challenge the ABQ mastered brilliantly.

Josef Suk, János Starker and Rudolf Buchbinder made guest appearance at the Schwetzingen SWRFestival in 1973 – three internationally known, even famous presented two of the most celebrated works of the piano trio repertoire. Suk and Starker had previously enjoyed great success in the 1960s as a piano trio together with pianist Julius Katchen, prior to his death in 1969. For this concert from May 1973, the two experienced instrumentalists chose the then only 27-year-old Rudolf Buchbinder as their pianist. Their decision has become one of the great moments of chamber music-making, full of sensitive – and when necessary – forceful musicmaking. This is also a fitting tribute to the late cellist János Starker, whom we lost last year.

However, the gentleman from Cuba’s success in interpreting Liszt goes beyond the purely technical virtuosity; his playing is imbued with a noble sense of design rather than pure pianist pyrotechnics. So Bolet opened this evening from Schwetzingen 1988 – two years before his death – with a rarely performed work: Mendelssohn‘s Prelude and Fugue Op. 35.1. In his reading of Liszt’s “Norma reminiscences” – a piece mastered by only a few virtuosos – Bolet convincingly gives life to the opera’s characters using a purely instrumental voice. And that this super-virtuosic program includes pieces by Leopold Godowsky should come as no surprise; Godowsky was the young Bolet’s mentor in Philadelphia. Simply put, this CD offers an exceptional concert by a virtuoso, whose personal modesty made him the ideal servant of the music.
98.034 Antonio Vivaldi: Solo Concertos RV 99 | 429 | 504 | 417 | 106 | 450 | 107 Barocksolisten München 18th-century Venice had a unique system of social support that brought great economic, social and cultural benefits to the “Floating City“. Among the services offered Venice’s poor were a network of orphanages, including the Ospedale della pietà which served as the highest-ranking school of music in the eighteenth century. It was here that Antonio Vivaldi composed his many concertos for «his» orphan girls. The orchestra and Vivaldi himself became increasingly famous throughout Europe. The musicians of the orchestra were masters of their craft, as you can hear from the quality and technical demands made on the players. Whether it’s the Bassoon Concerto RV 504, the Oboe Concerto RV 450, the Chamber Concerto RV 99 or the Flute Concerto RV 429, - the highest level of expression is always required in addition to the sheer virtuosity, and the Baroque Soloists Munich approaches each challenge without hesitation or compromise. This is a beautifully performed CD featuring a program of rare and exquisite works from the pen of the “Red Priest.”

‘Opus 1 & 3: Church Sonatas’ is the final recording in The Avison Ensemble’s welcome undertaking to record Corelli’s complete chamber music in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the composer’s death. A fittingly satisfying finale to the series, Corelli’s church sonatas are exquisite, highly refined compositions representing a high point of Italian Baroque instrumental music. Corelli’s contribution to the history of violin performance was immense. All six of his published collections of instrumental music demonstrate his exceptional skill as a violinist and composer. The series has been greeted with wide critical acclaim: Opus 2 & 4 was named ‘Recording of the Month’ by Musicweb International which also named Opus 6 a 2012 ‘Recording of the Year’, whilst Opus 5 was awarded 4½ stars by BBC Music Magazine who praised Beznosiuk’s ‘intuitively musical performances.’ Formed in 1985, the Ensemble has attracted great critical acclaim. The Guardian commented: ‘I’d take the Avison Ensemble over Karajanany day’. The Avison Ensemble comprises some of Europe’s leading Baroque musicians, including artists from The Hague, Germany, France, Austria and London, with international soloists from all over the globe. Pavlo Beznosiuk, the UK’s foremost Baroque violin virtuoso, is in demand as a soloist and orchestral leader performing regularly with the Academy of Ancient Music and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

The Dunedin Consort presents the premiere recording of Mozart scholar David Black’s new 2013 edition of Süssmayr’s completion of Mozart’s Requiem. In keeping with several other Dunedin projects, this provides the opportunity to re-imagine what this work may have sounded like at its very first performance. To this end, the recording will be the first not only to use this new edition, but also to present the work using forces close in style and scale to those at the first performances. One striking element of these performances is the fact that the soloists are also the leaders of the choir, thus giving a greater consistency to the relationship between the solo numbers and the choruses. Dunedin Consort seeks to resurrect Süssmayr’s much maligned edition to its place and worth in history. Taking centre stage are soloists Joann Lunn soprano, Rowan Hellier alto, Thomas Hobbs tenor and Matthew Brook bass-baritone. The Dunedin Consort has established a reputation as one of the finest period performance choirs around, under the direction of prize-winning historical performance specialist John Butt OBE. The multi-award-winning Dunedin Consort has won praise for the natural style of its soloists and renown for the virtuosity of its singers. Since receiving a Gramophone Award in 2007, Dunedin Consort has continued to receive accolades.
MELCD 100 2126 YURI BUTSKO - WHITE NIGHTS Galina Pisarenko (Nastenka) ; Anatoly Mishchevsky (The Dreamer) ; The Big Symphony Orchestra ; of All-Union Radio and Television conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky “The best traditions of domestic music culture live on in Yuri Butsko’s deeply national music,” wrote Music in the USSR magazine. When a student of the Moscow Conservatory, Butsko composed the opera Diary of a Mad Man after Nikolai Gogol (1963) which subsequently became generally recognized. Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Yuri Butsko’s opera White Nights based on a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Giving his opera a subtitle “sentimental”, the composer emphasized its lyric and intimate orientation as if continuing the line of Tchaikovsky’s “lyric scenes”. Moreover, White Nights is a chamber opera where the events are given through a lyric narration and the monologues of its two characters Nastenka and Dreamer who is in love with her create a basis of the dramatic concept. Following Mussorgsky’s and Prokofiev’s traditions, the composer preserved Dostoyevsky’s original prosaic text revealing a peculiar poetic musicality of the great writer’s early romantic novel. White Nights was premiered in Dresden in 1968 to a great success, however it has never been staged in this country. The recording was made by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, a recognized interpreter of 20th century music, and the All-Union Radio Big Symphony Orchestra in 1973 with the participation of Galina Pisarenko and Anatoly Mishchevsky, People’s Artists of the RSFSR and soloists of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre.

The name of Rudolf Barshai signifies a new page in domestic music culture of the 20th century. A talented violist with a promising concert career, he managed to found the first ever Soviet chamber orchestra. In the times of the Iron Curtain, Soviet listeners were almost unaware of that particular sphere of musical performance. Barshai’s concert programmes, the sound of his orchestra which collected talented musicians who sought for new ways were a true revelation to the public. The Moscow Chamber Orchestra became immensely popular during the first years of its existence. The orchestra always played to capacity crowds, and its numerous records sold many thousands of copies. Some of the leading Soviet artists such as Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, Mstislav Rostropovich and others collaborated with Barshai’s orchestra taking part in its concerts and recordings. Rudolf Barshai left the USSR in the 1970’s and for many years performed with various chamber and symphony orchestras of the world. However, these recordings realized with his Moscow Chamber Orchestra are still the most legendry page in history of Russian chamber music performance. Today, 40 years later, they still sound as lively and fresh. The soloist I Bach’s violin concertos is David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century.

Svetlanov “A wizard of the orchestra!.. A magician of orchestral sounds!.. How many unforgettable pages from Rimsky-Korsakov’s scores arise as I say it! The wonderful composer created a bright orchestral style which we with good reason call “Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestra”, wrote the patriarch of the 20th century Russian conducting school Evgeni Svetlanov. The composer developed various genres of symphonic music for forty-five years. “Conventional” four-movement symphonic cycles; one-movement programme overtures, fantasia on folk themes and “symphonic pictures” in the vein of the founder of the New Russian School Mily Balakirev; Capriccio espagnol continuing Glinka’s line; individual orchestra pieces composed “in case”… Rimsky-Korsakov did not come at once to the genre of symphonic suite, the most organic for his creative individuality, in which he created Antar and Scheherazade, two masterpieces of Russian orchestra music. Rimsky-Korsakov’s works are performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeni Svetlanov. The recordings were made in the late 1960’s – early 1980’s in the heyday of the orchestra and its outstanding leader.

A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and Balakirev, and a true successor of the traditions of The Five, Glazunov was also a great admirer of Tchaikovsky’s works and synthesized the two major traditions of the Russian music art of the 19th century in his music. Glazunov’s Violin Concerto is among the most popular works of the world’s violin literature. The other featured pieces created during the composer’s late period when he lived abroad are less known. The Concerto Ballata for cello and orchestra was ordered by and dedicated to the great cellist Pablo Casals. The Concerto for saxophone and orchestra was inspired by a performance of the National Guard orchestra in Paris.

The ideal Georgy Sviridov strived for was music for the chosen ones which belonged to the masses. His creative work was uncommon for 20th century music – he found his style yet remained inside the classical tradition without breaking it. No matter what he composed for – voice, choir or orchestra – his music went straight to the heart evoking a sensitive listener’s keen response be it a sophisticated music lover or a dilettante. Sviridov’s music revives and continues the best sides of the Russian music tradition. It is no mere chance that his best known compositions are linked with the name of Alexander Pushkin. They are the ones featured on this album. The score to the motion pictures The Blizzard after Pushkin’s novel was composed in 1964. It has outlived the film becoming a self-sufficient and incredibly popular symphonic piece from Music Illustrations to Pushkin’s Novel. Pushkin’s Garland for soloists, choir and instrumental ensemble became the composer’s offering for the poet’s 180th anniversary. This choir cycle opened a new page of Sviridov’s creative path anticipating his late vocal opuses. Sviridov’s works are performed by the AllUnion Radio Big Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, a recognized interpreter of the composer’s music, and the remarkable Moscow Chamber Choir led by Vladimir Minin.
MELCD 100 2210 EMIL GILELS IN ENSEMBLES Emil Gilels, piano ; Dmitri Tsyganov, violin ; Vadim Borisovsky, viola (1–4) ; Sergei Shirinsky, cello “The world knows many talented pianists and a few great masters who tower above them all. Emil Gilels is one of them.” - “The titans of piano like Gilels are borne once in a century.” Those were the kind of reviews that accompanied Gilels throughout his pianistic career beginning with his victory at the all-union competition in 1933 in Moscow. However, this set will open new sides to Gilels’s repertoire even to those who is well acquainted with his recordings. We will hear Emil Gilels as an ensemble musician. The titan of piano, who roused the audiences and orchestras, was able to turn into a fine chamber musician, a wonderful ensemble partner as though he dissolved his brightest individuality in a piece he performed. The more so because Gilels’s partners were truly brilliant soloists such as Yakov Flier and Yakov Zak (piano), Elizaveta Gilels (violin), musicians from the Beethoven Quartet Dmitri Tsyganov (violin), Vadim Borisovsky (viola) and Sergei Shirinsky (cello). The set features compositions from various periods. Along with well-know piano and chamber ensembles, it includes recordings of rarely performed works by Mozart arranged by Busoni, Saint-Saëns and Cui. But the previously unreleased recordings by Emil Gilels deserve a special mention. They are Suite No. 2 for piano by Rachmaninoff, Rondo four hands by Chopin, Concerto pathétique by Liszt, a suite for two pianos by Leonid Nikolayev and a piano trio by Andrei Babayev.

• Gerald Finley’s debut-album on Ondine is devoted to the music Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). It includes premiere recordings of orchestral versions of wartime works Six Romances on Verses by English Poets and the Scottish Ballad. The Six Romances was previously known only as a version for chamber orchestra arranged by the composer. However, the composer’s original version for full orchestra was just recently discovered and is included here as a premiere recording. • Also included is a premiere recording of a very late Shostakovich masterpiece: the orchestral version of Suite on Poems by Michelangelo - sung for the first time in the original Italian. The work, composed in 1975, was one of the last pieces completed by Shostakovich. • Grammy-award winning Canadian baritone Gerald Finley has become one of the leading singers and dramatic interpreters of his generation, with award-winning performances and recordings on CD and DVD with major labels and performing at the world’s major opera and concert venues in a wide variety of repertoire. • On this recording the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Thomas Sanderling, friend of the composer and a Shostakovich expert who has conducted award-winning Shostakovich premiere recordings. Sanderling was also personally involved in the process of the discovery of the versions included in this recording and conducted their premiere performances in connection to this recording.

His Kullervo opera is considered by many as his greatest achievement in the field of opera. • This re-issue includes a true stellar cast of Finnish opera singers with Jorma Hynninen singing the title role of Kullervo. Other singers in prominent roles include Eeva-Liisa Saarinen, Matti Salminen and Jorma Silvasti. • Sallinen’s opera tells the tragic story of Kullervo, a slave who is seeking to revenge the death of his parents. The libretto, written by the composer himself, is derived from the mythology of the Finnish national epic Kalevala. • Ondine recorded Sallinen’s Kullervo opera already in 1991, prior to its world premiere which took place in Los Angeles, USA, the following year. • The prestigious Savonlinna Opera Festivals will perform a new production of the Kullervo this summer which will most likely bring more attention to the work also in the international press. Aulis Sallinen will celebrate his 80th anniversary next year.

PC10301 Georg Muffat - MISSA IN LABORE REQUIES St. Florian Boys’ Choir ; Ars Antiqua Austria ; Gunar Letzbor
1 CD
Gunar Letzbor, the St. Florian Boys’ Choir and Ars Antiqua Austria are now presenting this splendid work on CD. For the recording, the Gurk Cathedral proved to be an ideal location, allowing the spatial effects of the five choirs to be impressively reproduced. The two vocal choirs can be heard to the right and left of the imaginary middle axis, as are the string and wind choirs, whilst the trumpet choir sounds forth majestically from an elevated position in the centre. In this way, one can comprehend why this monumental work represents the pinnacle of the genre – perhaps comparable only to H. I. F. Biber’s Missa Salisburgensis.

PC10302 Elam Rotem - RAPPESENTATIONE di Guiseppe e i suoi fratelli – Joseph and his brethren (Sung in Biblical Hebrew) Profeti della Quinta Using the musical language and context of the revolutionary musical dramas by Cavalieri, Caccini, and Monteverdi, the piece tells the story of Joseph and his brethren – one of the most touching stories of the Old Testament. The drama was composed by Elam Rotem especially for his ensemble Profeti della Quinta, and is set for five voices, instruments, and basso-continuo. The text is taken directly from the book of Genesis, sung in its original Hebrew (the booklet contains translations in English, French and German). As written in the preface to Emilio de Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo (1600, Rome), the aim of music is to move the feelings of the listeners: «mercy and happiness, crying and laughter». The Rappresentatione di Giuseppe e i suoi Fratelli follows this ideal, aiming to stir the emotions of the listeners - even the doubtful ones.

PC10305 C.P.E. Bach - WORKS FOR KEYBOARD & VIOLIN
Leila Schayegh and Jörg Halubek, two first-class interpreters, have embarked here upon a voyage of discovery through C. P. E. Bach’s works for violin and keyboard instruments. The Swiss baroque violinist is distinguished by her blossoming, singing tone of a great and powerful radiance, and her technique seems boundless. She has been a professor at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis since 2010 as the successor to Chiara Banchini. Jörg Halubek reveals himself to be a highly sensitive accompanist and musical partner on an equal footing at the harpsichord and the tangent piano. As a special rarity, they have recorded two sonatas in the continuo realisation by Johannes Brahms – a special greeting on the 300th birthday of C. P. E. Bach in the year 2014!
PC10309 Franz Schmidt - WORKS FOR PIANO LEFT HAND & ORCHESTRA Karl-Andreas Kolly, piano ; Sarastro Quartett ; Wiener Jeunesse Orchestre Musikkollegium Winterthur Franz Schmidt was one of the most influential personalities in Viennese musical life during the first three decades of the 20th century. A cellist and pianist who was much sought after as a chamber music partner, he played with the Vienna Philharmonic (under Gustav Mahler, amongst others), was the solo cellist of the Vienna State Opera and a member of the same string quartet with Arnold Schönberg. He later became a professor at the Vienna Music Academy - but for his second instrument, the piano - and then rector of that institution. After the deaths of Berg and Schreker and the departure of Schönberg and Zemlinsky, he was considered the most important composer in the Vienna of the 1930s; his style can be classified as a lateromantic succession to Bruckner. Schmidt wrote next to nothing for solo piano, for he «internally heard only grand symphonic music». Today, we can indeed consider ourselves fortunate that Schmidt encountered the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in the First World War and commissioned the most important composers of his time to write piano works for him for the left hand. Schmidt’s two great works for one-handed piano and orchestra – the Piano Concerto and the Beethoven Variations – are on this double CD alongside the Quintet for Piano and Strings composed for Wittgenstein. The programme is completed by the great orchestral Chaconne in C-sharp minor.
PC10310 ANONYMUS - HABSBURG VIOLIN MUSIC Ars Antiqua Austria: Erich Traxler (harpsichord, organ positive), Jan Krigovsky (violone), Hubert Hoffmann (lute) ; Gunar Letzbor The violinist Gunar Letzbor is an established specialist in performing Austrian baroque music; in particular, he has especially intensively grappled with works of Biber, Muffat and Schmelzer, to name three examples. In so doing, he is constantly searching for a specifically Austrian baroque string sound. Manuscript XIV 726 of the Minoritenkonvent in Vienna is one of the most important sources of Austrian baroque music. From the over hundred sonatas contained in it, Gunar Letzbor has compiled the series «ex Vienna» consisting of three programmes which shed light on various aspects of Austrian violin music. In the first part of the series, Anonymus, Gunar Letzbor has recorded violin works handed down to the present day in this Viennese manuscript, in which the names of the composers are not specified. The selected pieces reveal a broad expressive spectrum, ranging from profound sadness to lively buoyancy, also containing echoes of baroque dance music. What all the works share is their high technical standard: playing in high registers, unusual bowing, polyphonic passages, onomatopoeia and runs played at breakneck speed bear witness to the high standard of violin playing north of the Alps – whoever wrote these works must have been an outstanding violinist.

Impressed by the Handel works that he heard in London, Haydn felt the need to compose oratorios. First came Die Schöpfung (‘The Creation’), which met with resounding success; then Baron Gottfried van Swieten proposed to Haydn an arrangement of James Thomson’s poem ‘The Seasons’. Initially, Haydn was little attracted by the text, which deviates from the classic oratorio based on a religious text, but subsequently let himself be convinced. The result, for three soloists, chorus and orchestra, is a vast pictorial fresco of Nature that describes landscapes and the feelings that they arouse. For the first time, Philippe Herreweghe gives us his own vision of an oratorium by Haydn. This recording is also the first in a Haydn cycle with Philippe Herreweghe for Phi, of which the next project is... Die Schöpfung!

Total time : 94’28 2 CD PPD : 17,50€
Clavier-Übung III is considered Johann Sebastian Bach’s most important and most complete organ work, containing some of his pieces for the instrument that are the most complex musically and the most demanding technically. Formally, it takes its inspiration from the religious music of the masters of the stile antico. But, at the same time, Bach was an innovator and here incorporated modern Baroque musical forms, such as the chorale à la française and the gallant style. The aim of the collection was manifold: an ideal organ programme; a practical translation of Lutheran doctrine in musical terms for devotional use at church or in the home; a collection of organ music in all possible styles and idioms, old and modern; and a didactic work presenting examples of all possible forms of contrapuntal composition, going well beyond earlier treatises of musical theory. Léon Berben gives us his interpretation, a new and fresh view of this milestone in organ music, using the exceptional sound colours of an organ contemporary with Bach and largely preserved in its original state: the Christoph Treutmann organ in Grauhof (Germany).

Clara, Schumann’s wife and muse, for whom, and at whose side, he composed. These works, all written during the years in which the composer’s love for her – still no more than a young girl – began to bloom, are all filled with a passionate romanticism.
Concerned with the extreme heights of the human passions, Domenico Belli was willing to employ any means to achieve his goal. A contemporary of Monteverdi, this Florentine composer – with his mysterious and capricious personality – has left us music among the most startling of its era.
This recording presents some of the most beautiful passages of all baroque violin repertoire, combining Italian sensuality with French grace and refinement. Idolised as both performer and composer during his lifetime, Leclair was murdered in circumstances that remain mysterious.

To immerse oneself in a work like this is to begin a long journey from which one can only return profoundly transformed, and with the constant desire to set out once more. And to approach these pieces where only genius reigns, brings both humility and joy to the messenger. Hélène Schmitt
A man of contrasts and dramatic intensity, Beethoven is one of the most striking figures in music history, from the cusp between the classical and romantic periods. He wrote the works presented on this recording during the period when he was gradually becoming aware of growing deafness, something that would finally condemn him to solitude.

The pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha recorded them during one of his concerts in 2004, with the conductor Kazushi Ono and La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra.
These nocturnes are, to a large degree, responsible for Frédéric Chopin’s celebrity. They possess that grand melodic quality, taken to its extreme, that forms the basis of all the charm and seduction of his inspiration. The music of this composer – who died prematurely at the age of 39 – remains some of the most widely performed of the romantic repertoire today.

REW 520 WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART THE LAST SYMPHONIES Anima Eterna, Jos van Immerseel
REW 521 FRANCESCO GEMINIANI CONCERTI GROSSI & LA FOLLIA Ensemble 415, Chiara Banchini
The 40th symphony, perhaps the most beautiful and well-known of all, has an intensity that allows us to sense the depth of tragic sentiment that occupied Mozart at the time of its composition. The 41st and final symphony, known as the “Jupiter” – a titanic work in many regards – is an expertly assembled mix of traditional elements and innovations.
Geminiani made a transcription for string orchestra of Arcangelo Corelli’s celebrated sonatas for violin, op. 5. This exhilarating music is further glorified by the breadth imparted by an orchestral setting. The full, dense sonority of Ensemble 415 is ideally suited to its sublime intensity.

Well-known and admired during his lifetime, Brahms – with his broad and generous personality, now conservative, now innovative – was a major figure on the Viennese scene. The compositions for clarinet, dating from the very end of his life, were inspired by an encounter with the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. 1 CD – 3760195735190
REW 522 IGOR STRAVINSKY – BELA BARTOK L’HISTOIRE DU SOLDAT – CONTRASTES David Lefèvre (violin), Florent Héau (clarinet), Anne-Lise Gastaldi (piano) Some works written in the very particular context of global conflict, by two of the 20th century’s major composers. The first, by Stravinsky, is a truncated version, reduced for trio, of the famous Soldier’s Tale; the second, by Bartók, is his celebrated Contrasts, combining jazz and popular music. 1 CD – 3760195735220

Under the title ‘Occitan Nights’, a few troubadour songs have been collected here. Those poet-musicians celebrated the beauty of women, praised the courage of men and evoked the parting of lovers at daybreak. The CÉLADON Ensemble offers us a poetic, inspired vision of these lovely melodies (proposed with their complete texts), and the accompaniment, with four instruments (fiddle or rabab, lute, recorders and percussion), provides a particularly elegant sound environment sublimated by the perfect acoustics of the church of Notre-Dame de Centeilles

ZZT 341 Joseph Haydn : The Seven Last Words of Christ Alexei Lubimov, tangent piano Alexei Lubimov chooses the repertoires he plays and records with the freedom of the inspired musician that he is. This time, the intention came from his encountering the sonority of a particular piano, a Tangentenflügel, i.e., a tangent piano (the strings being struck by a metal piece called a ‘tangent’) that, in France, was sometimes called a ‘harmonious, heavenly harpsichord’. And it is the singular sonority of this instrument that made him want to record this keyboard transcription of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. Beyond this encounter, the disc attests to Alexei Lubimov’s incredible force of evocation and amazing sound imagination; he also demonstrates – as if that were necessary – how much the relation between a certain kind of writing and a particular instrument can contribute to the comprehension of a work.
ZZT 342 Ysaÿe - The Complete Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27 ; Sonata for Two Violins Tedi Papavrami This recording is the logical – and awaited – complement to the ‘Fugue for Solo Violin’ set released in the spring of 2013, on the occasion of the publication of Tedi Papavrami’s autobiography by Robert Laffont. It features the Sonatas for solo violin by Eugène Ysaÿe, an extraordinary vi- olinist who, in his time, played a role comparable to that of Niccolò Pa- ganini, just a century earlier. Ysaÿe dedicated each of these six sonatas to one of the very great violinists of his time (Szigeti, Thibaud, Enesco, Kreisler…). They constitute heights of virtuosity that few musicians can envis- age confronting and are, at the same time, musical works of the first rank. Tedi Papavrami has chosen to supplement this cycle with a work that Ysaÿe composed in 1915 and dedicated to his student, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium.

„Digital is perfect but analog is better“, says Hansi Enzensberger. The keyboard wizard and his colleagues Ludwig Kloeckner (bass) and Manfred Mildenberger (drums) locked themselves up in a studio for three months - with a Hammond organ, jazz bass and a Ludwig drum set. With Rhodes, Clavinet, Space Echo and Wurlitzer. In other words: with all the vintage treasures they could lay their hands on. The result: “Organ Explosion” – a rousing debut album that blasts the ‘70s sound aesthetic into the musical landscape of today. An album sparkling with the joy of playing and striking variation: in one moment Hansi Enzensperger draws silky clouds of sound from his keys, then he lets his Hammond organ bubble, scream, quiver. Mildenberger provides the reduced, precise rhythm machine, only to drum himself into true exhilaration after playing a couple of crazy breaks. Solid like a wall, Kloeckner backs up his partners in a boldly laid-back manner. Four beats later he drives them into ecstasy with a low frequency thunderstorm. The Leslies rotates and the disco ball flashes when the organ shoots through the roof from the dance floor.

Le Café Bleu is a tribute to the Belle Epoque of European jazz. Imagine how it must have been in Paris when the great artists like Django Reinhard, Quincy Jones or Francy Boland met in the “blue hours” at night after their concerts in some little street café to jam a bit. There the great talents often met ex-patriate artists and in these exhilarating sessions improvisation was influenced from all over the world. Chansons mixed with bebop, latin, folklore and swing - this is what you heard in the Café Bleu spots. Le Café Bleu transports the audience - be it young or old, rock audience or jazz fans - into their own sound-scape. The strong melodies provide a blue thread during the evening with the musicians nearly dancing over all borders and conventions.
