“Firma Melodiya” was founded in 1964 as a state-owned company for production, storage and distribution of sound recordings. Being the successor of All-Union Recording Studio “Melodiya” it was the only record company in the country till the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recording studios of “Melodiya” were situated in Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius and other cities. Each Union republic had a shop of “Melodiya”. “Melodiya” showed the sound history of the past century in a variety of genres (from light to classical music, from folklore to works of composers of all the former Union republics), gathered together masterpieces of art of prominent Soviet artists, ensembles, orchestras, musical theaters. Representing the domestic arts at home and abroad, on all continents, “Melodiya” became the guardian of the national musical heritage of many generations. Today “Melodiya” is: the national heritage of Russia, the most valuable archive which includes more than 230,000 sound recordings ; beautiful music, bringing together several generations ; variety of genres: classical music, folk, pop, rock, jazz ; masterpieces of the world musical art of famous bands and artists ; works of well-known composers and conductors ; “Alma Mater” of the leading professionals in the field of sound recording and musical art The company’s library of recordings is an important cultural asset. That’s why we pay special attention to its highquality restoration and releasing of archival records. However, “Melodiya” not only cherishes the unique musical heritage but also grows in the conditions of today’s music market. Archival records of “Melodiya” show the best pieces of the Russian performing arts of the XX century and the best composer’s works. Traditionally, “Melodiya” introduces the music of the forgotten classics of the Soviet period - Moses Weinberg, Herman Galynin, Boris Tchaikovsky and others. “Composer-performer” series is an authorized interpretation of symphonic and chamber compositions. “Melodiya” offers an anthology of outstanding soloists and groups: among them – “Russian play Russians” (conductor Kirill Kondrashin), “60 years of glory”) (State Borodin Quartet). “Silver Melody” series includes records with the voices of Anna German, Leonid Utiosov, Larisa Mondrus, Edyta Piecha.

The Arditti Quartet’s latest release is devoted to the Mexican-born composer Hilda Paredes. Now living in England, she does not, for all that, disown her roots. Born in Tehuacán, in Puebla State, she engages critical reflection, vis-à-vis the multiple Mexican, indigenous and folk cultures, that closely combines the imaginary and political, all in writing of remarkable precision and refinement. Convinced that the language spoken by a composer shapes his or her music, she likes to work the voice in all its expressive singularities, here that of countertenor Jake Arditti, Irvine Arditti’s son. There is no ‘Mexican-ness’ with Hilda Paredes, in the sense of that stereotyped colourful sensuality, but rather a close relation to the poetic speech of Mexico and the European avant-garde. Here, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Pascal Rophé, with whom the æon label has collaborated since 2003, give us a very fine William Blank monograph, the fruit of the orchestra’s sustained work with this essential representative of Swiss creation, alongside his elder Heinz Holliger and his contemporary Michael Jarrell. Born in 1957 in Montreux, William Blank, composer and conductor, is performed the world over. With him, there are no (or few) evanescent layers, aleatoric or improvised passages. Rather, there is a sort of pointillism with a human face, a maniacal love of small detail behind which emotion is flushed out by harsh, searing intensity or dense outpourings. The works on this programme are representative of the recent evolution in his work, especially the piano concerto, Reflecting Black, written in homage to the painter Pierre Soulages and magnificently served in this recording by pianist David Lively.

OLTREMONTANO - PSALLENTES - BECU, WIM The coronation of Charles II was the glorious celebration of the restoration of the monarchy following a coup d’état, civil war and an eleven-year government of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. The return of the monarch was sealed in early 1660 and the official coronation took place in London just a year later. It was a large-scale political spectacle and a festive patriotic statement. The sequence of the coronation festivities is well documented in texts and pictures, but contemporary statements concerning the music that was played are imprecise. The ensemble Oltremontano under the direction of Wim Becu, specialists in the wind music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, have evaluated this music and reconstructed the ceremony. They now present the various stations of the ceremonial act in sound: the arrival of the King in London, the triumphal procession to the cathedral, the solemn coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey, the ensuing royal banquet and the royal masques that followed. The result is a gripping sonic painting - supported by carefully incorporated background noise – that allows us to immerse ourselves in a magnificent event of the early baroque English monarchy.

Arthur Schoonderwoerd, one of today’s most sought-after interpreters on the fortepiano, presents the fourth part of his complete recording of Mozart’s piano concertos on the ACCENT label with this release of the two early Piano Concertos, KV 238 and KV 246. As they have already done on their previous issues, the aim of Schoonderwoerd and his ensemble Cristofori here is to liberate Mozart’s works from traditional nineteenth-century sound concepts. Each string part in the orchestra is played by just one performer; the result is a very slender, transparent sound that supports the solo instrument without ever covering it up. In the Concerto in B-flat major, KV 238, the fortepiano attains a range of five octaves for the first time in Mozart’s oeuvre and requires a correspondingly larger instrument. The Concerto in C major, KV 246 has numerous dynamic markings in the solo part and was thus probably intended for a «modern» fortepiano with these possibilities at its disposal. Although long dismissed as a mere dilettante concerto, this work is anything but technically undemanding when presented on an instrument of its time. Schoonderwoerd plays these concertos, both composed in Salzburg in 1777, on a replica of a fortepiano by Späth & Schmahl from the last third of the eighteenth century. The recording is rounded off by two alternative cadenzas to the Concerto, KV 238 and the concert arias «Si mostra la sorte» (KV 209) and «Con ossequio, con rispetto» (KV 210) , sung by the young Spanish tenor Francisco Fernández-Rueda.

Rosemary Standley, a Franco-American singer with a gentle, charismatic voice, tackles Baroque repertory with sobriety and elegance. She is accompanied by the ensemble of Bruno Helstroffer, a guitarist and lutenist at the crossroads between ‘early’ and ‘modern’ worlds, made up of musicians who specialise in early instruments (harpsichord, organ, viola da gamba, serpent). Love, I Obey is the evocative title of a poignant tribute to ballads that seem to warp time. Yes, the music comes from the past, but those who perform it are steeped in the present. One listens to Love, I Obey like a proposition and experiences it like a fantasy, with its everyday stories that give us an insight into History with a capital ‘H’. The in-depth research pursued like a musical detective by the group’s harpsichordist Elisabeth Geiger restores to life pieces forgotten for 400 years, such as the title song by William Lawes: Love, I Obey.

Presented in a stylish 4-CD box set, here is a comprehensive recording of one of the most enigmatic manuscripts in the history of European music, preserved in the museum at the Château de Chantilly, France. ‘Anything that can be sung, can be written in music notation,’ claimed an anonymous treatise on notation in the late fourteenth century. The harmonies thus ‘captured’ on parchment represent an apex in Western music, associated with the wealthiest courts in Christendom, called ‘decadent’ by some. Various elements of improvisation – avant-garde dissonance, astonishing rhythmic complexity, arching, lyrical melisma – meld into musical forms which test the boundaries of late Gothic sensibilities. Here are love songs for the End of the World: a time of deadly plague, devastating earthquakes, endless war, disintegrating religion, and the explosion of science and measurement. Enjoy a very special musical-audio play: Everything seems to be going wrong at «Circus Furioso». Bruno the Bear refuses to appear on stage, his assistant, Bella Stella, has disappeared, and finally, even the tiger escapes! Circus director Ricardo Grande has to improvise constantly. Luckily, his new assistant, clumsy August the Clown, always has a brilliant idea just at the right time. And in the end Circus Director Pimpelmoser is very happy again. The ‚Rundfunk-Kinderchor Berlin‘ (Children’s choir of Radio Berlin) and members of the ‚Bigband Deutsche Oper Berlin‘ (German Big Band of the German Opera Berlin) transport listeners to the furious world of the circus as musically portrayed by composer Peter Schindler. The colorful musical switches between music and the spoken text, which tells the exciting, amusing tale centered around Director Pimpelmoser and his merry troupe. Clear the ring for Circus Furioso!»

DDA25120 COUPERIN/ LYNCH - Beyond the River God - harpsichord music by Couperin and Lynch KARTTUNEN, ASSI François Couperin (“The Great”) is one of the central figures in French music of the baroque era, his expressive and picturesque music having a deep impact on many later composers. One of these is British composer Graham Lynch (b.1957) whose music has been commission and performed in over 30 countries and covers a wide range of styles. His harpsichord music is not derived from Couperin – he does not copy the style and ornaments of the old music – but is the nearest we have to an equivalent: highly expressive, well articulated and full of imagery. Finnish harpsichordist Assi Karttunen specialises in both baroque and contemporary music and this is her fourth published recording. Ever since his debut in 2005 with Berg’s «Wozzeck» (concertante) with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Daniel Harding has regularly attracted public attention with spectacular concerts. With the «Faust Scenes» by Robert Schumann – Daniel Harding’s first recording on the BRKLASSIK label – the conductor presents us with a work that until now had long been on the fringes of the repertoire, Schumann having primarily attracted attention as a composer of lieder, piano works and chamber music. The exceptional baritone Christian Gerhaher succeeds, perhaps more than any other, in credibly and forcefully conveying the sheer diversity of expression in Goethe’s literature here, and makes full use of his expertise as a profound lieder performer. He is joined by Christiane Karg as Gretchen, together with further internationally renowned soloists, the Chamber Choir of Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir, and the Bavarian Radio Choir.

Each volume in the ‘Portraits’ series is devoted to a composer who has now largely been forgotten; it presents a varied selection of his works. Théodore Dubois is the perfect example of the ‘official’ composer during the time of French Romanticism: he successively was a Prix de Rome recipient (1861), organist at the Madeleine (1877), an academician (1894), and director of the Conservatoire (1896) where he had been teaching since 1871. However, so much injustice as well as honour was heaped upon his music – accused of academic rigidity – that it is important to rehear it to be in a better position to judge its real interest value. A representative selection of works, typically previously unrecorded, is provided on this multifaceted book-CD: a biography, extracts from Dubois’ recollections, as well as articles discussing the composer’s style and personality.

JOHANN ROSENMULLER ENSEMBLE - PADUCH, ARNO Johann Pachelbel is well known as an organist and as the composer of the famous «Canon». While most of his organ works have been recorded by renowned organists, Pachelbel’s sacred vocal works are virtually unknown. Some may be familiar with his motets, but the great majority of his psalm concertos and cantatas for large vocal forces are almost entirely unknown. And yet these may be judged the most important works which Pachelbel wrote, for their influence can clearly be heard in the works of Handel and Bach. The highlight of these works is the setting of the 150th psalm «Lobet den Herrn in seinem Heiligtum» (Praise ye the Lord in his sanctuary). The psalm text mentions numerous instruments and is therefore ideal for setting to music. Unlike his colleagues, Johann Pachelbel scored his work for all those instruments mentioned in the text, resulting in a work for 5 vocalists, strings, oboes, bassoon, recorders, harp(!), 5 trumpets(!), kettle-drums and basso continuo. He even altered the psalm text slightly to justify the trumpets and kettle-drums, making this a perfect example of Baroque musical splendour featuring lavish sound painting and elevating the genre of «psalm concerto» to new heights.

GCD922804 MARENZIO, LUCA - Quinto libro di Madrigali a sei voci LA COMPAGNIA DEL MADRIGALE La Compagnia del Madrigale’s subtle, yet powerful advocacy of great Italian madrigals from around the turn of the seventeenth century continues with a further exploration of music by Luca Marenzio – his Quinto Libro di Madrigali a sei voci from 1591 –, a composer considered as one of the most complete of his time, capable of dominating the entire range of emotional expressions: joy, pain, sensuality, the evocation of Nature, and so on. Previous recordings on Glossa, including Carlo Gesualdo’s Sesto Libro and the recent award- winning Primo Libro by Marenzio, have demonstrated an uncommon response to the genre by this Italian ensemble: a fresh approach to each miniature it essays, combined with a wide-ranging awareness of the repertory; years of experience in other groups such as La Venexiana and Concerto Italiano have proved invaluable. Marenzio’s Quinto Libro was dedicated to an Italian nobleman, Virginio Orsini, Duke of Bracciano, on the occasion of his marriage to Flavia Peretti; a “wedding album” full of the latest musical and poetical techniques – the Canzon de’ baci, with words by Guarini, for example, is a marvel of its kind. However, below the surface polish of elegant and stylized Late Renaissance vocal music lurks a dramatic tale, conjured up by Marco Bizzarini in his booklet essay, of crimes of honour and passion, hired assassins and feuds between powerful aristocratic families... The vividness of La Compagnia del Madrigal’s rendition of Marenzio’s madrigals is captured by – and presented with – all the continuing hallmarks of Glossa’s production values.

This recording is a genuine pianistic event. It gathers together a long tradition for arrangement-making and originality in repertoire of which the solo versions are rarely heard in the concert hall. These feature a stunningly distinctive piano transcription of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, and original solo versions of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Ravel’s La Valse. Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua has been acclaimed for his natural sense of phrasing and color, but in this case it is the colors of an entire orchestra which are demanded by Sam Raphling’s seldom played and spectacularly virtuoso transcription of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring which is equal in this regard to Ravel’s own solo piano version of La Valse. Gershwin’s music adds a flavor of American swing via the Three Preludes, followed by the composer’s very pure, complete piano version of his famous Rhapsody in Blue.
GRCD4458 Music for a while - Canticles of Winter AUGESTAD, TORA - CARSTENSEN, STIAN - EICK, MATHIAS - TAXT, MARTIN HAUKSEN, PAL The band Music for a While, fronted by Norway»»s uncrowned queen of the cabaret, Tora Augestad, are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year by releasing the album «Canticles of Winter», an album they themselves describe as «a selection of low-key winter songs with a hint of Christmas». It is miles away from a traditional Christmas record, although some of the loveliest Christmas songs ever written can be heard here. Music for a While’s trademark is the group’s personal, organic and creative approach to the material, regardless of its origins. Whether the point of departure is Kurt Weill’s familiar cabaret melodies or songs and pieces from the classical repertoire, two elements consistently stand out: vocalist Tora Augestad’s vocal control and unique communication skills, and the band’s elegant, seamless and genrecrossing treatment of the material.

Today when Frank Peter Zimmermann says that Mozart has always been easy for him, he needs only call to mind his debut concert at the age of ten – when he played Mozart’s G major Concerto K. 216; or when, some 30 years ago, as a fresh 20-year-old, the same FPZ made his first recording of the five concertos for EMI; and then if one factors in that over the years that each of these Mozart works has passed through his hands nearly 300 times in concert, then one can begin to appreciate the intense physical and spiritual experience that Frank Peter Zimmermann brings to these new recordings. One will immediately hear on this CD the experience that a master can bring to these works, because no one else plays these works with the same incredible, almost balletic, weightless elegance and rich tone, reaching a degree of intimacy, without any obstacle between the performer and the listener, as does Frank Peter Zimmermann. Mozart’s every wish is perfectly fulfilled! The Chamber Orchestra of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian broadcasting company serves both masters admirably. Frank Peter Zimmermann‘s Mozart edition will be released on 3 CDs; the second CD will be released in February, 2016 and will include the Sinfonia concertante (with Antoine Tamestit), the Violin Concerto No. 2 D Major K. 211, the Rondo in B-flat Major KV 269 as well as the Haffner Serenade K. 250 in which the violin plays a big role. The third CD is planned for 2017 and will contain the Concertone for two violins, the Violin Concerto No. 5 and the Kassation K. 63.

Since the early 1990s, Antonio Vivaldi and Fabio Biondi have become inseparable musical values for many music lovers around the world. In his latest recording for Glossa, the latter offers further proof of the astonishing imaginative powers of Vivaldi as a composer of violin concertos, which are matched by Biondi’s own dynamic and cultured virtuosity as a violinist (and director). With these Farewell Concertos Biondi – leading Europa Galante – turns to works written by a Vivaldi very near the end of his life as he travelled to Vienna in a desperate search for creative opportunities. Where Biondi’s recent Il Diario di Chiara release saw a late Vivaldi surrounded by colleagues and successors at the Pietà in Venice, I concerti dell’addio sees him in a Vienna in mourning for its recentlydeceased emperor and more attuned to the now fashionable galante style than to that of the Red Priest, however brilliant and ebullient Vivaldi’s compositional spirit continued to be. The six concertos on this disc are all drawn from a collection sold in 1741 – very cheaply it seems – to the count Vinciguerra Collalto, and today kept in Brno, and bear witness to Vivaldi’s late style (as it headed inthe direction of Tartini and Locatelli). Biondi’s selection of concertos provides him full scope to portray the vivid and masterfully-conceived imagery, the compendium of violin techniques and the opportunities for improvisation implicit in Vivaldi’s maturity.

In the years since the acclaimed recordings made by the Hungarian pianist Zoltán Kocsis back in the 1980s and 90s, no single pianist has attempted to record a complete edition of Bartók’s works for solo piano! For a quarter of a century, no new comprehensive perspective on this multifaceted oeuvre has been cast, an important and varied, yet internally cohesive body of work that displays so many different aspects of Bartók’s creativity. This is exactly what the German pianist Andreas Bach has set out to achieve - «... to find the young Bartók in the late works as well as the late Bartók in the early works. And (...) create a recording that presents a Bartók different from those usually encountered and which are by contrast, ‘middle-of-the-road’». Emphasizing “not only the rhythmic and folkloric content, but also providing an opportunity to discover Bartók‘s harmonic thinking”, an aspect of the composer’s language that few fans had the opportunity to appreciate before.
98.047 TELEMANN, GEORG PHILIPP - Festive Cantatas HANNOVERSE HOFKAPELLE - COLLEGIUM VOCALE SIEGEN - STOTZEL, ULRICH MERTENS, KLAUS - VITZTHUM, FRANZ With 3600 works to his credit, Georg Philipp Telemann is rightly regarded as of one of the most prolific composers of all time. This superlative however has brought him less honor than one may have hoped, because with so many works came the suspicion that quality may have been sacrificed in the process, a view that prevailed especially throughout the 19th century. As a result, the objective study of Telemann and his protean work only began in earnest in the late 20th century, resulting in many discoveries and first performances that show the seriousness and depth of the composer’s genius. The present CD features a trio of cantatas from the so-called “Engel-Jahrgang” (lit. “Angel cycle” named for the image of an angel that appears on the cover of the printed scores) dating from 1748/49. In these works, Telemann has already begun to explore the Rococo style, which had just begun to take root and demonstrates his compositional skill and originality at every turn. Three festive cantatas ring out in glorious tones: “Der Herr lebet” for the first day of Easter, “Ehr und Dank sey Dir gesungen” for the Feast of St, Michael and “Der Geist giebt Zeugnis” for the Day of Pentecost. The Bach-Chor Siegen, the Hannoversche Hofkapelle, singers Miriam Feuersinger, Franz Vitzthum and Klaus Mertens and director Ulrich Stötzel are in their element with Telemann - having previously released several Telemann albums with hänssler CLASSIC.

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE - MORTON, JONATHAN • Under the directorship of Jonathan Morton, Scottish Ensemble adds the Tchaikovsky Serenade, regarded by the composer as one of his finest works, to its impressive Linn discography. • Imbued with the classical spirit of Mozart, but with Tchaikovsky’s style to the fore, the Serenade contains some strikingly effective scoring and an exhilarating Finale the ensemble relishes. • SE brings the same level of precision and finish you would expect from a string quartet; this is particularly evident in the elegiac third movement, one of Tchaikovsky’s most inspired musical moments. • This recording also marks the premiere of Jonathan Morton’s 2013 transcription of Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 2. • Drawn to the work’s large, epic scale and the richness of its soundworld, Morton was keen for the ensemble to tackle this masterpiece from the chamber repertoire.

• Following the success of performances and recordings of Weber’s Wind Concertos with SCO principals as soloists, the SCO Wind Soloists that feature on this album have since 2012 started to explore Harmoniemusik repertoire. • Inspired by the legacy of the great Mozartian conductors of the SCO including Sir Charles Mackerras, the Wind Soloists make a fine contribution to the SCO’s distinguished Mozart discography. • This new recording includes four of the five Tafelmusik sextets for pairs of clarinets, horns and bassoons, together with the Serenade in E flat major, the first of Mozart’s three great wind serenades. • The Serenade in E flat major has many unusual features. Its opening fanfare - a series of repeated chords on the tonic in E flat - immediately catches the ear. • The fact that Mozart avoids fatiguing the listener with a surfeit of the same sonorities, in music with a necessarily limited dynamic and instrumental range, bears eloquent testimony to his genius.

• ‘Brahms & Schumann: Lieder’ sees Dame Ann Murray, one of the great vocal artists of the past decades, return to the recording studio to perform a personal selection of Lieder. • ‘Brahms & Schumann: Lieder’, Ann’s first solo album in over a decade, will be her final Lieder recording and a fitting way to draw her long and distinguished recording career to a close. • Still a regular fixture on the opera circuit, Ann’s voice remains impressive. Following a Brahms recital at Wigmore Hall in 2014, The Times stated: ‘Her still-penetrating mezzo was the highlight of the evening. Murray really sings through Brahms’s cantabile lines while losing nothing in theatrical awareness.’ • It is difficult to imagine a singer who inspires greater affection and admiration than Ann Murray DBE. With Malcolm Martineau at the piano, this beautifully balanced programme sees Ann perform some of her favourite works by Schumann and Brahms. • The recording features Malcolm Martineau (piano) Benjamin Appl (baritone), John Mark Ainsley (tenor), Johnny Langridge (tenor & Ann’s son) and Hester Dickson (piano & Malcolm’s mother).

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of The Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar performed by Evgeny Svetlanov. The Dream of Gerontius (1900), often referred to as an oratorio, is Elgar’s largest composition. A deeply spiritual and religious content of the oratorio, plenty of dramatic and vivid episodes, a developed vocal and choral texture, and masterful grasp of orchestral colours made it one of the most popular works of British music along with Handel’s Messiah. The Dream of Gerontius was performed with great success at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1983 with the participation of well-known British soloists Felicity Palmer, Arthur Davies and Norman Bailey, the London Symphony Chorus conducted by Richard Hickox and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov. We present a recording of that performance.

The eighth disc of the Anthology is dedicated to the roots of Russian piano school and encompasses the first hundred years of its development in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Taneyev’s prelude and fugue in G sharp minor is a climax of the album – a grandiose polyphonic cycle, one of the peaks of Russian music of the pre-revolution period. The works of the Russian composers are performed by young pianists, graduates of the Moscow Conservatory and prize-winners of prestigious international competitions who are worthy representatives of a new generation of Russian music performing school.

MEW1575 JONGEN, JOSEPH - Pages Intimes
In exile in London during World War I, Joseph Jongen (Liège, 1873 – Sart-lez-Spa, 1953) composed there numerous works. This CD brings together some of his pieces for orchestra, whose masters are called Franck, Wagner, Debussy and Ravel. His symphonic works from the Great War period compel recognition as the last vestiges of a world on which the language of late romanticism had still left a reassuring mark.

Firma Melodiya presents concert recordings of Charles Munch with the USSR State Orchestra. Charles Munch was one of the best known representatives of romantic conducting school. He started his own conducting career in Paris where Munch directed some of famous orchestras of the French capital since the mid 1930’s. In 1962, after thirteen years with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA, the conductor returned to France and visited Moscow for the second time in May 1965. The album features recordings of fragments from Rameau’s opera Dardanus, Debussy’s La mer, the second suite from Roussel’s ballet Bacchus et Ariane, and Honegger’s Symphony No. 2, the tragic war spirit of which proved to be so close and understandable to the Moscow audience. The recordings were made at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1965.

NI6294 FRANCK/ DVORAK/ GRIEG - Violin Sonatas, Four Romantic Pieces STEINBERG DUO Recently described by The Sunday Telegraph as having both “warm musicality” and “virtuosity”, and by Gramophone magazine as “passionately committed advocates”, the Steinberg Duo has performed in Canada, Spain, Germany and throughout the UK. 2013 marked the release of their first commercial recording for the Nimbus Alliance label, their first live broadcast on BBC Radio 3, their first concerto appearance with the Orchestra of the Swan, as well as recitals at Blackheath Halls, Fairfield Halls, 1901 Arts Club and various music clubs around the U K. The 2013 CD release of Sawyers & Elgar Violin Sonatas has enthralled the critics: Bruce Reader described their playing as having “the listener teetering on the edge of melancholy and joy”, while John France, for MusicWeb International, described the disc as “a startling discovery… an exemplary performance”. The Swiss magazine, Music und Theater wrote, “The interpretations of the Steinberg Duo are simply phenomenal. So lucid, passionate and unsentimental, they make the works sparkle”.
NI6296 FAURE, GABRIEL - The Two Piano Quartets THE SCHUBERT ENSEMBLE Fauré seems at first glance to fit neatly into the history of French music, as a pupil of SaintSaëns and a teacher of Ravel. Yet he stands apart from the mainstream because of his unique musical language, and because rather than writing colourful orchestral pieces he preferred to work in the comparatively modest media of the song, solo piano and chamber music. With the exception of the late String Quartet, all of his chamber works combine the piano, Fauré’s own instrument as a performer, with strings. Among the earlier works, written in the late 1870s and mid-1880s, are the two Quartets for piano and string trio. This was a combination for which most of the models belonged to the German tradition, from Mozart to Schumann and Brahms – though there was a recent French precedent in the B flat major Quartet by Fauré’s teacher and friend Saint-Saëns, completed and first performed in 1875.

NI6300 MAHLER, GUSTAV - Symphony n.4 in G RCS CHAMBER ENSEMBLE - MANNING, PETER Mahler composed some of the most powerful and emotive symphonic music of his age; as well as the big melodies, his symphonies are also full of beautiful moments of chamber music. This has inspired, over the years, various arrangers to distil Mahler’s monumental symphonic structures down to the more intimate proportions of a small chamber ensemble. This Klaus Simon (2007) arrangement is one of the most popular, and highlights the intimacy of Mahler’s music whilst internalising the power of the climaxes. This ensemble of talented students originally came together for an epic project with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 2014. Spread over a four month period, the group performed side by side with the Orchestra on a three city tour to India conducted by James Macmillan with soloist Nicola Benedetti. In order to capture the particular frisson of this group before many graduated; we brought them together in June 2014 for this special recording project. This recording captures the joy in music making which suffuses our conservatoire sector in the UK and chronicles how our students – with all their energetic enthusiasm – get close to the essence of ‘Das himmlische Leben’ (The heavenly life) which is the song and the idea behind this entire symphony. In the summer of 2011 Alexander Schimpf was the first German to win one of the world’s most renowned piano competitions: the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Since then, especially on the North American continent, the doors to all concert halls have been open to him. But he also performs in Germany quite often – not only solo recitals but also with such colleagues as Reinhard Goebel, the Armida Quartet, Christian Tetzlaff, Nils Mönkemeyer and Julian Steckel.

Schubert has been described as the last ‘classical’ and as the first ‘romantic’ composer, but it is really impossible to pin a meaningful label on him. He was, and still is, a very special case, a lonely figure in musical history, a dreamer who brought into music a degree of intimacy, despair, hope and disappointment previously unknown. Schubert was a sincere, shy and vulnerable man (though did not lack confidence in himself as an artist), and his personality is clearly reflected in his music. Schubert found his voice early (the song ‘Erlking’ was written in 1815 when the composer was only eighteen) and produced an incredible mass of work. His productivity peaked in 1828, the last year of his life, with a staggering explosion of creativity unparalleled in musical history – the coda of Schubert’s life was humanly devastating and creatively triumphant. Schubert wrote more than six hundred songs and his experience of working with poetry was crucial to his art. He learned how to tell a story and create an atmosphere in the limited space of song, how to compress his material in the most direct and effective way. Schubert’s musical language and his perception of the world were poetic and many of his works could be seen as intimate diaries or private meditations. His music resonates with the belief of Novalis (a visionary, and one of the most influential personalities of German Romanticism) that poetry is the highest form of language.

ODE 1198-2 ENESCU, GEORGE - Symphonie Concertante, Symphony No. 1 TAMPERE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - MORK, TRULS - LINTU, HANNU • The final release of the George Enescu (1881–1955) symphony cycle includes two neglected masterpieces: the 1st Symphony filled with youthful energy and the poetic and lyric Symphonie concertante for Cello and Orchestra. The soloist of the Symphony concertante is the award-winning cellist Truls Mørk. • Enescu wrote both of the works at a relatively young age: the Symphonie concertante was written at the age of 20 and the 1st Symphony was premiered when the composer was 25 years of age. Even so, Enescu had already created himself an impressive career as a composer with several large-scale works. • The Ondine recordings with Hannu Lintu and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra have proved to be extremely successful. The first release of the Enescu cycle received Gramophone Awards Nomination 2013. Hannu Lintu and the orchestra also received GRAMMY nomination for their recording of Rautavaara’s Kaivos Opera.

• Third release on Ondine by the Austrian star violinist Benjamin Schmid contains fresh arrangements of well-known piano pieces by Shostakovich and Prokofiev for violin and piano. Also included is a suite transcribed from Kurt Weill’s iconic ‘The Threepenny Opera’. All the three original works by the composers were written during the 1910s and 1920s. • Known for his exceptionally wide repertoire and a great sense of musicality Benjamin Schmid is one of the most versatile violinists of today. Described as “one of the most valuable of today’s golden-age-violinists” (The New York Sun), Schmid has performed with orchestras such as Wiener Philharmoniker, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Gulbenkian Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He is also a soughtafter jazz violinist. In 2006 the Strad Magazine wrote: “Schmid mesmerises from his very first entry, shaping phrases with a skin-rippling sensitivity to send the spirits soaring. His golden tone, immaculate intonation, faultless technique and total identification with this magical score are truly things of wonder.

PC10324 PIANI/ CALDARA/ SCARLATTI/ VIVALDI - I musicisti dell’imperatore G.A.P. ENSEMBLE - MILANESI, RAFFAELLA An Italian violin virtuoso of the 18th century, Giovanni Antonio Piani, is the inspiration behind the group bearing his initials, the G.A.P. Ensemble founded in 2012. Its three members - Emilio Percan (violin), Oriol Aymat Fusté (violoncello) und Luca Quintavalle (harpsichord) – are united in their shared interest in the works of this composer who is almost unknown today. The Habsburgs were amongst the most important music patrons from the 15th century onwards, engaging the best musicians of the period at their courts. The programme of this recording presents composers who were connected to the Habsburgs and Emperor Charles VI in the most varied ways. For example, there are Giovanni Antonio Piani, the best-paid musician of the Imperial Court Orchestra, and Antonio Caldara, Charles VI’s favourite composer – both of whom lived and worked in Vienna. Music directors in the service of the Habsburgs in other locations were Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonio Vivaldi, in Naples and Mantua respectively.

Ormindo is the third melodrama to have been born of the collaboration between librettist Giovanni Faustini and composer Francesco Cavalli. The plot, following the established code of dramatic convention, tells the story of two pairs of lovers (Erisbe and Ormindo, Sicle and Amida) as they experience reversals of fortune, disguise and a fictive death, all of which culminates in the agnizione of Ormindo as Hariadeno’s long-lost son in an incomparable coup de theatre. «This vivid performance has plenty of dramatic conviction … This engaging performance by Les Paladins is an important part of a patchy discography.» (Gramophone) “I was delighted by Piau’s performance in the lengthy prologue ... she sails through the highly ornamented writing with magnificent aplomb. The small instrumental ensemble is fluid, flexible and effective in driving the action in the continuo-only sections ... and delightfully pointed in the short string sinfonias.” (International Record Review)

PTC5186475 Beethoven, Period. HAIMOVITZ, MATT - O’RILEY, CHRISTOPHER Having shared ideas and projects for some time, there was no doubt for PENTATONE to join forces with OXINGALE RECORDS. This is a union of two innovative and devoted recording companies with a long history of producing reputable records and collaborating with esteemed artists. We are pleased to have you join us in celebrating this milestone as it gives way to a tremendously intriguing and inquisitive series of co-productions for you, our customers and ourselves. The first title in the PENTATONE OXINGALE Series is BEETHOVEN, Period. This release features the complete sonatas and variations for fortepiano and violoncello, recorded on period instruments. In this collaboration, Matt Haimovitz plays his own Goffriller cello, crafted in Venice, Italy in 1710 outfitted with ox-gut strings also from Italy and an early 19th century rosewood tailpiece and drawn by a Dominique Peccatte bow of the same era, while Christopher O’Riley plays on an original Broadwood fortepiano made in 1823. Delivered in PENTATONE’s signature warm, dynamic and detailed sound, this recording gives an opportunity for a straight encounter with the power of the rich interaction between the two instruments. Both Haimovitz and O’Riley engage themselves with the music, playing with welcome harmony and delightful phrasing from beginning to end, producing a dramatic and lyrical effect.

PTC5186481 ANTHEIL/ PISTON/ COPLAND - Spirit of the American Range THE OREGON SYMPHONY - KALMAR, CARLOS The Spirit of the American Range celebrates the works of one of the musical giants of the 20th century, Aaron Copland, joined with the works of his colleague, Walter Piston — who was, according to Copland, “one of the most expert craftsmen American music can boast” — and the self-proclaimed bad boy of music, George Antheil. Featuring Copland’s Symphony No. 3, Antheil’s Jazz Symphony and Piston’s Suite from “The Incredible Flutist”, this release is undeniably a homage to the distinctive musical characterisation of American themes in a passionate, modern style. As Leonard Bernstein once stated, “Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3 has become an American monument, like the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial”. The Spirit of the American Range is Oregon Symphony’s third release on PENTATONE. Recorded under Carlos Kalmar’s guidance, they prove throughout the recording that they can easily stand alongside the world’s great orchestras. Oregon Symphony and Carlos Kalmar elevate the release into a testament of the marvellous creations of the new generation of American composers.
PTC5186485 SCHNITTKE, ALFRED - Third Symphony RUNDFUNK-SINFONIEORCHESTER BERLIN - JUROWSKI, VLADIMIR One hundred and eleven musicians celebrating a large-scale symphony. That sounds like Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, or Arnold Schoenberg. In fact, the composer of this symphony, Alfred Schnittke, had precisely these composers (and many others) in mind back in 1981. Whereas he initially mirrored certain styles from figures as Mahler, Mozart, Bach, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, he was soon also borrowing concepts from “trivial music”, folklore, jazz, tango, as well as many other styles. He himself described his compositional technique as “polystylistic”, which was more than just a technique, but an aesthetic programme: a serious effort to break through the vicious circle of the self satisfied and self sufficient avant garde music. Alfred Schnittke’s Symphony No. 3 testifies all this searching, this “in-betweenness”. The four movement work — an opening Moderato, followed by an Allegro, a long movement marked Allego pesante, with the briefer finale marked Adagio — was commissioned for the ceremonial opening of the new Gewandhaus in Leipzig. He used the prestigious commission from Leipzig as a moment to confront not only the multi layered historical past, but also the weakened current state of affairs while remaining highly respectful of the achievements of both the past and the present.

RIC354 Sulla Lira LE MIROIR DE MUSIQUE Le Miroir de Musique is an ensemble specialised in the music of the late middle ages and Renaissance, from the golden age of the troubadours to the humanist movements of the 16th century. The ensemble is based in Basel (CH) and brings together the most prolific of early music performers, many of whom are graduates of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The image of a «Mirror of Music» is borrowed from Jacques de Liège’s treatise (Speculum Musicae), and reflects our goal of painting a vivid picture of medieval and Renaissance music, in a spirit of fidelity to the original sources. This project was first conceived for the Festtage Alter Musik in Basel in 2013, at the suggestion of Peter Reidemeister. The programme was developed in close collaboration between the five musicians and the musicologist Martin Kirnbauer. Also available : RIC333 - The birth of the Violin
The works of Hjalmar Borgstrøm is going through somewhat of a renessainse, and is about to be re-discovered. Violinist Jonas Båtstrand has already recorded his magnificent violin concerto to the enjoyment of the critics, and now the complete chamber music for violin and piano is ready. Borgstøm had a remarkable gift as a melody maker, well established both from the opera ‘Thora from Rimol’ (PSC1230) and the violin concerto and symphonic poems (PSC1311) - and he certainly makes full use of it in his chamber music. Jonas Båtstrand and pianist Helge Kjekshus have worked their way into Borgstrøm’s universe, discovering both a major sonata and several smaller pieces that together comprise his entire catalogue of music for violin and piano. Rarely performed - but certainly worth your while. Romantic violin music from Norway Borgstrøms Violin Sonata in G major, op.19 premiered in Christiania on 28 November 1906, with the violinist Gustav Lange and Amalie Borgstrøm at the piano. Romanse in E major, op.12, was published by Kistner in Leipzig in 1900, both in an edition for orchestra and one for piano. This Romance is dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe, but whether or not he performed it, is uncertain. The three remaining violin pieces, Serenade, Elegie and Berceuse, are preserved in manuscript in the National Library in Oslo.

Recorded in January 2014 in the grand acoustical environment of St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, by Grammy Award-winning producer Blanton Alspaugh of Soundmirror, this recording once again testifies the stature of South Dakota Chorale as a first-rate ensemble that delivers no less than sublime choral performances. Sacred Songs of Life and Love features some of the most beautiful works in contemporary Scandinavian and Baltic choral music, including Arvo Pärt’s Sieben Magnificat Antiphonen, selections from Kunt Nystedt’s Prayers of Kierkegaard, Sven-David Sandström’s Four Songs of Love and Algirdas Martinaitis’ Alleluia. The Chorale’s Conductor and Artistic Director, Brian A. Schmidt perfectly illustrates the intention behind this recording in his personal notes: “We hope this this collection of Sacred Songs of Life and Love will take you through a full range of your human emotions. From the mysticism of Mary’s canticle and the solemn joy that bubbles throughout the “Bogoróditse Djévo”, to the emotion anticipation found in the Sieben Antiphonen, to the deep reverence of Kierkegaard’s prayers, to the poetic perfection and sensual harmonies of the Song of Songs, to the glimpse of heavenly peace found in “O salutaris hostia” and finally the ethereal promise of the “Nunc dimittis”.

European jazz legend Martial Solal is an imaginative and creative thinker for the piano, and one never straightjacketed by music genres. Voyage en Anatolie is a kind of survey of Jazz, with 13 brilliantly linked variations. The Jazz-Preludes and Études explore piquant harmonies through innovative pianistic figures, whilst the Exercice de concert offers a stunningly transcribed improvisation. Solal himself plays the first piano part in the Ballade for two pianos. Key Features: There are many recordings of Martial Solal’s music available but these are invariably those featuring him as a great Jazz improviser. This disc features a number of world premiere recordings of his music played by excellent pianist Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua. The only piece previously recorded is the Ballade for two pianos, recorded by its dedicatees Katia and Marielle Lábeque in a mixed Jazz-centred recital called ‘Love of Colors’ – including pieces by Miles Davis and John McLaughlin in 1991. The performance of Ballade in Naxos’ disc is played by Ferrand-N’Kaoua and Solal himself, a unique treat given his world-wide reputation.

The desire to come as close as possible to the sound aesthetic of composers at the time of the first performance of their works, along with the simple pleasure of the sound of period instruments, guide Jos van Immerseel in his approach. For this recording, offering a panorama of French music for clarinet and piano from the early 20th century, Jos van Immerseel has chosen a Bechstein piano of 1870, and Lisa Schklyaver, a Dolnet Lefevre & Pigis clarinet from 1930. The recording is doubly precious in that it proposes both the view of one of the finest performers of French music on a variety of remarkable works as well as, in a way, the sonority and poetry of an era.

After the success of the DVDs devoted to Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme and Cadmus & Hermione, Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique continue their exploration of repertoires of the 17th century. This piece, combining theatre and music, allowed Purcell to achieve his dramatic ideal. In fact, he wrote only a single opera in his short career – he died at the age of 36 –, but with it, he left us a gem of rare beauty and extreme concision. The work’s genius is also due in part to the quality of the libretto, skilfully put together by Nahum Tate. Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek, stage directors coming from the arts of the circus and the mime Marceau, had already collaborated with Le Poème Harmonique on the Carnaval Baroque. Here, they combine mime, dance and acrobatics with the music in a moving, magical production.

CHAPLIN - A Ballet by Mario Schröder • The small guy with his mustache, his bowler hat and his bamboo cane is world-famous - however, who is the man behind this figure? The ballet describes Chaplin’s life in constant connection with his creative work and shows that an artist, observing his environment both sensitively and wide awake, stands behind the funny Tramp • Leipziger Ballett | Gewandhausorchester |recorded live at the Leipzig Opera, October 2013 POPPEA//POPPEA in 3D - Choreographer Christian Spuck • For this production, Christian Spuck was inspired by Claudio Monteverdi’s last opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea • The story of the marriage of the Emperor Nero and Poppea Sabina still brings a chill to audiences today, portraying as it does the cruel lust for power and passion at the court of the Roman ruler • Performed by Gauthier Dance // Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, recorded at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, July 2013 THE GREAT MASS - A Ballet by Uwe Scholz • The ballet “The Great Mass” is one of the most impressive works of the important neoclassical choreographer Uwe Scholz - a requiem, a choreographic revelation and certainly his grand legacy to the Leipzig ballet - it absorbs the structure of the liturgy of Mozart’s Mass in C minor and adds other works by Mozart as well as passages of Gregorian chant • Leipzig Ballet | Gewandhausorchester | Recorded live at the Leipzig Opera, 28 June 2005
