#YELLOWISTHECOLOUR ALPHA COLLECTION II Essential Baroque Masterpieces After the success of the first fourteen reissues, which restored to the limelight some of the gems of the early music repertory in the catalogues of our labels, here are fourteen new titles to allow listeners to renew acquaintance with further treasures of the Renaissance and Baroque (and even a journey through time thanks to Raphaël Imbert’s album Bach Coltrane), performed by some of the leading interpreters of the genre; most of these discs won one or more awards on their first release. As with the first series, the artists have been asked to contribute to the booklets, in which, with a few years’ hindsight, they talk about their conception of the works and how they went about recording them. The photographers of the Magnum agency illustrate the covers of the series with their work; this time the common design element is the colour yellow.

DE MURICA, SANTIAGO - Cifras selectas de guitarra PRIVATE MUSICKE - PITZL, PIERRE
Total time : 57’44 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Hundreds of prints with guitar music were published in France and Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. As such, it is all the more surprising that only nine books remain from Spain, the instrument’s country of origin. Half the surviving solo pieces for guitar come from Santiago de Murcia (1673-1737). Murcia’s fourth book, Cifras selectas de guitarra, dated 1722, only reappeared a few years ago in Santiago de Chile. It contains a multitude of Spanish variations. “Our original intent was only to record pieces from the most recently discovered book, Cifras selectas. However, the more we delved into the matter, the more we grew curious as to the versions contained in the other books. We eventually wound up thinking about Sanz and his contemporaries and looked up his collection of similar dances. We failed to resist the temptation to ‘’smuggle” in some of his works to compare with Murcia’s. In the end, a representative sample of Santiago de Murcia’s works was formed. We have kept the title Cifras selectas, for the selection from a substantial collection became a selection from substantial life works.” (Pierre Pitzl)
ACC26406 HANDEL, GEORGE FRIDERIC - Susanna NDR CHOIR - GÖTTINGEN FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA - CUMMINGS, LAURENCE
Total time : 184’00 3 CD PPD : 29,00€
After the patriotic ‘victory oratorios’, the oratorio Susanna marks a turning point in Handel’s composition. This Old Testament narrative is a popular motif in the domain of art history. Many a portrayal exists of the steadfast Susanna being watched – unbeknown to her – by two lusting elders as she bathes. Likewise, the scene of the supposed adulteress appearing before the judges who sentence her to death inspired painters such as Rembrandt, Giorgione, Gentileschi and Corinth. In adopting this as his subject, Handel chose a heroine who is neither a queen nor a prophet. The piquant account from the Book of Daniel drew from him magnificent inventiveness in the music, which also includes passages in the lighter vein characteristic of the English ‘ballad opera’ popular at the time. Susanna’s virtue, however, is extolled in monumental choruses. The present live recording is a production of the 2016 International Handel Festival in Göttingen, highly praised by the critics at their performances in Göttingen, Berlin, and Wroclaw. With Laurence Cummings, the Festival’s Artistic Director, a renowned Händel specialist stands at the helm of the Göttingen Festival Orchestra, assisted by an excellent vocal cast and the NDR Choir.

Olivier Cavé has already made several acclaimed discs for Aeon (Clementi, Haydn, Bach, Scarlatti). This student of Nelson Goerner, Maria Tipo and Aldo Ciccolini invariably impresses listeners with the refinement of his playing. Today he presents a programme of three piano concertos with a conductor whose ventures into Mozart are always crowned with success: Rinaldo Alessandrini. They met at a concert in Toulouse and decided to record these masterpieces. Rinaldo Alessandrini hasnformed an orchestra for the occasion, which he has christened ‘Divertissement’,and together they will embark on a European tour focusing on this programme and symphonies by Mozart at the time of the CD’s release. This programme follows an interesting path from Mozart’s youth to his maturity, a path that runs through three concertos, from no.5, composed when he was seventeen, to no.25, written the same year as Le nozze di Figaro,by way of the joyful and and subtle concerto no.13, which he composed in 1783. All three are stylishly and nimbly performed here by the soloist and an orchestra containing a majority of Italian musicians.
ALPHA244 Il était une fois
Total time : 60’40 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Romanticism replaced the element of mythological fantasy in Baroque opera with fairytale fantasy. The fairytale is omnipresent on the French stage, whether in spoken theatre, ballet or opera. It is no coincidence that Cinderella and Bluebeard so appealed to nineteenth-century composers . . . This project, initiated by the Palazzetto Bru Zane, is constructed like a ‘universal’ fairytale inspired by Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, Hop-o’-My-Thumb and others, as set to music by French composers of the Romantic era. It alternates between famous composers (Offenbach, Massenet, Chausson . . . and Rossini, here sung in French) and others who are still little-known (Viardot, Silver, Serpette, De Rillé, Isouard). Conceived by Alexandre Dratwicki and transcribed by him for piano quartet and two singers, a soprano and a mezzo, this imaginary opera is splendidly performed by Jodie Devos and Caroline Meng – who, at one point in the story, having sung a queen, dons breeches to play a prince. For her part, the soprano, who ends up as the winsome princess of Massenet and Offenbach, must first endure the torments of uncertain love.

ALPHA247 La famille Forqueray TAYLOR, JUSTIN
Total time : 79’15 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Justin Taylor, the winner of the 2015 edition of the celebrated harpsichord competition of the Musica Antiqua Festival in Bruges (which has honoured some of the world’s finest players, including Scott Ross, Christophe Rousset, Pierre Hantaï, Benjamin Alard, and more recently Jean Rondeau), has recorded for Alpha Classics a programme of music by the Forqueray family: Antoine, Michel, Jean-Baptiste, Nicolas- Gilles . . . Those are just some of the first names of a great dynasty of French composers, gambists and organists. Antoine Forqueray, born in 1672, obtained the highly coveted position of Musicien de la Chambre du Roi. He subsequently had, shall we say, a complicated relationship with his son Jean-Baptiste, born in 1699 . . . Envious of the boy’s talent for the viol, Antoine had him imprisoned when he was just sixteen years old! The recital, as well as painting a musical portrait of this unique family, also offers a chance to reflect on the issue of transcription. In fact, the suites performed here on the harpsichord were originally written for viola da gamba. The passage from one instrument to another, from one soundworld to another, sheds new light on the music and allows us to grasp its full originality.
ALPHA248 BRAHMS, JOHANNES - String Quartets & Piano Quintet BELCEA QUARTET - FELLNER,TILL
Total time : 149’40 2 CD PPD : 17,50€
More than twelve years after its initial incursion into the music of Brahms, the Belcea Quartet now presents an eagerly awaited complete recording of his string quartets. A powerful style and a sense of musical architecture are the two qualities most often attributed to the Belcea, which is now one of the top international quartets. And those characteristics blossom to the full in Brahms. For the Piano Quintet, its members are joined by Till Fellner. This Austrian former student of Alfred Brendel is one of today’s most respected pianists, combining grace, rigour and musical intelligence. In September 2016 the Belcea Quartet will embark on a tour that will take it to the United States and most countries in Europe. To coincide with the release of this new Brahms set, Alpha Classics will also reissue thecomplete Beethoven quartets (8 CD set, ALPHA 262)

Serpent & Fire PROHASKA, ANNA - ANTONINI, GIOVANNI - IL GIARDINO ARMONICO
Total time : 70’10 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
The German soprano Anna Prohaska joins Alpha Classics for several recording projects. Her first recital brings together two superb African queens – Dido and Cleopatra – and follows them all over Europe during the first centuryof opera, from the 1640s to 1740. A firework display of arias, virtuosic and tragic by turns, written by the leading personalities of Baroque music (Cavalli, Handel, Purcell, Hasse) and composers still awaiting rediscovery such as Sartorio, Graupner and the Venetian Castrovillari. For this programme built like a tragedy around the queens of Egypt and Carthage, whom she interprets with the passion and fervour that have made her reputation, Anna Prohaska is accompanied by one of today’s finest Baroque ensembles. Il Giardino Armonico; under the inspired guidance of their director Giovanni Antonini (who is also a dazzling recorder soloist in some of the arias), they keep us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. A top star in Germany, Anna Prohaska also sings on the world’s leading operatic stages, from La Scala to Covent Garden by way of Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg.
ALPHA262 BEETHOVEN, LUDWIG VAN - The Complete String Quartets BELCEA QUARTET
Total time : 480’41 8 CD PPD : 25,00€
Alpha is reissuing the complete Beethoven quartets by the Belcea Quartet : ‘Beethoven’s music has been at the center of our life as a quartet from our very first rehearsal together back in 1994. However, it is more recently that we immersed ourselves totally in Beethoven in preparation for, and during the course of the immense project of performing and recording all of his string quartets in the season 2011/12. It is during this past year that Beethoven’s music became an allconsuming passion for each of us. These sixteen quartets written some two hundred years ago form one the most complete and powerful musical statements ever made. The completeness lies in their unprecedented intensity and in the astonishing development that can be traced between the early and the late works - a thirty-year long revolution which altered forever the way we experience music.

This album of ‘solos’ for various different instruments constitutes the composer’s ‘personal diary’ over some twenty-five years. Eric Montalbetti, who was artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France from 1996 to 2014, long kept his music a secret, composing for himself, as if he were keeping a diary. Yet he had been composing since the age of eleven, while also learning the piano and the organ. He was taught by Paul Méfano and Michaël Levinas, and attended masterclasses with George Benjamin and Magnus Lindberg. In 1990 he received prizes from the Sacem and the Menuhin Foundation for his Violin Sonata. He seeks in music a language capable of expressing our most varied emotions: vital energy, interrogation, anxiety, mourning, rage, hope, prayer, love, gratitude. Trois études après Kandinsky for piano, Esprit tendre for oboe (a tribute to Helen and Elliott Carter), the Sonata for solo violin in four movements, a Suite for cello, five Formants for solo clarinet, and La Prière de l’Ange gardien for solo horn make up this programme, which is performed by some of the finest soloists on the current French scene.
IL GIARDINO ARMONICO - ANTONINI, GIOVANNI - ASPROMONTE, FRANCESCA Looking ahead to the 300th anniversary of the birth of Haydn in 2032, the Joseph Haydn Foundation of Basel has joined forces with the Alpha Classics label to record all of the composer’s 107 symphonies. This ambitious project is placed under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, who now presents the third volume, after two previous issues that attracted great attention and received numerous awards, including the Echo Klassik Prize 2015 for the ‘best orchestral recording’ of the year. Since he sees the music of Haydn as ‘a kaleidoscope of human emotions’, Giovanni Antonini has decided to approach the symphonies not chronologically, but thematically; the theme here is Haydn the philosopher. The Italian conductor has chosen in each of the programmes to make connections between the symphonies and other works. For this volume, he calls on the magnificent soprano Francesca Aspromonte to perform a number of arias including the famous ‘Solo e pensoso’.

Total time : 126’30 2 CD PPD : 17,50€
Happy anniversary, Ensemble Aurora! In September 2016 the Italian Ensemble Aurora celebrates its 30th anniversary: the very first concert of the group, founded and lead by the violinist Enrico Gatti, took place in Bologna at the beginning of September 1986, then the ensemble went to Fusignano (Ravenna), Arcangelo Corelli’s birthplace, where an international symposium on the composer was being held. Since the very beginning, besides exploring the Italian 17th- and 18th-century repertoire in its entirety, Gatti has been particularly attracted by Arcangelo Corelli’s music, for its perfect elegance and nobility, and, in fact, it was on Corelli’s trio sonatas that the ensemble based its studies in order to obtain a perfect balance between rigorous preparation and interpretative fancy. Enrico Gatti has dedicated a large part of his discography to Corelli’s works: all his recordings (Opp.III, IV, V, VI) have been recognized with a Diapason d’Or, and Op.III won the 1998 Diapason d’Or of the Year. Gatti’s recording of Corelli’s Sonatas Op. V (Diapason d’Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Choice of Amadeus) represents a milestone and a model for many performers and passionate listeners, and for this reason Arcana is re-releasing it for this particularly special occasion.

A398 SCARLATTI, ALESSANDRO - Missa defuntorum / Magnificat / Miserere / Salve Regina ODHECATON - DA COL, PAOLO
Total time : 76’37 1 CD PPD : 12,95
This recording is a discovery of Alessandro Scarlatti’s heretofore unknown sacred music, where Renaissance tradition meets Baroque sensibility for a unique and compelling recording. At the core of Odhecaton’s latest offering is the Missa defunctorum for four voices and basso continuo. It is in this- magnificent score – recorded for the first time using the critical edition of Luca Della Libera – that primarily contrapuntal writing gives way to Scarlatti’s stylistic choices of great expressivity and rhetorical force, such as in the case of the astonishing Lacrimosa. The Miserere is also recorded for the first time. Written for nine voices for the Sistine Chapel, the score follows Allegri’s model only outwardly; Scarlatti, in fact, moves steadily away from it through his harmonic originality, formal richness, and expressivity. The Magnificat displays a unique synthesis of the Palestrinian model and the expressive language of the eighteenth century. In this score, Scarlatti exploits the great wealth and variety of the Marian text, particularly in the relationship between words and the emotional and descriptive spheres.
C5275 Max Reger: Orchestral Works DEUTSCHE STAATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ BÜHL, GREGOR It’s not generally known that Max Reger, while gradually adding to his own catalogue, turned to arranging works by other composers as a form of relaxation between producing his own compositions. Unlike Reger’s original works for voice and orchestra, which largely reflect the tradition of the French orchestral song, his arrangements were usually made with staging considerations in mind.

”Along with many other harpsichordists and pianists, I believe that the Goldberg Variations ranks among the most significant works ever written for keyboard. Although I first heard a recording of the work 25 years ago, I have come to realise that, over the years, many aspects of my playing and interpretation have remained constant. And yet there has been a process of maturation, which I now want to document, simply because the variations are such an integral part of my life. Coupling the Goldberg Variations with La Capricciosa by Dietrich Buxtehude is something I have wanted to do for many years.“ Christine Schornsheim

Total time : 58’26 1 CD PPD :11,50
This album presents the world premiere recording of a unique new set of pieces by Danish composer Pelle-Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (1932-2016), written and dedicated to his GRAMMY®-winning playmates in the Kronos Quartet and Theatre of Voices with conductor Paul Hillier. Using a text from Henry VIII’s Songbook and taking musical inspiration from the old ‘ground’ technique and from a certain famous Baroque canon, Green Ground offers a kaleidoscopic trip through the enchanting world of PGH, offering independent layers of playful sounds for strings and voices and then merging them together to the accompaniment of wooden percussion instruments
DDA25141 HENDERSON, PHILIP - From the old world to the new world THE GREEN AND PLEASANT BAND
Total time : 78’15 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
The name of English composer Philip Henderson is most closely associated with the stage and the West End (he was composer of the popular musical The Far Pavilions) but his works have been played globally, most recently on a tour of China. This concept album tells the story of a young lad (actually the composer’s father) leaving rural England in the 1930s, seeking a menial job on a ship and arriving to a new world of colour and glitz in New York. Both the musical style changes (from lyrical but minimalist string pieces to Broadway-style numbers) and also the recording technique, moving from ‘natural’ to ‘studio’ to emphasize the twodifferentandyetco-relatedworlds. The composer intends to produce this music as a ballet, as it is strongly suggestive of modern dance and stage musicals. Vocalists Paul Baker (London) and Pia Sukanya (Mumbai, India) are leading figures in their respective countries’ theatre and movie worlds.

This recording features Annick Massis as Manon and the tenor Alessandro Liberatore in his debut as De Grieux. Both artists are distinguished interpreters of the leading roles. Manon is Massenet’s most popular and enduring opera. Following its première, it quickly conquered the world’s stages and has continued to maintain its important place in the repertory ever since. It represents the quintessential charm and vitality of the music and culture of the Parisian Belle Époque. The opera became a mainstay of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, reaching its 1,000th performance there in 1919.
CDS7762 BACH, CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL - Keyboard Music
Total time : 66’44 1 CD PPD : 11,50€
The pieces on this recording are performed on a rather unusual instrument, but one which enjoyed some popularity during the second half of the 18th century: the tangent piano (Tangentenflügel). Its strings are struck by wooden slips without any soft coverings. In place of the rotating motion of a conventional piano’s hammers, the tangent piano has strikers that move perpendicularly to the strings, like harpsichord jacks. Franz Jakob Spath (1714-1786) and Christoph Friedrich Schmahl (1739-1814) were the most famous makers of the Tangentenflügel. The instrument featured on this recording belongs to a Swiss private collector and has survived virtually intact. The six books of Sonatas, Fantasias and Rondos, which bear the subtitle ‘Für Kenner und Liebhaber’ (for masters and amateurs), were published between 1779 and 1787. These innovative pieces stand among Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s greatest accomplishments. Though sometimes quite demanding for the listener, the music always has an immediate, expressive and emotional impact, which makes the six books of Für Kenner und Liebhaber by the “Hamburger Bach” one of the most refined collections of keyboard pieces ever composed.

Total time : 112’63 1 BOOK + 2 CD PPD : 25,50€
After Fiesque (1868) and Le Roi d’Ys (1888), Édouard Lalo embarked on the composition of what he intended as his masterpiece: a historical and moral opera set against the background of a peasants’ revolt. But he died unexpectedly, having completed only the first act. His family entrusted Arthur Coquard – a fervent Wagnerian like Lalo – with the task of finishing the job, which he did with incontestable talent. The work multiplies references to Romantic Grand Opera, in particular with its spectacular set designs. With its concise structure and its vocal writing blending Verdian heroism and Wagnerian lyricism, La Jacquerie is a succinct, effective opera, devoid of affectation. The work had a successful premiere at Monte Carlo on 9 March 1895 and was revived in Lyon and at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in December of the same year.
GCD921123 MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS - The Oboe Concerto & other works for oboe ORCHESTRA OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY - DE BRUINE, FRANK
Total time : 69’38 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Following on after the death of Frans Brüggen in August 2014, the decision was taken by the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century to continue touring the world, and inviting various guest conductors who have known and worked with the ensemble over many years, such as Daniel Reuss, Jonathan Darlington and Andrea Marcon, and indeed Kenneth Montgomery, who directs the orchestral pieces on this brand new recording for Glossa. Additionally, the orchestra often performs without conductor – and most of its members have been involved musically with each other for decades. The first recorded result of the new post-Brüggen era is this Mozart CD with a programme centred on the oboe, which has been devised by the long- standing orchestra member, Frank de Bruine. Mozart has been central to the Orchestra’s music- making and the composer made many friends with wind players – including oboists – and wrote abundantly for them. De Bruine is himself the soloist in the C major Oboe Concerto (the original version of the Flute Concerto, KV 314) and is present in two chamber pieces, the F major Oboe Quartet, KV 370 and the D major Divertimento, KV 251 as well as the concert aria, “Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio!”, KV 418 which involves soprano Dutch Lenneke Ruiten. This new chapter in the recorded history of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century is provided with an essay by scholar Clemens Romijn.

LA RITIRATA - JOSETXU OBREGÓN
Total time : 70’15 1 CD PPD :12,95€
In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, La Ritirata and Josetxu Obregón have created a programme for Glossa sallying forth on the back of music composed by Antonio Caldara and inspired by El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha.Antonio Caldara was neither the first nor the last composer to have his compositional ingenuity sparked off by Cervantes’ timeless masterpiece. He may well have been propelled forwards by his own experiencing the Spanish soundscape within a century of the publication of the two parts of the Don Quijote: Barcelona was a working “port of call” for Caldara after Mantua and Rome and before Vienna. For the Viennese court he wrote a pair of operas (with librettos by GC Pasquini): Don Chisciotte in Corte della Duchessa and Sancio Panza Governatore dell’isola Barattaria, and from these works Obregón – like Caldara also a cellist – has put together a selection of arias. Soloists María Espada, Emiliano González Toro and João Fernandes invest their abundant collective artistry in bringing to life a rapid series of Cervantine characters, not least the Spanish knight and his squire. Interspersed between these vocal contributions are a series of instrumental ballets composed for these operas by Nicola Matteis, who also worked at the Viennese court. In the booklet essay Begoña Lolo and Adela Presas set the scene for Caldara’s contribution to the musical legacy of Don Quixote.
GCD923406 TELEMANN, GEORG PHILIPP - 12 Fantasias for solo violin (Hamburg 1735) BIONDI, FABIO
Total time : 62’30 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Alongside his success directing Europa Galante, Fabio Biondi has not let up on demonstrating his talents as a violinist yet his sixth CD for Glossa – 12 Fantasias by Georg Philipp Telemann – is the first to present him completely “a solo”. Telemann’s Fantasias for Solo Violin are reflections both of his full maturity as a composer and of being highlyproficient violinist himself, with the exceptionally prolific and enormously busy composer publishing sets of fantasias for solo instruments – flute, viola da gamba as well as violin – without basso continuo in Hamburg in the 1730s. The dozen fantasias recorded here are written for an unaccompanied instrument and manage to embrace both the longestablished style for polyphony in German violin music – with fugues and multi-part writing for the violin – and more modern trends – galanterien and Italian sonata and concerto influences. Fabio Biondi plays a Ferdinando Gagliano violin from the eighteenth century and was recorded in June 2015 by Fabio Framba in the Brescian Chiesa di Sant’Eufemia in Corte Franca in Italy. If Telemann’s violin music has been greatly overlooked on record it can have no better champion than Fabio Biondi and the Glossa CD also benefits from an essay from the Director of the Bach-Archiv in Leipzig, Peter Wollny.

“My encounter with the music of Murad Kazhlaev and subsequently the composer himself have been life changing experience for me. My love of his music and our friendship continues to deepen, and in my opinion, he is one of the greatest surviving composers of the Soviet tradition not yet widely known in the West. Born in 1931 in Baku and growing up in his native land Dagestan, Russia, Kazhlaev has been considered as one of the leading composers of Caucasus. His sincere, generous and humane soul are the essence of all his music whether it is a serious classical work or light film music. I chose these repertoires of varied styles which demonstrate his passion for native Caucasus culture, jazz, popular and film music. He is exceptional in that he can connect with any kind of audience of any age. I hope very much that the music on this CD will enlighten listeners’ souls as they did for me.” – Chisato Kusunoki

GP707 GEORGE ENESCU - Complete Works For Solo Piano 3 JOSU DE SOLAUN This third and final volume dedicated to Enescu’s piano works shows the unique blend of influences he acquired during his teenage years in Vienna and Paris. These start with his Brahms-like treatment of the piano as a symphonic instrument in the Scherzo and Ballade to the infusion of French late-Romanticism and Fauré in the Impromptus. The crowning achievement of these early compositions is the Suite dans le style ancien, Enescu’s first public solo piano opus, a stylised evocation of Bach seen through the prism of turn-of the-century Paris.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra celebrates the life and works of its much-loved Composer Laureate Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Maxwell Davies was closely associated with the SCO since the 1980s, when he became its composer/ conductor-in-residence; this is the last recording preceding his passing in March 2016. Maxwell Davies was one of the UK’s foremost composers; he made a significant contribution to music with his prolific and wide-ranging output, which was celebrated with a 2014 BBC Prom devoted entirely to his works, and conducted by Ben Gernon. An Orkney Wedding brilliantly portrays the beauty of the rising sun after a boozy celebration, using bagpipes to close in a blaze of light. Maxwell Davies composed the concert overture Ebb Of Winter in 2014 to mark the SCO’s 40th birthday. The hauntingly beautiful piecedepicts a wintery landscape with the optimism of the coming spring. The two pieces for solo guitar each demonstrate the emotionalfrankness of Maxwell Davies’s music, from the menacing flashes ofHill Runes to the unaffected tenderness of Farewell To Stromness;young guitarist Sean Shibe is the soloist.

Having established a fine reputation as an instrumental ensemble with critically acclaimed recordings of music by Zelenka and Fasch, this is the first foray into vocal music for Ensemble Marsyas. Due to the original overture not surviving Ensemble Marsyas has substituted Handel’s overture Il pastor fido; its pastoral nature is perfectly juxtaposed with the more dramatic cantata which follows. Il pastor fido was described by 18th-century music historian Charles Burney as ‘one of the most masterly and pleasing of the kind’. Apollo e Dafne is one of Handel’s most ambitious cantatas giving an early indication of what was to be a brilliant operatic career in the next thirty years of his life. Joining Ensemble Marsyas for Apollo e Dafne are soprano Mhairi Lawson (Paul McCreesh’s Gabrieli Consort) and bass Callum Thorpe (William Christie’s Les Jardins de Voix). Fans of Ensemble Marsyas’ instrumental performances will also be pleased to see the inclusion of two recital pieces for wind band, which gives the core members a chance to shine.

SOLOISTS, CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA OF THE BOLSHOI THEATRE - VEDERNIKOV, ALEXANDER
Total time : 131’27 2 CD PPD : 15,50 €
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the premiere of the opera (2005, staged by Eimuntas Nekrošius) became one of the most significant events of Russian musical culture of the 21st century. It was the first time when the Bolshoi Theatre commissioned a new opera from a contemporary composer. The “experiment,” a result of collaboration between Leonid Desyatnikov and writer Vladimir Sorokin, left a bright footmark in the history of the country’s major music theatre. The composer has showed his worth in very different academic genres – opera, ballet, symphony, concerto and chamber music, and yet his style can hardly be defined and arbitrarily forced into a Procrustean bed of stylistic designations unless the composer doesn’t mind the term “post-modernism.” The renowned music critic Alexander Matusevich named the opera a “musical and stage realization of the ideas of modern culture.” It’s a story of five great composers (Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky) cloned by German scientist Rosenthal who fled to the USSR. The composers find themselves amidst the social landscape of post-Soviet Russia. It’s a story that gives birth to a peculiar play upon styles without any direct citations and adoptions, but with numerous musical, dramatic and other analogies that are unmistakably recognizable by the listener and create a fanciful mosaic of senses with a pseudoironic implication.

Total time : 42’41 1 CD PPD : 10,00€
Along with a great number of very popular works, the Russian genius’s musical legacy still has some “blank spots”. This uncommon “children” vocal cycle, most part of which was written to the poems of Alexei Pleshcheyev (Ivan Surikov’s The Swallow and Konstantin Aksakov’s Child’s Song are the rest of the poems used), is one of them. Some of the songs from the cycle are very well known, but performances or even recordings of all the sixteen songs at once have been singular. The composer approached the “children’s songs”, as he called the cycle, with extraordinary ardour and affection. The author of the Children’s Album managed to capture a child’s emotional world as he saw his ideal of unachievable happiness in its naïve purity. The featured recording made in 2015, the year of Tchaikovsky’s 125th anniversary, was a fruit of collaboration between Alexei Goribol, an outstanding contemporary musician and Honoured Artist of Russia, and the Boys’ Choir of the St. Petersburg Glinka Choral College. A pianist, concertmaster and organizer of numerous music festivals and solo projects, Alexei Goribol treats Tchaikovsky’s music with profound reverence. The Glinka Choral College is one of the oldest music educational establishments of Russia. The Sixteen Songs for Children interpreted by Alexei Goribol and the Boys’ Choir will be a wonderful present to the lovers of Tchaikovsky’s music and choral art.

Saint-Saëns’ favourite pupil, Gabriel Fauré, wrote in his obituary of his teacher of the ‘serene regions’ his music often inhabited, ‘where violence and paroxysms are unknown, where gravity, wit, charm and smiling tenderness rule side by side.’ In this he was echoing his teacher’s own response to the world around him: ‘Are smiles and graces to be ignored by all?... Happiness is disapproved of in the music of our time... Long live sadness! Long live boredom!’ To which I respond, ‘Long live keys, tunes, clarity and playfulness! Long live the music o f Camille le Grand!’
The present recording is the first of two volumes of original compositions and arrangements for piano duo and duet by Camille Saint-Saëns. it contains music written especially for me; the composers have paid me the great compliment of writing with my playing in mind, in some cases collaborating closely with me, in others simply prese nting me with a finished work, and in all cases creating a distinctive, English piece which makes a worthwhile addition to the repertoire for solo clarinet with orchestra. These four composers have all also dared to write melodically whilst still managing to find new things to say. Does it take courage to write melodically? Well, yes, when you live in an age where art has to be forever stretching boundaries to be taken seriously. However English Fantasy contains music which I hope will entertain and move a contemporary audience whilst unapologetically rooting itself in the traditions of the past.

Victoria and Her Hussar is a rare pearl of the glamorous revue-operetta that is not often presented. Even in Mörbisch, this piece could only be heard twice: in 1960 and most recently in 1973, over forty years ago with Johannes Heesters, amongst others. This does no harm to the popularity of the melodies, however: “Meine Mama war aus Yokohama”, “Mausi, süß warst du heute Nacht”, “Reich mir zum Abschied noch einmal die Hände” and “Pardon, Madame” are just a few of the evergreens that invite listeners to sing along.

Max Reger has remained a controversial composer, in a way perhaps comparable to Wagner, Hindemith and Shostakovich. Even today, the presence of his oeuvre is by no means a matter of course in concert life or on recordings; there are still numerous musicians, including serious ones, who reject his work, at times with good reason. And indeed, even a trained, experienced listener may find it difficult to grasp, let alone comprehend a large composition by Reger at first hearing. Nor is everyone aware that Reger composed four sonatas for violoncello and piano. The present recording does a great deal to compensate for this gap in knowledge.

The biographical point of departure for the Alpine Symphony was a hiking excursion in the Heimgarten of the Bavarian foothills of the Alps undertaken by the still youthful composer in 1879; when he took the wrong path, he was surprised by an unexpected storm front. The result was a magnificent symphonic poem that Strauss himself intended to call “Antichrist”. There is an astonishing bon mot attributed to the composer that seems to intentionally veil the history of this work’s composition: “I once wanted to compose like a cow gives milk”.

Today, 100 years after Reger’s death, his music-historical ranking is undisputed at least in the German-speaking world; however, his public presence is by no means as great as his amazingly rich oeuvre, comprising all genres except opera, would lead one to expect. Max Reger was granted hardly more than 20 productive years. He was no less intensively involved in the obsessive distribution of his works as his own agent and interpreter – this personal union, too, was unique to him around the turn of the twentieth century. Following the conclusion of the composer’s complete organ works with Bernhard Buttmann, OehmsClassics now proudly presents yet another complete edition – this time Max Reger’s works for the clarinet.

Jón Nordal (b. 1926) celebrated his 90th birthday in March 2016. Nordal is an important representative of contemporary Nordic music but the Icelandic composer has remained as a relatively unknown figure outside of his native country. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra under one of Sweden’s leading young conductors Johannes Gustavsson offer a unique glimpse into the creative world of this neglected composer with this release that contain five of his major orchestral works. Nordal studied in Europe extensively after the war in the late 1940s and 1950s, and since 1957 participated also in summer courses in Darmstadt. This had a major impact in Nordal’s creative work. There he came personally in contact with the leading European composers and in touch with the latest trends in contemporary music. In time he created a distinguishable personal style based on a perfect compositional technique. This recording includes a set of three orchestral pieces written in 1973–75 (Leiðsla; Epitafion; Langnætti) in the height of his creative powers, as well as an earlier orchestral work from 1966 (Adagio) and one of his masterpieces, Choralis, from 1982. This recording is the Ondine debut for conductor Johannes Gustavsson and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

With these powerful works Brahms brought the genre of violin sonatas into a new dimension. Included is also Scherzo movement from the F. A. E. Pianist and arranger Anton Batagov is one of the most influential Russian musicians of our time. As a performer Batagov introduced the music of John Cage, Morton Feldman, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass to Russian audiences. On this his debut recording with Glass’s record label Orange Mountain Music, Batagov offers a recital of Glass’s music which holds a personal importance for him, music which has never been heard on solo piano. Three of the four tracks offered on Batagov’s program are from Glass’s epic opera Einstein on the Beach - Trial, Night Train, and Knee Play 5. These pieces capture the sound of a particularly expansive moment in Glass’s career as he transitioned from hard-core Minimalism to a more expressive medium. That artistic pivot is captured in Batagov’s mystical reading of Prophecies from Koyaanisqatsi. In 2009, after a hiatus of 12 years from live performance Batagov returned to the stage presenting a series of unique solo programs including this program which was recorded in Moscow in November 2015.

When such an internationally celebrated singer as Pavol Breslik, an artist progressively adding to his repertoire, nevertheless keeps returning to Mozart, he is warmly praised by the critics and more than that, he has no qualms about his decision: “When I go back to Mozart after excursions into other repertoire – like Lensky or bel canto –and feel at home with Tamino, I know I have done the right thing.” Breslik now treats Tamino almost as his showpiece among Mozart roles; he sang it at an early age in his home city of Bratislava, he has been singing it at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden ever since his ensemble years there, he made his 2006 debut with it at the Bavarian Staatsoper, and only lately he embodied the part in the Baden-Baden production under Simon Rattle. As the role contains just one real aria, it is followed by the enchantment scene with the magic flute and a scene with the reciter, here played by the venerable José van Dam. From our singer’s impressively large repertoire of concert arias comes one of his favourites, “Misero! O sogno – Aura che intorno spiri”, sung in operatic manner that with its dramatic recitative and elegiac lamentation movingly conveys the sorrow of farewell.

Duets for violin and cello are what might be called the lowest common denominator of sophisticated solo literature and chamber music. Much as each member of the present duo intensively cultivates the chamber music repertoire, they are both first and foremost soloists – and are bound to remain so in the extraordinary technical and musical challenges of this intermediate category. After the premiere of the Ravel sonata, a contemporary listener wittily pleaded for the publication of a reduced version for orchestra. It is appropriate that the original works to be heard in this programme – and they are some of the most important works for this repertoire – were written surprisingly late, some of them a decade or more after the dawn of the Modern era. both artists wish this CD release to represent a record of their work together as a duo over the past ten years and more, as the two Munich musicians explain in an extended conversation with Meret Forster printed in the accompanying booklet. It is already the case that performances of the Brahms Double Concerto by our pair of soloists now almost inevitably lead the audience to expect the immortal Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia of 1894 – a demand which is gladly met.

Vivaldi per Pisendel PERCAN, EMILIO - G.A.P. ENSEMBLE
Total time : 70’19 1 CD PPD : 12,95
This CD presents violin sonatas dedicated by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) to German violinist and composer Johann Georg Pisendel. The manuscripts of the works come from the library of the Dresden Court Orchestra to which Pisendel himself made regular contributions in the course of 30 years. Johann Georg Pisendel (1678-1755) settled down in Dresden, in 1712, becoming a violinist at the Court Orchestra. From 1728 until his death, he occupied the post of concert master. The job of court musician in Saxony, however, did not prevent Pisendel from travelling. Beginning with April 1716, he spent 9 months in Venice where he was rumoured to have studied with Vivaldi. Pisendel’s aim was to familiarize himself with the newer performing and composition styles in Italy. Soon after his return, Dresden became the foreground of Italian music and the new capital of opera in Germany. Vivaldi’s works found a firm place in the Court Orchestra’s repertoire. The “Pisendel Sonatas” are some of Vivaldi’s most attractive and technically demanding sonatas, leaving the solo sonatas Op. 2 and Op. 5 printed respectively in 1709 and 1716 far behind. They are effective virtuoso pieces which on the strength of their presumed function as personal repertoire for chamber academies and table music display the high quality of Pisendel’s technical and interpretive abilities. As the musical fruits of a collegial artistic friendship, the five Sonatas for Violin and basso continuo simultaneously provide evidence of a personal relationship between renowned musicians.

Thrilling flights of fancy abound from violinist Arabella Steinbacher in Fantasies, Rhapsodies and Daydreams Spectacular virtuoso playing, bravura passagework and show-stopping melodies are balanced with wistful lyricism and sublime tone painting in this irresistible programme of perennial favourites, played with élan by the violinist Arabella Steinbacher with the Orchestre Philharmonique de MonteCarlo, conducted by Lawrence Foster in this new release from PENTATONE. From the high jinks and outrageous showmanship of Franz Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie and Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, to the fearsome technical demands of Ravel’s Tzigane and the exquisite refinement of Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise and Introduction et Rondo capriccioso, this album harks back to an earlier era of violin playing. On Steinbacher’s previous collaboration with Foster for PENTATONE in the Korngold and Bruch Violin Concertos, Gramophone magazine noted Steinbacher’s “easy virtuosity with concern to find the right tone and nuance for every phrase” and Foster’s “beautifully balanced accompaniment with notably expressive individual lines”. For this recording Arabella Steinbacher plays the “Booth” Stradivari from 1716, a generous loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.

Total time : 76’07 1 SACD PPD : 12,95€
On this remarkable recording, OUT OF THE SHADOWS: REDISCOVERED AMERICAN ART SONGS, a century’s worth of treasures emerge from the shadows of both memory and history. The discovery of these songs began years ago, when soprano Lisa Delan was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her teachers, some of whom were contemporaries of the composers, recognized the artistic value of several of these works. Mined from extensive research, the gems on this CD are priceless additions to the art song genre. They form a compelling body of literature that, until now, has been underrepresented or completely unrepresented on recordings. These songs honor the universality of the human experience—love, loss, faith, joy, sadness, nostalgia—in uniquely American settings. The spirit, pragmatism and romanticism of a country born in revolution and maturing in reason and hopefulness is evident in these works. It’s all here, in 31 songs by ten composers. The tonal palette of each of these composers reveals a singular style, in hues rich, varied and distinctively American.
LPH023 VAN BEETHOVEN, LUDWIG - String Quartet no.13, op.130 / Grosse Fuge, op.133 / Quinet for Piano and Winds, op.16 EDDING QUARTET - NOTHERNLIGHT
Total time : 75’15 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
The pairing of the two works on this album is unique in that one comes from the dawn, the other from the dusk of Ludwig van Beethoven’s career. Indeed, whereas the composer wrote the Quintet for winds and piano, Op. 16 when he was only 26 – the talented young man also excelled as a successful pianist –, he did not finish his String Quartet Op. 130 until a year before his death. The Edding quartet proposes here the original version of the work, with the Grosse Fuge, op.130, as final. The direct comparison of these two works on the same disc intelligently sheds light on the fantastic distance the composer covered between these two points in time. Two years after the success of their Schubert album, very warmly received by the press and public alike, the Edding Quartet and Northernlight felicitously join together once again on the same album to give new readings of these masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire. Having become major interpreters of the Classical and Romantic repertoires, the two ensembles offer expert performances, refined and precise, of two of the German composer’s finest scores.

JOHANN CHRISTOPH PEPUSCH - Venus And Adonis HENDRICK ,CLARA - PHILIPPA HYDE - RICHARD EDGARWILSON THE HARMONIOUS SOCIETY OF TICKLE-FIDDLE GENTLEMEN ROBERT RAWSON
Total time : 85’03 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
Johann Christoph Pepusch’s English-language masque Venus and Adonis premiered at London’s Theatre Royal on 12 March 1715. Inspired by the operas of composers like Giovanni Battista Bononcini and Alessandro Scarlatti, it was the most substantial effort of the period to ‘reconcile Musick to the English Tongue.’ As part of the battle for supremacy amongst London’s theatres, Pepusch recruited ‘a select Band of the best Masters of Instrumental Musick’ and two of the city’s leading singers, the ‘Italian lady’ Margarita de L’Epine en travesti as Adonis and the contralto Jane Barbier as Venus. The work bristles with Italian virtuosity and dynamism and unlike most English-language dramatic music at the time, Venus and Adonis makes ample use of dramatic recitative. A clear model for Handel’s later Acis and Galatea, this world-premiere recording of Pepusch’s wonderful masque reestablishes the work as a milestone in the history of English opera.

His unconventional take on this spectacular score evokes the astonishment audiences must have experienced at the time of the 1830 premiere. It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness – founded on a thorough knowledge of the score – and the sheer joy of making music together that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new chief conductor.

After the Musical Europe of the Renaissance (RIC 106), this journey through the history of early music, marked out by Jérôme Lejeune, arrives at the Baroque era. Here, after Italy in Monteverdi’s time (RIC 107), we have music in France under the reign of Louis XIV. MUSIC IN THE DAYS OF LOUIS XIV French music of the Grand Siècle has its roots in the polyphonic tradition of the Renaissance. During the reign of Louis XIV, the longest in the history of France (72 years), French music imposed itself as an important alternative to the Italian style, which seemed to conquer the rest of Europe quite quickly. Courtly music imposed its models in the capital, and provincial cities tried to keep pace with the means at their disposal. With the court’s institutions (La Chapelle, L’Écurie, La Chambre du Roi, the XXIV Violins or the Académie royale), France created models that would prolong Louis XIV’s Century during the Age of Enlightenment. The suite, the ouverture, the tragédie en musique, the grand motet and solo motets stand out as powerful identities of French music.
RIC368 KERLL / FUX - Requiems
This recording presents two Austrian requiems of totally different character. Johann Joseph Fux wrote his Requiem in 1720 for the funeral of Eleonora von Neuburg, widow of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II. Composed by a musician reputed for his theoretical skill, it impresses with the quality of the polyphonic writing combined with a very rich instrumental fabric comprising cornetts, trombones and bassoon in addition to violins, instruments also benefiting from concertante interventions. This requiem was played on numerous occasions for official ceremonies, including again for the funeral of Karl VI in 1740. On the other hand, Johann Caspar Kerll’s version is presented in a much more intimist way. As he himself stated in the preface to the edition, this requiem was written «for my soul’s peace». It is scored for an ensemble of five voices backed up by a quartet of viols. In a more archaic style, its intense emotion is doubtless influenced by the music of his Roman master, Giacomo Carissimi.

RIC370 DE LASSUS, ROLAND - Canticum canticorum CHOEUR DE CHAMBRE DE NAMUR - CLEMATIS - LEONARDO GARCÍA ALARCÓN At the height of the Renaissance, the music of Orlande de Lassus frequently combines the emotion of secular music with sacred compositions. With their erotic connotations, the texts of The Song of Songs are an ideal source for bringing together sacred and profane feelings. Based on his most famous song, Lassus wrote one of his unitary masses: Suzanne un jour. Along with the Magnificat that he composed on De Rore’s madrigal Ancor che col partire, here are two religious compositions of which the themes are borrowed from evocations of amorous turmoil.

When a string quartet and a cellist have the opportunity to collaborate, it is almost always to play the magnificentSchubert Quintet in C Major. Not surprisingly, as this monumental work would make it into any discussion of chamber music’s GOAT–greatest of all time. The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its third decade, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications in its tours across the United States and abroad. Their performances regularly take place in many of the world’s most important concert halls, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. At the same time, the Quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has also drawn the foursome to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace, schools, juvenile prisons, and the White House. Widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, Zuill Bailey is a distinguished soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, Artistic Director and teacher. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today.

Captivating. Powerful. Monumentally expressive. All brilliantly displayed in the newest Christmas release from Sono Luminus, Surrounded by Angels. From the opening unison strings of “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” to the last note of “Silent Night”, this CD courses with the extraordinary arrangements of Ensemble Galilei, created by musicians whose musical sensibilities have been shaped by their personal histories. Each renowned in their fields – two winners of the All-Ireland Senior Championship, two winners of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship, a four-time winner of the U.S. National Scottish Harp Championship, one Fulbright Scholar – they bring phenomenal talents to bear. What comes from this wealth of experience and expertise is an astonishing recording. A set of whimsical Irish slip jigs follows “Greensleeves”. The uillean pipes, soulful and wild, solo on the familiar “Wexford Carol”. The violin, viola and viola da gamba transform “I Wonder as I Wander”. Each track a revelation, Ensemble Galilei has made Surrounded By Angels so rich and so deep that it transcends the genres of Irish or Scottish or Early Music. So much more than the sum of its parts, this is the recording that will stand year after year as the most beloved recording for the Christmas season.

Ravel’s predilection for fantasy worlds and exotic ambience can be heard in many of his orchestral works. Even as a student he composed the Ouverture de Shéhérazade and had planned to write an opera based on the fairy tales of the Arabian Nights. In the end, all that remains are three poems for voice and orchestra. Stéphanie d’Oustrac sings these songs rapturously and with exactly the right feel for oriental opulence The main work on this CD, however, is of course the comic opera L’heure espagnole, which touches on another subject that attracted Ravel: Spain. The score reminds one of musical accompaniments to old silent movies; the rich instrumentation includes chimes, cuckoo pipes, celesta and many percussion instruments. These bring to life the ambient sounds of the watchmaker’s shop, in which the story of Concepcion and her lovers takes place. An excellent cast of singers, supported by a highly responsive orchestra – what more could one ask for?

Considering Poland’s turbulent political history, it is surprising that the country has produced so many outstanding composers, particularly those of the 20th century. Following the Second World War and Stalin’s death, the creativity that had previously been suppressed by the country’s regime exploded at the 1956 music festival “Warsaw Autumn”,revealing Poland’s tremendous musical potential to a global audience that was astonished by what it heard. Thematically, this collection of great Polish choral works turns between religion, war and Polish folk culture. The wide range and compositional depth of the pieces are simply spectacular. The SWR Vokalensemble presents them throughout with its customary exceptional precision and powerful expressivity.

Total time : 70’53 1 CD PPD : 12,95€
The Genoese violinist Niccolò Paganini revolutionised violin playing more than anyone before him or since. He was a brilliant individualist who inexorably progressed from a small Italian province to achieve global success. His sensational technical innovations and his striking imitations of the sounds of other instruments are legendary. It seems virtually impossible for today’s musicians to recreate the magic of Paganini’s multi-faceted playing. However, Salvatore Accardo, born in Torino in 1941, emerged early on to become the champion of Paganini’s legacy. Probably the greatest Italian violinist of his generation, Accardo was already playing Paganini’s complete 24 Capricci Op. 1 in public by the age of 13. After winning several prestigious music competitions, he began his international career in the late 1960s, recording for leading record labels and becoming a distinguished teacher. Ernest Bour conducted recordings of the former Symphony Orchestra of the Southwestern Broadcasting Corporation in Baden-Baden (Südwestfunk, SWF), and was well known for his focus on accuracy, clarity of form and elegance – all aspects that corresponded perfectly with Accardo’s own musical approach.

The Ballets russes was a series of ballet events held in Paris between 1909 and 1929, founded by the Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev. He developed traditional 19th-century ballet into new expressive heights of artistic synthesis, hiring the best composers, painters, stage and costume designers and, of course, choreographers of the day. Numerous masterpieces, milestones in the history of 20th-century music, owe their existence to his initiative–among them Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps, Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Falla’s Dreispitz. The series Diaghilev – Les ballets russes, which has been supported for many years now by the SWR, has committed itself to the goal of presenting ALL the works composed for Diaghilev’s ballet series, in comprehensive booklet notes. The SWRmusic label is cooperating in this process with the foundation of the highly respected choreographer John Neumeier. Furthermore, the two pieces by Stravinsky included on this CD are indisputed masterpieces of the 20th century. Composed in 1910 and 1928, they cover almost the complete life cycle of the Ballets russes. Official ballet history considers its première performance, in the version by George Balanchine, as the birth of modern ballet. Balanchine’s neoclassic vision of dancing, seen here for the first time in its pure form, would shape dance productions of the western world for the next 40 years and reach far beyond the Iron Curtain.

Annie Fischer enjoys a singular reputation within the great tradition of Hungarian pianists due to her deeply moving and romantically intimate performances. She became famous and admired on account of her uncompromising, spiritually absorbing interpretations. But she left behind only a few studio recordings; like many other musicians, she was critically opposed to working in the studio. Her recordings of the Mozart concertos for EMI, however, became benchmark interpretations. Most of Annie Fischer’s commercial recordings appeared in the 1950s and 1960s, up until her husband’s death in 1968. She retired from the podium in grief for some time afterwards. Fortunately, some of this great artist’s live recordings have been preserved. In February 1958, Annie Fischer was the guest soloist with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, under its long-time chief conductor Hand Müller-Kray, playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major K482. One year later, in February 1959, she performed Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the Symphony Orchestra of the Southwestern Broadcasting Corporation in Baden-Baden (Südwestfunk, SWF), conducted by the legendary Hans Rosbaud – a particularly attractive recording that demonstrates how different temperaments can come together to form a captivating overall picture.

Fritz Wunderlich’s exceptional voice is heard heresinging festive arias. There is no comparable compilation available on the market. These are recordings from 1955-1959.Fritz Wunderlich’s early recording of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, from a performance in the Stuttgart Markuskirche on 18th December 1955, presents the singer of the century at the beginning of his career. One rarely hears Bach sung with such a sensual voice, and rarely is one so enraptured by a voice like that of Fritz Wunderlich. This is also the case with the recording of Handel’s Messiah, conducted by Heinz Mende, from a concert in the Stuttgart Liederhalle on 20th March 1959. By this time, Wunderlich already had a string of successes behind him and was well on his way to achieving worldwide fame. The other performances in this collection took place between those two recordings: they are studio recordings, all of them rarities from Wunderlich’s repertoire, which exist only in this early series of Stuttgart radio productions.

In practical terms, we might imagine we are taking a walk in a street of an Italian city, at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Our gaze and our attention are attracted by a series of musical objects that come from different backgrounds: each, in its own way, relates and represents a different possible interaction between man and music, between the needs of the former and the function of the latter. So the musical content of this CD presents a cross-section of the typical aesthetic features and diversified representative expressions that were most appreciated by the public during the late Renaissance and early Baroque. The idea of the opposition between thesis and antithesis became the driving force of an astonishing creativeness. Ciaccone, Passacaglie, Canzonette, Villanelle and various dances were the synthesis of an ardent, sparkling musical and social energy. The style of the ensemble’s performance stems chiefly from the study of the iconographic sources, from which there emerges an artistic production that is targeted not exclusively at the educated class, but also, and above all, at the people: the practice of music was enjoyed in the streets, houses and taverns, and often depicted in joyful, sensual, lewd attitudes. Precisely in those places where there was no etiquette, music became an “art form” and a mirror of the period, perhaps in a more complete, genuine way than it did else where.

In the last decade of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, two generations of musicians, one against the other, lived side by side: one having a late-romantic education, and leaving a mark on the stage with masterpieces like Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Andrea Chénier, Adriana Lecouvreur with Giacomo Puccini as a glorious and sound leader, the other being a host of composers born around 1880 (the so-called generazione dell’Ottanta, generation of the 80s, including Pizzetti, Respighi, Casella, Malipiero) who would meticolously commit themselves to get Italy free from the melodrama oppression and set Italy at the same level of the great European countries (France and Germany), equipping it with an important repertoir of symphonic, instrumental and vocal chamber music. The Quartetto Mitja and the Orchestra Nazionale Artes - directed by Andrea Vitiallo - here perform the first and the last of the quartets by Malipiero and the Sinfonia “degli archi”, three fundamental works to understand how the recovery of the tradition is crucial in the aesthetics of the Italian historical twentieth century.

The concert project entitled “In the Sphere of Sound as Crossroad of Cultures” wants to draw a semantic and aesthetic musical path based on the investigation of timbres carried out by the Italian contemporary composers from Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988) to Davide Anzaghi (1936) and Biagio Putignano (1960). Recalling the concept of sound in its “rotundity”, the concert program recorded in this CD shows the interweaving of different musical perspectives in order to interpret the idea of sound as “a crossroad of cultures”, i.e. a meeting point of diverse traditions and timbres. This CD is the product of the live recording concert held on 11th December 2014 at the Museo Casa Scelsi in Rome and broadcasted live by Radio CEMAT as part of the events organized by the Isabella Scelsi Foundation in collaboration with the Italian Society of Contemporary Music (SIMC). The CD is a world premiere of two works by the Italian composers Davide Anzaghi and Biagio Putignano. Moreover this live recording stands out by the fact that it was performed on the historic Giacinto Scelsi’s Bechstein piano and on his own percussion instruments, he had purchased during his travels abroad.

The opening notes were startling-I had the disturbing but exhilarating feeling that music was actually being made in my room, not merely reproduced.... the four players seemed almost within reach, and my room seemed to expand around me. [I was ] completely transfixed....» --Kal Rubinson, Stereophile «Matheson’s String Quartet is an impressive piece of work. Thirty-two minutes long, it is brimming with ideas; the richness of their number is palpable…. The String Quartet is, perhaps first and foremost, beautifully orchestrated, the combination of instruments used to create one wondrous color after another. Motor rhythms and repeated patterns juice forward progress; these ideas move through tonal progressions, reaching plateaus of more static material (at least in the first two movements) - meditative, starry-skied, rapt. Louis Armstrong made music for people. It was important to him to communicate in all directions, both with his colleagues on stage and with the audience. In the 1950s he became one of the most famous jazz musicians, but also known beyond the sphere of jazz, even though many listeners had already turned towards pop and rock & roll. The 1950s were for Armstrong all in all an ambivalent decade. The audience loved him, but if their skin colour was black they were not allowed to attend some of his concerts in his homeland. At any rate, Armstrong was frequently on the road: in 1956 on his acclaimed tour of Africa, a year later in South America, and repeatedly in Europe, performing concerts with his All Stars in Stockholm, Umeå, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and also in Stuttgart, in 1959. With him in the Liederhalle was his proven team of Trummy Young, Peanuts Hucko, Billy Kyle, Mort Herbert, Danny Barcelona and the blues singer Velma Middleton with a programme ranging from his theme song When It’s Sleep Time Down South to earworms like Mack The Knife. The concert in the Liederhalle is one of the unclouded high-points before the strenuous life of the jazz superstar began to take its toll on his work.

Featured in the 2014 film Whiplash, which is set in the world of jazz drumming, this track showcases the talents of his rhythm section: Ben Reynolds (drums) and Tom Farmer (bass). With songs taken from across the decades (a special 80s medley is a highlight) this is a must for film fans.

The reopening show of the historical stage of the Bolshoi Theatre by Jurowski and Tcherniakov. «Ruslan and Lyudmila», opera by Mikhail Glinka, has particular relation with the Bolshoï Theater, it held more than 700 representations throughout the history and nine different productions. Logically the fable of Mikhail Glinka (from a poem of Pushkin), symbol of the Russian opera, opened the season 2011-2012 of the majestic Moscow’s opera, after its long renovation. This reopening inspired the director Dmitri Tcherniakov, who signed the direction of this new production. The new devices of the Bolshoi Theatre and its two giant screens are fully exploited in a spectacular staging. Tcherniakov transposes Glinka’s opera at the 21th century with contemporary ambitions because of the «modernity of the subject», trying there to put forward «the deep feelings of the characters”, exposing the protagonists to very modern temptations: a «harem» for Ruslan, a Thai massage for Lyudmila… Vladimir Jurowski conducts The Bolshoi Theater Orchestra and a magnificent distribution with among others Albina Shagimuratova, Mikhail Petrenko, Alexandrina Pendatchanska, Charles Workman and Elena Zaremba. A production acclaimed for its musical quality and its staging.

For many great artists the garden has long been considered an desirable subject for the expression of colour, light and atmosphere. Claude Monet is perhaps the most well-known painter of gardens but other greats such as Van Gogh, Pissarro, Matisse and Sargent all viewed the garden as a meaningful focus for their talents. The work of these great artists, along with many others, feature in a major exhibition, ‘Painting the Modern Garden’, from The Royal Academy, London. This dazzling film takes a magical journey from the gallery to the gardens, to Giverny and Seebüll and other glorious grounds favoured by artists. Here we discover how early twentieth century artists designed and cultivated their own gardens to explore contemporary utopian ideas and motifs of colour and form.Monet said, ‘Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything’. For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film.
