It’s sad to think
People want to make a buck even on the oil spill! SHAME ON THEM…
S
windlers, scammers and even strippers are said to be flocking to the Gulf Coast in search of a piece of the $20 billion BP has set aside to compensate residents for spillrelated losses. Adjusters passing out emergency funds in Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states are on high alert for fraud even as they pay out legitimate claims following the oil rig explosion and spill that devastated the livelihoods of many fishermen, tourism workers and others. Understandably, they need to be compensated for their losses, but the promise of a handout has attracted the unscrupulous, who have flocked to the Gulf in a bid to cash in and may have opened the door to fraud. Is this not the epitome of a warped society! BP has so far paid $201 million out of its $20 billion fund to residents and businesses in the Gulf Coast states. Fishermen and shrimpers have received $50 million of that pie. But of the over 100,000 claims submitted, nearly half failed to provide key documentation, according to BP. There are 36 claims offices throughout the Gulf states. Early this month, the claims process was transferred from BP to Kenneth Feinberg, a highpowered attorney tasked by President Obama to oversee the damage claims process. Speaking recently in Louisiana, Feinberg stressed his willingness to pay legitimate claimants. That willingness to pay has just opened the door to trouble, as a result people are lining up for $$. Has anybody thought about the environmental repercus-
sion of funds not being properly disbursed for this environmental clean-up of a lifetime? And more crooks continue to surface as in one scam making the circuit, boat captains vouch for fake out-of-work ship deck workers who share with the captains a cut of their BP payment. Adjusters are now wise to the scheme, using a boat registration number that can show whether a boat with a capacity for x number of workers, has a phantom crew of double that number--all seeking funds. Double shame on them! Applications for Louisiana commercial fishing licenses also reveal foul play in motion. The department of wildlife and fisheries processed applications for 85 such licenses in April, about a week before the spill. Ironically, a month later, that number rose to 122 applications, following the news that BP would pay claims to fishermen with active licenses. To make it worse fraud is not only directed at BP-local residents are also potential victims now. The Federal Trade Commission recently warned that scammers were likely to go door to door, or use email or websites, to solicit funds for fraudulent environmental causes or pretend to be authorized adjusters who need upfront fees to expedite claims. While times are tough and even though the ocean and wildlife are severely endangered by this massive oil spill, crooks are like buzzards out there trying to cash in on this environmental tragedy. Maybe we should let these human vultures eat tar balls and see how they like it…

¿

uring my last visit to Aruba, I had the opportunity to visit a very cozy restaurant and lounge, not even officially opened yet, and I felt so certain that this was going to be a success that I proceeded to meet with the owners to congratulate them on such a refreshing new dining, wining and lounging concept. Grand Café 21, in Palm Beach, is run by a delightful couple, Michael and Mireille Heilker, with many years of excellent track record as restaurateurs in both Surinam and Holland. I had a wonderful conversation with the lovely owner Mireille, while my eight year old passed out on one of their comfy sofas. Thank God! I was having so much fun; I didn’t even realize the time had gotten away from me. Grand Café 21 is a mix of lovely elegance in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphe-
re where you can just come to sit and hear music and have a few drinks and/or dine, hear piano and even watch TV. Music is played to your flavor and there is live music on Sundays starting at 10 pm. Finally, an old- fashion dinner and dance spot on Aruba. I highly recommend it. The menu features Caribbean-French fusion dishes prepared by chef Elzing like Aruba Crab and Corn Chowder, Coquille St. Jacques, New Zealand Lamb Chops, savory escargot, frog legs, local fresh catch and prime steaks at a super affordable prices, as we are all on a budget these days, it makes it even more attractive to hang out and/or dine there on a regular basis. They have a great selection of fine wines and liquors for every price range. The restaurant is open from Tuesdays thru Sunday from 4 pm till……

he airport tax for flights between Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao will be reduced from $37 to $20 and should be in effect over the next few weeks. With the tax reduction, the Ministers of Tourisms of the ABC islands hope to increase the number of passengers between the islands. The airport tax is actually a service charge from the air-
port itself. It is meant to finance the large-scale renovation projects, such as Aruba’s airport renovations which will not be completed until 2015. The thinking is that although the airport will have less revenue, the Airport Authority expects that they can recover half that amount though the increase of passenger traffic between the islands.

he hotel industry is slowly recovering from the economical crisis, as per recent published figures from Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (Ahata). The occupancy rate of the hotels was well over 6 % higher in the first half of 2010 compared to 2009. However, the average price of a hotel room fell from $197 to $190 dollars (3.3%), as the hotels lowered prices to attract guests. Despite the economy, 3.9% more tourists from the American market had visited Aruba and the number of transit stopovers had increased with 2.4% compared

with the first half of 2009. The number of tourists from Canada had increased by as much as 17.7%, but that of the second most important market – Venezuela – had decreased by 19.3% because of the country’s travel and financial restrictions, although unofficial Venezuelan sources confirm the restrictions should be overturned in the near future. But despite the Venezuela market lag, Latin American passenger travel increased as there had been 33% more tourists from Argentina. The 156% increase of the number of tourists from Brazil was a great surprise for Aruba.

The airline company will offer daily flights from Caracas and Maracaibo and Valencia to Miami using Aruba as a hub. This in transit opportu-

Mainly, the Reina Beatrix airport will attract more Venezuelan passengers who may want to stop over in Aruba for a few days before going to Miami or on their way back from Miami. The agreement is also good news for airport businesses, as they will attract more customers. The agreement offers the airport authority AAA the possibility of making additional revenues in fees from the landing and parking of aircrafts at Aruba’s airport.

xcitement was high for the islands of the Dutch Caribbean during the World Cup 2010 as the undefeated Dutch team worked their way up the ranks to defeat five-time world cup winners Brazil in the quarter finals. They faced off against Uruguay, twice former champions, on Wednesday, July 7, for an historic game that left Dutch fans in a frenzy of optimism as Holland readied to battle for the championship title for the third time, something that eluded them in 1972 and 1978. Would this be the year? Immortal soccer star Johan Cruyff, who began his career with Ajax, the Dutch team, but coached and lived in Barcelona for the past decades, predicted Spain would take the championship. On July 11, there was not a venue with a giant screen to be found on Aruba not packed to capacity with customers and staff garbed in orange while sporting some very creative headgear and
makeup. A long, tough battle saw both teams working hard to make soccer history, but it was Spain who finally scored a goal during overtime that took home the victory. Spain was as much an “underdog” as Holland, as they had never made it past the quarter finals in 80 years of World Cup history, and this year distinguished themselves as the first team to win the championships after having lost their first game. It was an exciting time for islanders as they rooted for “the home team,” proud of their Dutch citizenship and the performance of their soccer stars. The next World Cup will be in Brazil in 2014, the nation whose team has won the championship more times than any other, but was defeated by Holland this year. Will they be able to repeat that victory on their home ground? Islanders have packed their crazy hats and outfits, ready to air them out for a Dutch victory the next time around.

Horoscope

August 2010
ARIES: 21 March - 19 April
The summer heat could go straight to your head in August. With fiery Mars in your sign tempers and temperatures are set to soar into the stratosphere. A difficult aspect from Mars to the area of your chart ruling home and family could see you clashing with your nearest and dearest. A better way to channel this energy is into love and sex especially in the middle of the month when your ruler forms a devastating link with romantic Venus and passionate Pluto. By the end of August your energy levels will settle to a more constant and manageable pace, perfect for getting on top of any practical issues.
TAURUS: 20 April - 20th May
You start the month focused and wanting to be taken seriously. Others will be convinced by your methodical approach making this an ideal time to deal with officials like bank managers, accountants and bosses. Things will soon lighten up for you, an encounter with someone who ‘lights your candle’ perhaps. Expect life to get really hot when your ruler Venus teams up with fiery Mars and Pluto promising fireworks mid August. You can be sure this situation will remain steamy and by the end of the month when Venus links with unpredictable Uranus you could find yourself acting in a way that surprises everyone as well as you.
GEMINI: 21 May -21 June
Keeping a watchful eye on the cash flow can be dreary, especially when your friends our out making the most of summer. It can feel as if you’re missing out on all the fun. But don’t despair because when you’re off on a bigger better holiday than everyone else you’ll be glad you saved your dough. You can expect to feel the heat this summer in more ways than one. Your ruler Mercury is involved in a dramatic link between some very sexy planets - Mars, Venus and Pluto. So you will soon find your love life reaching boiling point by mid August. Your intellect is sharp now so use the benefits of this by using bits of information you have to your advantage.
CANCER: 22 June - 22 August
You’re full of life this month, but what exactly are you achieving from all this activity? There’s a chance you’ll be getting little in return for all your gallant efforts. This can be frustrating but a bright idea at the end of the month will help you find a solution to this. You’re likely to feel all hot and bothered this August, but try not to let the sun go your head. Just remember that keeping call means keeping calm. The best advice for you is avoid mid day burn out and instead make the most of warm balmy nights which is much more your style. Evenings are your time so get plenty of siestas in order to make the most of those midnight fiestas.
LEO: 23 August - 22 August
August sees you at your most charming. Smooth talk comes easily and you’re quite happy to use it on any unsuspecting individual you take a shine to. You adore attention and there’s no shortage this month, but you’re generous with praise too and people will love to bask in the warm glow you’re emitting. It’ll leave you walking on cloud nine and everyone is going to know about it! You’re in for some summer sizzle this August with an equally fiery partner and there could be a connection with foreign places too. Perhaps a holiday romance or a romantic interlude with someone from abroad is on the cards. Either way you’re in for a good time.
VIRGO: 23 August - 22 September
Strong undercurrents from other people are making you feel a little on edge. It seems everyone’s behaving oddly as though the sun’s gone to their heads. Even you’re acting a bit out of character. However you should be able to smooth over any brewing trouble with soothing words that just roll off the tongue. Those dulcet tones could prove very useful in August when someone special is seduced by your pleasing manner. But charm disguises a burning inside which is demanding release. You can easily deliver on the passionate promises you utter. There’s no escaping when you switch on the charm offensive.
LIBRA: 23 September - 22 October
You’re determined to set the world on fire in August. You’re feeling hot and ready to take the plunge with someone special. The passion and ferocity of Mars and Pluto join up with your ruler Venus this month giving you the power to set pulses racing. No one will be able to resist your confidence. This is an important month in an important year for you. With expansive Jupiter in your sign (it only happens once every twelve years) it’s time for you to make the most of each opportunity that comes your way. Expect to be seeing more of the world and letting the world see more of you.
SCORPIO: 23 October - 21 November
A powerful and meaningful connection with someone is on the cards, whether you know them or not already. Your ruler Pluto in harmony with Mars and Venus means love and passion in equal measures. You’re a force to be reckoned with and when you set your sights on your ideal partner there will be no stopping you getting them, whether they like it or not! I doubt anyone would argue with you even if they could, it’s a huge ego boost to be so utterly adored. You may also be tempted to take a big financial risk this month, but practice caution if you can because there’s no guarantee of a settled outcome.
SAGITTARIUS: 22 November - 21 December
You’re feeling wonderfully energized as the month starts, leaving others in your wake as you bounce from one task to another. Watch out for ego clashes with other strong personalities who want the limelight too. Mid August sees you embroiled in heated exchanges with individuals for whom you can barely disguise your passion. Pluto in your sign harmoniously connected with Mars and Venus sends your pulse racing and your mind conjuring up all sorts of thrilling escapades for yourself and your amour. You are a born traveller and philanthropist and now is a great time to in indulge both of these.
CAPRICORN: 22 December - 16 January
The month begins with a feeling of harmony and balance and you are feeling a bit more confident about your financial circumstances. You feel at ease expressing your deeper feelings to loved ones too. However as the month moves forward the possibility of some tension between your work and domestic life increases, but any challenges you face could be a positive way of clearing the air and therefore making progress in both these areas. If the tension in the air does boil over you can be consoled by the fact that it’s all a storm in a tea cup and will settle soon.
ACUARIUS: 20 Janurary - 18 February
Arguments with siblings, close friends and partners are possible this month and any trouble that does occur could simple be little more than hot air and bravado from all parties concerned. Day to day activities and getting about your normal routine, things you normally take for granted, could be fraught with complications and upsets in August. Try not to be everywhere at once or race about trying to achieve too many things; no one is expecting miracles so stop trying to perform them. Relationships have taken a serious turn recently, and this will become a focus of the month, but you should start seeing the situation more clearly.
PISCES: 19 February - 20 March
August is a good month to pour your energy into sorting out money matters and embarking on schemes that will see your cash working harder for you. Thinking of all the adventures you could soon afford to go on will be more than enough of an incentive to get wise with your dough - money equals freedom for you this month. Be careful not to fall for the charms of sweet talkers who aren’t exactly what they are making themselves out to be. Overall you can expect to be putting in a lot of effort this month and working hard in a lot of areas in your life but things will settle down toward the end of August.
