from Elyi #65
by elyimagazine
2023 marks 1350 years since a monastery was first established by St. Etheldreda in Ely in AD 673. To mark the occasion, Ely Cathedral is celebrating the life and legacy of this remarkable Saxon Queen who became a Saint, with a year-long programme of events, concerts, services and exhibits. Highlights include:
• A new guided tour centring on Etheldreda’s dramatic life. • A timeline of visual interpretation depicting the four key stages of her life from East Anglian Princess to Anglo Saxon Saint. • A specially commissioned theatre production focused on Etheldreda presented by Time Will Tell Theatre. • A commemorative floral display depicting Etheldreda’s life. • Two special festival services, June and October, celebrated by the Archbishop of York. • A gala performance of Handel’s Messiah by the Britten Sinfonia. • Son et Lumière Evenings.
Please check the Cathedral website for dates and times of these special events plus many other activities taking place across the city to commemorate this historic anniversary year for Ely. www.elycathedral.org
