WELCOME ...from the Editor

EDITORIAL & DESIGN

Dear Readers,

Editor Bridget Hickish 01353 662684 editor@elyimagazine.com

How lovely to be back with you so soon with more information for October here in Ely. The Autumn leaves are falling and the local outside spaces take on a completely different flavour, inhabited by swaddled children kicking leaves and by faster paced walkers than in those balmy summer months.

ADVERTISING Advertising Manager Madeleine Funnell 01353 664920 07739 260 027 advertising@elyimagazine.com

There are lots of events to keep us busy, no let up! Councillor Ian Lindsay goes about his full calendar of civic duties as Mayor and plans are well underway for the Charity Quiz on 20th October to be held at the Maltings.

We have an early shout-out for Ely Consort (page 14) performing a real feast of music at Ely Methodist Church in November and Matt Harvey’s October dramatic recommendation is to enjoy some Ayckbourn wit and word play towards the end of the month, performed by EADS at Ely College (page 16).

Traditionally, it’s a time of year to be thankful and as usual many churches are having their Harvest services during October. See page 29 for the Cathedral services and each church’s website for details of individual services. The middle of the month sees the return of the annual Ely Apple Festival (page 50). A day of all things Appley!!

There are a few new additions to the groups and meets section. Do have a look and see if there is something for you there and a continued thank you to all our advertisers who, by their use of the magazine, sponsor all free space to non profit groups. Best wishes Bridget x www.elyimagazine.com

Ian Lindsay, Mayor of Ely The school summer holiday period has been reflected in a relatively quiet month in terms of mayoral duties. On the other hand, there is no let up in the number of council meetings and committee meetings. Some of my activities get reported in the local press, but some do not. One of the latter was particularly fascinating. A number of mayors and county council leaders were invited to a tea with the Lord Mayor of London in the Mansion House, London on the 350th anniversary day of

Strangely, Devonshire made the biggest single gift from the counties, while, less strangely, York gave the most from the towns and cities. Continuing a historical theme, as part of the Ely heritage weekend, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Richard Hobbs, and I acted as guides for tours of the courthouse on Saturday 10th of September. We were able to welcome around 45 visitors on 3 separate tours. It’s a wonderful building, and we have just submitted a planning application to insert a lift for the disabled so that it will eventually be fully accessible to all. We can then look forward to hosting a much wider range of events, particularly utilising the unique features of the court room. Sadly, one of our councillors has resigned from the council. His replacement will be chosen through a local election on Thursday 6th October. Just after this we will be holding our annual Civic Service at the Cathedral on Sunday 9th of October, and, on a lighter note, the Mayor’s Quiz, will be held at the Maltings on the evening of Thursday 20th October. I’ll have plenty to report in the next edition of this splendid magazine Cllr. Ian Lindsay

Thursday 20th October 2016 Doors 7pm for 7:30pm Start the start of the fire of London. The chosen guests were representing towns and counties that made donations to help rebuild the City of London after the calamity. Ely donated £130 out of total donations of £12,794. Our gift ( presumably mostly financed by the Cathedral) was worth about £20,000 out of a total of £1.9 million in today’s money. This was somewhere in the middle of the sums given, so, even then, Ely clearly did things in moderation. It was a splendid setting, and it was fascinating to see the actual records of the gifts and contemporary accounts of the fire and its effects. 4 Elyi Magazine | October 2016

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Sweet Feast of Music from Ely Consort! The local chamber choir Ely Consort have built a considerable reputation in recent years for their fine singing and eclectic programming, both of which will be evident in their next concert which takes place in Ely Methodist Church on Saturday 19 November 2016 at 7.30 pm.

Hannah Mulholland playing romantic violin solos, including Elgar’s famous ‘Chanson de Matin’ and Massenet’s ‘Méditation’. Pianist Charlie Penn will be accompanying a number of pieces, and both he and Hannah will join with the choir in Eric Whitacre’s ‘Five Hebrew Love Songs’ for choir, violin and piano. The concert finishes with Bob Chilcott’s ‘Gloria’, a lively and melodic composition by a former member of the King’s Singers, whose music is loved by singers and audiences alike.

The church is renowned for its amazingly rich accoustics, and the programme has been specially chosen to take full advantage of this. The concert includes three new settings of texts by Shakespeare written for his quarter centenary this year; Elgar’s incredibly beautiful setting of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s words ‘There is sweet music’; and ‘Unicornis captivatur’, a most remarkable recent composition by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, which uses an incredible mixture of medieval sounds and dance-like music to tell the story of the ‘captured unicorn’, an extraordinary text written in a Swiss monastery over six hundred years ago!

This Autumn settle back and enjoy a selection of modern short plays! Confusions is a series of witty and clever short plays from acclaimed playwright Alan Ayckbourn. Ely Amateur Dramatic Society will be bringing three of the plays to Ely College on Thursday 27th, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October 2016. The three plays will be Mother Figure, Gosforths Fete & Between Mouthfuls.

anything that can go wrong, does. And in Between Mouthfuls, couples work through their relationship issues made especially awkward when the two men also work for each other”. Shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 from the box office, Burrows Bookshop 01353 669759, or online at £9.95 (which includes a booking fee) from www. ticketsource.co.uk/elyamateurdramaticsociety . Don’t miss it!

From a tea tent being prepared for an afternoon fete to a hotel restaurant, the plays explore human obsession and desire in Ayckbourn’s usual witty and crafty word play. Director, Tony Ransome, tells us why you can’t miss this show: “In Mother Figure, we see a house-bound wife who spends so much of her time and attention on the children she starts to treat visiting and concerned neighbours as kids. In Gosforths Fete, a divorced, local landlord (Gosforth) tries to manage a local fete where

Tel: 01353 776312 Mob: 07760 290332 www.woodburningstoveinstallation.co.uk

You can Find Nigel Cade on the first floor of the Interiors shop in Chequer Lane Ely....when he is not out fitting a stove that is! So if you are thinking about getting a woodburner installed this Autumn then the best way to find a good service (as well as reading your local magazine) is to ask someone for a recommendation or find a review. A visit to the Cade Wood Burning Stove Installation website will show you that one thing Nigel is not short of is happy Customers. Pop along to: www.woodburningstoveinstallation.co.uk or call 01353 776312 to find out more.

Very professional

Highly Recommended!

Installation of our wood burners.

SHOW ROOM

1st Floor of Interiors of Ely, Chequer Lane

Excellent work!

Very professional and totally reliable service from Nigel and I'm delighted with the result love lighting the stove on cold evenings and enjoying just watching it.

We were recommended Nigel by our chimney sweep and found him and his team to be prompt, reliable and professional. We had both our chimneys lined and wood burners installed which they did with the minimum of mess and disruption. We were very pleased with the end result and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

Would not be without it now

Nigel installed my wood burning stove about 2 years ago. The installation process was really stress free. I am delighted with the end result - an attractive stove that is so effective and adds character and cosiness to my living room.

Fantastic product and service

Have had my stove for a couple of years, and it's fantastic. The fitting and service were also the most pain-free bit of work I've ever had done in my house - it was done when Nigel said it would be done, with no mess and no fuss. Would not hesitate to recommend Cade. I love my fire - can hardly wait for Autumn so that I can light it again

Highly recommended!

Delighted with the stove and the expert advice and installation provided by Nigel and his team. Highly recommended! Elyi Magazine | October 2016

Ely Sinfonia Presents an All American Programme Martin Roscoe Piano Steve Bingham Conductor Ely Cathedral - Sat 22 October 2016 - 7.30pm

Martin Roscoe is one of the UK’s best loved pianists. With a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, his enduring popularity and the respect in which he is universally held are built on a deeply thoughtful musicianship and an easy rapport with audiences and fellow musicians.

a real masterpiece, combining classical concerto with a plethora of ideas influenced by jazz, then at its height. An accomplished pianist, Gershwin played the solo himself at the first performance in 1933. The other pieces on the programme are also American: Leonard Bernstein’s popular Overture to Candide, and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Quiet City. These are among the most frequently performed works by 20th century American composers – and for good reason!

For this October Concert, he joins Ely Sinfonia in an allAmerican programme that includes Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide, George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring and Quiet City.

Tickets cost £24, £18 or £12 (reserved), or £7.50 (unreserved). Concessions cost £12 in the £18 seats. All tickets are available from Ely Cathedral Box Office tel 01353 660349, email box.office@elycathedral.org or online from https://tickets.elycathedral.org

George Gershwin is probably most popularly known for pieces such as An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. But his Piano Concerto in F is www.elyimagazine.com

Do you want to play the Ukulele? John Bassett, the ‘ukulele specialist’ is holding one more popular ‘ukulele workshop for beginners’ in Ely. It’s upstairs at The Maltings, near to the river. This fun-filled course is to be held every Thursday evening for four evenings in November this year. (3rd,10th,17th and 24th). John commented “Sadly it will be the last one I will hold in Ely for quite some time. I get a great buzz from seeing people, both young and old, being able to play songs on the ukulele without ever playing any musical instrument before. Gone are the days of associating the infamous ukulele with George Formby. George sadly died over fifty years ago. This ever-popular little instrument has been re-vitalized for the next generation… it’s Elvis, Bill Haley and Abba.” John has a big box full of ukuleles, tuners and music stands. People are welcome to borrow these free of charge. “This takes the pressure away of committing the novice player to purchase the little musical instrument at the outset” says John.

Be part of a very special (and popular!) event and make a real difference. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire by providing end of life care, counselling and support for adult patients with life limiting illness. Entry costs £12 for adults and £8 for children (under 16), which covers all expenses in administrating your place. It also pays for your Santa hat, medal and bottle of water.

Sign up for Christmas (!) and a fun run for charity with Ely Festive 5k Fun Run. It might be a bit early for some but Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is already planning for their festive fun run, which takes place in Ely each year. This event, supported by Ely District Council’s Sunday Market, takes place on Sunday 20th November at 11am, setting off and finishing in Ely Market Place.

Online entries are welcome at: http://www.arhc.org.uk/ely-festive-5k.asp until 1pm on 18 November and for postal entries is 16 November. Completed registration forms and entre fees can also be accepted by event sponsors Ward Gethin Archer (Market Place, Ely) and The Cambridge (High Street, Ely).

Last year’s event sold out two weeks before the registration closing date, so rather than be disappointed, you might want to sign up now, either by yourself or in a team with family, friends and colleagues. Fancy dress is optional but encouraged and every entrant will be given a Santa hat to wear for the fun run on the day. You can run, jog or walk the route, with prizes awarded for fastest male, fastest female, fastest team and best dressed.

Young stitchers win fantastic prizes Sew Much To Do Ltd, in sewing competition! 7 High Street Passage, Ely, Cambs CB7 4NB Over the summer holidays we ran a Summer Stitch 2016 competition where we asked all our budding young stitchers to submit their sewing, knitting and crochet projects on a summer theme and within a £10 budget to be in with a chance of winning a prize – and we weren’t disappointed! We asked Annabel Reddick from Burrows Bookshop just up the road in Ely High Street Passage to pick our winners on Friday 2nd September.

Tel: 01353 664000 info@sewmuchtodo.co.uk www.sewmuchtodo.co.uk Find us on Facebook!

Congratulations to Bella who won in the 9 and under category with her stitched dog scarf and Kaisha who submitted a hand stitched mermaid. Bella won a Colour Me In cushion and Kaisha won a sewing box. Both contestants also received a £10 voucher to spend in the shop. Bella dropped by on Monday 5th September to collect her prize – and brought in her model dog Teddy! She loves making him scarfs to wear on her very own mini sewing machine and is planning on making him a dog coat, just in time for winter. She was thrilled with her cushion – she was sporting a lovely bag that she had decorated with pens. She was also very excited with the voucher and spent it straight away on some Halloween fabric. We were so impressed by the creativity and skill shown by all our entrants and it was a very tough decision. All our runners up will also receive a scrap pack for future creating!

Ely Cathedral Business Group Autumn Discussion ALL CHANGE?

With seismic change underway in UK and Global politics, what effect will this have on businesses, communities and global security?

Keynote Speaker Lord Hutton of Furness Ely Cathedral Business Group believes that there is a strong correlation between the health of the business sector, and the well-being of the communities in which those businesses operate.

ELY’S APPLE FESTIVAL 2016 Ely is holding its annual Apple Festival in celebration of the great British Apple. The original idea of an Apple Celebration in Ely was the brainchild of Watergull Orchards, apple producers and previous traders at Ely’s Farmers Market. They attended many other Apple Festivals in the region and thought it would be an excellent idea to do one in Ely. Our event has now developed into one of the best festivals in the area. The event provides interest and intrigue for all sorts of people whether you are interested in the educational, environment or simply the fun angle of the day. Our experts from East of England Apples and Orchard Project will once again be in attendance to identity any apples that you care to bring along. Apparently, it is easier to identify if you can bring a long part of the stalk and/or leaf as well as the actual apple. So if you have been mystified as to what kind of apples were growing in your garden all these years, bring a sample along. There will be several competitions, woodturning demonstrations, storytelling and activities running throughout the day including the everpopular longest apple peeling competition, apple and spoon races, and apple shy. Apple delights can be tasted at the Watergull Orchards marquee where a whole range of apples and juices are on offer. There will also be a hog roast with apple sauce, pork & apple burgers and sausages. Folk music and Morris dancing will be performed throughout the day to add to the ambience of this wonderful event on Saturday 15th October. We hope to see you there!

Introducing Ely’s first Pop-up Escape Room at Oliver Cromwell’s House A group of Royalist supporters have been captured by a detachment of Cromwell’s troop stationed in Ely and before they can be dispatched to a proper, more fitting gaol and face their appropriate punishment, they are being held temporarily under armed guard in the Tithe Room of Cromwell’s former house. However, one of the guards is a Royalist sympathiser himself and has hidden a set of clues in the room along a key. The group’s mission is to locate the clues, solve puzzles and ultimately find the golden key which will allow them to make good their escape. You have 60 minutes to complete the mission and escape, otherwise the guards will return! Gather friends, family or colleagues together and see how well you work together in this fun but challenging activity that will be a talking point for weeks to come. This is the perfect activity to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary or just an excuse for a memorable activity. Popular in various countries across the world, Escape Rooms have become the must do activity and is one of the latest trends to hit the UK. Oliver Cromwell’s House is very pleased to be working with “Puzzle Master” to provide this bespoke Escape Room challenge, the first of its kind in Ely. Sessions are priced at £80 and are ideally suited for between 4 and 8 people. Bookings are now being taken. The activity also lends itself to the corporate market and sessions can be tailored to your requirements. Check out our website at www.olivercromwellshouse.co.uk for further information and booking details.
