Burlington College

THE HIDDEN TREASURE

Unbeknownst to many, Burlington College is one of the three colleges in Burlington city. Burlington College is a small, private, nontraditional liberal arts institution that has no more than 500 undergraduate students enrolled. Degrees that can be obtained at this college include an Associates Degree, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts. Burlington College’s mission is to integrate learning, personal development, and engagement in the community into a comprehensive educational opportunity. Students who attend Burlington College leave knowledgeable and skillfull in their chosen fields. The students are life long learners and active citizens who engage in

fostering a just, humane society while advancing sustainable and supportive communities. I recently had the opportunity to find myself at Burlington College. It was my pleasure to attend the opening reception of “CUBA: Street Level,” a show that represented the work of eleven photographers that had the opportunity to journey to Cube for a Street Photography class taught by Peter Curtis during their J-Term. A J-Term is a special month-long period of study in January in which students explore subjects outside their majors or minors, discover new interests, and test their creativity through classes held both on campus and around the world. Small colleges such as this one are able

to give their students travel options to optimize their potential learning and growth. The learning goals for this specific course were to understand the techniques of street photography while also developing an appreciation for the arts and culture of Havana, Cuba. The eleven students that participated this past J-Term made outstanding strides to achieve the goals and outcomes of this course to say the least. Unfortunately the photographs are no longer on display however their work can be located on Burlington Colleges website (www. burlington.edu).

South End Arts + Business Association

The Art Hop

The South End Art Hop, is a weekend long event that is hosted by the South End Arts and Business Association (SEABA). Every year, in the early fall during Labor Day weekend, SEABA strives to portray Burlington, Vermont’s “eclectic mix” of art, business and music. This event that has grown over the years is on target to be the biggest Art Hop yet! Luring in over 30,000 visitors, most of them coming from outside of the Burlington area. In total more than 500 artists participate. The mission statement of SEABA, introduces their main focuses of promoting, providing, and informing. Public galleries in the area participate to provide a platform that allows for the exploration of art and business. Gaining not only the interest of college students, tourists and most importantly local families, there is something available for each and every person at the Art Hop. This year on Friday, September 6th SEABA opened with a bang at the “Top of the Hop” Opening Party hosted by Burton Headquarters and Flagship Store down on 80 Industrial Parkway. At the party there was beer, music and an employee art 9 • The Townie

exhibit which displayed works made from recycled and reuseable materials. The hop took itself around Burlington this eventing, from the Burton factory to Main Street’s Burlington City Arts facilities. The Art Hop is an introduction to Burlington, making sure to touch on all local business from music venues to breweries. The 2013 South End Art Hop is the 21st remarkable exhibition of visual art. A majority of the event takes place on Pine Street, otherwise known as the Pine Street corridor. This area is concentrated with re-purposed factories and warehouses that make it recognizeable as the South End Arts District. The South End Art Hop is not just one medium, here you can find everything from song and dance to metal animal art sculptures. To get around this weekend, on the following page, there is a map of all the venues in the Pine Street corridor and throughout Burlington. You can also pick up an official Art Hop guide which will tell you in more detail what is going on during this weekend. Even if the art isn’t what exactly draws you into the Art Hop, there are many other “art” mediums

that one can explore. The Art Hop is a “collision of mediums and atmosphere that artistic commingling creates that makes going to see music in galleries, shops and parking lots along Pine Street something close to magical” (Dan Bolles). While the music will surely be flowing we are to not forget about the little stores on Pine Street that are remarkably hidden. Speaking Volumns, a small set back record store, thrives from the publicity that brings people to Pine Street. It was my pleasure to not only go into Speaking Volumns and get lost in the numerous amounts of records that can

“It’s the vibe South End has that’s due to creative business and people who have studios. When you come down here, you have a different sense of Burlington; its culture, artists and that’s one of the main reasons the Art Hop has grown over the last few years.” Adam Brooks

Exectuive Director

be found in their unique and extensive collection of vintage vinyl. Among other interesting additions to the weekend long event. There are many opportunities for the community to get involved. With activities specifically set aside for children to community art projects, there is something in the air for everyone. Please do join us again next year for the 22nd annual South End Art Hop! Until then, enjoy your fall! See you next year.

In our first issue of The Townie we planned to make it simplistic but yet still creative. We strove to capture the essence of Burlington as an eclectic city filled with music, art and culture. For those who live here and for those who do not, Burlington is full of mysterious and sometimes unknown facets. Our publication is meant to bring the usual or unusual “townie” back into the know. From informing the reader about which bars have a drink deals on this day or that and highlighting popular as well as basement music at Burlington’s various venues to calling out events such as the South End Art Hop and making the reader aware of what they may or may

not know is around them, my colleagues and I plan to inform and enlighten each and every person who picks up this publication. This issue is meant to show that we are all bound together by a common thread of exploration. Uncovering the unknown is what we strive to do. Delving into Burlington for not what it is on the surface but for what lurks within. Each issue will give the townie in you just a little something more to look forward to! Until next time,
