I have a habit of picking up my mug by the handle with my right hand (with thumb pressing on the higher curve and four fingers in the loop), and drinking the beverage closer to the right side of the rim. When I attempt to pay attention to how I handle my favourite mug, I realize my hand naturally repeats these gestures, as if it has a memory of its own. I guess our body naturally search for, and return to the same few comfortable spots when we interact with any objects. That connection we build with an object in relation to the natural familiarity.

For the past few years I have been exploring a storytelling approach to making pottery. My artwork explores the idea of using space that seems to remain un-noticed when a person handles an object. For example that further edges on the rim of a mug, or the centre of a soup bowl. By adding human-like figures to the traditional pottery form, each of my pieces is embedded with a narration. My artwork long for viewers who enjoy its unique story, as well as the function it serves as an object. I hope you’ll enjoy viewing my work as much as I enjoy making them. Cheers, Ema
