PHILOSOPHY ON

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Being an architect is not an easy task as architects should be aware of “many things of everything” including; humane design, culture and humanity, cost, and technology. Any design starts with listening to clients, intensive research and observation, and ends up with different possibilities. As a result, any design is advised to respond to the needs of people which define the culture of place. Therefore, any future architectural design should act : PERFORMATIVE where “form follows the performance of buildings”, EXPRESSIVE, GENERATIVE, ADAPTIVE, and IMPRESSIVE. At this stage of design IV, instructors and students collaboratively worked together to integrate previous design terms into design studio where theme of the project was “OCCUPATION”. All students had to translate the definition of the terms into museum design. Design IV has just ended up in many architectural masterpieces. Herein, I would like to thank my colleague Ms.Usha and all the students for the great contribution and quality works they produced.

EMAD MUSHTAHA

PHILOSOPHY ON

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Architecture arises from and rests within the human being. At its most basic, its an expression of the subtle relationship between one's perception and the influence of the universal dialogue of Architecture - form vs function. The Architectural Design IV studio exercise, in collaboration with Dr Emad, for the design of a Museum to double as a solution for a theme based competition 'Occupation', proved an interesting academic venture. The students in groups, developed rational ideas and carefully sculpted the Museum forms based on a collage of forms and spaces resulting in a dynamic, futuristic and a meaningful place. The design encompasses the idea of occupation with extended landscape to incorporate more active recreation on the site. Thus new dynamics in human occupation were explored enhancing spatial relationships with a sense of order governed by design.

DESIGN BRIEF DESCRIPTION A Museum is the building or space in which collections of objects of historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural interest are stored and exhibited. It is devoted to the acquisition, conservation, study, exhibition and educational interpretation of these objects of value or significance. Museums collect and care for objects of importance and make them available for public viewing – through exhibits that may be part of the permanent collection or through temporary exhibits. The word Museum is derived from the Latin word ‘muses’, meaning ‘a source of inspiration’, or ‘to be absorbed in one’s thoughts.

OCCUPATION MANAGING TO OCCUPY SPACE WITH UNIQUE CONCEPTS // SHARJAH

THEME DESCRIPTION The keyword is OCCUPATION. Occupation of public realm or private property, legally or illegally, unintentionally or on purpose, temporarily or permanently, is happening all over the world. Militarily, politically or spatially, evaluation and definition of “occupation” are open to participants' imaginations. Students are to revisit the ideas of occupation and produce creative proposals under consideration of sustainable issues. While the term “sustainable” is subjected to many dimensions: environmental, economic and social, participants are free to interpret in their own ways. Spatial proposals with occupation statement and responsive design strategies are expected.

CONCEPT Dinosaur Skeleton : The concept started with the use of the skeleton of a dinosaur as the building structural system to dominate the function of the building from inside out, then It was developed and improved in a couple of stages to make it the best fit for our function as a museum.

GROUP 1

THEME Our story is to combine the spirit of the past with the futuristic present as people are always curious and interested to know about the era’s or the time that they never got to live or experience.

NATURAL SCIENCE To experience the life in the past

OCCUPATION What we are aiming for is to achieve both physical and mental occupation through activities to change the perceived idea of occupation by force which is the familiar meaning known by the people of this region. We applied the theme of Occupation by making the visitors go through different stations on the site giving them different feelings and experiences through different zones and spaces. We felt that a Natural History Museum is the best way to express this kind of occupation as the exhibitions showcased in the galleries take you through history and engrave the experience of past in your memory while the outdoor activities keep you entertained as we provide wide variety of activities such as an outdoor workshop, outdoor cafe and restaurant, shops , amphitheater and many other activities carried 24/7.

CONCEPT Multiple factors that effected the concept - The physical experiment that a person achieves by moving interactively through the uplifted floors and slabs to discover different aspects and angles of the building. - The spaces that interactive layers of the building create for the users with their diverse range of activity. - The invisible social diversity that independent functioning spaces bring to the museum and create a community.

GROUP 2

THEME

SCIENCE Bringing history of inventions from different periods and places to inspire the new generation to create a better future.

We wanted to create an interactive space that attracts different kinds of people and creates a diverse environment with different activities and spaces, being provided that they function separately but act as one unified museum that is publicly used 24/7 with the range of environments and occupations that it offers!

CONCEPT Canyons inspired our concept in the beginning. Although, we craved monumental and iconic structure, therefore alteration to mountain theme was achieved, yet still having the masculine, sharpness and dynamic theme applied. This has ensured the structure to not be over shadowed by the neighboring structures and will clearly be seen from the main streets in the area.

SITE : TA'AWUN

The availability of the three elements of the nature are clearly presented on the site ; Fire-Sun, Water-Beach and Air-Wind. However, one element is missing, which is the Earth. The Earth consisting of the main base of the nature, which is Rock/Sand. - WATER-

- EARTH -

GEOLOGY

To experience the life in the past To raise awareness of what we are missing from nature beauty.

H UMAN

OCCUPATION Combining the missing element – Rock (theme), with the 3 masses, the form is made to complete the full imageof the missing nature element OCCUPYING people’s minds and memory ( mental occupation. Image

- FIRE-

Human comfort is greatly significant. By the anaylsis of the factors around the site, human’s needs have to be satisfied to OCCUPY spaces for 24 hours.

How?

1

Research was done on three factors : Noise level, Sun direction and Age groups with respect to time. Spaces were designed accordingly thus OCCUPATION is achieved physically.

CONCEPT Our thoughts went to how the people in the UAE earned their living. Due to having a scarce amount of natural resources on land, the people turned to the sea. Eventually, ships inspired our concept, which were the main reason for the UAE’s evolution and growth. One of the concepts was inspired by the art of origami, while the other was more of an organic design. Combination of two concepts and a connection between the two different architectural schools, as connecting people with the old UAE.

GROUP 5 THEME

CULTURAL & HISTORICAL The museum features how the UAE grew, identifying how each emirate was individually and how it became when they united into one.

OCCUPATION

Throughout the fast development of the UAE, people ceased to remember the culture and heritage that this proud country was based on. Only a few are familiar with Sharjah’s strong history with building ships and fighting off the British naval forces. And even fewer know of the shapes and colors of the different flags that belonged to each emirate prior to the union. In this design, our group aims to take people through a story of time and change where the UAE grew from a humble barren land into the country that houses the world’s tallest tower.

We aimed to integrate our building with it’s surrounding as a public hub. We provided an outdoor Amphitheatre that people would be free to use all the time. We also provided an outdoor café which provided a gorgeous view and a place to work and conduct meetings of intellectuals. Finally we have the upper court which has a direct relationship to the Heritage area.
