Do you ever wonder you could've pursued a different career? If so, what would it be, and why?
I love what I do and have a true passion for public health. I couldn’t image being in any other field. There’s plenty of career choices that help society from a healthcare, economy, and whole-of-society standpoint. Public health is the intersection of all these fields as each of these core elements of daily life influence ones health.
What`s a personal achievement you're most proud of?
I’m most proud of completing my doctoral degree in health science with a concentration in global health while working full time during the entire duration of the schooling, and being pregnant and raising my first child during the tail end of my doctoral program. There were days I wanted to give up, but I plowed through and I couldn’t be more proud!
In your opinion, what`s the best part about being a doctor?
As a public health doctor, the best part is helping influence and develop programs that can enable people to live their healthiest life possible.

If you were to choose one key character trait, which one would you link the most to success, both spiritual and worldly?
Being kind. There will always be people you may not get along with, or projects you don’t like or issues that may seem like they’re insurmountable. But for me, being kind goes along way. It makes you feel better about yourself and it helps in your relationship building as we do live in a world where we all need to make connections with one another.
We all have a certain ‘core drive’ we devote our life to. What is yours?
Family is very important to me and is at the heart of my drive.
For most people, it`s hard to find the right work-life balance. What helps you cope with a busy day?
Having a support system that’s there to help. There are days when I have to devote over +12 hours to work and other days where it’s just 8 hours but having a family support system has been key for me to help balance my other duties in life with family and kids.
Would you like to share any advice for all the students out there who are excited to pursue a career in STEM?
Now, more than ever, we need more people to pursue careers in STEM. Every person has a role to play in society. The current pandemic has highlighted the dire need to invest more in STEM as tackling the most pressing threats and problems to humanity requires a multidisciplinary approach.

Do you ever wonder you could've pursued a different career? If so, what would it be, and why?
NO I do not regret doing what I do now. Today when I look back at my life I tell myself that I made the best decision of my life. I don’t think I was cut out to do anything else but research. I always wanted to do something that’s creative and requires thinking and developing original ideas which can be used to understand processes of life. I found my calling when I decided to do a Thesis for my Master’s degree. MS thesis in molecular biology was something that gave me direction, and later working at the Aga Khan University on molecular and immunological aspects of tuberculosis seriously sealed the deal and I told myself that this is EXACTLY what I would like to do for the rest of my life.
What`s a personal achievement you're most proud of?
I would have to say my PhD. The reason is that, the age I started my PhD, usually people are starting their families, getting married and settling in their lives. I decided to seize the opportunity and started my PhD, picked up the book and went back into learning mode which included waking up bright and early in the morning, taking lectures and giving exams.I received my PhD at the age of 39 but I am so proud of myself that I went through the entire training including highly stressful comprehensive exams, committee meetings and then finally never ending PhD research which required me to publish at least 2 original research articles to qualify for graduation. There were many days when I saw sunrise in my lab, but I will never trade those days for anything else in the world.
In your opinion, what`s the best part about being a proffessor?
Process of learning which never ends.

If you were to choose one key character trait, which one would you link the most to success, both spiritual and worldly?
Perseverance- You can find anything even God if you persevere without giving up.
We all have a certain ‘core drive’ we devote our life to. What is yours?
Family is very important to me and is at the heart of my drive.
We all have a certain ‘core drive’ we devote our life to. We`d like to know more about yours.
Curiosity- I want to know I am interested in exploring be it life, science or the world. My curiosity, keeps me going, gets me out of the bed in the morning and helps me get through my day. No matter how stressful my day is the search for that one last answer sweeps away the anxieties and stresses of the day and gives me new energy and new insight that helps me explore more. My curiosity also helps me explore life, and answers that I get never seize to amaze me.
Would you like to share any advice for all the students out there who are excited to pursue a career in STEM?
I don’t have advise, I have a few suggestions: First of all find your calling, know what you want in your heart, be honest to yourself, find yourself. Once you are done doing that, its easier to convince others of your decisions in life. Take life seriously, decide wisely and treat yourself every time you are successful. On work front, be honest with your results, regardless of what you do be honest with it, stay curious, keep asking questions and be very critical of your research, that’s the only way you will improve yourself. I would like to close with one of the most famous Henry Ford quotes “Obstacles are those frightful things that you see when you take your eyes off the goal”
