La Boqueria Romana objective Testaccio is the ideal region for the investigation of how diverse urban programming can begin to integrate into one another creating fields of social exchange. Educational facilities link up against international markets, housing adjoins lands dedicated to civic uses, and music and entertainment flow in and out of the river’s edge colliding between the thresholds of the Industrial provinces. Employing the strategy of hyper programming can create a vast field in which diverse public activities begin to frame and support the intervention of enhanced natural landscapes.

La Boqueria Romana “The surface is not merely the venue for formal experiments but the agent for evolving new forms of social life. Alex Wall

Taking broader connection points from one of the major thoroughfares such as Via Ostiense and allowing it to cut through the site to produce new pedestrian pathways that reach the river’s edge will mend the disconnect that exits from city to water front. Employing the use of hyperbolic curvature to define space that acts as enclosure, canopy and built topography will create a new active landscape in an otherwise uniform plane. Breaking the regularity of Rome’s urban fabric is not only long overdue, but now has become necessitated by the fact that the intervention of advanced architecture continues to be denied.

INFRASTRUTTURE ABITABILE

1732 THE CEMETERY FOR NON-CATHOLIC FOREIGNERS IN ROME HAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED... During 1834 Papal Rome established their first modern cemetery at Verano. However, in the year 1732 the cemetery for non-Catholic foreigners in Rome had to be constructed due to the growing need for burial grounds of Orthodox Christians, Jews, Muslims and other non-Christians. As a consequence of the laws of the Catholic Church, Protestants can be buried neither in Catholic churches nor in consecrated ground (www.protestantcemetery.it). Accordingly, the non-Catholic cemetery near Testaccio has come to be quite notable for its density of famous poets, painters, scholars and founding father of European Communism; Gramsci.

Through incorporating the Pyramid of Cestius as an anchor to the Aurelian wall, the cemetery has become a fortified site, strengthening the relationship to the urban context of modern day Rome. The cemetery lends itself to function on multiple levels of urbanity by acting as a dense micro city within the walls that flank the major thoroughfares. This is visible through analyzing the systems of circulation that exist on site. The off axis pedestrian pathway guides visitors through a series of grave districts that begin to function as micro communities all connecting at a central terminating point. The Aurelian pathway deploys itself as a major threshold that maintains the boundary of the cemetery (or county) while also remaining porous enough to act as inhabitable infrastructure.
