01 Rest [Room] : The Poetic Potential of Civic Amenities Undergraduate Thesis Project Architectural Design Studio VIII Instructor : Michael Hughes / Spring 2019
Rest [Room] proposes a fresh and sustainable approach to the design of public toilets, an underprovided and essential civic amenity, in the rapidly expanding city of Dubai. The existing public amenities in Dubai, constructed by the municipal authority between the 1970’s - 1990’s, are often labeled as “Public Water Networks” and foster a specific set of functions and gathering spaces along their periphery, which arise organically as a result of community behaviors. The most basic of these functions are informal seating spaces and drinking fountains (“Mai Sabeel” in Arabic), however, ablution spaces and vegetation are sometimes also found. These peripheral functions all become crucial in the design of Rest [Room] as it explores the idea of elevating the individual user experience from the prosaic to the poetic through the user’s interactions and experiences with water. Water has always been a precious element in the region and remains so today. Although the idea of proposing a network of water intensive projects in such an arid environment seems strange, it allows for an experiential and spatial dialogue with the user on water conservation and treatment systems and the use of these systems for drinking water and the irrigation of urban agriculture. Vegetation becomes a key aspect of the project, as it can foster a micro-climate, thereby creating a more comfortable outdoor space for users throughout the year. By exposing the pipes and machinery that these amenities thrive on, and allowing the Architecture to grow from them, the machine is united with that which it serves, the primarily organic, and simultaneously becomes the Architecture itself. Rest [Room] proposes a spatial and tactile experience that focuses the user’s attention on water in a way that allows them to understand its source, its vitality, their role in its consumption, and how it can be used to create a more poetic and comfortable experience of space. Situated on the AUS campus, the project was designed and developed with a focus on the unique requirements of the simultaneously transient and permanent community on campus. Serving as an example of how Rest [Room] could be implemented as a network of projects catering to different types of users across the city of Dubai, its tectonic nature allows it to adjust to suit the spatial and functional requirements of the communities it serves.

The Gallery project aimed to find solutions that present nuanced attitudes towards material, structure, enclosure and landscape into a coherent and integrated construct. The project asked for detailed tectonic solutions that would inspire the creative processes that would take place within its exhibition and work spaces, as well as attract visitors to engage in its public activities.
02 The Gallery
My approach to this project was to create a break in the rigidity and control of the site on which it was located. The grid of trees was broken by creating a moment of intensity within the field, that would attract visitors to the project, rather than allow it to blend in with its surroundings. The project consists of three shell units, of varying scales. This cluster formation allows for the seperation of public and private through its programmatic organization. Structurally, each unit in the cluster is formed by an assembly of modules, wherein each module is adjusted in form to match the spatial needs of the program they house. Each module is assembled on site, using pre-fabricated glass fibre reinforced concrete parts, allowing for efficient construction. The lines on the surfaces of the modules work together to define a line of enclosure that is offset from the edges of the shell, as well as form force lines within the structure. The interior contrasts to the light and slender form of the shells, by drawing the ground up into the project to create habitable spaces within the shells.

Early Study Models Material study models made in search of a language and system by which to design the shells. The models utilized concepts of surface pinching and stitching to create tectonic and structural lines, which then developed into a more pronounced form.
Exploded assembly diagram for the main Gallery unit. This unit consists of a typical unit with an additional four modules on the North-West side that allow the gallery to expand, but also alter the shell structure to allow for more light to enter the space where the offices are situated.

03 Work Pod for The Cloud Age
Design-Build Studio / Collaborative Project Architectural Design Studio VII Instructor : Ammar Kalo / Fall 2018 A’ Design Award 2019 / Architecture Masterprize 2020
The Design Build studio’s main concern was to design and fabricate a prototype of a Work Pod that is shaped by the work culture prevalent in today’s cloud-age for permanent placement and use within the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at AUS. Major design decisions were made in response to concerns relating to the existing work culture in CAAD, such as visual and acoustic privacy in open plan studios, and the college’s collaborative nature. The studio developed several generations of designs that were site specific to CAAD during the first three phases of the semester. The final design proposed aims to complement and enhance our CAAD environment. In addition to providing private workspace, the design functions as a module that can further service CAAD-AD1 through its exterior features. These features include additional pinup space, as well as exterior seating and standing workstations. Furthermore, the pod utilizes specific structural and sheathing strategies that allow for the functional flexibility of the interior space, in order to allow for distinct sister modules. The studio developed several generations of designs that were site specific to CAAD during the first three phases of the semester. Collaborating on a single pod design from its conception to its realization at full scale, the studio deployed various fabrication and materials techniques in CAAD Labs, as well as external industrial partners. Two pods were fabricated, Pod A and Pod B, to serve as examples of how multiple pods can occupy the space and the interactions and collaborative environment they can foster. Each pod has a unique color scheme, but are identical in function. My role in the project was to design the aluminum structure, as well as being involved in designing the overall pod and all of its metal elements and the fabrication and assembly of both pods. 04 Tarkeeb Gatehouse & Garden
Research & Fabrication Assistant
Situated in a context characterized by high temperatures and extreme humidity throughout the summer, the project relies on lessons from regional vernacular architecture to mitigate solar gain through passive cooling strategies. The Gate House and Garden replaced a one square-meter booth that was placed some distance from the entry gate, requiring security personnel to remain outside for the majority of their shift. The new installation incorporates an exterior parasol inspired by local mashrabiya to mitigate solar gain on the interior air-conditioned booth while simultaneously creating a pair of shaded exterior living spaces. Composed of steel bargrate the parasol shades an observation porch adjacent to the gate checkpoint on the north side while allowing for cross-ventilation and visual access. A second, larger, shaded garden space under the south portion of the bar grate exoskeleton provides respite and drinking water for the often under-appreciated members of the campus community, including the guards and landscape workers who toil long hours outside in difficult conditions. My role in the project was to assist in the production and fabrication of the interior wood panels, as well as research into fixtures for the interior. Fabrication processes I was involved in included, CNC routing meranti wood planks, laminating and assembling the planks to form the interior wall panels, as well as sanding and finishing. The final internal structure was assembled off site by a subsidiary of Dubai Metal Industries.

05 Khawaneej Music School
Comprehensive Studio Architectural Design Studio VI Instructor : George Newlands / Spring 2018 Collaboration with : Jawaher AlMutairi
The proposed Khawaneej Music School is situated within a low urban fabric consisting of high end private residences and in maintenance of that, a datum is set. The project is comprised of two “bars”, graduating from light to dark as the user enters and progresses through the public to the private sections of the project. The entry “bar” is more of an indoor plaza and is housed within a channel glass facade with a high ceiling comprised of a Holedeck waffle slab system, which allows for skylights throughout the space. The main vertical circulation lies within this bar in the form of a grand ramp constructed of white concrete and GFRC panels. Circulation spaces within the project are maintained with a white concrete finish and diffused lighting, while classroom, study and office spaces are maintained as visually subtractive spaces in a heavy travertine volume. Two floating performance spaces are linked to the ramp and protrude into the center of the plaza space and can be viewed from the ground level, as well as along the ramp itself. In addition to this, there are opportunities along the ramp, as well as at the ground level, for informal performances to occur, thereby transforming the entire entry zone into an open performance space. As the user progresses further into the project, they enter the second “bar” which, in contrast to the entry, is heavy and monolithic, in celebration of the vernacular construction methods of the United Arab Emirates. This zone of the project houses the classrooms, library, offices, multipurpose rooms and auditorium. The walls within this zone are double waive cast-in-place concrete walls with travertine panelling. This allows for acoustic dampening and an air of privacy within this zone of the project. As the project was a comprehensive one, we were required to submit a full set of construction documents as would be required of us in professional practice. This gave us hands-on insight and experience in the drafting of technical and detail drawings through three phases of architectural design, which were Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents.

Molten draws inspiration from the various stages a metal passes through as it is melted and formed into a delicate piece of jewelry by traditional artisans. As such, each piece in the collection is formed as a piece of wearable sculpture, emulating the different physical characteristics of metal in its liquid state, such as ripples, surface tension and pressure deformations.

Striving to push the boundaries of form-making in contemporary jewelry design, an iterative design process involving a fusion of digital design, cutting edge resin 3D-printing and traditional artisanal handcrafts is used to create sculptural fine jewelry pieces that are versatile and perfect for everyday wear. From concept to realization, each item is created with meticulous attention to detail and the intention of encouraging sustainable fashion over fast fashion. Keeping in line with the ethos of promoting sustainable fashion and ethical manufacturing, all of the jewelry is crafted from 18k solid gold and sterling silver, both of which hold their value with time and are easy to recycle, ensuring a lower environmental impact than newly mined metals. Molten was exhibited as part of the UAE Designer Exhibition at Dubai Design Week 2020, as well as an adapted version of the exhibition at the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai. Molten will also be featured as part of the 2021 series of Instagram takeovers and annual catalog for Fikra Design Studio, under their theme of Time.

The Molten Collection
Design Approach Celebrating the ephemeral characteristics of metal in its liquid state, which we never get to experience as consumers and that artisans only get to witness for fleeting moments whilst working with the metal, the Molten Collection emulates the various formal expressions the material exhibits as it is being formed into a piece of jewelry. These ephemeral characteristics are frozen in time as pieces of sculpture that are detailed, but still dainty enough to be worn for any occasion and even as staple everyday pieces.

Fabrication Process Each jewelry piece passes through a process of testing and iteration between digital modelling and 3D printed prototyping to perfect the design, proportions and fit on the human body. Following this process, the pieces are 3D printed in a specific resin-wax material using a cutting edge industrial printer. The final cured resin 3D print is used to create a plaster cast by a method similar to the traditional lost-wax casting method. Molten metal is then poured into this plaster cast to create the final piece. Once cooled and removed from the plaster, each piece is manually polished and finished by expert artisans before being used to create silicone rubber molds, which allow for future mass-production.

Ammophilous Constructs (Ammophilous roughly translates to “to strive/be happy in sand” in Greek) is a research-based material development project that explores the relationship between Architecture and Biology and their potential integration through the use of organic binding systems for the development of a sand-based constrcution material.

Tanween Design Programme 2021 Design x Science Edition By Tashkeel Future Exhibition : Dubai Design Week 2021
Operating under the ethos of encouraging “growing” materials rather than mining, quarrying and depleting natural resources that change our landscapes and have significant impact on the climate and ecology on both global and local scales, Ammophilous Constructs begins to investigate the possibilities of artificially inducing calcification/bonds between the grains of loose desert sand to create sandstone, thereby reducing, if not eventually eradicating, the need for natural stone quarrying. Through rigorous material studies, Ammophilous Constructs is an inquiry into the possibility of creating an organic, low-cost building material that can be utilized for construction in remote locations with the potential of reducing the need for conventional materials, their subsequent construction costs and transportation requirements. By attempting to create complex spatial forms with the material, I hope to establish a set of paramters by which it may be used for fabrication at the product and architecture scales. By studying the architectural applications of this material, a dialogue into the possibilities of how the natural growth of the artificial sandstone can be utilized to form complex spaces in natural desert environments may begin to take hold. Locations thought to be uninhabitable could become suitable to cultivate life. Landscapes that have been ravaged by weather can be preserved or grown back to become habitable space. Ammophilous Constructs is an ongoing research-based material development project that ties into my work for the 2021 Tanween Design Programme. Due to the confidential nature of the research, I am unable to include specifics in an online portfolio, but would be happy to share more in person.

09 Baleelah
Baleelah is a project that examines the ecological ironies of our daily lives in the UAE and celebrates the playfulness of water in times of its scarcity, while taking on the basic function of a drinking fountain. Considering its arid climate, the UAE relies heavily on desalination to supply water to its residents and numerous development projects. Despite the great efforts to supply water generously, the country is constantly threatened by the temporary nature of this technology and its negative impact on the existing environment. Baleelah represents the tension between the aridity of land and the intensity of water supply networks. It voices a concern about how water supply networks strip our landscape bare of its livelihood and moisture; this is represented by deep cracks that emerge as the reclaimed copper pipes meet the ground. Moreover, Baleelah aims to create an inviting microclimate using its mist pipes, which provide a sense of enclosure and reduce the temperature of its immediate surroundings. As the mist rises to meet the copper discs placed around the project, it condenses and returns to the earth, providing a nurturing environment for wild plants to thrive within, as well as simultaneously providing the user with an immersive experience of the physical and auditory characteristics of water. Essentially, Baleelah represents the potential for creating sustainable and selfsufficient environments that are both efficient and experientially poetic. Baleelah is currently a work-in-progress.

Over a period of eight weeks, my work involved assisting with digital explorations of the structural applications of circular steel pipes for use in a private residential project. The ideas generated were driven by the specific research being conducted by the faculty member I was assisting. In the process, various compositional studies and aggregations of the pipes were modelled digitally and some of these ideas of structural integrity were then tested physically through resin 3D printing.
