natural context

the context is mainly characterized by a flat and dry area. during the wet season a green territory can be seen as well. il contesto naturale è principalmente caratterizzato da un territorio piatto e arido. nella stagione umida è possibile notare come il territorio acquisti una colorazione verde.

architectural context traditional architecture is mainly built with local stone which is not covered with other material in the landmark buildings in most cases; sometimes these buildings are covered with “azulejos”. normal buildings are in most cases finished with colorful plaster gli edifici principali sono costruiti in pietra che generalmente non presenta alcun rivestimento; il rivestimento che raramente ricopre questo tipo di edifici è caratterizzato da ceramiche denominate “azulejos”. l’edilizia normale presenta una finitura di intonaco fortemente colorato.

Le piante e pareti verdi hanno il ruolo di costituire lo sfondo di tutte le attività che si svolgono nella e attorno la corte, nonchè di tutti gli elementi architettonici che maggiormante caratterizzano le haciendas. portico portico

water acqua Once entered the hacienda, water is an element that is easily revealed to the person. Fountains, small pools, and various water games are features which characterize this kind of building. Una volta varcato l’ingresso dell’hacienca, l’acqua è un elemento che facilmente si riscontra all’interno dell’edificio. Fontane, piccole piscine e diversi giochi d’acqua costituiscono carattere fondamentale di questo tipo di costruzione.

Porticos are fundamental features in the hacienda architecture. They shape an external area which has interesting characteristics. It is an external zone that can embody both dinamic (as corridor or hall) and static (as dining room or waiting areas) activities at the same time. Additionally, it provides the coutyard with a shaded area that is useful for the formation of a pleasant flow of air during the hot season. Il portico è elemento fondamentale dell’architettura dell’hacienda: Ha la peculiarità di definire uno spazio aperto con delle interessanti caratteristiche funzionali, in quanto consente di svolgere sia attività di passaggio che statiche, e bioclimatiche, in quanto con la creazione di zone d’ombra favorise il formarsi di correnti d’aria necessaria a raffrescare gli ambienti durante la stagione calda.

Obstruction to the Existing Road 2 The urban landscape is characterized by porticos, which are placed side by side to the main streets of the ancient center of the town. The public spaces are defined by rectangular floor plants which are the result of the enlargement and

later contraction of the public paths. The building density gradually decreases when getting farther from the center. In fact, getting closer to the park (PASM) it can be noted how the building type

(small houses for one or two families) differs from the one that characterizes the central urban zone. Within the park, instead, the only built elements are just those that are necessary for an agricultural activity.

The reduction of the amount of kilometers that a person has to pass through every day is the main objective of an ecological urban plan. The pedestrian should have the chance to access each of the everyday urban function in at least 10 minutes by walk, 4 min 207 without using the mechanical transportation. With this intention, an urban neighborhood must have its dimensions limited to about 1 km in each direction. Moreover, a suitable neighborhood has to be characterized by a hierarchy of roads and squares: each neighborhood has at least one main square and a main street.  The main and symbolic buildings have to be located in favored sites of the city and of the landscape: on a square, convergence point of urban perspectives, etc. Some urban details seem to be meaningless, although, they can be crucial for the transformation a trivial street into a quality path: a symbolic building placed at the end of an urban straight path can provide a target to the user, so they can have an objective without having the sensation of a going to a void. Moreover, a straight path doesn’t elicit any kind of curiosity or interest in the pedestrian. This can be avoided with a street that has plan changes.

  Public spaces belong to pedestrian and not to vehicles The pedestrian paths have to intersect each others in order to create a coherent and vehicle-free web. Furthermore, the main square has to be reserved to the pedestrian.

In order to reduce the harmful emissions, and to gain a higher environmental sustainable process, the building is characterized with several features. The first of them is the local microclimate control system, which is formed by a composition of opening wooden panels that are manually activated by the building users. These panels ensure the solar radiation filtering during the hottest seasons, avoiding the interior zones overheating and the consequent reduction of the air-conditioning demand. Another feature is the greenhouse system that is positioned on the southern side of the building. With their system of transmission, absorption and cession of the solar energy they heat the inner environment during the cooler seasons. Finally, a system that works in a similar way to the greenhouse has been adopted, the Trombe Wall.



Besides the urban plan, this work focuses the attention on the definition of a Science Center, (which has the intention of bettering the agricultural and alimentary system) because of its ability of being a push for a territory growth and that will be located on the main square of the new neighborhood. Furthermore, in order to attain the economic sustainability, a strategy has been considered during the study phase: the accordance that the Science Center could acquire with the CNR, that with its knowledge of the technical and scientific field, and business know-how, would support the new enterprise during all the phases.

Thesis objective: The main objective of the work consists in giving an example of how a well-designed object has the ability of qualifying the social, environmental and urban contest where it is proposed.
