Introduction CREATING BONDS TO BOOST GLOBAL FOOD TRADE By 2050, the world’s population will reach 9 billion people, who will require access to and availability of food at least three times a day. In addition, a growing middle class of people lifted out of poverty is claiming for more food, as is currently happening in China. We are not talking about any type of food, global food consumption trends are moving towards healthy agricultural products, with greater nutritional value, thereby contributing to the vitality and beauty of the human being. The answer to this growing demand comes from the land: agricultural activity will become the engine of economic growth of the world. Countries developing their agricultural export potential will become key players for the survival of millions of people on the planet. Currently, Peru is one of the top 10 food suppliers in the world; indeed, in the last fifteen years, Peru has developed a sustained and high-quality commercial agricultural offer of fruits and vegetables. For example, the country ranks among the top 5 suppliers in the world of staple products, like asparagus, grapes, artichokes, avocados, and others. In this scenario, Preciso, a contents agency for print and digital media established in 2010, has set up a business unit specialized in developing commercial intelligence information for agricultural exports under the name of Fresh Fruit Peru. As a first step, Preciso released the 2017 Fresh Fruit Report showing export figures for the main fruits and vegetables exported from Peru during 2016. This document includes useful information organized and laid out in a dynamic and creative way, making it easy to understand. This publication includes datasheets for each company exporting any of the 15 agricultural products selected for this edition: grapes, blueberries, avocados, pomegranates, mangoes, tangerines, tangelos, passion fruits, goldenberries, bananas, plantains, asparagus,

artichokes, paprika, and piquillos. Quinoa was also included in this edition as an Andean grain considered among the “superfoods” and one of the fastest-growing highly nutritious products in the world. The fruits and vegetables selected are consistent with their level of consolidation and/or potential in the world market. The more than 120 companies listed are among the main exporters of each agricultural product considered in this edition. Before going into details, the reader may find information, data, and economic figures about Peru, a reliable country for doing business. Also discussed are the advantages and characteristics of the agricultural export products of Peru; a country with unique climate and geographical location making it an important agricultural nation where staple food is harvested at a trade window that starts once the harvest in the northern hemisphere finishes and ends when it begins. The purpose of this publication is to be a tool for disseminating Peru’s exports among the main buyers of the world, especially, in Asia and the Middle East. This document will be delivered directly to the world’s biggest and most influential food traders, wholesalers, and supermarkets. In partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, each of the 140 Peruvian embassies in the world will have a copy of this publication available for consultation by buyers interested in the basket of Peruvian export products. We hope this 2017 Fresh Fruit Report will help create reliable bonds between international buyers and Peruvian fruits and vegetables suppliers. Fresh Fruit Peru offers this first contribution to further encourage better flow of food trade in the world. This is the first edition of many others that will be published each year, as well as other newspaper articles and trade intelligence projects, highlighting Peru’s significant contribution to the human food supply.

Peru is strategically located on the Pacific Rim of South America, and has extensive ties to the Asia-Pacific. It is an extremely biodiverse and multiethnic country. Over the past decade, Peru has been one of the fastest-growing economies, with an average growth rate of 6% and low inflation (averaging 2.9%). Open markets, a liberalized economy and an attractive legal framework for private investment have made Peru an important trade hub in South America. Today, Peru has a wide network of Free Trade Agreements that provide opportunities for its exports, especially its rich and diverse offer of agricultural products. However, more work needs to be done to promote its more than 180 native domesticated plant species and their hundreds of varieties. Peru is one of the most important centers for crop diversity and domestication in the world. This diversity has an importance that extends far beyond Peru´s borders, as agricultural biodiversity is the basis for human survival and wellbeing. Safeguarding it is a crucial step for guaranteeing future food security for humanity.

While the benefits of agricultural biodiversity are increasingly recognized worldwide, their full value is often not reflected in the final price paid to producers. Mechanisms that help farmers capture the real value of these resources include the development of value chains and of niche market products, drawing on different species and varieties. For example, what do quinoa, artichoke and grapes have in common? They are part of an array agricultural products that are

being promoted under the same brand name: “Superfoods of Peru”. In February 2017, the Peruvian Minister of Trade and Tourism announced that Peruvian food products would begin to be marketed abroad using the brand name “Superfoods of Peru,” in order to spur even larger growth in Peru’s agribusiness sector. The brand “Superfoods of Peru” was launched taking into account the new trends in customers’ growing concerns about a healthy life style. In this regard, we seek to position Peruvian foods that have important nutritional value in markets abroad. The Fresh Fruit Report is an important addition to the tools at the disposal of both the public and private sectors to help promote and educate the world about Peru’s rich and varied products. It is thus my pleasure to be able to introduce this new and comprehensive guide of some of the most relevant agricultural exports of Peru to the business community. The report contains detailed information about some of the main Peruvian agricultural exporters, as well as the products they offer and the time of the year when these are available. The Fresh Fruit Report will be an essential tool for buyers around the world, allowing them to understand the products they are importing and distributing. It will also allow them to contact the appropriate producers and/or sellers of specific agricultural products. CURRENT STATUS OF AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

Peruvian Agriculture: A Promising Future With great success, the agricultural industry took root along the Peruvian desert coast and, in a short time, positioned itself among the top fruits and vegetables suppliers of the world. At present, 9 of Peru’s agricultural products rank among the top 10 world exports, with a view to continuing to climb positions in the next four or five years.

Since the first asparagus were shipped to the US more than a decade ago, the increase in volumes of exported agricultural products has been constant while increasing the diversity of its agricultural export offer (new varieties of crops are added each year). Shipments non-traditional agricultural products to the world reached US$4,653 million in 2016, but the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) forecasts that exports could exceed US$10 billion by 2021, due to recent investments in the field and to greater global demand, driven by population growth. In the 2010-2016 period, the total annual growth rate of agricultural production was 2.7%, but non-traditional (more modern and exporting) agriculture hit surprising rates of 12% per year. This dynamism has generated economic momentum in the cities of Peru where such export crops are grown. At least 433 thousand quality jobs in 2004 increased to 822 thousand in 2014, according to Apoyo Consultoría. The expectation is that global acceptance of the Peruvian offer will continue in line with the growing demand for healthy and nutritious foods.

A Multicolored Basket of Fruits and Vegetables

At present, grape is Peru’s primary export crop, whose FOB value exceeded US$600 million at the end of 2016. Its growth is still expected to increase with new farming areas. Next in line are avocado with US$447 million and fresh asparagus with US$405 million, blueberries with US$239 million, fresh mangoes with US$193 million, raw cacao beans with US$183 million, plantain with US$151 million, quinoa with US$102 million, among others.

Agro-exporters’ intention is to continue researching and betting on new crops, as was the case with blueberries -a crop that has become one of Peru’s top export products in just a few years. In addition, experiments are conducted with raspberries and blackberries, cherries, pits, and lulo. In the case of more consolidated crops, Peru seek to develop new varieties (seedless, new colors or shapes), based on the requirements of the destination markets.

The agricultural supply is made up of fruits and vegetables of different colors representing Peru’s wealth of genetic diversity. The different shades of green of avocados, asparagus or artichokes; the shades of purple of grapes or blueberries; the shades of orange of tangerines, tangelos, and oranges; or the shades of red with a varied selection of capsicum, are consistent with the current eating habits privileging healthy lifestyles in harmony with the Earth. In this vein, Peru launched its new “Superfoods Peru” brand in February, seeking to disseminate the nutritional properties of its agricultural produce. In addition to the already known blueberries, asparagus, pomegranates, avocados, Peru will seek to promote crops such as quinoa, kiwicha, sacha inchi, purple corn, camu, lucuma, cherimoya, tangerines, among others.

PERU’S CLIMATE ADVANTAGES Its multiple types of climates and its highly productive lands are the main reasons why Peru is traditionally an agricultural country, with staple food and exportable agricultural products. Featuring 84 of the world’s 177 ecosystems, 11 natural eco-regions, and 28 of the world’s 32 climates, Peru currently offers a variety of products that can be exported throughout the year. Counter-Season to the Northern Hemisphere The main agricultural crops are exported in counter-season to the northern hemisphere. For example, asparagus are shipped to the European and US markets in the summer and fall months, when production in those countries has declined. The Chinese New Year is a great commercial opportunity for Peruvian producers to ship table grapes (especially, the red globe) to that Asian market. In the last three years, another commercial opportunity has been conquered by Peruvian suppliers: blueberries are exported between September and November, when production in North America falls.

Reaching 150 Markets in the World The countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assertive trade openness through the signing of different Free Trade Agreements and other agreements has taken agricultural products over 150 markets around the world. However, shipments are still concentrated in a small group of countries: the main destination markets for 2016 were the United States, which accounted for 32 % of total exports, the

Netherlands with 14 %, Spain 6 %, Germany 5 %, England 5 %, Ecuador 4 %, Colombia 3 %, Belgium 3 % and Canada 2 %. However, exporters are making relentless efforts to arrive with their agricultural offer to new markets. Between 2010 and 2016, 25 new destination countries were added, with the countries of Asia and the Middle East showing greatest interest.

Agricultural Frontier Expansion Continues Peru has taken advantage of its coastal desert lands to grow grapes, asparagus, avocados or artichokes. The total area engaged in modern agriculture is 161,000 hectares, of which more than half are in Ica, Piura, and La Libertad, according to the IV National Census of Agriculture in 2012; accounting for only 4 % of the total agricultural area of the country. To expand the agricultural area, the Peruvian Government has promoted the construction of irrigation infrastructure in the valleys along the Peruvian coast. With the implementation of imminent irrigation megaprojects in the Peruvian coast, arable land for export crops are expected to increase to 350,000 hectares by 2021.

Sanitary Protocols Will Open Up ‘My Markets’ While a large number of agricultural products are eligible for preferential tariff at the ports of destinations, Peru still does not fully benefit from such trade agreements because phyto-sanitary protocols with different countries still need to be finalized. “Healthy food and clean energy is our offer to the world” The story of Agrícola Cerro Prieto started 18 years ago in the wastelands between Jequetepeque and Zaña valleys in Lambayeque. “The Jequetepeque valley has a spectacular access to water resource from Gallito Ciego dam that can be managed by people rather than nature” comments in this interview Alfonso Bustamante Canny, chairman of Agrícola Cerro Prieto, to explain the reasons why the group decided to settle in this coastal zone. Towards 2020, the firm projects to have 3,200 hectares of avocado, asparagus, cranberries and grapes.

The state-of-the-art integrated irrigation system that uses gravity pressurization instead of electrical or fossil fuel water pumping has made possible for Agrícola Cerro Prieto to have almost 2,000 hectares planted with grapes, avocado, asparagus and cranberries. “The business group began in the electrical field, but we settled market positions in energy companies. With the gravity irrigation system, we stopped consuming around 20 megawatts of electricity and reduced our carbon footprint, which really appreciated by our customers. Clean energy and healthy foods is the focus of the group”, says Bustmante.

Besides from making their own irrigation system, the group had to consolidate water rights, evict land invaders, and develop the respective agronomic tests to determine their own agricultural export offer. On a preliminary stage, they only sowed cotton, pima cotton and sugar. After 2012 came the first 500 hectares of avocado, followed by grapes, asparagus and cranberries. It has been a long road that leads to a steady growth. With the participation of an investment fund from U.S.A. (Municipal Employees Retirement System of Michigan) as a minor shareholder, Agrícola Cerro Prieto has the whole financing that requires for its plan towards 2020. The company has 100% funding for its investment plan. What are the next steps you’ll take towards 2020? We were US$120 million short for investment and we made a capital increase of US$40 million through the investment fund. The rest was managed because the company has positive and almost unlevered flows. Thus, we can withstand this project that will end with 1,500 hectares of avocado, 400 hectares of cranberries, 250 hectares of grapes and approximately 1,000 hectares of asparagus. With these crops, all our water rights will be fulfilled.

What’s the importance of ID for the company? Before entering in the avocado business, a 5 year research was held with different species and patterns, as well as with different watering types and densities among plants. The grape, for instance, took 7 years and still counting. For asparagus, 5 years. On the other hand, it was short for cranberries because we made a strategic alliance with a Chilean company. And it’s our second year testing raspberry. We’re also

testing different types of tangerine in 8 hectares because, supposedly, it doesn’t meet the required specs in the northern zone, where we are. We’re going to find out if it’s true or not. Does your location help with advantageous trade windows? It does for avocado at the beginning of the season (from March to May) while the main season for avocado in Peru takes place during June and July. At the end of the season (between August and September), it’s also good, but we don’t participate. That’s why we’re interested to own lands in southern latitudes to participate in the export during those months. We have high hopes to participate in the lands of the Majes Siguas II irrigation project (Arequipa). Overall, what are the advantages of Peruvian agro-export? Peru has a dry tropic that lacks of rain. The Peruvian coast grants more testing facilities than we thought. This is the case of cranberries, which was supposedly to grow only in cold regions. Now we’re covering distribution in the international market where others don’t produce. We still have a considerable scope if we accomplish the task of diversifying our offer.

Does this mean that you can’t grow in hectares? We still can extend our plantation with well water. If water resource weren’t available, the company is evaluating land purchase in other areas of the country. Other way can be to create alliances with third party producers? Our processing plants –overall we have three: avocado, asparagus and cranberries- can be advantageous for the Jequetepeque valley neighbors, who nowadays cultivate rice in the area. Part of our plan in to convince these producers to be part of our export chain, due to the great processing capacity we have now.

Peruvians want ready-to-eat Hass avocado all year Camet Trading is preparing to introduce in the local market two presentations of a ready-to-eat Hass avocado of premium export quality through a supermarket chain

What is 'ready-to-eat' or R2E technology? The 'ready-to-eat' trend is centered on maturation technology. The avocado is introduced into a chamber specially prepared to control temperature, humidity, ethylene and other factors. The maturation process lasts between two and four days, and the result is a product of standardized quality, with homogeneous taste and texture. Standardizing quality during the 12 months of the year is of the utmost importance for us, and for our clients. For this reason, we have sent our staff to train in Westfalia Fruit companies in Holland and France, and we have brought experts to visit our facilities to fine tune the details. What are the strengths of Camet Trading to bet on this business? Camet Trading is part of Westfalia Fruit, a multinational giant with presence in more than 14 countries that specializes in producing, processing and marketing fresh subtropical fruits during the 12 months of the year. Westfalia Fruit companies have been applying 'ready-to-eat' technology in their respective markets for several years with very positive results. It is with this support and experience that Camet Trading decided to bet on marketing in Peru 'ready-to-eat' Hass avocado of premium export quality all year long. Why bet on Hass export rather than Fuerte? Avocado is a fruit with extraordinary nutritional benefits: it is good for the heart; it helps to regulate cholesterol; it is rich in

fiber and it contains more potassium than bananas. The Hass variety is recognized worldwide as a premium avocado of excellent quality. It contains a higher percentage of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats than the Fuerte. In addition, it has a longer post-harvest life time, so it is less prone to rot in the peduncle area and it is more resistant to manipulation. Will national and imported Hass avocado be used? Camet Trading has a presence in 14 regions of Peru and we can self-supply from February to September. From October to January, we will import. We plan to do this from Chile with companies that are part of the group or those with which we have strategic alliances. What is the strategy to bring Hass avocado into Peruvianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearts? Camet Trading is carrying out a communication campaign accompanying the entrance of our product in CENCOSUD's stores. Our campaign is based on informing consumers at the stores about the benefits of including one Hass avocado in their daily diet. For this, our own promoters will interact at the store with the public. What does Camet Trading expect to achieve this and next year? We hope to get a positive response from the local consumer. We believe that Peruvians want to find a high-quality, well priced ready-to-eat Hass avocado all year round. We will start this year with presence in three stores with two presentations: the Hass in bulk, weighting between 300 and 450 grams; and the Baby Hass, weighting between 120 and 160 grams, in a five-pack. We expect to market at CENCOSUD's sixteen Wong stores by the end of 2017. By 2018, we expect to continue to introduce new product presentations and expand our presence at points of sale across the country.
