ART

1- BURJ KhALIFA Dubai, United Arab Emirates Skidmore, Owings & merrill, 2010

2- LINKED hyBRID

Beijing Steven Holl Architects, 2009 Composed of eight connected towers, this mixed-use complex represents a compelling vision for 21st-century urban development. To combat the isolation often associated with luxury residential buildings and gated communities, the architects placed wide, open passages at ground level, ushering pedestrians into a series of public spaces that include gardens, shops, restaurants, and schools. High overhead, glass-and-steel bridges also contain retail spaces and a café, providing another sphere for community-fostering encounters between visitors and neighbors.

3- PEROT MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE Dallas morphosis Architects, 2012

Architect Thom mayne, the Pritzker Prize–winning founder of morphosis, is famous for breaking the mold, and his latest building is no exception. Sheathed in panels of textured concrete, it consists of a five-story cube, fractured at one corner and set atop a sweeping plinth planted with Texas grasses. Slashed across the cube’s exterior is a dramatic glass-enclosed escalator, which whisks visitors to the top-floor entrance to the exhibits.

EmBRACE 47

Rising a dizzying 2,717 feet above the desert, this spectacular supertower reigns as the tallest structure in the world. Its 162 floors contain offices, residences, restaurants, an Armani hotel, and an observation deck, 124 stories up. The strength of its design stems not only from its awe-inspiring verticality but also from its sleek silhouette. Wrapped in a glass curtain wall with steel mullions that catch the Arabian sun, the building tapers gradually from its Y-shaped base, with setbacks culminating in a 700-foot spire.

4- METROPOL PARASOL

Seville, Spain J. Mayer H. Architects, 2011 When excavation for a parking garage unearthed Roman artifacts in Seville’s Plaza de la Encarnación, city officials opted to commission this welcoming landmark instead. Metro / Some 90 feet high and nearly 500 feet long, the billowing timber pavilion is part pergola, part urban parlor. Viewing platforms are perched atop the organic forms, which also shelter restaurants and an archaeological museum.

5- ABSOLUTE WORLD Mississauga, Ontario MAD Architects, 2012

embrace 48

These residential high-rises strike a voluptuous profile in Toronto’s largest suburb. With continuous balconies and elliptical floor plans, the 50- and 56-story skyscrapers appear to shimmy and twist, each around its own axis. Such creative formmaking is the focus of the young Beijing firm, whose design was executed in coordination with Burka Architects. Founded by Yansong Ma in 2004, MAD has earned a reputation for innovative edifices such as Inner Mongolia’sOrdos Museum. Like that project, the Absolute towers offer a refreshing take on a familiar building type.

6- Chicago Spire

Chicago, USA 2010 Santiago Calatrava The phenomenal chicago spire, when completed in 2010, will be the world’s tallest residential building and the tallest building of any kind in the western world. Seemingly modelled on the image of a giant drill poking through the ground, the 609m structure will dominate the chicago skyline.

7- The CCTV Headquarters

Beijing, China Architects: Rem Koolhaas, Ole Scheeren At a modest 234m the cctv building isn’t going to stand out from a distance. However the design and shape is a crowdstopper to say the least and will be another incredible addition to beijing’s skyline in time for the 2008 olympics. The shape, described as a ‘z criss-cross’ results in a very high, seemingly unsupported corner at the front. Let’s hope there’s a glass floor up there.

8- regatta hotel Jakarta, Indonesia

Architect atelier Enam Taking on a nautical theme, the developers say the 10 smaller towers represent sailing boats whilst the larger building is ‘the lighthouse’. It’s the lighthouse that steals the show for me, possibly the most incredible looking structure i’ve seen for a long time. If it ends up looking anything close to these pictures i’ll be impressed.

Mumbay, India Architect Perkins & Will

Construction has begun on residence antilia despite opposition from those who see it as an ‘excessive’ design in a city where more than 65% of the population live in slums. Politics aside and after you recover from the initial shock of seeing a skyscraper that resembles an ikea cd rack, the building actually looks like it may succeed as a stunning, unique, green piece of architecture.

10- penang global city centre Penang, Malaysia Architect Asymptote Architecture

Following months of speculation and sturdy opposition, this humungous project is in the final stages of approval and apparently construction will start very soon. Even so, due to the size of the plan it will take at least 15 years to complete. resembling a sci-fi city, the area will be crowned by 2 x 200m towers and completely transform the small island of Penang.

Camargo By Creative Director Tshombe Crumley

“ I’m not afraid to show other artists how I do what I do. I like to inspire others to create so I am not afraid to show my process.” Freddy Camargo, an admirer of Picasso and Van Gough. Abstract, Expressive, Free, Adaptable, Diligent and Self- Taught are words to encompass the guy who enjoys cooking, working and creating art. “Every day I try to accelerate myself and try something new” “Society plays a role with art because it drives the critics and artists to a dual of opinion” Camargo is a modern artist who specializes in commercial art, photography, painting, drafting and illustration. He especially admires the people who don’t like his work for opinion and opposition can be seen as negative but in the art world can inspire one to do more or create more of that opinion and opposition. We surfaced the subject of is Fashion Art? Freddy rebounded with…. “Behind the fashion is art. Fashion is a word and a trend. The people who create the art are artists. So I guess the collaboration of all of this makes fashion art.” Future plans for Camargo include shooting editorials for other magazine brands as well as creating his own voice. VOI – an extreme splash of art, fashion and culture focused publication slated to debut in Summer of 2014. Can’t wait to see Camargo.

Alice

Zilberberg Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind By Fashion Editor Braxton Lee II “The movie that reflects my life is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Really surreal. Non -chronological. Reflects my super crazy fantasy concept that I would want to happen in real life” The digital nature series created by Alice Zilberberg is described as digital art mixed with photography, image compositing and digital painting. Alice Zilberberg is a photographer and visual artist born Estonia, grew up in Israel and currently lives in Toronto, Canada who enjoys teaching photo-shop, taking yoga and spinning classes and of course sleeping. What makes her art different is that she takes something from the real world and put it into a medium that is a fantasy and showcase it in reality. Inspired by folklore, mythology and fairy tales the work of Zilberberg explores the themes of femininity and the environment. Blending women with nature is a major influence that helped to create the environmental ad campaign to promote environmental awareness of how we should treat nature and take care of ourselves. She extracts the essence of female power, taking goddesses back to their origins, removing outdated notions of a weaker sex, questioning our values, the treatment of the natural environment and the state of the earth. The characters in her works are women that are powerful, capable, alluring and defeating. What’s up next for you? “I want to create work that is controversial, more out there and questionable. I would describe it as more modern pop surrealism. Much different that my nature series. I can’t say much. We’ll just see what I have in store.”

Bridal makeup and hair in every part of the world is pretty stunning, but for sheer creativity when it comes to makeup and use of color, Kosovar brides from the town of Donje Ljubinje take the cake. Their elaborate maquillage, which includes white face paint, sequins, and tons of gorgeous patterns, is designed to ward off bad luck, but it’s also a work of art. The tradition is unique to this area and goes back as far as the town’s earliest recorded history, making it truly an amazing cultural artifact. I came to this idea, after visiting Kosovo this summer for 4 weeks and got into the cultural traditions and art. Through my works with Matthu Placek this spring, I got inspired to create a fashion shoot with this make up and hair tradition. Matthu Placek recently used this concept for a recent shoot with the New York based artist Marina Abramovic for one of her future projects. Mark Jordy Gonzales @ Illamasqua, Toronto was working on the intensive make up and hair styling for about 4 hours. I decided to combine current fashion with traditional bridal make up. The contrast makes the picture speak its own story. Also I used transparent complementary colored plates to emphasize the contrast of tradition and the modern. - Alban Smajli

POWER

PL AY By Rhianna Helfman

embrace 93

Junkies are breeding, bent on acquiring and displaying materialistic power. This addiction is a widespread goal often viewed as success. We rely on an external consumer power, like the fiends we are, to fill the gaps in our egos with inappropriate notions of self worth. Beauty is commodified as sex and sex is power, just like guns and money. The problem is that consumer power doesn’t come from within you, it comes from external sources. Our political and religious parties and large corporations use media to propagate false consumer ideals to distract us from what true power is. They do not tell us that consumer power is temporary. They do not tell us because then we would succeed. They don’t need us to succeed, merely survive. We fall into a power trap. If we base our power on what we own, then we do not have power. By overcoming our addiction to our materialistic consumer power, and instead acknowledging ourselves as the source, we can achieve a totally different form of power and success, one that is whole and can’t be taken from us.
