Well Viv Little may have moved ‘down under’ but she is still alive and kicking when it comes to setting up KFA branded classes. Read her story on page 5. Sam and I are talking about ways in which we can improve YOUR magazine, so if you have any suggestions please do let us know by emailing us on media. submissions@hotmail.co.uk. If you have any success stories to share please do – setting up new classes, funding bids, innovative methods for increasing membership. We all want the same thing – to keep moving the KFA way. We are still looking for members to help on the marketing team. If you have skills you feel would benefit the team contact me on kfamoves@toucansurf.com.

Finally if you thought that we had recruited a new team member at the National Office, this is to confirm that Chloe Waters is still with us (thankfully) but is now known as Chloe Beckford as she got married in late 2009. We are sure that you join us in wishing Chloe and her husband a wonderful future together.

Message from The Chief Executive The growth in membership (the first in many a year) highlighted by Jeanette Hughes will start to provide KFA with a sustainable base within the EMDP ‘family’ from which to grow further and enable all of our wishes that this much needed income can then be re-invested in the training of teachers…the very lifeblood of KFA’s future. Whilst on the subject of training I am pleased to see that a number of courses under the new combined training framework are being planned for later this year and I know you will join me in thanking your colleagues who have, and will, give their valuable volunteer time in developing and delivering this new qualification towards the future ‘workforce’ of KFA. All of the above enables KFA and its teachers to take full advantage of the various opportunities that EMDP (remember - KFA is EMDP, EMDP is KFA) are creating in the wider exercise, movement & dance arena. Such as Let’s Dance with Change for Life & the Dance Champions. Recently there has been an emphasis of ‘riding on the wave’ of ‘dance’ interest which has enabled us to position EMDP and its founder and partner organisations to be able to gain maximum benefit and promotion.
To have been at the forefront of the Dance Champions Group in particular is testament to the EMDP ‘families’ ability to evolve with the environment and as time goes on we will find other similar ‘waves’ to ride that are more in tune with the ‘E’ and ‘M’ elements of Exercise Movement and Dance.
To position and use a single voice for EMD is the greatest opportunity that the founder partners envisaged and implemented when they formed EMDP and I am pleased that we are now really gaining momentum and ‘banging the drum’ for EMD and ultimately KFA. We’re not out of the woods just yet but there are definitely less trees in the way! Best wishes, Daran Bennett Chief Executive, EMDP
Message from The Chair 36% INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP – current figures 9463 Thank you, well done and congratulations to those of you who are engaged in the campaign of converting participants to members through compulsory membership for all private classes, which came into effect 1 September 2009. Also to all teachers who market membership within the employed sector. This is to acknowledge and recognise the effort and achievement you are all making. This is indeed an amazing achievement but we are ‘not out of the woods’. Following a meeting of all nine regions on Saturday 16 January, which was to agree final membership targets for each area/ region, it became clear that we need to clarify the definition of
a KFA Private class. Having the correct data about your classes is extremely important and will have a significant impact on your region’s target figures. You may well receive a call from your area/region to clarify the situation.
New Teachers and Trainers Congratulations go to the following candidates who have
successfully achieved their qualifications: Option A Option B
Do you hire the venue, set the class fee and receive all the income? Do you receive a salary or fee for teaching the class from say, Further Education/Community Colleges or Associations, W.I., U3A etc.
If your answer is ‘Yes’ to Option A and ‘No’ to Option B your class is categorised as Private. Please note: Chair Based, Youth Moves and Special Needs
Chair Based Older Adults Tony Stellmacher Ruth Carlton Marion Hinds Su Hallam Julie Perkins Marilyn Foote Marianne Martin Dorothy Buswell
classes are not included in the target figures, but we still need to record them on the database. Please do contact the office immediately if you start a new class or in the event of a closure. Please do not hesitate to contact your Regional Member Liaison Officer or Secretary if you would like any further clarification.

Joy of Movement with With up to 850 muscles, about 206 bones and over 230 moveable and semi-moveable joints in our bodies, it is hardly surprising that we suffer from occasional aches and pains, sprains and strains. Yet a survey by body pain relief expert, Voltarol®, has revealed that as many as one in three men (30%), and one in five women (20%) use no method of treatment, choosing instead to grin and bear their body pain. But there’s no need to suffer in silence as help is at hand in the form of pain relief and movement. Whilst pain relieving products can help to reduce the pain and swelling, helping to reduce discomfort, the right type of movement and exercise can also help to reduce pain and improve function in your body. By increasing the production of endorphins and serotonin, exercise can elevate mood, ease pain and promote a feeling of well being as well as even alleviate depression.
THE JOY OF MOVEMENT
Trusted by over 20 million people worldwide, Voltarol® provides a solution for a number of different types of body pain: Voltarol® Pain-eze Emulgel® has a dual action that provides relief from pain and inflammation in damage of the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints e.g. in sprains, strains and bruises and for local forms of soft tissue rheumatism. Contains diclofenac diethylammonium. For short term use only, always read the label.
Voltarol Pain-eze® Tablets, which contain 12.5 mg ofdiclofenac potassium are an alternative to ibuprofen and paracetamol and are available from the pharmacy. The tablets are suitable for short term relief of muscular pain, backache, period pain, rheumatic pain, dental pain, headache and symptoms of colds and flu, including fever. Contains diclofenac potassium. For short term use only, always read the label.
Always check with your GP or pharmacist if Voltarol Pain-eze® Tablets or Voltarol® Pain-eze Emulgel® are suitable for you.
Grow Vibrancy, Visibility and Viability I am sure that a number of us have attended workshops/ training seminars where we are set to think ‘been there, done that’. I was in that mind-set when I attended a free workshop organised by my local county sports partnership. Although the presenter was talking predominately about clubs, some of the questions and statements he made caused me to sit up and think. A successful class/club is:
ITphobic, it is in fact a relatively easy process to work through, or get someone else to do it – it does not have to be expensive and can be charged to your business. Think of it as an ‘investment’ in your future business ♦ Are you on Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, or Twitter? 40% of Facebook users are 35+ ♦ Do you use the EMDP poster frame to publicise local KFA events, Royal Albert Hall Show or class information.
Vibrant though the activities and events its creates Visible through its communications with members, supporters and general public
It is all about communication. How easy do YOU make it for people to learn what is going on? Viable — our classes are competing with the likes of local gyms,
Viable – with funding under pressure, we must diversify our revenue streams Vibrant — it made me wonder about how vibrant my classes
are. I have large classes so I must be doing something right, right! They keep coming back don’t they? I have been teaching for over 30 years so what else is there for me to learn? This made me realise I was slipping into the ‘cannot be bothered/ I’m too busy/complacent mind-set’, which says more about me than the needs/wishes of my class members.
Curves, Rosemary Conley, WiiFit, Sky, even B&Q. When was the last time you thought about changing your pricing structure? I don’t mean just putting the price up. What about: first class free – half price if you introduce a friend – buy five classes in advance and get one free and many more options. How Welcoming Is Your Class? Consider for a moment the WHOLE experience of joining your class from the customer’s point of view:– ♦ Making the decision to attend
♦ Had I donned that safe comfortable cardigan? ♦ Seeking information ♦ When was the last time you introduced something different to the class? A piece of apparatus perhaps; scarves or hoops or resistance bands?
♦ Contacting you or just turning up ♦ Transport
♦ Do you always teach to the same format or use the same type of music? ♦ Do you rely on the great fall-back comment ‘my class wouldn’t like that!’
♦ What is their experience when they get to your class? ♦ Do you make them love you? ♦ What follow up do you do?
♦ What sort of feedback do you think you might get from a new person who wants to join the class? Visible — do you have a branded poster up in the venue in
which you teach? I do even though my classes are almost full ♦ Do you have posters in other venues that direct people to your class? ♦ Did you take advantage of the ‘leaflet drop’?
♦ Do you have your own webpage? New members are contacting me via the County website or EMDP website. I am now in the process of developing my personal webpage. For those of us who are a little
♦ Do you ask/listen? How did you speak to them on the phone or by email when they first contacted you? What did you do to make them feel welcome and at ease when they first arrived? What did you say to them at the end of the class to find out how their first experience with you made them feel? What about your other class members? Has it become a private members club, a clique where new people are viewed as invaders and made to feel distinctly unwelcome? When was the last time someone new tried your class? How long did they stay? If you retain 90% of your class members per year, you will have lost more than one third in year 4. You will have
lost almost 60% if you retain 80% every year. Overall the KFA can boast high retention rates but when was the last time you asked someone why they didn’t return? This year I had 13 class members stop attending and when I asked why there were various reasons – work, family, change of circumstances etc. I also had six new members. I rang everyone to chat through why they had missed class, which provided me with vital information. Of the four new people who had left, two began a walking regime as it better suited their busy lifestyle and the other two joined Curves – a facility they could access at any time which met their needs of simple, repetitive exercise. Their feedback did however make me adjust how I cope with and integrate new people, especially if they are joining after the term has started. To conclude: ♦ How big a percentage of your local community know your class exists? ♦ How many know where you are?
G’Day All from KFA South Australia When I moved to South Australia in February 2009, I just knew I had to carry on teaching. Once we’d moved into settled accommodation, I was chomping at the bit. Fortunately, our place is slap bang next door to the most wonderful community centre with a delicious sprung floor and has the wonders of air-conditioning. I called in and introduced myself, got to know Kate, the centre manager. I told her what I did in England and that I’d like to make a start here in Adelaide. We got some dates together for a Taste Tester and set the ball rolling. So, 14 September was set, flyers printed. I had some official KFA BodyMoves posters with me, so I printed the details in the white space and put them up in every community centre and library in Adelaide and I did a door drop myself. The phone started to ring almost immediately with interested people asking about the class, what did it involve and what should they wear – you know the usual questions. I really enjoyed the chats I had with folk who didn’t have a clue about what we did.
♦ How many have been? ♦ What reception would they get and would they want to come back if they came to a class or just to have a look? So what is marketing? It is listening to people’s lives. It is everything you do – we are all marketers. Your best marketing tool is someone who has just had a great experience at your class. Six words for you: FUN TRUST PASSION CUSTOMER INNOVATION TECHNOLOGY
So what are you going to change? When are you going to change? Tomorrow Fortnight Three months Extract taken from an article submitted by Jeanette Hughes
The date came round quickly and the stage was set. I was all ready with one of my favourite routines and the set of CDs to match and I had seven turn up in the afternoon and eight in the evening! They all loved it and I was really pleased with how it went. Most signed up for the first term, although a few had only come to ensure I wasn’t on my own! I didn’t retain them all, but one lady would have had an hour’s drive back home afterwards, so whilst she loved it, she knew it would be a one-off experience! That’s the thing about setting up a new class from scratch. Is the day ok? Is the time suitable? What is the competition in the area? Is it a weight watchers night? Is there something really exciting on the telly? Do people live close or do they work close by and live elsewhere? All of these factors should be considered when first starting out. I would avoid Friday nights and Saturday mornings if you are particularly targeting the 20- to 35-year-old market. The next six weeks whizzed by and two ladies had to drop out due to ill health and so, the numbers went down a bit. Then the hot weather hit us and a couple more said they don’t go out at all when the temperature goes over 30° – another set back, but I soldiered on and decided in December, when it got quite hot and clammy, to only have one class in the evening and with the air conditioning on full pelt! Consequently, I had
quite a good number in the one class and that made a lot more sense for me financially too. Otherwise, I would have had to pay for two hours hall hire and basically have the same amount of people – not viable with these conditions.
I have been very lucky too, because three of the ladies are Weight Watchers members and so they’ve been talking about my class and a few more have come through that channel. Life. It sometimes gets in the way, so be bold and do your
On reflection, this was a great way to get me started. There was no pressure from either side and Kate knew that I was putting something on for the community and I wasn’t a multimillion dollar business enterprise using a cheap hall. Working with the centre manager is always good practice. They will want the centre to be well used and popular and will do most of the marketing for you! Their newsletter goes out to just under 300 people in the locality, and it cost me nothing! Well, January has taken off – word has got round and a few of the ladies have brought someone new each week and they are staying, so I now have 15 on the register for the one class and next week I have a ‘booking’ for two girls to have their free session. I always offer the first class free. This saves any embarrassment if they are not sure or it’s not their thing. I put that on the flyer and asked that they ‘book’ their place – that way, it suggests that the class is quite full! Always a good marketing ploy that one!

A reminder Please inform your region if you are approached to tutor any KFA course, including Chair Based courses, we would like all courses to be set up via the Regions.
EMDP Combined Training Framework (CTF) The writing of the CTF course is now complete and our thanks are due to all the authors and to Sara of EMDP for their magnificent efforts. Now comes the hard bit, getting courses up and running! EMDP have sent information to all trainers and Regional Training Committees on the procedures to follow when setting up CTF courses. For these courses to be successful we will need the support of KFA trainers and teachers throughout the country. KFA Regions have been working really hard on this, with new procedures to follow liaising with our Medau and FL (formerly TFL) partners. Please support them by encouraging students to come forward. Regions are working with the EMDP Training Group to get courses running in 2010. Yorkshire, the North East and Eastern Counties (Essex) hope to get courses started in Spring/Summer 2010. Other courses are planned for September 2010 onwards in Southern Counties, the South East and Eastern Counties. The Office also reports a number of enquiries from potential students in the London area. Not all courses may take off but everything we do helps to raise our profile. For details of proposed courses please check the EMDP website. There is an important message for all teachers. As part of CTF Stage 2 student teachers need to attend a variety of classes.
It is really down to the class teacher to ‘sell’ the KFA brand to all potential student teachers. The students may need to ask questions as part of their Stage 2 Observation Task, they will also need to get their Participation Log signed by the teacher. Your help and support in this will be much appreciated. I know
♦ Saturday 8 May 2010 (Sunday 9th will only be used if
needed to accommodate all participants), The partner organisations have agreed to fix an annual date for the CTF update training. The weekend identified is the second weekend in May every year. The May weekend will cover all the update training for the generic stages (Stages 1, 3) of the CTF and would be open to all KFA, FL and Medau trainers and to trainee trainers. Please note if you were not able to attend the CTF training last year, you will need to attend this training before delivering Stage 3 of the CTF. All trainers will receive an invitation to attend directly from the Office. ♦ Saturday 27 November 2010, provisional date for EMDP
Verifier and Assessor Training. Current Courses Congratulations on getting so many courses planned. Don’t forget to let the Office know of all proposed courses for 2010 as soon as possible.

we can rely on KFA teachers to give a warm welcome to all students, whatever their background discipline.
Thank you to all the trainers who attended the EMDP Training Day in November. Your input was invaluable. As a result of feelings expressed at the meeting about the need for a ‘mock’ examination, the EMDP Training Group is looking to provide both exemplar questions in the candidate portfolio and a ‘mock’ examination paper to be given on course (due to time constraints the latter will be a 30 minute paper). Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ) Approval If you are a new or experienced KFA Trainer who has not yet applied for CYQ approval please contact the Office for a ‘Workforce Application Form’. If you have applied but not yet received confirmation of your status with CYQ please contact Tina Kaufman on pntk@btinternet.com and this will be checked for you CTF Annual Training Days As previously notified, EMDP are looking to set up a regular programme of training related to the CTF. This training will be building on your existing skills and experience.
Teaching and Training Teachers Advanced Certificate Eileen Brookes has just finished reformatting the TAC course ready for the 10 students who have signed up to do it. It would be a real step forward if we could report that another region has managed to get one started. It is a most worthwhile course to go on, opening up a deeper understanding of Laban, widening your choreographic expertise and extending your knowledge of teaching and learning. Modular Older Adults Course The modular form of the Older Adults course is being piloted in Wokingham, developed and tutored by Eileen Bird, starting in March 2010. See separate article on page 11. Older Adults Course Funding has been secured for a Older Adults Course starting in the North East in June 2010. This will be tutored by Tonia Gabriel and Ann Brown.
Ann Cutler is to tutor an Older Adults Course in Havant in Hampshire, Jeanette Hughes is the course director Children and Young People A successful Children and Young Peoples course is being run by Jeanette Hughes in Southern Counties. This is due to finish at the end of February. Hopefully the snow and ice will not cause too much disruption and the students will all pass their assessments. Perhaps this wintry weather will give them lots of ideas for related themes. Return to Teaching Course Thanks to Eastern Counties and East Midlands this course will be going ahead this year tutored by Mo Manby.
National Training Standing Committee Sue Bennett decided to stand down from the NTSC at the end of 2009 and currently discussions are taking place as to the structure of future workings of QQA and NTSC. There have already been successful joint meetings during 2008/9 and it is anticipated that this will continue in 2010, but being ever mindful of the amount of time given to committee work we are seeking a more efficient use of time. However there is a law of ‘unintentional consequences’ so we must make sure that the individual nature of each committee is maintained and the standards and integrity by which we are known are not compromised. Teaching Older Adults Course
In Modular Format What’s in it for me – why should I attend? Question: Do you have anyone in your class aged 55+? Then you should seriously consider attending Module 1, the Ageing Process. 80% of our class members are in this age bracket and you have probably been teaching them successfully for some time. That being the case, it doesn’t mean that you would not benefit from gaining additional knowledge about the ageing process and how to adapt your content effectively to meet the needs of your class members rather than simply saying ‘don’t do it if it hurts!’ Question: Do you have anyone in your class who, for whatever reason, prefers to sit rather than get down on the floor, or is unable to stand throughout the whole lesson? Then Modules 2 and 3 might be for you. It is too simplistic to say that standing work can be adjusted so it can be performed seated. Body mechanics and safety issues have real implications when performing movements sitting down. Teaching methods and teaching skills are particularly challenged, especially if you have a mixture of some standing and some seated.
Question: Do you have anyone in your class aged 65+? In which case you might consider Module 4. Movements for the standing elderly. This module will focus on safe and purposeful teaching providing content that protects the skeleton, challenges and stimulates the brain, maintains mobility and muscle mass, is interactive and social and offers adaptations around specific medical conditions. New Year, New You This was the heading to advertise the Expo Exhibition held at Charter Hall, Colchester on 20 January 2010 organized by Essex Works (Essex County Council). Eastern Counties KFA were involved to promote and let people know who we are, where we are and what we do. Jackie Jones and Maureen Squirrell (North Essex KFA) volunteered to attend the event and armed with the EC publicity stand, lots of leaflets and information about EMDP / KFA plus vouchers to attend a free KF session in EC. Jackie has written a report on the success of the event and EC would like to give a huge vote of thanks to everyone for giving their time to attend the day, helping to promote classes and courses in EC. Later Life Expo The intention of Expo was to let the elderly throughout Essex know what is available for them in their leisure time. Advice was available regarding pensions, benefits, wealth and wellbeing. It was sponsored by a number of organizations with a special interest in this age group, e.g. retirement homes, care homes etc. Special guests Christine Walkden (BBC gardening) and Dave Monk from BBC Essex Radio were invited to attend the day. The Exhibition was very well organized with 53 exhibitors including food and gardening demonstrations, farmers’ market,
home safety and a number of sporting organizations giving demos, encouraging the public to come and join in, or just watch. There were a number of health related departments connected to the NE Primary Care Trust present, giving advice for those who are 50+. It was a huge success and it was free. Maureen and I represented Eastern Counties KFA, taking a publicity stand displaying as much information as we had available. We were both interviewed by Dave Monk at the end of the day – for radio or TV – who knows? I took a keep fit session with about 30 people from Colchester and several members of the general public also joined in (including men). The amount of interest shown by the public and the leaflets given out, together with a voucher for a free session, was phenomenal. Over 100 leaflets, together with membership details were taken mostly by people from Colchester, but the public had come from as far afield as Basildon to the south, Clacton and Harwich to the north. Representatives from different PCT health sections e.g. GP referrals, Falls Prevention, also wanted information about the KFA and what we did. The Manager of Village Agents will also be getting in touch. Those people / organizations requiring further information were directed either to the secretary of North Essex, or to the Eastern Counties website. It would seem that the general public is unaware what there is on offer for them generally in the leisure industry. Jackie Jones and Maureen Squirrell EC Trainers
