AA Visiting School Madrid 2016 - UEM (European University of Madrid) TRANS-COMPUTATIONAL MEMBRANES 4.0
Trans-computational membranes 4.0 will continue exploring computational design methods through the use of digital-analogue experimentation. With the focus on flexible materials, we have developed large scale pavilions and installations during the last three years of research, seamlessly integrating physical simulations in every step of the design process. This has been instrumental for the development of numerous Open Source modelling and generative digital design tools, enabling designers to manipulate flexible materials in a digital domain. This year’s summer workshop will setup new goals in this research, including digital fabrication modules which plug into digital design tools. Therefore, workshop participants will not only explore new digital design methods, but also novel manufacturing techniques, especially focusing on robotic fabrication of flexible structures. AAVSMadrid 2016 will therefore expand its domain from the digital to the physical in a seamless workflow, where design and fabrication is not only stitched together, but also extremely interwoven at every step. Students will take part exploring varied modeling and generative design workshops aimed at digital fabrication of textile prototypes. The course will be taught by tutors from the AA and the UEM who specialize in simulation techniques and generative design, being assisted by experts in textile materials as well as tensile structures alongside studio-based design tutorials. A series of lectures will address topics related to dynamic architectural models, adaptive systems and patterning experimentation for spatial deployment.

Textile Pavilion produced through digital fabrication, AA Visiting School Madrid 2013.
Madrid TransComputational Membranes 2.0 Tuesday 2 – Friday 12 September 2014 Transcomputational membranes 2.0 will continue exploring computational design methods through the use of digitalanalogue experimentation, challenging the way we conceive flexibility within the context of spatial readaptation as a driver for social change. Timebased dynamic systems will transform the digital–analogue divide through networks of instantaneous spatial deployment creating a symbiotic spatial context that examines newera demands. The workshop will rethink membrane structures from the micro to macro organization resulting in a habitable prototype. Through the investigation of different scales, tensile structures will primarily be readaptive environments, searching for dynamic stability while responding to new spatial necessities. Naturalbased models will be challenged through a continuous dialogue between analog and digital experimentation, where material processes and fabrication techniques are incorporated within a digital working methodology, analyzing material behavior from Nanoscale patterns to the production of physical prototypes at 1:1. Students will take part exploring varied modeling and generative design workshops aimed at digital fabrication of textile prototypes. The course will be taught by tutors from the AA and the UEM who specialize in simulation techniques and generative design, being assisted by experts in textile materials as well as tensile structures alongside studiobased design tutorials. A series of lectures will address topics related to dynamic architectural models, adaptive systems and patterning experimentation for spatial deployment. Applications 1) You can make an application by completing the online application found under ‘Links and Downloads’ on the AA Visiting School page. If you are not able to make an online application, email visitingschool@aaschool.ac.uk for instructions to pay by bank transfer. 2) Once you complete the online application and make a full payment, you are registered to the programme. The deadline for applications is 1 August 2014. All participants travelling from abroad are responsible for securing any visa required, and are advised to contact their home embassy early. After payment of fees, the AA School can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop Fees The AA Visiting School requires a fee of £695 per participant, which includes a £60 Visiting. If you are already a member, the total fee will be reduced automatically by £60 by the online payment system. Fees are non refundable. Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised. Students need to bring their own laptops, digital equipment and model making tools. Please ensure this equipment is covered by your own insurance as the AA takes no responsibility for items lost or stolen at the workshop. If you are applying before 25.06.2013 there will be an early enrolment discount of 10%. If you are applying as part of a group of 4 people there will be a group registration discount of 20%. When more than one discount option is valid, only the option with the highest discount percentage will be applied. Eligibility

seamlessly integrating physical simulations into the design process. This has facilitated the development of Open Source generative digital design tools, enabling the digital manipulation of flexible materials. This year’s workshop will continue further with this research, deploying advanced fabrication into digital design tools. Workshop participants will not only explore new design methods, but also adopt novel manufacturing techniques, focusing on robotic fabrication of flexible structures. AAVSMadrid 2016 will therefore expand its domain from the digital to the physical in a seamless workflow, where design and fabrication not only coexist, but also interweave at every step. PAVILION FLEXIBLE PROTOTYPE
Trans-computational will continue challenging the way we conceive flexibility within the context of spatial re-adaptation as a driver for social change. The construction of a third edition of our textile pavilion will take place during the workshop. The focus will be to establish a prototype of a larger operation, where computational techniques and the use of flexible materials make possible the creation of affordable inhabitable spaces, making use rapid deployment to facilitate the re-adaptation of the designed space responding to social necessities in an incredible short time-frame. The real scale prototype will aim to create a space where health is a particular feature as a way to respond to the demands of the 21st century, where the necessity of space fluctuates continuously. In a larger term it will establish the basic principles for a rapid reoccupation system, offering basic and temporal spaces to who really needs them and at the time frame that is being required. The pavilion will be design prior to the Workshop, however the construction will occur during the ten days, allowing the students to participate in the construction process as a short exercise, 1 or 2 days, within the Visiting School, helping to develop collaborative skills and responses to real life scenarios, coupled with the use of digital fabrication. Philips HUE lighting technology will be used, transforming the pavilion in a breading lighting structure. The pavilion will be featured in a series of documentaries (2014-2013 editions: https://vimeo.com/84081635 & https://vimeo.com/ 109850666) and will be exhibited at COAM during the week of Architecture (Semana de la Arquitectura). Note: Construction of the pavilion is conditional to Sponsorship
