“In looking for the right places to make these tiny changes, there are three broad areas of opportunity. You can tweak your beliefs—or what psychologists call your mindset; you can tweak your motivations; and you can tweak your habits. When we learn how to make small changes in each of these areas, we set ourselves up to make profound, lasting change over the course of our lives.”

(ARCHsharing proposes, in partnership with the association Happy Homes, the construction of the perfect housing, sustainable and replicable allowing the hosting of 6 persons and sheltering up to 8 animals. The proposal will also need to allow the development of many activities to reinforce the development of social interactions between the residents and the city or the village that will welcome this community.)

TYPOLOGY: BARN HOUSE

The barn house typology comes into the form seeking stage quite naturally due to its historic significance within the area and the frequent presence in the nearby villages. It is a typology belonging to the combination of house and barn [living and working]. It is arguably an artifact with roots in the natural world.

As a starting point, we abstract the barn house typology by introducing a new roof and structure into it. We aim to emphasize its semantics value and make it further integrate with the natural environment.

“Where space was considered permanent, it now feels transitory - on its way to becoming. The words and ideas of architecture, once the official language of space, no longer seem capable of describing this proliferation of new conditions. But even as its utility is questioned in the real world, architectural language survives, its repertoire of concepts and metaphors resurrected to create clarity and definition in new, unfamiliar domains (think chatrooms, Web sites, and firewalls).”

Typology Studies - Tulou As Prototype

Studio Project | 2019 | Field Trip to Fujian | Tutor: John Lin Theme_Research - Form Within (SOLID) & Form Outside (VOID) BRIEF “I would define the concept of type as something that is permanent and complex, a logical principle that is prior to form and that constitutes it,” - Aldo Rossi We abstract the form, explore the pure space-making process, and study the order in a pure diagrammatic way, which help us to understand the type of hierarchy we would like to curate, for any possible programs (not restriected to SCHOOL).

WHAT IS TULOU?

WHAT IS TULOU TO ME?

In the Hakka culture in Southern China, Tulou shaped the living pattern inside - maintaining a shared open space for farming activities in the center while living in a vertical section of rooms that are wrapping the collective courtyard space. It has an enclosed thick loadbearing rammed earth walls, a larger courtyard in the middle, a ringshaped cluster of smaller rooms.

When we transform a tulou with addin structures or programs without retaining the collective spirit, this is never a Tulou. Fr om generation to generation, satisfying different modern needs, Tulou is gradually modified, rescaled, and opened up. Tulou became a symbol of collective housing, as certain artifacts always remain in people’s memories. Therefore to study Tulou as a prototype is not to study its form, but to study the communal life style and hierarchical living pattern retained in the form.

However, when rural is urbanized, the tulou’s center has housed other functions over time: religious activities, marketplaces, or schools.

With a collective effort, the heavy mud wall is built in a long, tedious process. Builders need to make ‘mud bricks’ by themselves using mostly soil and sand, then stack the mud bricks layer by layer to the optimal height. Dwellers often build their own Tulou collectively, passing the experience and tradition to their children. However, with more people move out of Tulou and moved to modern buildings, this traditional technique and mud molding skill are fading away with time.

FUNCTION School - playground, classrooms, viewing platform, civic centre LOCATION Lantian Village, Longyan, Fujian Province, China

In Nikolaus Pevsner’s “A History of Building Types ( 1976 )” -- types are manifested according to form: centralised plan, linear arrangement, courtyard. Under this exploration, a TYPE becomes a universal laguage, recognized by its form; not by its material, facilities, and program.

Interior - a park hidden in the urban

FORM WITHIN & FORM OUTSIDE

A RURAL HOUSE IN URBAN CONTEXT

In order to create ‘2 contrasting spatial configurations’ , I tested with concrete modeling for paradoxical forms within a pure geometry.

The old is forgotten, subsituted by an universal urbanisation. The land’s uniqueness is erased, with one Rural House remains, competes against all the dense blocks and housing developers. Originally as a collective housing, now it is a road bloack that is hard to access and lived by no one. However, it still functions as a locus for a city’s collective memories, a social history of the site.

In plan [form within] and in modeling [form outside], SCHOOL is a hybrid of ‘orderly space and freespace’. I scattered ‘Boxes’ freely within a lifted square platform to create a randomness in an enclosed form. There has no definite in-and-out , private-public relationship; however, hierarchies are displayed in a simplest way - an elevated public ground dominates the public land below and the rooms within.

Exterior - a past burried by the modern

Under urbanisation, a rural collective housing TYPE no longer retains the same function in an urban land. Thus, I challenged our preconceived ideas of a tulou for future programmatic, structural or spatial transformation of the TYPE.

Inside, spatial transformation in horizontal layers provides different perspectives to view the Tulou. It will be no longer symmetrical and less rational. However, under the original grid system of Tulou, a complex space is created with structural order.

Mud Wall and Brick Arches are heavy and solid, hard to adjust afterwards. These permanent structures interact and create complex spaces for flexible activities, bringing lives and changes to an abandoned Tulou. ANSWER: Plug-In System

f

2000

(Rural Urban Framework (RUF) is the research and design collaborative between Joshua Bolchover and John Lin. The objective of our work is to engage in the rural-urban transformation of China and Mongolia through built projects, research, exhibitions and writing.)

The Plug-in project rethinks the defensive wall by taking the tulou inside out, opening it to the new surroundings. Individual transformations such as plug-in of toilets already occurred in the tulou that was previously renovated into a children’s school by the Government. The Plug-in prototype transforms a small window into a new entrance, adding a public reading room to the already functioning school. The funnel staircase plugged into the opening invites people to sit, read and rest in the shadow, while serving as an open amphitheatre for activities in the courtyard.

City design is therefore a temporal art… At every instant, there is more than the eye can see, more than the ear can hear, a setting or a view waiting to be explored. Facade can shape city identity, its pure material pattern shows the structural and aesthetic needs of the region. We can speculate the building type with the facade, i.e. stone for chapel, glass and frame for skyscrapers. Also, the grids of these repetitive patterns give us a sense of scale.

In a timeline, we can see Central’s building envelopes change from solid, heavy, decorated masonry; to pure straight lines, flat, glass facade. In terms of the formation of the city image, we can see the city evolves from the complex, contoured, curvy-patterned facade to a flat, straight, thin-lined facade.

A - Harbourfront Section

B - Connaught Road Section Design Firstly, to add height to City Hall without modifying an existing structure, a new box is lifted above it. the decrease in space on the ground level is compensated by extending the volume horizontally above. Space is thus divided vertically. The covered outdoor space naturally becomes a resting place. The new volume shelters City Hall without touching it, while at the same time create a Billboard Effect for City Hall from further away. At the lower level of the building, we establish a core structure made out of 50cm thick concrete as a linear gallery space, an escalator attached on the core wall leading up through the thick floor slab to an open terrace. The terrace at the second level becomes a raised-up plaza with a main truss in the center, allowing for public activities and further creating an open sea-side view.

A Billboard Celebrates Pop Culture My design - City Cinema, attempts to commemorate the traces of old Hong Kong and trends of modern needs in the site. The movie is a pop culture since the 1950s and is internationally commercialized in recent 10 years. It mediates the highclass theatric programs in City Hall and vitalizes the place with the pop culture. As such, an ideal program to update the City Hall.

Material Fabrication Modular Structure

Elective Project | 2019 | Hong Kong | Collaborated with Shuman Chan, Esther Chan, Jimmy Theme_Digital Media & Design Computation Fabrication - Carpentry And Joinery Our project intends to use modular joinery to create a pavilion. The kumiki joints have multiple wood sticks to form a cross-type joinery, they first are connected to form a curvy edge, then, with precise calculation, the modules interlock and form an arch.

Fabrication - Waterjet And Frabic Our project marries two plastic materials which are different in terms of weight, thickness transparency and flexibility. The thicker upcycled polyethylene plastic performing semi strucutural quality as an enclosed ring and a stand, works in pair with the lighter rings that is less structural but more flexible to change its shape.
