European Christmas markets

Alive with the sweet smell of glühwein and roasting chestnuts, the Christmas markets of Europe promise an experience so magical, they’ve been replicated the world over.

Originating in Germany, row upon row of wooden stalls, adorned with twinkling lights, set the stage for these fantastically festive markets, where local tradespeople are invited to sell their wares from the gingerbread-like kiosks that have given them their signature appearance. Now, many European cities have followed suit, successfully recreating their own versions in some of the most spectacular settings imaginable.

Celebrate the Yuletide with Emerald Cruises, breathing in the heady smells and tasting your way through artisanal sweet treats and soul-warming hot drinks. You’ll have the opportunity to visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Regensburg, once described as having ‘the loveliest’ Christmas markets which you will visit in the Thurn und Taxis Palace grounds as part of an included excursion, as well as Cologne, which comprises seven markets, the most impressive of which is held in the shadow of the stunning twin-spired Gothic cathedral. In southern France, the medieval streets of Avignon are stunning on a winter’s day. Discover the nativity scene at Avignon’s Palais-des-Papes, buy handmade souvenirs, and try saucisson before a Provençal Christmas dinner on board.

We offer a fantastic collection of city stays to extend your festive adventure through Europe.
