About Emergency Food Network Who are you helping at the Hunger Walk & 5K Run? The Hunger Walk & 5K Run benefits Emergency Food Network (EFN), the only nonprofit food distributor in Pierce County. EFN serves a network of 76 food pantries, meal sites, and shelters located throughout Pierce County. Each month, EFN provides our Partner Programs with more than one million pounds of food, at no cost to them! Support for the Hunger Walk & 5K Run will ultimately benefit individuals and families experiencing food insecurity in Pierce County. Our Partner Programs accommodated 1.3 million total client visits in 2018, an average of 111,000 visits each month. Because EFN distributes 5 meals for every $1 we receive, your participation in the Hunger Walk & 5K Run will provide hundreds of meals to our neighbors in need.
What impact does Emergency Food Network have in Pierce County? Unfortunately, food insecurity is a problem in every community in America, including Pierce County. Research shows that one in seven people in Pierce County experience food insecurity at some point throughout the year. Families experiencing food insecurity may have to decide between paying rent and buying food, or an adult may skip a meal so that children can eat. Providing our Partner Programs with food ensures that when these families visit in need, they can leave with enough food for nine meals.
Who is Associated Ministries? Associated Ministries (AM) is our co-sponsor for the Hunger Walk & 5K Run. AM was one of the founding members of EFN along with FISH Food Banks, Tacoma Rescue Mission, and Salvation Army. For 36 years, Associated Ministries had hosted the Hunger Walk to partly benefit EFN. In 2017, Associated Ministries “passed the baton” to Emergency Food Network as the host of this annual walk and run.
How can you learn more about Emergency Food Network and local food pantries? On race day, visit the “Emergency Food Network” booth in the vendor area. We would love to talk with you! If you would like to learn more now, visit www.efoodnet.org.
