Ecosystem Building a New Generation of Open Embedded Computing Platforms

Just as nature relies on communities of organisms functioning as an ecological unit, embedded computing platforms depend on a broad and powerful ecosystem, including standards bodies, industry associations, building block suppliers and software vendors.

eco·sys·tem (noun) – the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit Emerson Network Power brings a wealth of innovation and many years experience to accredited standards development organizations, specification consortia and industry associations through our executive memberships and key committee positions. We have long been committed to a strong ecosystem that works to further the development of the industries and technologies that are key to our customers’ success. To deliver the benefits of open, application-enabling blades and platforms for Business-Critical Continuity™, Emerson is working in multiple industries to define and spur the widespread acceptance of standards-based platform architectures. We are leading the way in selecting the subset of competing standards that will best help embedded computers evolve and deliver benefits quickly. Working with industry associations in areas such as architecture and interoperability enables our customers to take advantage of these standards quickly. Leveraging open computing platforms from Emerson allows our customers to re-allocate their resources to the development of distinctive, value-add applications that work to differentiate them in their markets.

Over two decades of building relationships Our work on industry standards, which began with the standardization of VMEbus technology over 20 years ago, continues through our current efforts with SCOPE Alliance profiles, PICMG® and Service Availability Forum™ specifications and OpenSAF software. We are there to ensure that the voice of the customer is heard and to translate new standards into industry-leading products. We understand the value of widely accepted industry standards and work to facilitate the development of solid ecosystems that assure successful adoption of standards in the embedded computing industry. To this end, we have become a founding member of the Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA).

The Open Service Availabililty Framework

A vision for success Today, Emerson Network Power holds leadership positions in many organizations that are shaping the future of embedded computing. Below are a few of the associations and organizations where we are active in the participation and governing of these standards, specifications and groups. Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA) establishes certification criteria and interoperability test procedures for specificationbased AdvancedTCA®, AdvancedMC™, and MicroTCA™ products. The Innovation Partnership Program is Emerson Network Power's community of collaborative developers, suppliers, integrators and distribution channels who are committed to transforming leading-edge embedded technologies into globally available, application-specific business solutions. The Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance is a community of communications and embedded developers, and solutions providers committed to the development of modular, standards-based solutions on Intel technologies. We are a Premier Member.

Open Service Availability Framework (OpenSAF) Foundation is an open source project established to develop a base platform middleware consistent with Service Availability Forum specifications. It was established by leading communications and enterprise computing companies to facilitate the OpenSAF Project and to accelerate the adoption of the OpenSAF code base in commercial products. PICMG is dedicated to the development and marketing of open specifications for high performance telecommunications and industrial computing applications, including AdvancedTCA®, AdvancedMC™, MicroTCA™ and CompactPCI®. We are an executive member and participate in multiple active technical working groups. SCOPE is an industry alliance committed to accelerating the deployment of carrier grade base platforms for service provider applications. Service Availability Forum (SA Forum) is an organization whose intent and purpose is to create, promote and establish open standard interfaces to facilitate development, deployment and vertical integration of applications and components that ensure service availability for users of the telecommunications infrastructure. Emerson Network Power is a charter member.
