THE family of an eight-year-old boy from Lyde Green who has leukaemia are hoping treatment in Turkey will provide them with the lifeline they need. As previously reported, Lee Belgium’s family are calling on the community to help them raise £90,000 for treatment. As the Voice went to press, the family had raised £23,000. Lee, who was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May 2016 when he was six, has undergone intensive chemotherapy and also spent six months in hospital. The disease returned in January and May 2018, when he ended up dying for eight minutes and spent two months recovering in intensive care. His family were given the devastating news in August 2018 that cancer had returned in his bone marrow, and he now goes to Bristol Children’s Hospital three times a week to have chemotherapy, steroids and a new trial drug. The family have decided to do everything they can to raise £90,000 for Lee to go abroad for a treatment trial and a bone marrow transplant,

which they hope will save his life. Following our last report, Lee’s mum Clare has received the news that Bristol Children’s Hospital plan to change Lee’s chemotherapy to a higher dose of cyclophosphamide and cytarabine, and a hospital in Turkey has also said that they are

able to treat him. The treatment at Memorial Sisli Hospital in Istanbul will cost $50,000 for six weeks of chemotherapy and hospitalisation, and despite the family having raised just under half of the total needed so far through selling a car, their online fundraising pages and fundraising events, the hospital have said that Clare can put down an initial payment of $5000 on the day and the remaining funds paid later. Clare will travel with Lee to Turkey, and although she is uncertain on dates at the moment she told the Voice that Lee is looking forward to the trip. She said: “At the moment he is going to hospital every day, and we’re glad that there’s something out there that can help him.” The family are hoping that the treatment will help to get Lee’s cancer under a certain level, and their main goal is a

bone marrow transplant which should take place after six weeks, depending on the success of the initial treatment. Park Primary School in Kingswood have donated £1800, Cleve Rugby Club in Mangotsfield ran a family fun day with bouncy castle, wrestling match and live band, a coffee morning was held at Lyde Green Community Centre and the Malthouse Pub in Thornbury held a bingo night and will hold a family fun day on Sunday March 3. A charity football match at Ashton Gate Stadium is planned for Thursday May 9. To find out more about Lee’s fight, visit the family’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/leebelgium. n NEWS Pints, poppadoms plasters (and beer) PINTS, Poppadoms and Plasters is the title of the latest initiative from Downend Round Table – and it could help save a life. Downend Round Table's community support officer Paul Wells said: “We are well known in the local community for our annual fireworks display and Santa sleigh, but there’s so much more to Round Table. I’m really looking forward to this event and the opportunity to give something back to our local community.” The event will take place at Downend Cricket Club on Monday March 11 from 7.30pm. Barclays to close branch BARCLAYS Bank is to close its Emersons Green branch. The bank at Unit 7, The Village, opposite Sainsburys, will close in May. Its the three staff are expected to be offered jobs at other branches. Barclays says it has made the decision as almost nine out of ten customers of the branch are banking online or by phone and nearly half of them regularly use other branches. It is advising customers that they can use post offices for everyday transactions. The nearest remaining Barclays branches will be in Fishponds and Kingswood. Barclays Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire community banking director Mark Hatcliffe said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices. “At Barclays Emersons Green branch, customer usage has continued to decline and additionally 86% of our branch customers are also using other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone. “On average, nearly half [43%] of our customers now regularly use alternative branches and this figure is higher for our

business customers, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch. “We hope that the availability of alternative Barclays branches at Fishponds, Kingswood and Yate and access to services at the Post Office including Downend and Staple Hill, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.” The bank said it “did not take the decision to close any branch lightly”. Customers were due to be sent a letter officially notifying them of the decision to close and were being encouraged to talk to staff in the branch about any concerns they might have. Before closing on May 17, Barclays was also due to “proactively engage” with local businesses over alternative banking arrangements and host ‘tea and teach’ digital banking sessions at the branch. Asked about the future of staff at the branch, a Barclays spokesperson added: “We will be working with our colleagues on an individual basis with the intention of redeploying them to other branches.”

n NEWS PLANS to build nearly 400 homes at Lyde Green have been unveiled by a developer. The 398 homes would be built next to the M4, Henfield Road and a section of the Mangotsfield to Yate cycle path. Developer Edward Ware Homes has submitted plans for the houses, which would surround Grade II-listed Lyde Green Farm, to South Gloucestershire Council. The housebuilder says the new homes would help to meet an “acute” need for housing in the area. It is planning to build 159 three-bedroom houses, with the rest a mix of one-bedroom flats, two-bedroom flats and houses, and houses with four or five bedrooms. Just over a third of the total would be “affordable” – available for social rent or sharedownership schemes – in line with council requirements, according to planning documents. To cut down noise from the M4, the new homes beside the motorway would be built in a series of long, three-storey

Historic buildings at Lyde Green Farm would be at the heart of the new ‘village’ blocks. Those flats and town houses would have closed-board timber fencing around their gardens, special glazing and no windows in “habitable” rooms facing the motorway, according to the plans. The development would come with parking spaces for 813 cars and 119 bikes. A village green and community orchard is planned between Henfield Road and the farm buildings, along with green corridors to protect the Dramway footpath and cycle path. The plans state that an access road would be built to the Avon Ring Road and the development would be served by a public transport ‘bus loop’ through the site and along Henfield Road. “The vision is to create a development sensitive to the setting of the listed buildings at Lyde Green Farm, linking to the wider Emersons Green East site but retaining its own ‘village’ character,” the application states. The council intends to decide on the application, P19/1275/F, by early June.

n NEWS DOWNEND School is celebrating after again being judged Good by Ofsted. A team from the inspection watchdog visited the secondary school in January and said standards remained high in all areas.Headteacher Lisa Howell said it was gratifying to retain the Good rating

Downend School remains Good - Ofsted gained in 2014, especially under the new tougher Ofsted framework introduced in 2017 was significantly tougher than before. “That, along with the challenges of the new exam

specifications and grading systems, and reduced funding, means that the ‘bar’ has risen, making the achievement of a Good judgement an excellent outcome for the school, staff, students, governors, the

community and Castle School Education Trust.” Mrs Howell thanked the very high number of parents and staff who gave positive comments and also said she was proud of the way students spoke to the Ofsted team. The Ofsted letter in full can be found at bit.ly/2X9zW8n

Success! £0.5m for sports pitch DOWNEND School - no stranger to sporting triumph - has seen one of its biggest wins to date. The secondary school has been successful in its bid for a £500,000 grant from the Premier League & the FA Facilities Fund for a new 3G all-weather pitch to replace the ageing astroturf. Work to install the upgraded specialist sports playing surface is set to begin next month and should be completed by September. Headteacher Lisa Howell said: "We are thrilled that this application has been successful. This will be a fantastic facility development for both the school and the local community. "I would like to thank Ann Duff, from Castle School Education Trust, and our business manager Kim Humphris for their hard work and commitment to this project along with our community partners, Downend Saints, Downend Flyers and Bromley Heath Football Club for working with us and supporting our bid application." Football is particularly popular at Downend School, with about 80 pupils from all year groups attending training every week. The school is seeking kit sponsors for a tour to Barcelona. In need of a makeover - Downend Sports Hall

Can you help with Community DIY Day? IT'S great to be getting a new 3G pitch - but Downend School fears that its bright new artifical turf will make its sports hall look even more "tired". Given that money is tight, the school has decided to appeal to local people to help spruce the place up by donating time, skills and materials. Headteacher Lisa Howell said: "I know there is a very real appetite from the

Students launch ÂŁ50,000 appeal for refurbishment STUDENTS at Mangotsfield School are taking direct action to ease the funding crisis. They have launched a crowdfunding campaign in an effort to raise ÂŁ50,000 to improve the science labs at the secondary school in Rodway Hill. The centrepiece of their fundraising will be an auction of goods and promises to be held in the summer and they are appealing to parents, friends, former students and people in the community to contribute to it. They are also asking local tradespeople to consider donating time and materials to carry out the improvements. "Think DIY SOS but without Nick Knowles and no camera crew," they said in an open letter to families. The financial struggles of Mangotsfield School and others in the Castle School Education Trust (CSET) were highlighted in the BBC Two series School last autumn. The show brought home to people the realities behind the statistics that show that South Gloucestershire schools are the lowest funded in England.

Headteacher David Spence said one of the best outcomes of the TV show was the number of parents now willing to support the school with fundraising activities. It was a parent who came up with the idea of the auction, inspired by students from the school who won a national prize for enterprise when they held one. Now the school is taking things a stage further by encouraging BTEC business students to lead the Mango50 fundraising effort, approaching local companies and celebrities for support. "I am very proud of the students who represented Mangotsfield at the launch of the campaign," Mr Spence said. "There is so much positivity in the school

Budding performers tread the boards at community centre

A THEATRE group that has recently started running sessions in Lyde Green is looking for recruits. Affordable Theatre Co (ATC) was set up six years ago after it was realised that bigger stage schools were out pricing families, meaning that it was difficult for some children to be able to attend drama classes and perform in theatres. The group has moved over to Lyde Green Community Centre from Emersons Green Village Hall and run sessions for two age groups: ATC Minis for 6-11 year olds and ATC Youth 12-21 year olds. At the sessions young people have the chance to learn theatre skills through song, dance, acting and drama games, as well as learn musicals and perform three or four shows a year in various venues around Bristol. Sarah Haworth is ATC’s production director. She directs, produces, choreographs and musically directs musicals, and wrote and produced the Bristol Gang Show at The

Bristol Hippodrome for 10 years. Commenting on the group’s classes at Lyde Green Community Centre, she said: “ATC is one big family, there are beautiful friendships formed between the children and the teenagers alike. We have a huge team of volunteers, and without them we would have to employ sound engineers, lighting designers, wardrobe managers, front of house staff and box office managers and the children’s fees and ticket prices would hike right up! “Students who come to us grow in confidence, build friendships and learn skills in speaking out loud, timing, team work and so much more than just singing and dancing.” The group are working on a performance of ‘Summer Holiday’ and last year they

performed Shrek, Aladdin, Copacabana and The Wizard of Oz. ATC holds sessions at Lyde Green Community Centre for 6-11 year olds on Mondays from 5pm – 6:15pm and on Wednesdays from 4pm – 5:30pm, and for 12 – 21 year olds on Wednesdays from 5:30pm

– 7pm. There is also a session for both age groups on Saturday mornings from 9am – 10:10am. Weekly sessions cost £7, but a free taster is offered for the first time a child attends. To find out more about ATC, visit: www.affordabletheatre. com or email: classes@ affordabletheatre.com

Work to start at last on nursery building PARENTS of toddlers in Lyde Green finally have some positive news - work is due to start on a nursery for the estate this month. The facility was initially expected to be completed by Easter 2018, ready to be occupied in September 2018. However, listed buildings nearby and ground levels caused some delays and it was not until January this year that planning permission was granted.. The provider of the nursery, Happy Days Nurseries, is planning a single storey building which will include an allocation for 13 car parking spaces, an outdoor play area and places for 81 children from three months to four years old. The nursery will also have its own kitchen so that meals can be cooked onsite, and when it’s full they expect to have up to 40 employed staff, with 27 in at any one time. The principal idea at Happy Days Nurseries is that everything is free flowing,

allowing children to play in their own time rather than having a structure that is too regimented. The development team of Clipper Properties and their contractor Kitto plc have been working with the Housing Consortium and South Gloucestershire Council to deliver the nursery, and Happy

Days Nurseries is hoping to open the facility in early 2020, with construction fully starting in early March 2019. Kevin Higgs, development director for Happy Days Nurseries, said: “We are delighted to be working with Clipper and Kitto to start the delivery stage of this

development. We have been working hard with the council, landowner and developer to deliver a nursery that fits into the community and provides much needed early years care for the expanding community in this part of Bristol. “Whilst the construction of the building gets going during March, we will be discussing the details of our nursery with the community and stakeholders, so that once we have a final opening date we can actively get involved with parents in the lead up to the opening in 2020.” Happy Days Nurseries is in fourth place on Nursery World’s list of the top 20 largest nursery chains in the country. The provider currently runs 21 settings and for those which are eligible for an Ofsted rating, 100% have been given the rating of Outstanding and Good. Doynton Hard Half Marathon a storming success A VILLAGE was taken over by hundreds of runners and volunteers as it hosted a halfmarathon across rugged terrain. The Doynton Hard Half Marathon (DHHM) is staged by Emersons Green Running Club and this year’s event was the fourth staging of the event. Some 500 eager cross country runners plus a supporting crew of 130 race volunteers were involved in the race on January 20. The 13.1 mile course takes runners on a challenging tour of fields, hills, rivers, trails and footpaths in and around Dyrham, Wick, Abson, Pucklechurch and Doynton itself. Organisers said this year’s race was the “biggest, hardest, and most fun yet”, with runners able to refuel at ‘pop-up pubs’ serving non-alcoholic beer instead of water stations. They were also entertained by a Samba dance and drumming group, a choir, ukulele players and a solo

n NEWS Hi everyone, PUCKLECHURCH CEVC Primary Sports Crew here, reporting on one of the most exciting events of the year so far! We had a whole school opening ceremony for our new Daily Mile track. Our Key Stage 1 children are so pleased with the new track, telling us that they want to run faster as they feel safer on the track and that they can’t wait to use it on Sports Day. Before we tell you more about the afternoon, we have a few people we need to say a special ‘thank you’ to. Firstly, to our school’s PTA. Without their kind and generous donation, we wouldn’t have had the money for the new track. Secondly, we would like to thank the Healthy Schools Fund, an initiative that helps to transform school facilities to give children a healthy start to life. The afternoon began with an energetic wake and shake which the whole school (including parents!) joined in with. After this, the youngest and oldest child in the school had the honours of cutting the ribbon to officially open the new track. One by one, each year group stepped up to complete as many laps as they possible could. Every child

Why we love our Daily Mile track

worked so hard and did the school extremely proud. Our afternoon was so busy because we also had a huge variety of sporting activities going on; the children were definitely exhausted by the end! Some parents that attended our opening ceremony have told us that they think the new track is fabulous and that it makes a big difference to our school. We loved sharing the event with them, so we wish to thank everyone who came along to celebrate with us. We interviewed Mrs Capel, our head teacher, and she said: “I love the colour of the new track as it’s more easily noticeable by members of the community. It is a demonstration of our commitment to

children getting fitter and healthier. It would be amazing to have people from the community also come in and get use of the track.” Children have told us that they feel our new track is a huge improvement to the older one as it’s brighter and more appealing.

Other children commented that they feel they want to put in more effort on the Daily Mile now because they want to be an inspiration to others and show children how to be healthy. We also managed to speak to Mrs Bryan, our PE lead, who said: “It’s great to see more children using it more effectively on a daily basis, plus we can use it in all weather conditions so there’s always chance for everybody to be involved!" Moving forward, we are extremely keen to run Pucklechurch Primary’s own sponsored race so that we can raise money for a chosen charity as well as continue to build on the idea of all children having equal opportunity to be active. Another idea we have had is to set a variety of challenges for children to complete during their time on the Daily Mile to ensure children stay focused, engaged and motivated at all times! Bold bid to Mystery smell: clues emerge renew pool PARENTS are pulling together to help raise £80,000 to refurbish a primary school’s swimming pool. The pool at Barley Close Primary School in Mangotsfield is well used, not only by pupils but also children from across the area who come for lessons outside school hours. It is also hired out for parties and private sessions. Because the pool is in an uninsulated building and is not heated, it can only be used for part of the year and it has very basic changing area and no toilets. Volunteers from support group the Friends of Barley Close have made funding a complete refurbishment of the pool their “most ambitious” target. The friends are holding fundraising events, including a women’s pamper night, to be held at the our school on March 29 from 6.30pm until 9pm.

THE source of an unexplained smell that is causing concern among residents in Lyde Green and Emersons Green could soon be traced. The smell, most commonly experienced early in the morning and during the evening, is described as having an egg or sulphur odour. The Environment Agency, which regulates three operators in our area, says it is investigating potential sources and the operators have cooperated to change their working practices and cut the risk of further odours developing. In Westerleigh, effluent from the Tulip abattoir was found to be passing through the sewer under the village, which is now going to be redirected by Wessex Water. The abattoir has also improved its ventilation and filtration. At the Shortwood Landfill

site, operator Enovert is collecting more landfill gas in underground wells before burning it, thanks to more boreholes being added to the extraction system. Other steps taken include resealing a number of these gas wells, replacing a leachate storage tank, installing new covers for some leachate wells to stop gas escaping, and permanently capping parts of the site that are full in order to contain gas and odour. The third operator, Vertase FLI Ltd, is excavating a historic landfill site as part of the Lyde Green housing development and the Environment Agency is checking to see if it is still emitting gas. The coal mines in this part of our area once had shafts that were described as ‘odorous and sulphurous’ in historic documents, with one mine in particular known as ‘Old Stinker’. Odour has been

noticed by springs in Lyde Green as part of Vertase’s daily odour monitoring, but the Environment Agency says a connection between them and mining has not yet been proven, although monitoring is ongoing. Addressing the concerns of residents, a spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “The Environment Agency has been investigating residents’ odour complaints since May 2018. The smell has been described as rotten eggs and tends to happen after dark, which makes checking any permitted activity in the area to find the source difficult. This, combined with the infrequency of the smell and the intensity not matching the location reported, adds to this difficulty. “Our investigation to find the source of this odour is ongoing and we thank residents for continuing to alert our 0800 807060 hotline when it occurs.”

You’ve got the skills to foster...

Pre-school praised

A PRE-school that has been helping prepare Mangotsfield children for school for more than 50 years has been praised by Ofsted. The watchdog rates pre-schools in four areas: leadership and management; teaching and learning quality; children’s development, behaviour and welfare; outcomes for children. Mangotsfield PreSchool, which has 53 children on its roll, is rated good in all areas. Inspector Rachael Williams highlighted the school’s inclusive environment, one-to-one support from staff to children and the leadership of manager Tracey Ashford.

Council tax increases win approval TAX payers will see their bill for basic South Gloucestershire Council services rise by an average of £43 this year. The council has agreed a 2.99 per cent increase in council tax. That means average Band D householder will have a bill for £1,484.15, up from £1,441.07. Emersons Green residents also pay a precept for services provided by the town council. This year the town council’s overall precept spend of £234,285 will translate to a charge of £39.40 per Band D household. A charge for “special expenses” – £18.02 for Emersons Green Band D tax payers – is added to bills for services which are specific to the area but provided by South Gloucestershire Council rather than the town council. In Pucklechurch the parish council’s overall precept

Council leader Toby Savage spend of £70,891 will see Band D taxpayers charged £77.29, with an extra £22.16 for special expenses added by South Gloucestershire. A £26.13 rise in combined police and fire precepts will see these elements of Band D bills cost £291.29. It means the total bill for

a Band D council tax payer in Emersons Green will be more than £1,830. The Conservative administration at South Gloucestershire, whose budget was passed on February 13, says it is investing “into the next generation”. Council leader Toby Savage said: “We have put forward the largest funding commitments this council has ever made to our schools and to our roads, this administration’s two highest priorities.” Liberal Democrat group leader Claire Young called the budget “a classic pre-election extend and pretend budget” which ignored the central issue of government underfunding. Labour group leader Pat Rooney said the government reduction in the council’s funding of 11.2% was more than the national average decrease of

7.5% and added: “The primary cause of our financial problems is the Tories in Whitehall.” • Emersons Green Town Council has earmarked £450,000 as reserves for its community project, and £98,000 is also to be earmarked as general reserves, which is within the limits recommend by the National Association of Local Councils. Emersons Green mayor Rich Nichols said: "Emersons Green Town Council has held its precept at the same level since 2012 and we continue to have one of the lowest precepts within South Gloucestershire. “Over the last year we have introduced a new Youth Outreach Service and we hope to expand youth provision in the town. We have reserves for a community project and we will be consulting local residents on this over the coming year."

n LETTERS Not our failure FURTHER to the article from Bruce Waddell (Accident waiting to happen here) published in your December 2018 edition, Pucklechurch Parish Council would like to make a response. Pucklechurch Parish Council have added schemes to the South Gloucestershire Council Local Transport Priority List to reduce speed in the village, details below: KF29 - To investigate speed reduction and weight restriction measures in the village, this has been on the list since August 2011. KF101 – Speed table north of Homefield Road junction and speed table outside Post Office, this has been on the list since April 2013. KF136 – 30mph speed limit extension to Quackers Café, BS16 9SJ, this has been on the list since December 2015. Therefore this is not a failing of the Parish Council but a failing by South Gloucestershire Council who haven’t yet actioned our requests. Pucklechurch Parish Council

Quizzes raise funds for infant loss charity A CHARITY that helps bereaved parents of babies has benefited after a beauty pageant winner from Lyde Green held a series of themed quizzes to raise funds. Jasmine Jade Lines from Lyde Green was named as Miss Bristol Diamond for 2019 in November, the first person to represent Bristol in the pageant for a few years. The Miss Diamond pageant is now in its fourth year, and one person represents each city in the different categories: Classic, Mrs/Ms, Miss, Teen, Junior and Mini. The winner of each category at the UK finals in April will go on to the International finals in Las Vegas in June. As part of Jasmine’s fundraising duties before the finals, she organised a Disney themed quiz at The Huntsman pub in Downend on January 20, and two Harry Potter themed quizzes at The Folly on February 9 and The Huntsman

on February 10. Prizes available at the quizzes included themed goody bags, and the top prize for the Harry Potter quiz was a pair of tickets for the Harry Potter Studio Tour in Watford. Jasmine also had plans to hold a fundraising pageant for children aged between two and 12 at Emersons Green Village Hall on February 16. This was postponed due to low numbers, but Jasmine has told the Voice that she still plans to run it once she has received more interest. March 17 is a provisional date. In total, just under £1,000 has been donated so far to Sands, a miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss charity. Bristol Sands secretary Kaeti Morrison said: “Everyone at Bristol Sands would like to say a huge thank you to Jasmine for all of her hard work in raising such a fantastic amount of money. Fifteen babies a day are stillborn or die within four weeks

of birth in the UK. Losing a baby is a traumatic and isolating experience and Bristol Sands is committed to supporting bereaved parents through such an awful time in their lives. “The money Jasmine has raised will enable us to continue to do this by contributing to the running of the group, meaning we can continue to support our local hospitals in providing care to bereaved parents, hold our monthly support meetings, put on three memorial services a year and provide our bi-annual newsletter.” Jasmine has organised a children’s disco on Friday March 1 at either Lyde Green Community Centre or Emersons Green Village Hall from 5-9pm. Entry is £3 per child and tickets must be purchased in advance. To find out more about Jasmine’s fundraising, email: missbristoldiamondevents@ gmail.com

n NEWS AN AUTHOR from Pucklechurch has combined her two passions – dogs and camping - in her latest book. Dog lover Anna Chelmicka took up writing, photography and travelling after a 30-year teaching career. She found there was very little information out there on dogfriendly campsites so decided to write about the subject herself. Wonderful Walks from Dogfriendly Campsites Throughout the UK was published on February 15. The 248-page fully illustrated book features 46 circular walks from 23 campsites, with each trek ranging from eight to 11 miles. Anna developed a love of dogs as a child when her father was given a German Shepherd as payment for a job. Her love of camping, however, took a little longer to nurture. Anna said: “My initial camping experience with the Guides under bell tents was not especially happy. However later, when my children were

19

Local author's latest book

Anna with her pet Labrador Pearl small, our trips out in our campervan were exciting and great fun. This changed when they became teenagers so I took a break. When I retired I bought a motorhome and began a new phase, but this time with a dog as company.

“I travelled all over Europe and the UK in my motorhome and having to exercise a dog resulted in the need to explore the areas around campsites. I discovered how little information there was about the suitability of campsites for dogs despite so many people taking their pets camping with them.” In 2016 Anna wrote a series of articles about walks from campsites for Motorhome magazine, which were to form the basis of her book. “For those who like camping and walking but aren’t sure where to go, this book will help you find the perfect location,” said Anna. “All of the campsites are located very close to footpaths and walking trails and the walks provide the opportunity to explore the area and appreciate the diverse environments that can be found in Britain.”

Anna did most of her research with her current dog Pearl, a yellow Labrador Retriever and the great-granddaughter of Ruby, the subject of her first book, My Friend Ruby, who died in May 2016. “In the book there is a section called Pearls of Wisdom where she gives a review of all the campsites from a dog's perspective.” Wonderful Walks from Dogfriendly Campsites Throughout the UK is published by Hubble and Hattie, part of the Veloce publishing group, £14.99. Anna will be signing copies at the Rose and Crown in Pucklechurch on Sunday March 10 from 4.30pm.

n REFLEXOLOGY WITH RACHAEL The effects of stress on our bodies – and how reflexology can help LIFE can be incredibly stressful at times – whether it’s a looming deadline at work or a problem in our personal life, none of us are immune to its effects. ‘Fight or flight’ is an automatic response that affect our whole body. As we release adrenaline, our heart rate quickens, our breathing becomes shallower, our muscles tense and our stomach feels tight. We feel warm as our blood pressure rises, and our digestion and intestinal processes shut down. These short-term reactions are perfectly normal and in times of real threat can be life saving. But in modern life we experience the symptoms of stress too often and for too long, and it’s not doing our bodies any good. Because stress also affects our immune system – people who experience prolonged stress suffer from more colds and viral infections. Reflexology can have a huge impact on the body’s ability to cope with stress. By entering a state of deep relaxation, the body is better able to return to a state of balance. In particular, Reflexology gently encourages better functioning of all of our bodily systems while also helping to release endorphins, our ‘feel-good’ hormones. As Reflexology relaxes the nervous system and calms the mind, it can also help us to enjoy a good nights sleep, something that so many of us struggle to achieve. This alone can do wonders for our ability to deal with the ‘ups and downs’ of life. There are numerous well-researched benefits of Reflexology but above all it is an incredibly relaxing treatment – and who doesn’t need a little more relaxation in their busy lives? Rachael Rachael is a qualified reflexologist and a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. Rachael works from the Willow Surgery in Downend and also offers home visits. Champ Lee visits Barley Close Primary WORLD champion Bristol boxer Lee Haskins came to a primary school to see how a new piece of equipment is making PE more fun for children. The former IBF bantamweight title holder visited Barley Close Primary School, which has recently installed an ActivAll Reaction Wall, a piece of electronic sports equipment that improves reactions, coordination, strength and fitness by hitting coloured pads in sequence as they are lit up. It has been bought using the school’s sports premium and health in school funding, as well as fundraising by the PTA. Head teacher Jo Williams says there has been huge interest in the wall from the pupils and they have been using it in and out of lessons. She said: “We have the board available in breakfast club, lunchtimes and during the school day, where it is used in PE lessons, to help improve the

Former IBF bantamweight world champion with Barley Close Primary School children at the official launch of its reaction wall. children’s co-ordination and for those children who just need time out of class so they can refocus on their learning. The children love it and are keen to improve their scores. “The fact a ‘real’ boxer has

come to visit us has been the icing on the cake. One child told me that it was a real honour to meet Lee and to hold his world championship belt was a dream come true for many of our children.”

The reaction wall aims to make physical activity at school fun, helping to develop children’s skills and coordination and improving their overall health and well-being in an enjoyable way. It has a scoring system which makes using it a game and motivates children to exercise. Mrs Williams said the reaction wall can be incorporated into group activities to promote teamwork and competition whilst building social relationships between children. The scoring system enables progress to be easily monitored. She added: “Many children don't enjoy traditional PE classes but Reaction Walls can help change that, engaging children who previously lacked enthusiasm for anything resembling physical activity or cardio exercise, and contributing to the recommended 60-minutes of physical activity a day that is so important.”

n MANGOTSFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Support your local clubs WE are lucky to have two highstandard sports clubs in our area: Mangotsfield United Football Club and Cleve Rugby Club. Now, it’s true to say that neither are where they would like to be in their respective league tables – perhaps they could do with more support? When was the last time you went to watch either of them? Are you a regular supporter or is it the case that you used to go but don’t seem to be able to find time now? Have you been a few times or have you never been but occasionally thought ‘I ought to go and watch them’? Well, here’s a chance to put that right. We’re having a ‘Support Your Local Club’ day. Both Mangotsfield United FC and Cleve RFC are at home on March 30. They are next door to each other in Cossham

Street, so come along and take your pick. If rugby’s your game, Cleve host Drybrook at the Hayfields, kick off 2.30pm. If you prefer football, Mangotsfield United host Bideford at the GJC Commercials Ltd Stadium, kick off 3pm. There has been football in the village since 1888 and four years later, Mangotsfield FC became a founder member of the Bristol & District League. From 1898 until the 1950s, the club was disbanded and reformed on several occasions before Mangotsfield United FC, was formed at the start of the 1951-52 season. The current season is Mangotsfield’s 19th campaign as a Southern League club and their

HAT a month we’ve had! From the blink and you miss it snow to cycling in just a T-shirt (ok it was a tad chilly, but I’m still here) it’s definitely been a lot of fun! I will say though that as the snow fell on an Eye Hospital day, whilst our three children hit the park with a toboggan at 9am, I was busy in clinic and ended up missing the fresh snow. It’s also been the launch of our new service for young eyes - Eye Gym. Well, what’s this you may ask. I’m always happy to answer questions about the day to day work we do helping our young & not so young patients see more clearly but this one’s a bit more focussed. For around fourteen years we’ve had a specialist interest in caring for those who have more difficulty than they should reading or seeing the school board, or getting headaches around their eyes. Eye Gym’s all about making the process of

understanding and then treating the problems much more accessible. The most common difficulties our patients report include words moving or blurring when trying to read, loosing their place reading from a book or from the school board and generally finding their learning time more difficult than they should. Once we’ve carried out a full vision assessment which is around an hour and includes our sophisticated eye tracking assessment, we can then explain the why of our patients’ difficulties. After this the vision training games start; one of our Vision Coaches will explain the games and our patients then go home and play them. After a few weeks they return to see us for the next set. WE flung open our doors on snow day and put on a free soft-play session for those able to make the trek to the Centre. We also welcomed a special guest, Home Secretary Sajid Javid, through the doors in early February. Our thoughts have now turned to our Annual Summer Sizzler, which will be on Saturday July 13 – we already have stalls booked in and are looking forward to a bigger and better event this year – fingers crossed the weather is good to us again. Our Lyde Green Partnership meeting took place in February and presented another opportunity to bring those with an interest in the community together. Muchneeded facilities are starting to arrive locally, with Happy Days Nursery, Sainsbury’s Local and David Lloyd set to open in late 2019/early 2020 – great news! As a small charity, we’re always looking for volunteers and will be seeking new trustees to join the team. If you’re interested in getting

Our next event will be the first Lyde Green Table Top sale on Saturday March 16 from 1pm at LGCC. Why not book a table to sell your wares (£5 for individuals, £10 for businesses). You can sell anything from your table (within the law). Coffee at Lyde will be open for refreshments Pitches are limited so get in touch to book yours at info@lydegreenca.org or via Facebook.

Economy can also choose to add a Solidarity Fund donation when they place their order. Real Economy’s Ellen Sziede said: “Through something as simple as people’s weekly shopping we aim to tackle some large issues, such as a food system that disconnects people from where their food is produced and places huge power in the hands of supermarkets, as well as growing food insecurity and social isolation in what most consider a thriving city.” Real Economy is currently looking for volunteers for a newly-established Southmead Community Garden on Thursdays. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Emersons Green Voice

I WAS delighted to make my first speech as Minister of State for Universities at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, one of our many higher education institutions helping to educate our next generation of students, continually pushing the boundaries with ground-breaking research, and working closely with businesses to create jobs and help solve some of the greatest challenges of our time. As we prepare to leave the EU, I feel it is important to set out a new vision for our future education, knowledge and skills in a postBrexit Britain. It is more important than ever that our higher education system delivers for all students, of all backgrounds and circumstances, to ensure they receive a top-quality education and a fulfilling university experience that will enrich their lives and future careers. This work will include enhancing student mental health support and improving students’ experience of healthcare and housing support.

As the new Universities Minister I am committed to ensuring our innovative higher education sector remains one that works for everyone, and one we can be proud of in generations to come. Locally, I was also delighted to visit the University of Bristol to learn more about their worldleading research and to witness first-hand how recently announced government investment is being used by the University to develop micro robotic devices that will help repair our underground pipe network. Projects like this one, at one of the key higher education institutions in our region, will help develop technologies which will deliver real-world benefits, boosting job prospects and productivity across our region. I am pleased that after a long campaign, and working locally and nationally, we have been able to secure serious investment into our High Streets, with Kingswood set to benefit from new digital training facilities for residents

and young people, as well as new street cleaning tools, and a cash boost to help stabilise our historic Tabernacle site. This investment also comes as the Chancellor recently announced a new Future High Streets Fund to invest ÂŁ675 million. Kingswood High Street is just the start and I will continue to campaign for all our local High Streets to receive support in future.

n AROUND THE WIs BEECHMERE BELLES WI FEBRUARY brought gales, rain and snow – it’s the time of year when it’s sometimes difficult to motivate ourselves to get out and about during the dark cold evenings. That’s one of the great things about being a member of a WI: looking forward to an evening with the girls, finding out new things and catching up over a cuppa. Last month we had an evening of self-defence, with a visit from Zenshindojo, who taught us some basic moves. Ninjas we are not, but we do have some ideas now on how to be aware and act if needed. At Beechmere Belles we have very talented bakers amongst us, so much so that we are swapping recipes faster than we can eat the cakes. I’ve made a lemon drizzle cake before but the one we were treated to was amazing, and put mine to shame. I might add I now have a copy and my family are very impressed. As usual we had a raffle, which this month was books, to help raise funds that help towards paying for

our speakers and materials for our craft evenings. Our committee works hard to organise meetings and events and our members always have great ideas for days out and trips. We are actually overdue an evening out; we like to support our local independent eateries, which also means none of us have to travel far and can easily car share. Next month Chris from Heavenly Hedgerows will be telling us all about foraging and preserving. Let’s be fair, we all look forward to blackberry picking: it takes us straight back to being a child again, where we ate more than we went home with and we could never figure out why our mums were so upset that a bit, or possibly a lot, of juice had got on our tops. It will be very interesting to hear about all the other wonderful things our hedgerows have to offer. If you would like to join us, to meet new people and see what a WI is all about, please join us at Emerson’s Green Village Hall the fourth Thursday of every month at

7.30pm. Hope to see you there. Beechmere Belles – Emersons Green & Lyde Green WI

MANGOTSFIELD WI THANK you to Gheeta Aheer for coming in February. Gheeta told us about Indian Cuisine and the various spices used for cooking. Emma Britton from BBC Radio Bristol will be coming along. She will be doing a talk titled ‘My Somewhat Unusual Journey Into Broadcasting. I can’t wait to meet her – I will be tweeting some pictures of the evening as it happens. You can also follow us on Twitter @mangotsfieldwi. Our meetings start at 7.30pm

New office and new staff for thriving north Bristol mortgage advice business A LOCAL mortgage advice business that is part of the Mortgage Advice Bureau network is moving to new high street premises in Downend and will add to its existing 12-strong team after outgrowing its current office in Stoke Gifford following continued business growth. The team, which offers mortgage advice in Bristol and across the South West, will relocate later this month to newly refurbished premises on Downend’s thriving high street after doubling in size over the past 12 months. Daniel Gould, Business Principal, who lives in Downend has been in the financial services industry for more than 15 years, and together with business partner Adam Wyrill also runs a successful wealth management firm. Daniel comments: “Bespoke Independent Financial Advisers has been offering Mortgage and Wealth Management Advice in the area since 2014. In 2017 we decided to specialise and separate the wealth management and mortgage businesses, in order to gain access to better mortgage deals

the mortgage business joined the Mortgage Advice Bureau network. As a local business backed by a highly respected national brand and a leading mortgage network, we not only understand the nuances of our local market, but also due to the size of our network are able to access mortgage deals not always available to other financial advisers and brokers.” The business’s rapid growth since joining the Mortgage Advice Bureau network prompted Adam and Daniel to look to open a dedicated mortgage shop and Downend was a perfect fit. Adam explains: “Most of our team live locally and having developed strong links with our customers and the local business community over the last four years we were keen to stay in the north east of Bristol. Downend high street is a popular destination partly due to the fact that local groups like Downend & Bromley Heath in Bloom make a real effort to make it look attractive. Our new office - in what was once the home of Costa Coffee and previously NatWest Bank – will feature a bright recep-

tion area and client meeting spaces and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming customers there.” The new north Bristol office can be found at 18 Badminton Road, Downend, BS16 6BQ and is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5pm. Out of hours appointments are also available from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week either at the new office or with advisers visiting clients at home. The shop will open in March 2019. Party time for parkrun

Needle holder With Liz Freke from Hattie’s Hooray’s

A POPULAR parkrun is limbering up to celebrate its fifth birthday with a roar. Pomphrey Hill Parkrun will mark its special anniversary on Saturday March 2 by hosting a zoo-themed event. Runners are encouraged to dress as a zoo animal or keeper with awards going to the best costume in both categories. There is even an award for best birthday cake plus free entry into the 5k/10k race entry raffle. The event runs from 8.30-10.30am. The weekly 5km times runs are organised by volunteers and are free, however people need to register before their first run and bring along a printed copy of their barcode to enable them to get a time. To find out more visit www.parkrun.org.uk/pomphreyhill/

Want a simple but super-useful handcrafted gift for Mum this Mother’s Day? How about this very cute needle holder, the perfect place to keep Mum’s (or your) sewing needles and pins! You will need: Piece of fabric 10cm x 22cm Piece of complementing felt 8cm x 20cm 2 more pieces of felt of your choice 7cm x 18cm Sewing needle Sewing thread in a complementing colour Sewing pins Fabric scissors Pen Iron Sewing machine Fabric glue

Fraser Allen Estate Management Professional | Sincere | Reliable

4. With your backed fabric piece on the outside, place your two pieces of felt inside (one inside the other), with all folds lined up in the centre.

1. Take your piece of fabric and with your iron, fold 0.5cm from each edge over to the wrong side and iron them pin in place.

2. Machine stitch around the outside of your rectangle to keep the hems in place. Take your large piece of felt and generously apply fabric glue to one side, now stick it to the reverse side of your fabric, to hide the raw edges. Leave to dry.

5. Now take your thread and fold it over three times, so it is triple the width. Thread your needle with this thickness and knot the end. You are now going to sew the ‘cover’ and inner felt ‘pages’ together, down the length of the spine. Firstly, use a running stitch from the top of the fold of the inner ‘pages’ to the bottom. Now go back the other way, using another running stitch to stitch in the gaps.

3. Now take your backed fabric piece and iron in half widthways. Take your two remaining pieces of felt and iron those widthways too.

6. Fasten off the ends of your thread by knotting together. You now have a lovely needle holder which can be stored safely in a sewing box or even a handbag for those emergency repairs!

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE AFTER trekking through the snow and arctic conditions I am pleased to say that all of the Cleve team made it into clinic and survived the snow day of 2019. Although it wasn’t quite as bad as last year, there was still a few slippery patches. I almost did a Gemma Collins Dancing On Ice special, but managed to save it…just about! The near miss persuaded me to stick to the comfort of my own sofa the day after, and what better excuse to stay put than watching the Six Nations Rugby. I couldn’t take my eyes off the England game, what a brilliant performance and result! England successfully made 181 tackles throughout the game with some huge hits. Although these guys are finely tuned athletes with immense strength and technique, their bodies still take a beating. One of the injuries commonly seen in rugby is concussion. This has been a hot topic in rugby over the last few years. More research has gone into detection and treatment not only in elite players, but also at grass roots level as well. Concussion is a temporary

injury to the brain following head trauma. The common symptoms can include a headache, dizziness, feeling sick, confusion, memory loss, clumsiness or trouble with balance, visual changes, sudden mood swings or having difficulty concentrating. Because of the variety of symptoms, concussion can sometimes be hard to pick up, and you don’t have to be knocked out to be concussed. Symptoms can last from minutes to days, and can even come on a while after the incident. Its not only rugby collisions that can lead to concussion. Car accidents and falls may also cause similar symptoms. So if you experience any of the above symptoms following a knock on the head it‘s important to seek medical advice, especially if they’re severe and don’t go away quickly. But this is a rare injury in day-today life, as we luckily don’t have to tackle a 20 stone international rugby player to get through the bread isle at Tesco. If you are interested in the topic, especially for those keen rugby players, coaches or parents, the RFU has a great online module called

Headcase, which provides lots of information on concussion and other related topics. Speaking of raising awareness, on the weekend I went to an amazing charity ball in aid of BUST. BUST is the Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust. It is a Bristol based charity created by former patients that supports the Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital. The funding goes towards advanced equipment such as state of the art scanners that help with the detection of breast cancer. It was a fantastic night raising money for a brilliant cause. We had a lovely three course meal, plenty of wine, fund raising events throughout the night and a brilliant band that kept us all on the dance floor. It really inspired awareness of the devastating disease and proved that we can all do our bit to help thousands of others in the future. Details of the charity can be found at www.bustbristol.co.uk. But for this weekend it’s a much quieter one for me, making sure I’ve got top spot on the sofa to watch an exciting Six Nations trip to our friends in Cardiff!

Northern Soul fundraiser raises over £500 LOVERS of northern soul music helped raise more than £500 for charity as they danced the night away at a bash in Mangotsfield. Four DJs - John Lloyd, Malcolm Beedle, Bob Bavin, Jimmy Manu and Martyn Johnson - gave their time free of charge to spin the decks at the do at Mangotsfield United Football Club. Each of the 100 plus guests was given a raffle ticket which was entered into a draw. The winner of the lucky ticket was then invited to name a charity to donate the proceeds of the evening to. Winner Brian Pike, from Longwell Green, chose Dorothy House hospice. DJ Jimmy Manu, of Kingswood, said: “It was a great night with plenty of dancing and we really appreciate all the people who turned up to support us.” The DJs were inspired to host the night following the success of their bi-monthly afternoon Splash of Soul events at Barton Hill Rugby Club in Speedwell.
