Shock road option puts family’s future on hold A FAMILY that has farmed in Siston for five generations is facing an uncertain future because of the M4 Junction 18a proposals. Edgar Webb, who is nearly 70, could have to move away from Gingells Farm, on the outskirts of Pucklechurch, where he has lived all his life, if the eastern option link from the motorway to the A4174 Avon Ring Road goes ahead. His wife Mary, in an emotional speech at a packed public meeting last month, said the proposals unveiled in early July were devastating. Either of the eastern options would mean a dual carriageway cutting right across the family’s farm. It was “a significant and catastrophic threat” to family, business, animals and lifestyle, she said. South Gloucestershire Council and Highways England are consulting on two 18a eastern options and a western option at Emersons Green. Report: Page 6

Bikes beat the viaduct blues

The number of cyclists using the Bromley Heath viaduct during the repair works is up by 31 per cent while other traffic is down. South Gloucestershire Council has thanked commuters for changing their habits, resulting in shorter jams than had been feared. Events are also being held to encourage more to use the park and ride at Lyde Green. PAGE 6

Still, if you prefer to stay dry rather than tramping through the woods in your wellies, we’ve got lots for you to read this month. Road issues still dominate, of course. The Bromley Heath viaduct works are not causing as much traffic chaos as feared, partly because many people are taking to two wheels. Good on them! Overnight working has begun, to ensure the project stays within the 33-week timeframe. Meanwhile, the discussion continues about junction 18a - consultation is still open on the eastern and western options so make sure you amake

n NEWS SWIPE-CARD technology comes to Emersons Green and Staple Hill libraries this month but its launch at Downend has been delayed. South Gloucestershire Council is reducing staffed opening hours at eight libraries initially from October 1. Users will be able to get in for 11 hours a day, seven days a week using a system known as Open Access. They will first need to receive an induction to the system at one of the libraries where it is installed. Downend was shut for two weeks to install the technology but more needs to be done. A council spokesman said: "Downend library will get Open Access technology, but this will be later in the year as the installation of the technology is more complex in that building." The council has brought in the changes in an effort to save £500,000 a year. The new system comes after a lengthy consultation, in which hundreds of people opposed reducing staffed hours. Hundreds of people signed petitions and attended protests against the library cuts. Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism, Councillor Heather Goddard,

n NEWS WHILE families up and down the country were making the most of one of the hottest August bank holidays on record, 11 cyclists from Downend were making a 100 mile ride raising money in memory of a local teenager. The sponsored cycle raised more than £13,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a charity working to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The bike ride was in memory of Downend teenager James Hedge who died in January 2016 of Diabetic Ketoacidosis following a leakage in the insulin pump he was using. He was diagnosed as Type 1 diabetic at three-years-old and died aged just 18. The riders included James’ dad, Bob, and brother Patrick, aged 15. They were joined by Jonny Davis, Adam Barber and his son Oran, Matt Condon and his son Mike, Andrew Serle and his son William as well as Nigel Hodges and Ade Pearce. The group are a mix of experienced cyclists and novices aged from 15 to 51. The cyclists set off from St

They then travelled west of Bristol, over the Avonmouth Bridge, heading south of Clevedon before returning through the centre of Bristol. Despite four punctures on the

way, every rider completed the course. Family and friends waited to cheer them home at the finish line after an afternoon of cream teas. Bob said: "James had an

October, 2017 irrepressible smile. He was a kind, gentle, patient, quietly strong and determined young man. He was also a good and loving son, brother and friend. James’ life was tragically cut short during his first year at university, which is devastating for the whole family. We are proud to have completed this ride and to have raised so much in his memory." Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening condition when the body’s own immune system attacks cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. It has a lifelong impact on those diagnosed and their families. There are currently 400,000 people in the UK with Type 1 diabetes and more than 29,000 of them are children. Sufferers endure a daily battle trying to balance the body’s sugar levels within a healthy range by controlling their diets, exercise, insulin injections (or pump monitoring), and regular daily blood testing. The effects of Type 1 diabetes can be both physical and mental, especially if blood sugar levels are too low or too

high. Jonny and Bob both have other family members living with Type 1 diabetes. Jonny’s eldest son, Thomas, 13, was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was eight. James was a role model to Thomas, offering him guidance especially in the early days of diagnosis. JDRF provides information and support to people living with Type 1 diabetes and their families. The charity is working to find a cure and ultimately eradicate it. It also funds research for new treatments so the everyday lives of patients can be improved. The St Augustine’s community in Downend has dedicated 2017 to raising money for JDRF in memory of James. Several people have taken on physical challenges including running the London Marathon and an 80m freefall abseil. Other events have included a pamper evening, quiz night, family walk and cake sales. James’ family say they are very appreciative of the love and support shown by so many.

Telling wondrous stories in wool A UNIQUE interpretation of some of the scripture tales in wool is on show this month. The Bible Yarns project was the idea of Mary Webb, who attends St Anne’s church in Syston. She has co-ordinated knitters from four churches and beyond to make hundreds of knitted figures and create scenes telling well-known stories. These will be on display during the weekend of October 14 and 15. St James Church, Mangotsfield will open its doors on Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday noon-4pm for the family friendly event. Refreshments and a children’s corner will be available a At St James Church you will be able to see the story of Jesus’ birth and can then move on to St Barnabas Church in Warmley to see the Creation, great Flood and some of the parables and miracles. St. Anne’s Church in Syston will have displays from some of the parables and miracles and at St Mary’s Church in Bitton you will be able to view stories relating to the crucifixion and resurrection. Bible Yarns will move to the Nave Aisles at Bristol Cathedral for the entire month of August 2018 when you will be able to see all the scenes again in one place. https://www.facebook.com/stjamesmangotsfield/

MPs tell Minister about M4 junction 18a MPs Luke Hall and Chris Skidmore took their battle for a motorway junction at Emersons Green to the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling. Mr Skidmore, MP for Kingswood - which includes Emersons Green - successfully lobbied for a £500,000 feasibility study into a new junction and link road on the M4 between Tormarton and Hambrook. This is being carried out by consultants CH2M on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council and Highways England. But their report surprised Mr Skidmore and Mr Hall, MP for Thornbury and Yate not to mention people living in the area, RESIDENTS have until October 16 to make their views known about a possible junction 18a on the M4 between Tormarton and Hambrook. South Gloucestershire Council and Highways England, with their consultants CH2M, have held a series of consultation sessions on their “concept” for the so-called 18a link. Supporters say it is needed to reduce congestion, improve connectivity and bring jobs. Many people moved to Emersons Green expecting that a junction would be built at some point in the future. But the introduction of the eastern options near Pucklechurch have sparked furious opposition and have led many to question whether there is a case for a junction at all. Several residents have been told during the consultation sessions that the eastern option B, which runs closest to Pucklechurch, past a number of historic buildings, is not considered viable. Campaigners are angry that it remained

particularly those in Puckechurch, Siston, Shortwood and Parkfield, by coming up with two eastern routes as well as the Emersons Green western option. The MPs are lobbying for the western option and want the eastern one dropped. Mr Skidmore said: “ I have already written to the Council stating my objections, created a petition against the option, and I will continue to raise my objections with highest levels of Government to show the strength of feeling local residents have against this proposal. Luke and I were pleased that the Transport Secretary agreed to meet us to discuss our concerns about the eastern option.”

Chris Skidmore, left, Luke Hall and Chris Grayling discuss the M4 Junction 18a

Do we need another motorway exit at all? on the consultation papers, causing misery and uncertainty for people whose homes and livelihoods are affected, yet other options were ruled out before the plans were released. Pucklechurch Parish Council and Emersons Green Town Council will be preparing their responses to the consultation early this month. Siston and Westerleigh parish councils are likely to do the same. Pucklechurch has already voted to oppose the eastern option. Emersons Green has not discussed the junction yet, as it was felt best for all councillors to have the chance to attend consultation sessions and ask questions. Pucklechurch Parish Council

organised a public meeting on September 12, which was attended by more than 200 people. Vice chairman Gail Boyle outlined the case against the two eastern options and said the council’s proposals were deeply flawed.” “South Gloucestershire Council has failed in its duty to provide accurate and detailed information from which any member of our community can make a considered comment,” she said. Among the omissions, she said, were the fact that the consultants had not been asked to consider public transport options; the existence of the crematorium had been ignored

as had the 18 footpaths and bridleways and the major cycle route affected. Parish councillor Rick Dunning said the proposal cut communities off from one another. Parkfield, with 77 homes, and Shortwood, with 91 homes, were barely visible on the council maps. Other speakers were environmental expert Jacki Berry ,village website editor Martin Smith and farmer’s wife Mary Webb, who said the route would destroy her family’s farm. Mr Smith said he had heard of people who could not sleep because of worry about the proposals. Details of the consultation are on South Glos Council website.

Park your bike and tuck 50 years of ‘missed transport opportunities’ into a bacon sandwich A CRUCIAL first step has been taken towards improving transport links for commuters in the Downend area. The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has agreed to spend £1.2m investigating the feasibility of several schemes in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. These include park and rides, cycle routes, improvements at Yate and Keynsham stations, and better links between Yate and the

Avon Ring Road along the A432 Badminton Road, including extension of MetroBus to Yate. The proposals also revive the idea of a park and ride at the top of the M32. Professor Steve West, interim chairman of the Local Enterprise Partnership, which works closely with WECA, said it would be vital to work together for the best solutions. “We can’t resolve 50 years of missed opportunities and poor thinking and planning across our city region all at once,” he said.

AN event was held at the new park and ride site in Lyde Green to encourage more commuters to use the facility. The Bromley Heath Viaduct team were on hand to give more details about the road works, the bus services that use the site and the provision available for cyclists. Dr Bike gave free bike checks. Best of all, the first 100 visitors could also enjoy a free bacon sandwich. Since the park and ride on Willowherb Road opened in July it has been practically empty on several occasions, with complaints about buses being cancelled or driving past the site without stopping. Mark King, South Gloucestershire Council’s Head of StreetCare and Transport said: “We have a fantastic park and ride facility here, and it is a shame that not many people have been using it so far. I hope that as a result of this event it will become a lot busier” Four services (X48, 10, 462 and 86) serve the park and ride.

n NEWS IT has been announced that South Gloucestershire Council have chosen Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA) as the operator of the development’s new Community Centre. The announcement comes as a result of a huge amount of work by volunteers over the past year. First, LGCA ran a survey to understand what residents wanted to see in the centre, and they visited other village halls and community centres to find out how they are run and what equipment and services are needed. The group had to then go through a selection process and submit a full business plan to South Gloucestershire Council in order to be considered as the operator. LGCA Chair Kelly Adams said: “The centre will offer a welcoming and social space in the heart of Lyde Green that can help connect the community. It will be a place for residents of all ages to come together to learn, get fit and healthy, be creative, and have fun. Local resident groups such as LGCA and Lyde

Walk on the wild side A GROUP of 16 local adults and children joined conservation educator Steve England for a free a community walk exploring nature, local history and edible wild foods in Lyde Green. Organised by South Gloucestershire Council, the free event encouraged residents to stick on their wellies and get out and explore the area where they live. Meeting outside the Taylor Wimpey office, the group enjoyed a walk along Lyde Green’s many paths and country lanes, and well behaved dogs were welcome too. One person who attended the event said: “We had a fantastic morning learning so much. Our tutor Steve England was really exciting and engaging to listen to. Thank you so much.” South Gloucestershire Councillor Colin Hunt said: “Our free nature walks give residents an opportunity to explore their new developments and local environment, while enjoying

some exercise and learning more about the area. “We want to promote sustainable travel to residents of South Gloucestershire’s new developments and we are working closely with these communities to encourage more people to take up walking, cycling and public transport.” In April this year, the four West of England councils (Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) were awarded £7 million of government funding to improve sustainable travel over three years. Part of this is being used to promoteg increased levels of physical activity through walking and cycling. Details of future events will be featured on South Gloucestershire Council’s Facebook pages: www.southglos. gov.uk/facebook or www. facebook.com/travelwestEng

DPD pledges to keep a check on driver speeds CONCERNS have been raised by Lyde Green residents over the way that DPD delivery drivers are driving through the development. The new £12m DPD depot in Lyde Green is set to create more than 100 jobs for the local area, and includes a distribution facility, offices and customer pick-up point. However, since it opened over the summer a number of people have raised concerns via the Lyde Green Local Facebook group about how fast the drivers are travelling along Jenner Boulevard and Willowherb Road. Comments that have been posted mention the drivers driving at “scary speeds”, as well as not paying attention, cutting up other road users and ignoring rights of way when there are obstructions on their side of the road. In response to the online

complaints, a spokesman for DPD told the Voice: “At DPD we take the conduct of our staff and the safety of residents and other road users very seriously indeed.

As a result, we always welcome feedback and take action where the behaviour of our staff is found to fall below our high standards.

n ON THE BEAT with PC PAUL FORTUNE

Community support is vital to help us keep everyone safe WE’D like to thank everyone who came to our recent meetings in Downend to hear what we and South Gloucestershire Council are doing to deal with anti-social behaviour in the area. Having community support is really important too. We’re very grateful to those people who have been reporting incidents and those who have volunteered to help us deliver leaflets when needed. The darker nights as we head into autumn can make it easier for would-be thieves to spot when no one is at home, so now is a good time to think about your home security. I’d recommend using timer switches set to turn lights on at dusk, as well as fitting motionsensing security lights.

Also think about all the things you keep in your shed and garage. Bicycles and power tools are valuables often stolen from outbuildings. Even ladders or hand tools could be used by a thief, so it’s important to make sure your shed, garage and gates are sturdy and secured with good quality locks. We have recently arrested two teenage boys in connection with a bicycle theft in the area. They’ve both been released under investigation. Make sure your bike is identifiable by keeping a record of the serial number and permanently marking it with your postcode - and always use a good quality lock. Other top home security tips

include: • J oin Neighbourhood Watch – it’s one of the most effective things you can do to prevent burglary • L ock up and set the alarm, if you have one, at night as well as when you go out •H ide your keys and handbag or wallet safely out of sight. Never leave your keys in the back of the door or in view of a letterbox or window If you hear a suspicious noise please do check if you feel safe to do so. If you see someone behaving suspiciously call 999 immediately, otherwise ring 101 at any time. You can find security advice, information about Neighbourhood Watch and more on our website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.

TV Professor Alice goes back to school REDMAIDS’ High School celebrated the official opening of its new assembly hall and performance space on September 7 with the help of one of its most celebrated alumnae, Professor Alice Roberts. Alice, an author, broadcaster and evolutionary biologist, showed both a personal and professional interest in the progression of her old school – Red Maids’ – which recently merged with Redland High School. Noting how evolution is key to any thriving community, she expressed genuine excitement to be present for the launch of Bristol’s newest – and oldest – girls’ school. Speaking fondly of her time at the school between 1984-1991, she said: "I'm really delighted to be helping to open Redland Hall, and to celebrate the start of a new era as these two brilliant Bristol schools come together." Headmistress Isabel Tobias thanked the many guests who had gathered to celebrate the opening saying: “A great many people have helped to make this new hall a reality. “As I discussed with the girls on our first day, we are pioneers in our own way, showing courage and determination as we lay new foundations for generations of girls to come.” Redland Hall is a brand new, purpose-built assembly and performance space, with further classrooms, music rooms, offices and a modern exhibition space. It replaces the 1970s-built Denmark Hall, which had already been earmarked for

redevelopment before the merger and to which supporters of the school donated hundreds of thousands of pounds towards the rebuilding cost. Whilst the celebrations today took place in Redland Hall, they commemorate a number of remarkable developments at the school over the past year. These include the opening of new classrooms and an adventure playground at Redmaids’ High Infant & Junior School and the recently announced purchase of the 16acre Cribbs Sports & Social | Club.

Meet Downend School's new head

Tell us about yourself I have come here from The Castle School in Thornbury, another school in the CSET trust. I worked there for 19 years, most recently as deputy head. I was an English teacher and then an advanced skills teacher, working with many schools in South Gloucestershire, before becoming assistant and then deputy. What are your first impressions of Downend School? I was fortunate to be able to spend time here in the summer term, working with the outgoing head Mark Fuller to ensure a seamless transition. I was immediately struck by what a happy school it was, and that impression has deepened. I am impressed by the dedication of the staff, the excellent pastoral care and - most of all - by the students. They are keen, ready to learn and proud of their school. What are your ambitions for the school? Downend had its best ever GCSE results this

year, with 63 per cent of students achieving a grade 4 or above in the new English and maths exams. I have a clear idea of how to build on the successes, and of what needs to improve to meet the challenges ahead. I want to continue to raise students’ aspirations and confidence, and ensure everyone is supported and challenged so they can flourish. What are the challenges you face? Like all schools, we have to cope with a new curriculum, a new grading system and immense pressure on funding. It is unprecedented, and means we must be as creative as possible, and look at everything we do and question its impact and effectiveness. Being part of the trust is a big help, as we can work collaboratively and support one another. What's the plan for your first 100 days? We have a school improvement plan for the whole year, with a clear vision and priorities for all staff to follow. It is constantly under review to ensure we are effective and efficient.

Robot visitor surprises students A FULL-SIZE working model of Star Wars’s R2D2 visited students at King’s Oak Academy. Built by Paul Felski, the husband of Julie Felski, head of Hercules House at King’s Oak, R2D2 was a surprise visitor at an assembly for 170 students aged 11 to 16. It took Paul more than nine years to build the robot, with contributions from King’s Oak Design and Technology department Designed from scratch, the robot is made from wood, aluminium, acrylic, different types of plastic, is radio controlled and plays the Star Wars music. It is powered by rechargeable batteries installed in the head and body. This is not Paul’s first foray into robot building. Paul has also built B9 from Lost in Space; he is 7ft tall, is interactive and speaks. Paul and Julie exhibit him at Comic Cons around the country. Julie said, “This was a brilliant event for our students; it proves that if you set your mind on something you can achieve it with hard work and persistence. I hope our students will be inspired.”

PEOPLE living in Lyde Green have voiced their frustrations with deliveries by courier company Hermes. The Lyde Green Local Facebook group is filled with complaints from residents of delivery cards not being put through letterboxes or not containing details of where parcels have been left, and parcels being delivered to houses on completely different roads. One resident in particular, Emma Leach, has had several issues with Hermes deliveries during her time living in Lyde Green She told the Voice: “The first issue I had was about nine months ago with an online baby boutique. I had a card through the letterbox to say that my item had been delivered to a neighbour by Hermes as I was not in. I went to the number stated on the card but my neighbour had not received it – I then knocked on all my neighbours’ doors that evening in case of a mistake with the number, but no one had it. “I complained to the company I had purchased from and eventually after a couple of weeks of going back and forth with Hermes they decided to refund me. Fast forward four or five weeks and one day my parcel was left on my front step without any indication of where it had come from. “A few weeks later I received two parcels from Hermes that should have been delivered to a neighbour, one from ASOS and one from John Lewis. The road name on the parcels was Lupin Close and I live on Lilac Drive!

Delivery misery for Lyde Green residents I wasn’t sure where that road was and being heavily pregnant I wasn’t prepared to go out searching as I’m not the one being paid to do the deliveries. Luckily, I found the girl whose parcels they were on the Lyde Green Facebook page and arranged for her to come and pick them up. “Most recently, I bought a staircase from Aldi. The majority of the order was delivered by Yodel and the last item was delivered by Hermes. I had an email yet again to say it had been delivered and signed for by customer, but as I’d been in all day with the baby I knew something had gone wrong as I hadn’t signed for anything. I figured that once again Hermes had probably made an error with the address and went on the Lyde Green Facebook page to try and locate it. Luckily the lady who had my parcel saw my post, and I had to go and retrieve it from Lupin Close – Hermes had made the same mistake again! “There have been so many mistakes made by Hermes with their deliveries that it’s ridiculous - you only need to look at all the stories on the Lyde Green Facebook page. I’m so fed up of it, that now I won’t purchase from online retailers that use them, and I do a lot of online shopping!”

Emma Leach is one of a number of unhappy residents In response to the complaints that have been made by Lyde Green residents, a Hermes spokesman told the Voice: “We deliver 295m parcels across the UK each year and the vast majority are delivered on

time and without any problems. “We cannot comment on individual cases without receiving the specific details, however we will continue to monitor deliveries in this area.”

Discover the treasures on our doorstep Secret gems in hometowns are often hidden beneath endless dreams of faraway lands, says travel blogger Justine Cross. She believes we lose the urgency to explore where we live, simply because we know our way around. We don't look up and admire the landmarks on our doorstep. This is her tale of uncovering some OF Bristol’s secrets, five years after moving here … MY journey begins at the Harbourside. In itself, many visitors to Bristol would have made the Harbourside one of their first destinations to see. Yet, how many of us can say we’ve really stopped to look and admire it? One wrong turning finds me gazing into the eyes of a Vermeer masterpiece: Girl with a Pearl Earring. But wait, this masterpiece isn’t made from oil paints. Her earring isn’t a pearl. Instead, I find myself drawn to a security alarm system as her earring. This is a street art version of Vermeer’s work, but a masterpiece all the same. I catch myself wondering: Who’s the artist? How long has

this been here waiting to be discovered? I continue to follow the River Avon. Along the way, I see major highlights including the SS Great Britain and the bright houses gazing down on Baltic Wharf. I stop to admire the rainbow-coloured windsurfers and the paddleboarders with dogs balancing on the front. By spending some time to walk the length of the harbour, I see so much beauty in my surroundings: the known and the unknown. And then I reach Perrett’s Park: a small park space near Wells Road. At first glance, I notice the impressive views across Bristol’s

floor, red booths and Elvis playing in the background. After even just a few moments inside The Tube Diner bus, I find myself in a magical time warp. Throughout all my years of living in Bristol, if I'd only stopped racing around and instead, took the time to look at the city from a fresh pair of eyes - a tourist’s eyes - then I may just have uncovered these secrets sooner.H Justine Cross is a travel writer and business blogger based in Emersons Green. www.wandereroftheworld. co.uk. skyline. My fingers inch towards my camera. Through it, I spot the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in the distance. Quite simply, I’m now seeing a totally different angle of the City of Bristol. My journey ends along Bath Road. Facing me is a large silver treasure: The Tube Diner. As I make my food order, I spot the American school bus behind me. This time, I find myself wondering: What could possibly be in there? As I climb the steps onto the bus, I’m amazed. I’ve stumbled across one of the most spectacular secrets of Bristol: a retro diner, complete with black and white chequered linoleum

n IT HOME HELP

Russell Isaac offers IT support

Russell Isaac owns Easy PC, a friendly personal, one-toone computer coaching service in clients’ homes in the Downend, Mangotsfield, Staple Hill and Kingswood areas. With over 20 years IT experience in a wealth of different areas, he helps users, particularly older people, get what they want from from their PCs, tablets and smartphones. He is also a web designer/builder, photographer, father of two and keen sportsman. THIS generation of parents is the first to face the challenge of helping our children make the most of their online “virtual space” while keeping them safe in it. If you’re still coming to terms with “virtual parenting”, here's a few tips to help keep your child’s online experience positive. 1. Become a net-savvy parent The best safeguard against online dangers is being informed. Learn the basics of the Internet - read articles, talk to other parents. 2. "Chat" with your kids Develop an open dialogue so that you can talk with your kids about the benefits and dangers of the Internet. Cultivate an interest in their online activities. And don’t be afraid to ask your children who they are talking to online and what

they are talking about. 3. Agree on a game plan Formally agree your family’s guidelines for using the Internet. Write them up. Post them near the family computer as a reminder. 4. Protect your computer Take advantage of the software that exists to help parents manage their children’s computer experience. In only a few minutes set-up, a host of easy-to-use parental control software programs can block inappropriate websites, restrict the amount of time that your kids use the Internet and monitor their Messenger chats to protect against predators. 5. Explore the Internet as a family With a game plan and a protected computer, you can encourage

your family to take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer. Take a genuine interest in what your kids are doing and stay engaged with them online. Sometimes, with younger children, it makes sense to set up accounts on social media alongside your kids and be “friends” with them online so you can gently keep an eye on content without interfering. Appeal for reading volunteers A PROJECT in which retired people go into schools to support children with reading is looking for more volunteers in Downend, Emersons Green and Staple Hill. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) helps pupils become fluent and confident readers and also make reading fun. The organisation, which is part of the national charity Volunteering Matters and specialises in volunteering for those aged 50 plus, is already working in South Gloucestershire, including at Blackhorse Primary in Emersons Green, and would like to put volunteers into more schools. It is also active in schools in Bristol, Bath and North Somerset, To find out more look at www. rsvp-west.org.uk , contact joan. whitehead@rsvp-west.org.uk or phone 01225 314860.

More than 6,000 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge in South Gloucestershire Libraries. Emersons Green Councillor Rachael Hunt, the vice chair of the council, said the Animal Agents scheme had been a great success.

Cllr Hunt said: “Children’s reading can often dip during the long school holidays, but taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge helps them to develop their reading skills and confidence, so they return to school ready to learn."

n MESSAGE FROM OUR LOCAL MP

Government investment in our area will bring more jobs I WANT to take this opportunity to update local residents on some announcements the Government recently made benefiting our area. Following a meeting with Secretary of State Sajid Javid last year, I am pleased the University of Bath has now received significant Government investment to develop the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems at the Science Park in Emersons Green. The centre will support around 1,900 new highly productive jobs in the UK, many of which will be based in Emersons Green, and will place the area at the heart of the automotive sector. Our area is also benefiting from a recent Government investment of £3.9m million in a scheme to help improve the skills and opportunities of up to 3,000 adults. The new system will support

some residents in low paid jobs to achieve in-work progression through tailored interventions and actions such as diagnostic assessment, action planning, training, and support to move jobs. These announcements show the considerable investment the Government is making in to our area and, as the local MP, I will always fight to secure the jobs and investment that our area deserves. Finally, I wanted to inform residents that South Gloucestershire Council’s public consultation for a potential M4 Link Road at Emersons Green is live and will run until Monday October 16. n AROUND THE WIs MANGOTSFIELD WI

SEPTEMBER'S was certainly a topical meeting. We are very lucky to have a diverse programme of events through the year - from dancing to saving lives we manage to cover all aspects of WI life and beyond. Being part of Mangotsfield WI is whatever you want it to be. You can put in as much as you choose, nothing is obligatory and you can turn up to any meeting throughout the year. From time to time you may be asked to help in the kitchen but otherwise you can take from it what you need. There are numerous clubs and groups that run, you may want to join the Craft Club, Book Club, Supper club… So here we are back to the October Annual Meeting. This meeting is a formal evening where we cover the ‘business’ of being in WI. We welcome our committee for the forthcoming year – some returners and some newbies. We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors, you can find out more out our meetings by contacting: mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com or looking at our website: www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk you can also follow us on Twitter @ mangotsfieldwi or you can check out our Facebook page. Kate Tarr

DOWNEND WI HELLO, our August meeting saw Lincombe Barn Camera Club return to announce the winners and award prizes for our photo competition and give us a critique on the photos taken in July. The overall winner was Pippa, who took a beautiful photo of Christ Church. The remainder of the meeting brought out the competitiveness of our members with our annual quiz, where wine, soft drinks and nibbles were enjoyed by all. September sees a learning experience for all, with demonstrations including bike maintenance, chutney making, quilting and beauty. Our members will also be bringing in the Twiddle Muffs they have been busily knitting over the last few months and our members will chose a local care home for them to be donated to. October will be our AGM, followed by “Wine Tasting with a

Difference”, where we will learn how the taste of wine can vary when eaten with different foods. I’m fairly certain that no spit buckets will be involved! New members and guests are always welcome; we meet at 7.30pm on the last Tuesday of each month in Christchurch Hall. Julie BEECHMERE BELLES WI AS we settle into Autumn the Beechmere Belles have been

enjoying trips to the cinema, planning Theatre visits and looking forward to the season of celebrations. Recent meetings jave seen us enjoy an invigorating introduction to Nordic Walking in August whilst our September meeting saw us welcoming the Portishead Lifeboat Station who came to give us an entertaining history of the Lifeboat station, its origins and work. Looking ahead to October, we will be celebrating our 3rd birthday at our AGM - we would love as many members and new faces as possible to join us for cake and more. Our Christmas Curry plans are already under way, as is our calendar of interesting meetings for the New Year. If you haven't visited us before, the next few meetings would be an ideal opportunity to pay us a free visit ready for the new annual membership cycle in January. We are a friendly, welcoming and

diverse mix of ladies and we are always happy to make new friends! Genevieve Whittle Ford President BROMLEY HEATH WI WE started our September meeting with the presentation of a cheque for £2374.15 to Survive, a local charity that supports victims of domestic abuse. The cheque was accepted from our president Cheryl

Benson, by Sarah on behalf of Survive. . If you would like to find out more or make a donation to Survive, then please go to their website: www.survivedv.org.uk The ladies of the Bromley Heath WI allotment have been busy nurturing some tasty fruit and vegetables on their plot in Downend. This month they brought along some of their delicious, fresh produce for us to buy, raising funds for our new charity, the Jessie May Trust. Instead of an activity, this month we had a speaker. Marion Blackburn shared her expert knowledge of the “inhabitants” of Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol. Marion took up a volunteer role at the cemetery after retiring from a career as a teacher. She explained that Arnos Vale Cemetery was designed as a garden cemetery in the style of a Greek necropolis, an alternative to the overcrowded church graveyards of Bristol. It opened in 1837, however the first burial did not take place until 1839 due to a disagreement between the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the Bishop of Gloucester! Arnos Vale was not a place for ordinary folk to be buried, as the cost of a plot was way beyond the budget of many. Marion named several notable Bristolians who are buried there including Mary Carpenter, local educational and social reformer, who died in 1877. In total, more than 300,000 people have been buried there. During the 20th century the cemetery became neglected and overgrown. The owners planned to remove the bodies buried there, so that they could build housing. Local campaigners fought to save this historic site and it is now Grade II listed and run as a charitable trust. : https://arnosvale.org.uk Diane Flower

Badminton Road Methodist Church reopens THE ambitious revamp of Badminton Road Methodist Church is complete and the church is set to reopen on October 15. Services have been taking place in the annexe while the work has been carried out to create a modern and welcoming space for the community and a dedicated church area. The Minister, the Rev Pearl Luxon, said the upgrading the refurbishment of the 1960s building had taken nearly a year - but the completion of the work was only the start.

“We are ready to share this wonderful new building with the community. Our Creations Project is ready for the next phase,” she said. “This project has always had the aim of building community and caring for it in new and better ways. So we are looking carefully at ways in which we can

serve and be used for the benefit of a wide range of different groups who need to meet or to come and chat and find friends.” All are welcome to the rededication and reopening on October 15 at 3pm, which will be followed by a tea. If you would like to book the premises or talk about their use,

call Pearl on 0117 907 5933 . or to book rooms email maureen. gobbett@btinternet.com Details of Messy Space sessions and the Wednesday cafe are on the church’s Facebook page. An exhibition of church's history is open Mon Oct 16 to Friday 20 10am to noon except Wed when it’s 3.30-5.30pm.

Based at the University of Bristol, the programme has been tracking the health and development of more than 14,000 families for more than 25 years. Almost 4,000 young people have taken part in the latest stage of the research, called Focus@24+, volunteering for a series of cutting-edge tests, including blood pressure, liver and lung function checks. Since we featured Children of the 90s in our September edition, a further 146 participants have booked or attended a Focus@24+ appointment – many of them saying that it was the Voice article which prompted them to get in touch. Children of the 90s studies families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992. It’s also known as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, and is followed by scientists all over the world. Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity, and dementia. Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation. The team at Children of the 90s have opened clinic appointments throughout October, including in the evenings and at weekends. There are also new, shorter, two hour appointments available. Don’t be embarrassed – let’s talk about women’s health SPIRE Bristol Hospital is to host women’s health information evenings this coming October in a bid to dispel myths and enlighten individuals of treatment options available to them right here in Bristol. It’s the 21st Century and many people in the UK would consider themselves unshockable - so why are we all so reluctant to discuss health issues such as gynaecological cancers, breast cancer and ‘embarrassing’ issues such as incontinence? Here at Spire Bristol Hospital we recognise that talking about women’s health is the first step to changing and saving lives. Consultant Gynaecologist Miss Sanchita Sen and Consultant Breast Surgeon Mr Simon Cawthorn of Spire Bristol Hospital are calling on women to overcome any embarrassment about their breasts, gynaecological organs or other body parts and discuss any issues relating to them which otherwise are often seen as a taboo! National health campaigns including Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month in September,

and Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October help to raise general awareness. However Mr Cawthorn spoke to us and explained why talking openly about women’s health is an important first step to treatment success. “Women’s cancers can affect all ages and can often present with hidden symptoms. It is crucial to talk frankly about any symptoms to help with early detection. “Statistics show that with increased awareness and through high-profile media campaigns we can influence the behaviour of women across the UK. We need to ensure that every woman knows how to carry out effective self-check procedures and, just as importantly, what to do if you think something is wrong.” Figures from Breast Cancer Care UK show that almost 9 in 10 (87%) women diagnosed with breast cancer in England and Wales survive for five years or more while an estimated 78% survive for 10 years or more. “We are winning the battle but the fight must go on. Let’s talk!” concludes Mr Cawthorn.

And it is not just cancer. There are many women’s health topics, which we deem too ‘embarrassing’ to discuss. Gynecological Specialist Miss Sen echo’s Mr Cawthorn’s comments and stresses the importance of getting to know our bodies. “The lack of basic knowledge about the female body and understanding of female physiological functions, is extremely worrying – how can we expect women to know what to look out for in terms of unexpected changes in their vagina or vulva and to be aware of important signs and symptoms, if they’re not aware of how they should normally look and function. “I am not expecting people to have a vast medical knowledge but it really is worth taking time to find out what is healthy and what should be checked out by a GP. Hopefully by talking about it we can bring these issues into the open and help women – and their partners – to discuss the subject openly.” This October Spire Bristol Hospital is promoting the

awareness of Women’s Health. Subsequently they have announced a number of FREE patient information evenings. Mr Simon Cawthorn and Specialist Breast Care Nurse, Jackie Skinner will be hosting a Breast Awareness evening on Wednesday 25th October from 7.00pm at Spire Oncology Centre, Aztec West. This will allow women to discuss breast care and gain a first-hand understanding on what signs and symptoms to look out for. In addition to this Miss Sen and Spire Bristol Hospital’s specialist women’s health Physiotherapist will be hosting an evening on Tuesday 31st October from 7.00pm at Spire Bristol Hospital to talk about issues surrounding a lady’s pelvic floor, which includes incontinence issues, prolapse and childbirth issues such as episiotomy breakdown. This second event will take place at the Spire Oncology Centre, Aztec West, Bristol. If you’re interested in attending either of these events then please do not hesitate to contact Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email the team on info@spirebristol.com.

Season of conkers and campfires Mud pie explorers with Nickie Corr HURRAH! Autumn is here. For us it is, without question, the most exciting time of the year to be teaching children outdoors. The woods are simply bursting with learning opportunities and look their most spectacular during October and November. We also have Apple Day, Halloween/ Samhain and Bonfire Night to look forward to before the countdown to Christmas! Autumn is a perfect time for a family walk down at your local woodland or park. You can keep children occupied with very simple equipment like a pot for collecting bugs/ acorns/ different coloured leaves or some double sided tape to turn a dry stick into a work of art. Collected items can be taken home

to make collages, crowns, prints, clay models or rubbings. A flask of hot chocolate for the journey back would make you very popular! When we take children into the woods during autumn we spend time noticing the changes to the plants and trees. We also spend more time around the campfire storytelling and enjoying warm

food. But our favourite activities in the autumn are: • Playing conkers •M aking toffee apples over the campfire • Making apple head puppets • Pumpkin carving •P ainting with mud and berry paint • Looking up at the stars

These activities are all heaps of fun while sneakily teaching children valuable skills and knowledge about the natural environment. Sshh, don’t tell them! We have exciting events taking place at Lincombe Barn Woods during Oct half term and have a couple of spaces at Forest School. To book visit www.mud-pies.co.uk.

n VETS’ ADVICE FOR the last few years we have been enjoying hot Septembers, however, our canine friends can be more prone to skin allergies at this time. A skin allergy occurs when the body’s immune system over reacts to normal allergens that exist in the environment or in the food. Environmental allergens can be due to a particular pollen, tree or grass which may be seasonal or allergens which are present throughout the year such as dust mites and flea saliva. The most common sign of a skin allergy in your dog is itching (scratching or licking) or shaking their head. The areas most commonly affected are often the ears, feet and the skin over belly or armpits. There are many causes of itchy skin for dogs (such as parasites like fleas and mites and certain skin infections). Which is why there is not a single test which definitively diagnoses a skin allergy. As well as taking a thorough history and performing a clinical examination of your dog, vets will often need to perform some simple skin tests to identify rule out other

Skin allergies in dogs causes. Diet trials & blood tests can also be used to help support a diagnosis. There are several treatment options for skin allergies but it is important to be aware that it is unlikely your dog will ever be cured and they will probably need lifelong management depending on what the trigger is. Some options: Avoidance/reduction of the allergen – • Regular flea treatments for your

dog • Wash off your dogs’ feet after a walk • Trial a specific diet depending on the allergen involved • Treating the house for dust mites Medical therapy – there are many medications, shampoos and creams that can be prescribed to help control the itching as well as treat secondary bacterial & yeast infections. Immunotherapy – If specific allergens are identified, injections

containing low amounts of these can be tailored for your dog. These injections work by trying to reduce your dog’s reaction to the allergen by encouraging the body to recognise them as normal The best course of treatment is often the one tailored to your individual dog’s allergy & lifestyle. Smart new kit for Emersons Green under 14s THESE young footballers look ready for a great season in their smart new kit. The girls, from Emersons Green JFC under 14s, were given the kit by Andrews estate agents in Downend as part of a sponsorship deal for the 20172018 season. Coach Andy Wright, who runs the team with James Sheedy, said the deal means a lot to the club. He said: "Girl’s football is one of the fastest growing sports following the recent success of the national team and the TV coverage this gets and by arranging these types of sponsorship arrangements we are able to keep the costs down to our club members in the hope of attracting new players to the game. "I believe that the benefits of team sports truly benefit young children as it helps with their physical and social development. Our club is run by a dedicated band of volunteers but with soaring running costs sponsorship deals like this ensure that playing football is one of the best value for money activities for youngsters." Emersons Green JFC were formed in September 2014 with just three teams. Andy said: "We are entering the new season now with 14 teams which is testament to the commitment of the coaches and committee. Having entered six teams in the Bristol Girls League this season this makes us the fastest growing girls club in the Bristol area and only one other club has entered more teams in the Girls league.

"We are determined to continue this growth and are recruiting girls from six to eightyears-old to prepare them for the future. It is our intention, as the girls continue through the ages, that we will take them through to women’s football." The club is keen to recruit more girls to its under 14s team. Any girls in school Years 8 or 9 who are interested in joining are welcome to come along and try out on Wednesdays at 6pm at Walker Playing Fields. Andy said: "We have an excellent facility at Walker Playing Fields and have plans to develop the site in the very new future where we plan to make our social club an important venue for the community and for players' families to come and

relax." The club is also interested in recruiting girls and boys from six to 15-years-old. Anyone interested should

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

500 years since the Reformation What was it and why does it matter? ON the 31st October 1517 a German Monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses (statements for debate) to a church door in Wittenburg, Germany. What followed brought about a reforming of the church, or we might say a re-turning to what the church once was and taught. At the heart of the Reformation were two questions: ‘Who has the final authority?’ and, ‘How are we made right with God?’ These questions are as relevant and vital to us today as they were 500 years ago. Luther wrestled to find peace with God. He became a Monk and in his monastery, began to read the Bible (an activity then deemed only suitable for priests etc). His reading convinced him

that the Bible, being the word of God, instructed mankind directly. This was revolutionary because the Pope was said to be the highest authority. This power was abused to help fund the building of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome through the Pope’s authorisation of the selling of indulgencies. By payment of a sum, one could purchase a ‘get out of purgatory card’! His new understanding of the Bible and its authority then led Luther to his joyful discovery that peace with God was not something that anyone could earn but only something that God could give. No human being could, on God’s behalf, grant forgiveness of sin to another. No human being could merit God’s forgiveness – no matter what penance they performed or what they bought from the church. God gave. Luther was declared a heretic and ordered by the Pope to recant. He refused. The Emperor then declared him an outlaw and

tried to stop the distribution and reading of his writings. Luther was rescued and taken into hiding where he worked on translating the Bible from Latin to German for all to read for themselves. This spread through the then new technology of the printing press. God has given his word to mankind that we might truly know him and how we ought to respond to him. So, we give thanks for those like Luther who have translated and upheld the Bible’s teaching throughout the centuries. And, God has given his Son as the way we can have peace with him now and forever. Jesus’ death and resurrection achieved our means of forgiveness and belonging to God. We receive Christ and forgiveness by the grace of God and through faith alone. We read, we believe, we receive. It really is good news! If you would like a copy of the Bible or to know more about peace with God through Jesus Christ, please get in touch and we will be delighted to help you.

Trick or Treat bag Trick or Treat! With Halloween just around the corner, why not create this ghoulishly great trick or treat bag – perfect for your little monsters! You will need: 2 pieces of orange fabric each measuring 21cms x 27cms 2 pieces of orange fabric each measuring 6cms x 30cms Orange cotton Fabric Scissors Iron

Pins Pinking Shears Ruler Pen/pencil Oddments of felt/embellishments

1. Take one of the long thin pieces of fabric and fold in half along the length – sew in place. Now repeat with the other piece of long thin fabric. Turn right side out (a knitting needle is a great tool for this!) and iron flat so that the seam runs along one edge. Repeat for both – these are your straps.

3. Taking the fold you have created in one piece of fabric, fold the raw edge in underneath itself all along the edge and pin in place. Now take one strap and fold it underneath the seam you have just pinned in place, 4cms from the edge of the bag. Repeat on the opposite side of the bag.

2. Now take one of the larger pieces of fabric and fold over 2cms along a short edge – iron in place. Repeat with the remaining piece of fabric.

4. Now repeat with the other piece of bag and strap fabric.

5. Sew the seams in place so that they enclose the straps.

7. Sew in place and neaten the raw edges with pinking shears, also tying off any loose threads.

6. Next, place both sides of the bag right sides together and pin in place around each side and bottom of the bag.

8. Turn right side out and press the bag and handles. You are now ready to decorate your bag! We have used felt to create a spooky pumpkin face. Why not add initials to personalise your bag, or create in ghostly white or black and add a white stitched spider’s web? Have fun and Happy Halloween!

n PETER'S VISION

Time to celebrate! I HOPE you have been able to enjoy the early autumn harvests as we have. We had a particularly good damson and apple crop this year. Enjoying the fruits of our labour is always nice. However, the credit for selecting, planting, nurturing & cultivating the fruit trees, goes entirely to someone else! I will add that I have pruned the odd branch off here and there as I feel I should every autumn, so we have laboured a little before the harvest! It was nice to be able to share our crop with Dad, who as usual had planted a veg patch large enough for us all to share! This month at Turners Opticians we have had a double celebration. Both Nikki and Zoë joined us 10 years ago! The time has, as it often does, flown by. It was lovely to hear Nikki saying only the other day how much she enjoys working at Turners Opticians. We had an enjoyable meal out to celebrate, not that we need an excuse to head out for a bite to eat after work, but

it was lovely as a team to thank them on behalf of our patients for the care, attention and dedication both Nikki and Zoë bring to work. Over dinner Zoë said how she has loved being part of the Turners team, especially enjoying getting to know so many of our patients and seeing you year after year. So many of us have benefitted from their labour! As autumn sets in, I have put away my summer mirror tint sunglasses and returned to my trusty polaroid’s when driving and cycling. The added glare the seasonal lowering of the sun in the sky brings is greatly offset by these super lenses. With a choice of three tint colours and far or near single focus lenses as well as multifocal options there is a lens in our collection for everyone! The frame collection you can choose from has multiplied again. It’s best not to look away for too long in our practice or suddenly you have two new collections to

From Mangotsfield to Anfield NICK Tanner, who started out at Mangotsfield United before going on to make 59 top-flight appearances for Liverpool, returned to his former club to launch his book about his colourful footballing career. His manager for much of his time at Anfield, Graeme Souness, now a Sky Sports football pundit, joined him at Cossham Street Graeme Souness with Nick Tanner at Cossham Street before the charity night, left. Below, Ex Mangos Gary Penrice, Phil Purnell and Dean Radford at the book launch

for the event, which was also a fund-raising event for Prostate Cancer UK. Nick, who co-wrote his book - entitled From a field to Anfield - with sports journalist Steve Cotton, said: "It is fantastic to have Graeme here. He was a great player and would get into anyone's top team and as a manager he brought on young players like me. I tried to do the same when I came back to Mangotsfield as manager."

Favourite Also at the event was Phil Purnell, who became friends with Nick when they were at The Ridings School in the 1970s; Gary Penrice, who played with the pair at Mangotsfield and then at Bristol Rovers, and another former Cossham Street favourite who went on to play professionally, Dean Radford. Nick's book is an entertaining tale of his journey from the Western League via the Third Division and the First Division to playing European football. He remains the only footballer to have scored in both the Bristol and the Merseyside derby matches.

He wore the number 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 shirts in his time - definitely a utility player! Nick moved to Anfield for £20,000 in 1988 but played in the first team only once in his first season. A fter going on loan to Norwich, he returned to Liverpool in time to be part of the squad at Hillsborough when the disaster happened. One memorable match was the FA Cup in 1992, when Liverpool were held to a draw by Bristol Rovers but went through 2-1 in the replay. Nick, who went on to manage non league teams for ten years after his playiing career ended, is a supporter of Prostate Cancer UK after losing his father Dennis to the disease. He took part in Sky television presenter Jeff Stelling's March for Men sponsored walk for the charity in 2017.

Wins 'just around the corner' for Mangos MANGOTSFIELD United will be hoping October sees a change in ther fortunes after a terrible start to the season. They have lost five of their first seven league games and are close to the bottom of the Evo Stik Southern League South with just four points. They have also been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup in the first rounds. Their only victory came on August 26 when they beat Bishops Cleeve 2-0 at Cossham Street under caretaker manager and goalkeeping legend Steve Phillips, who took charge after the resignation of David Mehew. Phillips has since left the club to take up a full-time coaching position at League Two cloub Yeovil Town and Mangos have signed 19-year-old Dutch goalie Thom Jonkerman on a month’s loan from Bristol Rovers. Meanwhile, the new team of manager Wayne Thorne and assistant David Seal (pictured) - both former Mangotsfield players - have promised more changes after starting their reign with four straight defeats against Swindon Supermarine, Bristol Manor Farm and Winchester City in the league and Cinderford Town in the cup.

To add to their woes, the team bus did not show up for the trip to Winchester, meaning makeshift journeys by car for all. Before that game, Thorne told the club’s website that everyone was now playing for their place and needed to turn positive performances into victories. He has already made some signings and more are expected. “Players have been playing in their comfort zone at the club and the honeymoon period is now over. “We have to work harder and concentrate for the full 90 minutes in games, especially on our travels.

Barry's right on cue to help Jessie May WORLD Snooker chairman Barry Hearn has been announced as the latest patron for Kingswood-based charity Jessie May. After learning about the work of the charity and its nurses when World Snooker partnered Jessie May for the 2016/2017 snooker season, Barry decided to take the relationship further and become an official patron. Jessie May, a hospice at home charity which cares for terminally ill children in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, needs to raise around £1,400,000 every year to continue supporting children and their families. As a patron Barry will help raise awareness for the cause as well as vital funds. He will also support charity events with the first being An Evening with Steve Davis and Barry Hearn on Thursday October 19 at Ashton

Snooker which has been massively beneficial for us in the past year, both in terms of awareness and funds. “Barry also took the time to visit nurses and families and find out more about Jessie May’s work, which was greatly appreciated. “I don’t think we realised how big the response Snooker's Steve Davis and Barry Hearn to our partnership with World Snooker Gate Stadium. The event will be would be. This evening is not just for snooker or sports fans but business people, Jessie May supporters and anyone looking for a good night out!” Barry Hearn said: “I am thrilled and honoured to have been asked to become a patron of Jessie May. “Having met the nurses and seen them in action, I know the difficult job they do is done with such commitment and passion." Jessie May is caring for 125 terminally ill children in the South West and a further 47 bereaved families. n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Storms, shocks and blows to the head

Blog 44 – Michael Jordan talks Chiropractic and Shockwave Therapy

AFTER the Chiropractic success of working at the World Athletics Championships in August, Tim has passed the baton on to me for this month’s blog. While Tim is sunbathing in the south of France, enjoying a wellearned break with his family, I was amongst the thunder and lightning of Maidenhead with Cleve RFC as they were playing in their first away match of the season. Despite the narrow defeat, the ongoing dispute over head injuries continued as I had yet another concussion to assess amongst the squad. Loss of memory, blurred vision, nausea and altered balance are amongst the main signs of concussion which is now being watched closely by most governing bodies in sport. I asked the routine medical questions to the player after the match and cleared him for training next week. However, overlooked concussions can have a detrimental effect to someone’s mental health and it applies to people off the rugby field too. We’ve had patients in the clinic who have had nasty falls and as part of their assessment I’ll always check for signs of concussion. While on the subject of sport, I recently treated a good friend of mine who’s now a professional rugby player. He came to me at the clinic back in June complaining of back pain following a muscle sprain. That sounded simple

enough but the catch was the 2 month deadline we had, as his pre-season training started at the beginning of August and there was no chance he was missing the first game of the season (his words not mine). Massage and rest hadn’t quite accelerated the healing process as he’d hoped. After assessing him, it became clear that his hip wasn’t moving fully which contributed to his muscular tightness. After just over a month’s treatment including manipulation, acupuncture and ultrasound, Jacob was back in training and I sat on the sofa on Saturday night watching him on Sky Sports, surreal! So we had two new additions to the clinic this month. Firstly I should mention our new Chiropractor Jack Withey, who’s started this month after graduating as Valedictorian of his year (for those of us not educated in Latin, that means he graduated top of his class!) Both Jack and I were inspired to become a chiropractor after completing a week’s work experience with Tim and 5 years after our A-level we graduated with a Masters in chiropractic and were lucky enough to be offered 2 of the most coveted chiropractic jobs in the country back home, here at Cleve Chiropractic. Secondly we added shockwave therapy to our clinical toolbox at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step. It’s been working wonders on our patients with conditions such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis and achilles problems that won't go away. Shockwave is used regularly

by all of the Premier league football and rugby teams and is widespread throughout elite sport medicine. It is well known for its use in breaking down gallstones and kidney stones within the NHS. It has now been proven to fix 90% of conditions such plantar fasciitis and is on the NICE guidelines for such conditions but is not widely available on the NHS. Without boring you with the details too much, radial pulse waves are absorbed by the muscle, tendon or ligament resulting in a newfound blood supply to the target area as well as breaking down scar tissue. The results during our first month have been fantastic, particularly for a few of the Bristol Half Marathon runners who had doubts on their fitness leading up to the race. For more details please contact the clinic. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my guest blog and I look forward to Tim returning next month to read more of his unique insights!

Join AFC Mangotsfield AFC Mangotsfield, one of Bristol’s largest senior football teams, is looking for more players. Established in 2011 and nicknamed The Colliers, AFC Mangotsfield was established to bridge the gap between Mangotsfield Juniors and the main senior team, who play in the Southern Premier League. The club run five senior teams of varying ability; the first team are within reach of the Gloucestershire County League. Most home games are played at the Blackhorse playing field, which is set to be revamped in the next couple of years, and is shared with Mango Juniors over the weekends. The senior teams would especially welcome goalkeepers and attacking players and would also like to hear from anyone interested in managing a side. The Juniors, who run teams for children from the age of four, are also looking for more players, in particular Year 1 and Year 2 boys and girls.
